Spin-flavor oscillations of neutrinos in rapidly varying external fields are studied. A method for describing neutrino oscillations in arbitrary rapidly varying external fields is developed. An effective Hamiltonian that describes the evolution of the averaged neutrino wave function is obtained. Neutrino oscillations in rapidly varying magnetic fields are considered on the basis of the general formalism developed in this study. Neutrino transitions in a superposition of a constant and a rotating (in space) magnetic field that are transverse with respect to the neutrino velocity are studied. The probabilities of transitions in spin-flavor oscillations of neutrinos in the magnetic fields of the Sun are estimated. Numerical solutions to the Schrödinger equation for the Hamiltonian that describes neutrino interaction with a constant and a rotating (in space) magnetic field are given. It is shown that the approximate analytic formula obtained in the present study for the probability of neutrino transitions is consistent with the respective numerical solution to the evolution equation at high frequencies of the rotating magnetic fields.  相似文献

The quasi-classical equation that describes both neutrino flavor oscillations and spin rotation in dense matter is obtained in the framework of quantum field theory. The solution of this equation for homogeneous medium is found. The probabilities of the spin-flavor transitions in unpolarized moving matter are calculated in the two-flavor model. We show that if the medium is at rest the neutrino helicity is conserved and the flavor transition probabilities are equal to those obtained using the phenomenological approach.  相似文献

The main goal of the paper is to give a short review on neutrino electromagnetic properties. In the introductory part of the paper a summary on what we really know about neutrinos is given: we discuss the basics of neutrino mass and mixing as well as the phenomenology of neutrino oscillations. This is important for the following discussion on neutrino electromagnetic properties that starts with a derivation of the neutrino electromagnetic vertex function in the most general form, that follows from the requirement of Lorentz invariance, for both the Dirac and Majorana cases. Then, the problem of the neutrino form factor definition and calculation within gauge models is considered. In particular, we discuss the neutrino electric charge form factor and charge radius, dipole magnetic and electric and anapole form factors. Available experimental constraints on neutrino electromagnetic properties are also discussed, and the recently obtained experimental limits on neutrino magnetic moments are reviewed. The most important neutrino electromagnetic processes involving a direct neutrino coupling with photons (such as neutrino radiative decay, neutrino Cherenkov radiation, spin light of neutrino and plasmon decay into neutrino-antineutrino pair in media) and neutrino resonant spin-flavor precession in a magnetic field are discussed at the end of the paper.  相似文献

A brief survey of effects generated by the influence of the environment on neutrinos is presented. The issues considered here include flavor and spin oscillations of neutrinos in matter, in electromagnetic fields of various configurations, and in gravitational fields; the electromagnetic properties of the neutrinos and the environment-induced change in these properties; photoneutrino processes generated by the environment; urca processes in magnetic fields; various mechanisms that may be responsible for the asymmetry of neutrino radiation from neutron stars; quantum states of neutrinos in matter and the spin light of neutrinos in matter and external fields; and astrophysical and cosmological applications of the above processes and phenomena. The method that is employed to describe the effect of the environment on neutrinos (as well as on electrons) and which is based on the application of exact solutions to the corresponding modified Dirac equations for particles in matter is briefly discussed.  相似文献

We study the matter effects for solar neutrino oscillations in a general scheme, without any constraint on the number of sterile neutrinos and the mixing matrix elements, only assuming a realistic hierarchy of neutrino squared-mass differences in which the smallest squared-mass difference is effective in solar neutrino oscillations. The validity of the analytic results is illustrated with a numerical solution of the evolution equation in the simplest case of four-neutrino mixing with the realistic matter density profile inside the Sun.  相似文献

We analytically derive the transition probabilities for four-neutrino oscillations in matter. The time-evolution operator giving the neutrino oscillations is expressed by a finite sum of terms up to the third power of the Hamiltonian in a matrix form, using the Cayley-Hamilton theorem. The result of the computation for the probabilities in some mass patterns tells us that it is actually difficult to observe the resonance between one of the three active neutrinos and the fourth (sterile) neutrino near the earth, even if the fourth neutrino exists. Neutrino oscillations ν iL ? ν jR in the field of a linearly polarized electromagnetic wave are studied on the basis of a recently proposed effective Hamiltonian that describes the evolution of a spin in an arbitrary electromagnetic field. The condition of resonance amplification of the oscillations is analyzed in detail. A method is developed for qualitatively studying solutions to the equation of neutrino evolution in the resonance region. This method can be used to explore neutrino oscillations in fields of various configurations.  相似文献

A brief review for particle physicists on the cosmological impact of neutrinos and on restrictions on neutrino properties from cosmology is given. The paper includes a discussion of upper bounds on neutrino mass and possible ways to relax them, methods to observe the cosmic-neutrino background, bounds on the cosmological lepton asymmetry which are strongly improved by neutrino oscillations, cosmological effects of breaking of the spin-statistics theorem for neutrinos, bounds on mixing parameters of active and possible sterile neutrinos with account of active-neutrino oscillations, bounds on right-handed currents and neutrino magnetic moments, and some more. The nonlinear propagation of an intense neutrino flux in an electron-positron plasma with equilibrium density and magnetic field inhomogeneities is considered. It is found that the neutrinos are nonlinearly coupled with electrostatic and electromagnetic disturbances due to weak Fermi interaction and ponderomotive forces. The process is governed by a Klein-Gordon equation for the neutrino flux and a wave equation for the plasma oscillations in the presence of the ponderomotive force of the neutrinos. This pair of equations is then used to derive a nonlinear dispersion relation which exhibits that nonthermal electrostatic and electromagnetic fluctuations are created on account of the energy density of the neutrinos. The relevance of our investigation to the anomalous absorption of neutrinos in a nonuniform magnetized medium is pointed out.  相似文献

From a phenomenological point of view, we study active-active and active-sterile flavour-changing (and flavour-conserving) oscillations of Dirac-Majorana neutrinos both in vacuum and in matter. The general expressions for the transition probabilities in vacuum are reported. We then investigate some interesting consequences following from particular simple forms of the neutrino mass matrices, and for the envisaged scenarios we discuss in detail neutrino propagation in matter. Special emphasis is given to the problem of occurrence of resonant enhancement of active-active and active-sterile neutrino oscillations in a medium. We have studied the neutrino–electron processes in a matter with an external magnetic field of an arbitrary strength. Invariant squares of S-matrix elements, which have been obtained for such reactions using the technique based on the density matrix of a particle propagating in an external magnetic field, are valid in an arbitrary frame of reference moving along the magnetic field lines. The transition probabilities obtained can easily be generalized to the processes of interaction of a neutrino with other charged leptons and protons. The probabilities of the processes have been integrated over the transverse momenta of charged particles for the rates of neutrino–electron reactions as well as the energy and momentum transferred in them from the medium to neutrinos. The expressions obtained are written in the unified form for all neutrino–electron processes.  相似文献

Measuring the $ \bar \nu _e $ \bar \nu _e component of the cosmic diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) is the next ambitious goal for low-energy neutrino astronomy. The largest flux is expected in the lowest accessible energy bin. However, for E ≲ 15 MeV a possible signal can be mimicked by a solar $ \bar \nu _e $ \bar \nu _e flux that originates from the usual 8B neutrinos by spin-flavor oscillations. We show that such an interpretation is possible within the allowed range of neutrino electromagnetic transition moments and solar turbulent field strengths and distributions. Therefore, an unambiguous detection of the DSNB requires a significant number of events at E ≳ 15 MeV.  相似文献

Neutrino oscillations in matter can exhibit a specific resonance enhancement — parametric resonance, which is different from the MSW resonance. Oscillations of atmospheric and solar neutrinos inside the earth can undergo parametric enhancement when neutrino trajectories cross the core of the earth. In this paper we review the parametric resonance of neutrino oscillations in matter. In particular, physical interpretation of the effect and the prospects of its experimental observation in oscillations of solar and atmospheric neutrinos in the earth are discussed. The interaction of neutrinos with nucleons in the envelope of a remnant of collapsing system with a strong magnetic field during the passage of the main neutrino flux is investigated. General expressions are derived for the reaction rates and for the energy-momentum transferred to the medium through the neutrino scattering by nucleons and in the direct URCA processes. Parameters of the medium in a strong magnetic field are calculated under the condition of quasi-equilibrium with neutrinos. Numerical estimates are given for the neutrino mean free paths and for the density of the force acting on the envelope along the magnetic field. It is shown that, in a strong toroidal magnetic field, the envelope region partially transparent to neutrinos can acquire a large angular acceleration on the passage time scales of the main neutrino flux.  相似文献

We discuss violations of CPT and quantum mechanics due to interactions of neutrinos with space-time quantum foam. Neutrinoless double beta decay and oscillations of neutrinos from astrophysical sources (supernovae, active galactic nuclei) are analysed. It is found that the propagation distance is the crucial quantity entering any bounds on EHNS parameters. Thus, while the bounds from neutrinoless double beta decay are not significant, the data of the supernova 1987a imply a bound being several orders of magnitude more stringent than the ones known from the literature. Even more stringent limits may be obtained from the investigation of neutrino oscillations from active galactic nuclei sources, which have an impressive potential for the search of quantum foam interactions in the neutrino sector. Resonant spin-flavor precession (RSFP) scenario with twisting solar magnetic fields has been confronted with the solar neutrino data from various ongoing experiments. The anticorrelation apparent in the Homestake solar neutrino data has been taken seriously to constrain (Δ m 2 ,φ′) parameter space and the twisting profiles of the magnetic field in the convective zone of the Sun. The twisting profiles, thus derived, have been used to calculate the variation of the neutrino detection rates with the solar magnetic activity for the Homestake, Super-Kamiokande and the gallium experiments. It is found that the presence of twisting reduces the degree of anticorrelation in all the solar neutrino experiments. However, the anticorrelation in the Homestake experiment is expected to be more pronounced in this scenario. Moreover, the anticorrelation of the solar neutrino flux emerging from the southern solar hemisphere is expected to be stronger than that for the neutrinos emerging from the northern solar hemispheres.  相似文献

Solar neutrino experiments were originally conceived as a way to demonstrate that nuclear reactions are responsible for energy generation in stars. When solar neutrinos were first detected the measured flux was much less than what solar models predicted. The Solar Neutrino Problem thus came to be and it persisted for over thirty years. It is now known that the deficit in solar neutrinos (of electron neutrino flavour) was due to neutrino oscillations and that matter effects are important. Solar neutrino experiments played a key part in these discoveries and in recent developments in neutrino physics. This report summarizes Pontecorvo Neutrino Physics School lectures that explored the physics of solar neutrinos and the experiments that detected them. The lectures also included a look forward to future solar neutrino experiments and their physics goals and these are also discussed here.  相似文献
