A novel one‐component type II polymeric photoinitiator, poly(vinyl alcohol)–thioxanthone (PVA–TX), is synthesized by a simple acetalization process and characterized. PVA–TX enables photopolymerization of methyl methacrylate and acrylamide in both organic and aqueous media. Photopolymerization proceeds even in the absence of a co‐initiator since PVA–TX possesses both chromophoric and hydrogen donating sites in the structure.

Nowadays, the synthesis of (semi)aromatic polymers from lignin derivatives is of major interest, as aromatic compounds are key intermediates in the manufacture of polymers and lignin is the main source of aromatic biobased substrates. Phenols with a variety of chemical structures can be obtained from lignin deconstruction; among them, vanillin and ferulic acid are the main ones. Depending on the phenol substrates, different chemical modifications and polymerization pathways are developed, leading to (semi)aromatic polymers covering a wide range of thermomechanical properties. This review discusses the synthesis and properties of thermosets (vinyl ester resins, cyanate ester, epoxy, and benzoxazine resins) and thermoplastic polymers (polyesters, polyanhydrides, Schiff base polymers, polyacetals, polyoxalates, polycarbonates, acrylate polymers) prepared from vanillin, ferulic acid, guaiacol, syringaldehyde, or 4‐hydroxybenzoic acid.

This article summarizes recent progress in the post‐functionalization of conjugated polymers by electrochemical methods. These electrochemical polymer reactions typically proceed via electrochemical doping of a conjugated polymer film, followed by chemical transformation. Examples include the quantitative oxidative fluorination of polyfluorenes and oxidative halogenation of polythiophenes, as well as the reductive hydrogenation of polyfluorenones. The degree of functionalization, otherwise known as the reaction ratio, can be controlled by varying the charge passed through the polymer, allowing the optoelectronic properties of the conjugated polymers to be tailored. Wireless bipolar electrodes with an in‐plane potential distribution are also useful with regard to the electrochemical doping and reaction of conjugated polymers and allow the synthesis of films exhibiting composition gradients. Such bipolar electrochemistry can induce multiple reaction sites during electrochemical polymer reactions.

Gold nanoshell‐functionalized polymer multilayer tubes can be used as potent therapeutic agents for remote killing of cancer cells in a controlled manner due to the emerging pressure wave and tube fragments piercing the cell wall. The explosion is based on rapid evaporation of water inside the tubes caused by photothermal effects. The mechanism of explosion is presented in theory and experiment. The explosion of the tubes depends on the absorption coefficient and size of the gold nanoshells in the tubes, whereby the placement of the gold particles inside or outside of the tubes has no obvious effect on the explosive properties.

Using the third‐generation Grubbs catalyst, the living ring‐opening metathesis polymerization of ferrocene/cobalticenium copolymers is conducted with theoretical numbers of 25 monomer units for each block, and their redox and electrochemical properties allow using the Bard–Anson electrochemical method to determine the number of metallocenyl units in each block.

Well‐defined ABC triblock copolymers based on two hydrophilic blocks, A and C, and a hydrophobic block B are synthesized and their self‐assembly behavior is investigated. Interestingly, at the same solvent, concentration, pH, and temperature, different shape micelles are observed, spherical and worm‐like micelles, depending on the preparation method. Specifically, spherical micelles are observed with bulk rehydration while both spherical and worm‐like micelles are observed with film rehydration.

The first and second generations of dendronized polyprolines P3G1 , P3G2, and P4G1 are prepared via the “grafting to” route, and their thermoresponsive properties and helical conformations investigated. High molar masses of polyproline main chains carrying azido groups are achieved first by polycondensation of peptide precursors through activated ester strategy. Oligoethylene glycol dendrons cored with alkyne are then attached onto the main chains through click reaction. These polymers are found to be thermoresponsive. Circular dichroism spectroscopy investigation indicates, in contrast to P3G2 and P4G1 which adopt the expected PPII conformation in aqueous conditions, P3G1 prefers to adopt PPI helical conformation, and this conformation is stable within the measured time period and temperature range.

Novel macrocyclic amine‐linked oligocarbazole hollow microspheres are synthesized via a one‐step oxidative method in aqueous solution. Upon altering the oxidants and acidic media, the average diameters of the obtained hollow microspheres are tunable from 0.23 to 2.0 μm. With attractive amine and carbazole functionalities, exposed surface area, thermostability, and photoluminescent properties, the amine‐linked oligocarbazole hollow microspheres are directly assembled to yield heavy metal sorbents with excellent selectivity and recyclability, shown to efficiently remove lead from contaminated water.

Imitating the natural “energy cascade” architecture, we present a single‐molecular rod‐like nano‐light harvester (NLH) based on a cylindrical polymer brush. Block copolymer side chains carrying (9,9‐diethylfluoren‐2‐yl)methyl methacrylate units as light absorbing antennae (energy donors) are tethered to a linear polymer backbone containing 9‐anthracenemethyl methacrylate units as emitting groups (energy acceptors). These NLHs exhibit very efficient energy absorption and transfer. Moreover, we manipulate the energy transfer by tuning the donor–acceptor distance.

Two‐dimensional (2D) palladium nanocube array is achieved on plasma‐etched block copolymer templates, while the well‐aligned nanocubes remain active. Anisotropic nanocubes are site‐selectively assembled on various nanopatterns by capillary force. The nanocube array is proved to be easily tunable, and the dimensional commensurability plays a key role in the configurations of the nanocube assemblies. Not only catalytic nanocube array under confinement but also template for the growth of nanoscale zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods is exemplified as the potential application of the nanoarray.

Rapid, large‐scale exfoliation of graphene in water has expanded its potential for use outside niche applications. This work focuses on utilizing aqueous graphene dispersions to form thin films using layer‐by‐layer processing, which is an effective method to produce large‐area coatings from water‐based solutions of polyelectrolytes. When layered with polyethyleneimine, graphene flakes stabilized with cholate are shown to be capable of producing films thinner than 100 nm. High surface coverage of graphene flakes results in electrical conductivity up to 5500 S m−1. With the relative ease of processing, the safe, cost effective nature of the ingredients, and the scalability of the deposition method, this system should be industrially attractive for producing thin conductive films for a variety of electronic and antistatic applications.

Optically active helical substituted (co)polyacetylenes containing pendent pyrene groups are prepared and then noncovalently immobilized on graphene via ππ interactions. The resulting graphene composite is characterized by XRD, FTIR, Raman, circular dichroism, UV‐vis absorption, TEM, TGA, and fluorescent spectroscopy techniques. The helical polyacetylene endows graphene with the desired optical activity. Also interestingly, the dispersibility of the functionalized graphene in tetrahydrofuran is remarkably improved due to the presence of the helical polymer chains. The present methodology opens new opportunities and serves as a versatile platform toward preparing novel graphene‐based materials.

Hierarchical self‐assembly of transient composite hydrogels is demonstrated through a two‐step, orthogonal strategy using nanoparticle tectons interconnected through metal–ligand coordination complexes. The resulting materials are highly tunable with moduli and viscosities spanning many orders of magnitude, and show promising self‐healing properties, while maintaining complete optical transparency.

Dynamic covalent hydrogels are facilely prepared from biocompatible polysaccharides in physiological conditions by the formation of phenylboronate ester cross‐links. This is based on the simple mixing of carboxylate‐containing polysaccharides (i.e., hyaluronic acid or carboxymethylcellulose) modified with phenylboronic acid and maltose moieties according to mild coupling reactions performed in aqueous solution. The formation of dynamic networks based on reversible boronic‐ester cross‐links is demonstrated by analyzing their rheological behavior. This study shows that these gels can adapt their structure in response to chemical stimuli such as variations in pH or addition of glucose and self‐heal.

The present review focuses on the recent progress made in thin film orientation of semi‐conducting polymers with particular emphasis on methods using epitaxy and shear forces. The main results reported in this review deal with regioregular poly(3‐alkylthiophene)s and poly(dialkylfluorenes). Correlations existing between processing conditions, macromolecular parameters and the resulting structures formed in thin films are underlined. It is shown that epitaxial orientation of semi‐conducting polymers can generate a large palette of semi‐crystalline and nanostructured morphologies by a subtle choice of the orienting substrates and growth conditions.

Five different poly(arylene‐diarylvinylene)s have been synthesized by reductive polyolefination starting from the corresponding bis(α,α‐dichlorobenzyl)‐substituted monomers and dicobaltoctacarbonyl as reducing agent. The resulting polymers all contain main chain tetraphenylethylene units. Thanks to the aggregation‐induced emission effect, the corresponding polymer films show remarkably high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 32%–73%. The polymer with the highest PLQY is tested as solid state sensing material for the PL‐quenching‐based detection of nitroaromatic analytes (1,3,5‐trinitrobenzene as prototypical analyte).

A simple and versatile method is developed for preparing anisotropic polymer particles by pressing polymer microspheres at elevated temperatures. Polystyrene (PS) microspheres are used to demonstrate this approach. Depending on the mechanical deformation and wetting of the polymers on the substrates, polymer structures with special shapes such as barrel‐like or dumbbell‐like shapes can be prepared. The morphology of polymer structures can be controlled by the experimental parameters such as the pressing pressure, the pressing temperature, and the pressing time. The wetting of the polymers on the substrates dominates when the samples are annealing at higher temperatures for longer times.

Disclosed here is the design of a novel supramolecular membrane with self‐mobile adsorption sites for biomolecules purification. In the 3D micropore channels of membrane matrix, the ligands are conjugated onto the cyclic compounds in polyrotaxanes for protein adsorption. During membrane filtration, the adsorption sites can rotate and/or slide along the axial chain, which results in the enhanced adsorption capacity. The excellent performance of supra­molecular membrane is related with the dynamic working manner of adsorption sites, which plays a crucial role on avoiding spatial mismatching and short‐circuit effect. The supra­molecular strategy described here has general suggestions for the “sites” involved technologies such as catalysis, adsorption, and sensors, which is of broad interest.

The preparation of multifunctional polymers and block copolymers by a straightforward one‐pot reaction process that combines enzymatic transacylation with light‐controlled polymerization is described. Functional methacrylate monomers are synthesized by enzymatic transacylation and used in situ for light‐controlled polymerization, leading to multifunctional methacrylate‐based polymers with well‐defined microstructure.
