Results of a comparative evaluation of three heat transfer enhancement strategies for forced convection cooling of a parallel plate channel populated with heated blocks, representing electronic components mounted on printed circuit boards, are reported. Heat transfer in the reference geometry, the asymmetrically heated parallel plate channel, is compared with that for the basic grooved channel, and the same geometry enhanced by cylinders and vanes placed above the downstream edge of each heated block. In addition to conventional heat transfer and pressure drop measurements, holographic interferometry combined with high-speed cinematography was used to visualize the unsteady temperature fields in the self-sustained oscillatory flow. The locations of increased heat transfer within one channel periodicity depend on the enhancement technique applied, and were identified by analyzing the unsteady temperature distributions visualized by holographic interferometry. This approach allowed gaining insight into the mechanisms responsible for heat transfer enhancement. Experiments were conducted at moderate flow velocities in the laminar, transitional and turbulent flow regimes. Reynolds numbers were varied in the range Re = 200–6500, corresponding to flow velocities from 0.076 to 2.36 m/s. Flow oscillations were first observed between Re = 1050 and 1320 for the basic grooved channel, and around Re = 350 and 450 for the grooved channels equipped with cylinders and vanes, respectively. At Reynolds numbers above the onset of oscillations and in the transitional flow regime, heat transfer rates in the investigated grooved channels exceeded the performance of the reference geometry, the asymmetrically heated parallel plate channel. Heat transfer in the grooved channels enhanced with cylinders and vanes showed an increase by a factor of 1.2–1.8 and 1.5–3.5, respectively, when compared to data obtained for the basic grooved channel; however, the accompanying pressure drop penalties also increased significantly. Secondary flow patterns, pressure drop and heat transfer in rib-roughened rectangular channels have been investigated. The aspect ratio of the channels is 1–8, and ribs are attached to the wide channel walls in order to set up swirling motions. The geometries tested consist of channels having cross ribs, parallel ribs, cross V-ribs, parallel V-ribs, and multiple V-ribs (Swirl Flow Tube). The flow patterns were investigated using smoke wire visualization and LDV measurements. The smoke wire experiments have been performed at Re=1100 and the LDV measurements at Re=3000 at periodic fully developed conditions. The heat transfer and pressure drop are described by j and f factors for Reynolds numbers from 500 to 15 000. The distributions of axial mean velocity and turbulent fluctuations are strongly influenced by the secondary flows. Large mean velocities and small fluctuations are found in regions where the secondary flow is directed towards a surface, while small mean velocities and large fluctuations are found in regions where the secondary flow is directed away from a surface. The Swirl Flow Tube provides a significant increase in the j factor at Reynolds numbers from 1000 to 2000, but unfortunately also an increase in the f factor. At higher Reynolds numbers, the j and f factors of the Swirl Flow Tube are of the same order of magnitude as for the other rib-roughened channels. It is found that the flow direction in a channel with parallel V-ribs has important influence on the j/f ratio. At Reynolds numbers above 4000, this channel provides the highest j/f ratio if the V-ribs are pointing upstream; while it provides the lowest j/f ratio of all rib configurations, if the V-ribs are pointing downstream.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to compare pressure drop and heat transfer coefficients for a plain, microfin, and twisted-tape insert-tubes. The twisted-tape experiments include three different twist ratios each with two different widths. The data were taken at Reynolds numbers well in the laminar region. The heat transfer data were obtained in a single shell-and-tube heat exchanger where steam is used as a heat source to obtain a uniform wall temperature and the working fluid in the tube is oil. The twist ratio and the width of the tape seem to have a large effect on the performance of the twisted-tape insert. The results demonstrate that as the twist ratio decreases, the twisted-tape will give better heat transfer enhancement. The loose-fit (W=10.8 mm) is recommended to be used in the design of heat exchanger where low twist ratios (Y=5.4, and Y=3.6) and high pressure drop situations are expected since it is easier to install and remove for cleaning purposes. Other than these situations, the tight-fit tape gives a better performance over the loose-fit tape. For the microfin tube tested in this paper, the data shows a small increase in both heat transfer and pressure drop. This type of microfin tube is not recommended to be used in laminar flow conditions.  相似文献

An experimental study of developing and fully developed turbulent air flow in a square duct with two opposite rib-roughened walls in which the ribs are attached in a staggered fashion was conducted to determine the heat transfer characteristics. The rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio (e/DH) was 0.19, the rib pitch-to-height ratio (p/e) was 5.31. The streamwise temperature distribution was measured, and a law of the wall for the thermal boundary layer at each free-stream turbulence level was obtained. The effects of free-stream turbulence intensity with variations of 4–11% on heat transfer coefficients were also examined. Finally, the relationship between Nusselt number and Reynolds number was correlated. The results might be used in the design of turbine blade cooling channels.  相似文献

In the present work, an experimental investigation of convective heat transfer and pressure drop was carried out for the turning portion of a U-channel where the outer wall was equipped with ribs. The shape of the ribs was varied. The investigation aims to give guidelines for improving the thermo-hydraulic performance of a solar air heater at the turning portion of a U-channel. Both the U-channel and the ribs were made in acrylic material to allow optical access for measuring the surface temperature by using a high-resolution technique based on narrow band thermochromic liquid crystals (TLC R35C5 W) and a CCD camera placed to face the turning portion of the U-channel. The uncertainties were estimated to 5 and 7 % for the Nusselt number and friction factor, respectively. The pressure drop was approximately the same for all the considered shapes of the ribs while the dimpled rib case gave the highest heat transfer coefficient while the grooved rib presented the highest performance index.  相似文献

Theoretical investigations were performed on the developed laminar flow and convective heat transfer characteristics for incompressible gases flow through rectanglar micropassages with constant wall heat flux. Mathematical models were proposed for considering the change in viscosity and thermal conductivity of gas in the wall-adjacent region from the kinetic theory. The dimensionless velocity distribution and corresponding pressure drop, the dimensionless temperature distribution and corresponding heat transfer characteristics were both simulated numerically, and the results were compared to other report simulations [10–12] with brief discussions.  相似文献

In this paper, the heat/mass transfer analogy was used to investigate the heat transfer and pressure drop in a square channel with triangular ribs on its two opposite walls. Reynolds number varied from 1 × 104 to 7 × 104; the dimensionless heights of the triangular ribs H/W were 0.04, 0.07, and 0.1; and their dimensionless pitches S/W were 0.45, 0.63, 1.0, 1.37, 1.55, and 2.1. Experimental results showed that the heat transfer coefficients of the wall with triangular rib were about 1 to 2.3 times larger than those of a smooth-channel wall, and the pressure drops along this roughened channel were about 1 to 10 times larger than those for a smooth channel. Correlations of heat transfer and pressure drop were obtained, which are useful for practical designs.  相似文献

A measurement technique to determine the surface heat transfer distribution in complex turbulent flows is described. For this purpose, a constant wall heat flux test surface has been designed. To measure the surface temperature of the test plate, an infrared camera was used. The instrumentation allows the determination of the heat transfer with high accuracy and detailed spatial resolution. In examining combustor-type separated flow, the capabilities of the technique are demonstrated and its accuracy is verified by appropriate conventional techniques.  相似文献

An experimental technique using real-time holographic interferometry combined with digitized image processing has been developed to measure the thermal diffusivity of polymers. This technique uses a cantilever beam or an annular disk with one side subjected to a pulse of radiant energy from a photographic flash. The resulting thermally induced deflection is measured by holographic interferometry. The observed deflection is due to a resultant thermal moment induced by a temperature gradient through the thickness. As time goes on, the heat conducts from the exposed surface through the thickness, resulting in a decrease of the bending moment and transverse deflection. It is shown that the deflection is proportional to the thermal moment, and the thermal diffusivity can be retrieved by moment analysis without deriving the analytical solution to the thermomechanical problem.  相似文献

Algorithm of retrieving the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) from transient temperature measurements is presented. The unknown distributions of two types of boundary conditions: the temperature and heat flux are parameterized using a small number of user defined functions. The solutions of the direct heat conduction problems with known boundary temperature and flux are expressed as a superposition of auxiliary temperature fields multiplied by unknown parameters. Inverse problem is formulated as a least squares fit of calculated and measured temperatures and is cast in a form of a sum of two objective functions. The first results originates from an inverse problem for retrieving the boundary temperature the second comes from the inverse problem for reproducing the boundary heat flux. The final form of the objective function is obtained by enforcing constant in time value of the heat transfer coefficient. This approach leads to substantial regularization of the results, when compared with the standard technique, where HTC is calculated from separately reconstructed temperature and heat flux on the boundary. The validation of the numerical procedure is carried out by reconstructing a known distribution of the HTC using simulated measurements laden by stochastic error. The proposed approach is also used to reconstruct the distribution of the HTC in a physical experiment of heating a cylindrical sample using an impinging jet.  相似文献

Using holographic interferometry and high-speed cinematography the heat transfer at the phase interface of vapor bubbles condensing in a subcooled liquid of the same substance was measured with ethanol, propanol, refrigerant R113 and water. To evaluate the axisymmetric temperature field around the bubble from the interference fringe field, the Abel integral method is not sufficient. A correction procedure considering the light deflection caused by the local temperature gradient has been developed and applied to calculate the heat transfer coefficient. The measurements were performed in the range 2 < Pr < 15 and I < Ja < 120. Measured data could be well-correlated as functions of the Prandtl and Reynolds numbers for the heat transfer coefficient and as functions of the Reynolds, Prandtl and Jacob numbers for the bubble collapse time.  相似文献

The nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficient of ammonia/water mixture was investigated on a cylindrical heated surface at low pressure of 4-8 bar and at low mass fraction of 0 < xNH3 < 0.3 and at different heat flux. The effect of mass fraction, heat flux and pressure on boiling heat transfer coefficient was studied. The results indicate that the heat transfer coefficient in the mixture decreases with increase in ammonia mass fraction, increases with increase in heat flux and pressure in the investigated range. The measured heat transfer coefficient was compared with existing correlations. The experimental data were predicted with an accuracy of ±20% by the correlation of Calus&Rice, correlation of Stephan-Koorner and Inoue-Monde correlation for ammonia/water mixture in the investigated range of low ammonia mass fraction. The empirical constant of the first two correlations is modified by fitting the correlation to the present experimental data. The modified Calus&Rice correlation predicts the present experimental data with an accuracy of ±18% and the modified Stephan-Koorner correlation with an accuracy of ±16%.  相似文献

An experimental study was performed to understand the nucleate boiling heat transfer of water–CuO nanoparticles suspension (nanofluids) at different operating pressures and different nanoparticle mass concentrations. The experimental apparatus is a miniature flat heat pipe (MFHP) with micro-grooved heat transfer surface of its evaporator. The experimental results indicate that the operating pressure has great influence on the nucleate boiling characteristics in the MFHP evaporator. The heat transfer coefficient and the critical heat flux (CHF) of nanofluids increase greatly with decreasing pressure as compared with those of water. The heat transfer coefficient and the CHF of nanofluids can increase about 25% and 50%, respectively, at atmospheric pressure whereas about 100% and 150%, respectively, at the pressure of 7.4 kPa. Nanoparticle mass concentration also has significant influence on the boiling heat transfer and the CHF of nanofluids. The heat transfer coefficient and the CHF increase slowly with the increase of the nanoparticle mass concentration at low concentration conditions. However, when the nanoparticle mass concentration is over 1.0 wt%, the CHF enhancement is close to a constant number and the heat transfer coefficient deteriorates. There exists an optimum mass concentration for nanofluids which corresponds to the maximum heat transfer enhancement and this optimum mass concentration is 1.0 wt% at all test pressures. The experiment confirmed that the boiling heat transfer characteristics of the MFHP evaporator can evidently be strengthened by using water/CuO nanofluids.  相似文献

The local heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of developing turbulent flows of air in three stationary ribbed square ducts have been investigated experimentally. These are: ribbed square duct with constant cross-section (straight duct), ribbed divergent square duct and ribbed convergent square duct. The convergent/divergent duct has an inclination angle of 1°. The measurement was conducted within the range of Reynolds numbers from 10 000 to 77 000. The heat transfer performance of the divergent/convergent ducts is compared with the ribbed straight duct under three constraints: identical mass flow rate, identical pumping power and identical pressure drop. Because of the streamwise flow acceleration or deceleration, the local heat transfer characteristics of the divergent and convergent ducts are quite different from those of the straight duct. In the straight duct, the fluid flow and heat transfer become fully developed after 2–3 ribs, while in the divergent and convergent ducts there is no such trend. The comparison shows that among the three ducts, the divergent duct has the highest heat transfer performance, the convergent duct has the lowest, while the straight duct locates somewhere in between.  相似文献

Convective heat transfer at constant heat flux through unconsolidated porous media has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. Heat transfer measurements have been performed for convective heat transfer over a wide range of operational parameters at constant heat fluxes. In addition to heat transfer coefficients, pressure drop and temperature profiles both in radial and axial direction have been recorded. The equations of motion and energy which account for the non-Darcian effect are used to describe the flow and convective heat transfer through the porous medium. Mathematical models for the prediction of heat transfer coefficients and temperature profiles are presented which predict the experimental data with good accuracy.  相似文献

An experimental investigation was performed to compare the boiling heat transfer coefficients and two-phase pressure drops from a square inline and a staggered tube bundle having the same tube pitch-to-diameter ratio (P/D = 1.30) and from two square inline tube bundles having different pitch-to-diameter ratios (P/D = 1.30 and 1.70). Except at the highest heat fluxes the heat transfer coefficients generally were higher in the staggered tube bundle than in the inline tube bundle and higher in the larger P/D tube bundle than in the smaller. As the heat flux increased, the differences decreased. The differences were attributed to the tradeoff between nucleation and convection. The staggered tube bundle had higher pressure drops than the inline bundle except at low mass velocities; the larger pressure drop in the staggered bundle was attributed to the combination of a larger void fraction and a larger friction multiplier, with the frictional component dominating at higher mass velocities. Comparing the inline tube bundle pressure drops, it was concluded that the larger P/D bundle had a larger void fraction than the smaller P/D tube bundle; no conclusions could be drawn regarding the relative magnitude of the two-phase fraction multiplier.  相似文献

Hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics of flow boiling in a non-uniformly heated microchannel were studied. Experiments were performed with a single microchannel and a series of microheaters to study the microscale boiling of water under axially non-uniform heat input conditions. A simultaneous real time visualization of the flow pattern was performed with the measurement of experimental parameters. Tests were performed over a mass flux of 309.8 kg/m2 s, and heat flux of 200–600 kW/m2. Test results showed different fluctuations of heated wall temperature, pressure drop, and mass flux with variations of the heat input along the flow direction. The unique periodic flow boiling in a single microchannel was observed at all heat flux conditions except for the increasing heat input distribution case which is the nearly uniform effective heat input distribution condition. The instability is correlated with flow pattern transition. For the nearly uniform effective heating condition, no fluctuation of the wall temperature, pressure drop, or mass flux was observed. We can relieve the instability by increasing total heat input along the flow direction and predict the instability using the transition criteria and flow pattern map.  相似文献

The heat transfer and the pressure drop characteristics of laminar flow of viscous oil (195 < Pr < 525) through rectangular and square ducts with internal transverse rib turbulators on two opposite surfaces of the ducts and with wire coil inserts have been studied experimentally. Circular duct has also been used. The transverse ribs in combination with wire coil inserts have been found to perform better than either ribs or wire coil inserts acting alone. The heat transfer and the pressure drop measurements have been taken in separate test sections. Heat transfer tests were carried out in electrically heated stainless steel ducts incorporating uniform wall heat flux boundary conditions. Pressure drop tests were carried out in acrylic ducts. The flow friction and thermal characteristics are governed by duct aspect ratio, coil helix angle and wire diameter of the coil, rib height and rib spacing, Reynolds number and Prandtl number. Correlations developed for friction factor and Nusselt number have predicted the experimental data satisfactorily. The performance of the geometry under investigation has been evaluated. It has been found that on the basis of constant pumping power, up to fifty per cent heat duty increase occurs for the combined ribs and wire coil inserts case compared to the individual ribs and wire coil inserts cases in the measured experimental parameters space. On the constant heat duty basis, the pumping power has been reduced up to forty per cent for the combined enhancement geometry than the individual enhancement geometries.  相似文献

Accurate and reliable dimensionless heat transfer characteristic is very essential for the analysis of heat exchangers. It is also required for the rating and sizing problems of heat exchangers. One of the important experimental methods used to determine the heat transfer coefficient between the heat transfer surface of the heat exchanger and the flowing fluid is transient test techniques. The transient test techniques are usually employed to establish Colburn factor versus Reynolds number characteristics of a high NTU heat exchanger surfaces like compact or matrix heat exchangers. In those situations, a single-blow test, where only one fluid is used, is employed to conduct the transient test. The transient technique may have the fluid inlet temperature having a step change, periodic or an arbitrary rise/drop. In this paper, various transient test techniques that are used for the determination of heat transfer characteristics of high NTU heat exchanger surfaces are discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of an experimental study carried out with R-134a during flow boiling in a horizontal tube of 2.6 mm ID. The experimental tests included (i) heat fluxes in the range from 10 to 100 kW/m2, (ii) the refrigerant mass velocities set to the discrete values in the range of 240-930 kg/(m2 s) and (iii) saturation temperature of 12 and 22 °C. The study analyzed the heat transfer, through the local heat transfer coefficient along of flow, and pressure drop, under the variation of these different parameters. It was possible to observe the significant influence of heat flux in the heat transfer coefficient and mass velocity in the pressure drop, besides the effects of saturation temperature. In the low quality region, it was possible to observe a significant influence of heat flux on the heat transfer coefficient. In the high vapor quality region, for high mass velocities, this influence tended to vanish, and the coefficient decreased. The influence of mass velocity in the heat transfer coefficient was detected in most tests for a threshold value of vapor quality, which was higher as the heat flux increased. For higher heat flux the heat transfer coefficient was nearly independent of mass velocity. The frictional pressure drop increased with the increase in vapor quality and mass velocity. Predictive models for heat transfer coefficient in mini channels were evaluated and the calculated coefficient agreed well with measured data within a range 35% for saturation temperature of 22 °C. These results extend the ranges of heat fluxes and mass velocities beyond values available in literature, and add a substantial contribution to the comprehension of boiling heat transfer phenomena inside mini channels.  相似文献
