In this paper, we study biharmonic hypersurfaces in Einstein manifolds. Then, we determine all the biharmonic hypersurfaces in irreducible symmetric spaces of compact type which are regular orbits of commutative Hermann actions of cohomogeneity one.  相似文献

An isometric action of a compact Lie group on a Riemannian manifold is called hyperpolar if there exists a closed, connected submanifold that is flat in the induced metric and meets all orbits orthogonally. In this article, a classification of hyperpolar actions on the irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces of compact type is given. Since on these symmetric spaces actions of cohomogeneity one are hyperpolar, i.e. normal geodesics are closed, we obtain a classification of the homogeneous hypersurfaces in these spaces by computing the cohomogeneity for all hyperpolar actions. This result implies a classification of the cohomogeneity one actions on compact strongly isotropy irreducible homogeneous spaces.

An orthogonal representation of a compact Lie group is called polar if thereexists a linear subspace which meets all orbits orthogonally.It has been shown by Conlon that one can associate a Coxeter groupto such a representation.From this, an upper bound for the cohomogeneity of an irreduciblepolar representation can be derived.Another property of irreducible polar representations isthat the action restricted to the unit spherehas maximal orbits in the sense that any action having largerorbits is transitive.We give a classification of orbit maximal actions on spheresand use it to show that irreducible polar representations arecharacterized by these two properties.  相似文献

In the present paper orbits of isotropy subgroups in Riemannian symmetric spaces are discussed. Principal orbits of an isotropy subgroup are isoparametric in the sense of Palais and Terng (seeCritical Point Theory and Submanifold Geometry, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1988). We show that excepting some special cases, the shape operator with respect to the radial unit vector field determines a totally geodesic foliation on a given principal orbit. Furthermore, we prove that the shape operators and the curvature endomorphisms with respect to the normal vectors commute on these isoparametric submanifolds.  相似文献

Based on the works of Gordon (1977) and Zhang and Zhou (2001) on the variational minimizing properties for Keplerian orbits and Lagrangian solutions of Newtonian 2-body and 3-body problems, we use the constrained variational principle of Ambrosetti and Coti Zelati (1990) to compute the Lagrangian actions on Keplerian and Lagrangian elliptical solutions with fixed energies. We also find an interesting relation between the period and the energy for Lagrangian elliptical solutions with Newtonian potentials.  相似文献

In this paper,utilizing equivariant Mose theory for isolated critical orbits developed in [16] we study the versions of Morse identities under group actions,i.e.the global property of equivariant Morse theory. Combining the concept of critical multiplicity we give a lower bound of the critical multiplicities for a class of invariant functionals.As applications we study the bifuractions of a class of equivariant potential operators and generalize some results due to Benci and Pacella, Chang Rabinowitz, etc.This research was supported in part by the National Postdoctoral Science Fund.  相似文献

We present formulas for operators which add a row or a column to the partition indexing the power, monomial, forgotten, Schur, homogeneous and elementary symmetric functions. As an application of these operators we show that the operator that adds a column to the Schur unctions can be used to calculate a formula for the number of pairs of standard tableaux the same shape and height less than or equal to a fixed k.  相似文献

We give a sufficient condition for isometric actions to have the congruency of orbits, that is, all orbits are isometrically congruent to each other. As applications, we give simple and unified proofs for some known congruence results, and also provide new examples of isometric actions on symmetric spaces of noncompact type which have the congruency of orbits.  相似文献

In the present paper we discuss in detail the cohomogeneity one isometric actions of the Lie groups SU(3) × SU(3) and SU(3) on the exceptional compact symmetric spaces G2 and G2/SO(4), respectively. We show that the principal orbits coincide with the tubular hypersurfaces around the totally geodesic singular orbits, and the symmetric spaces G2 and G2/SO(4) can be thought of as compact tubes around SU(3) and P2, respectively. Moreover, we determine the radii of these tubes and describe the shape operators of the principal orbits. In the first part of this paper the five-dimensional contact SO(3)-manifolds are classified up to equivariant coorientation preserving contactomorphisms. The construction of such manifolds with singular orbits requires the use of generalized Dehn twists. We show as an application that all simply connected 5-manifolds with singular orbits are realized by a Brieskorn manifold with exponents (k,2,2,2). The standard contact structure on such a manifold gives right-handed Dehn twists, and a second contact structure defined in the article gives left-handed twists. In an appendix we also describe the classification of five-dimensional contact SU(2)-manifolds.  相似文献

We consider a specific class of coadjoint orbits of maximal unipotent subgroups in classical groups over a finite field; namely, orbits associated with orthogonal subsets in root systems. We derive a formula for the dimension of these orbits in terms of the Weyl group and construct polarizations for canonical forms on the orbits. In this paper, partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) with discrete state and action space under the average reward criterion are considered from a recent-developed sensitivity point of view. By analyzing the average-reward performance difference formula, we propose a policy iteration algorithm with step sizes to obtain an optimal or local optimal memoryless policy. This algorithm improves the policy along the same direction as the policy iteration does and suitable step sizes guarantee the convergence of the algorithm. Moreover, the algorithm can be used in Markov decision processes (MDPs) with correlated actions. Two numerical examples are provided to illustrate the applicability of the algorithm.  相似文献
