We describe a novel method for droplet transport combining electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) and the diode-like behavior of valve metals to achieve unique actuation performance. While traditional EWOD droplet transport requires switching of voltage between multiple electrodes, our method, which we term continuous rectified electrowetting, utilizes a simple single electrode and a DC voltage to move a 50 μl droplet 28 mm with velocities up to 32 mm s(-1).  相似文献

The static shape of droplets under electrowetting actuation is well understood. The steady-state shape of the droplet is obtained on the basis of the balance of surface tension and electrowetting forces, and the change in the apparent contact angle is well characterized by the Young-Lippmann equation. However, the transient droplet shape behavior when a voltage is suddenly applied across a droplet has received less attention. Additional dynamic frictional forces are at play during this transient process. We present a model to predict this transient behavior of the droplet shape under electrowetting actuation. The droplet shape is modeled using the volume of fluid method. The electrowetting and dynamic frictional forces are included as an effective dynamic contact angle through a force balance at the contact line. The model is used to predict the transient behavior of water droplets on smooth hydrophobic surfaces under electrowetting actuation. The predictions of the transient behavior of droplet shape and contact radius are in excellent agreement with our experimental measurements. The internal fluid motion is explained, and the droplet motion is shown to initiate from the contact line. An approximate mathematical model is also developed to understand the physics of the droplet motion and to describe the overall droplet motion and the contact line velocities.  相似文献

The electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) technique has considerable potential for microfluidic and biomedical applications. The Lippmann-Young model based on the force balance concept has long been used to predict the contact angles of droplets under electrowetting. However, recent experimental evidence has indicated that this model fails to provide accurate predictions of the lower contact angles associated with saturation conditions at higher electric potentials. Hence, the study simulates the internal flow in an actuated droplet and treats it as stagnation-point flow. This kinetic energy is then taken into consideration while calculating the contact angles using an energy balance model. The energy of an actuated droplet is contributed by the combination of the side surface tension energy, the base tension energy, the dielectric energy, and the kinetic energy when deriving the energy balance model. Consequently, the new energy balance model modifies the Lippmann-Young equation, thereby providing enhanced reasonable predictions of the droplet contact angle across the higher electric potential where the contact angles are close to the saturated condition.  相似文献

Transport of a water droplet on a solid surface can be achieved by differentially modifying the contact angles at either side of the droplet using capacitive charging of the solid-liquid interface (i.e., electrowetting-on-dielectric) to create a driving force. Improved droplet mobility can be achieved by modifying the surface topography to enhance the effects of a hydrophobic surface chemistry and so achieve an almost complete roll-up into a superhydrophobic droplet where the contact angle is greater than 150 degrees . When electrowetting is attempted on such a surface, an electrocapillary pressure arises which causes water penetration into the surface features and an irreversible conversion to a state in which the droplet loses its mobility. Irreversibility occurs because the surface tension of the liquid does not allow the liquid to retract from these fixed surface features on removal of the actuating voltage. In this work, we show that this irreversibility can be overcome by attaching the solid surface features to the liquid surface to create a liquid marble. The solid topographic surface features then become a conformable "skin" on the water droplet both enabling it to become highly mobile and providing a reversible liquid marble-on-solid system for electrowetting. In our system, hydrophobic silica particles and hydrophobic grains of lycopodium are used as the skin. In the region corresponding to the solid-marble contact area, the liquid marble can be viewed as a liquid droplet resting on the attached solid grains (or particles) in a manner similar to a superhydrophobic droplet resting upon posts fixed on a solid substrate. When a marble is placed on a flat solid surface and electrowetting performed it spreads but with the water remaining effectively suspended on the grains as it would if the system were a droplet of water on a surface consisting of solid posts. When the electrowetting voltage is removed, the surface tension of the water droplet causes it to ball up from the surface but carrying with it the conformable skin. A theoretical basis for this electrowetting of a liquid marble is developed using a surface free energy approach.  相似文献

This paper investigates the nonideal electrowetting behavior of thin fluoroploymer films. Results are presented for a three phase system consisting of: (1) an aqueous water droplet containing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), (2) phosphorous-doped silicon topped with SiO2 and an amorphous fluoroploymer (aFP) insulating top layer on which the droplet is situated, and (3) a dodecane oil that surrounds the droplet. The presented measurements indicate that the electrowetting equation is valid down to a 6 nm thick aFP film on a 11 nm thick SiO2. At this dielectric thickness, a remarkable contact angle change of over 100 degrees can be achieved with an applied voltage less than 3 V across the system. The data also shows that for this water/surfactant/oil system, contact angle saturation is independent of the electric field, and is reached when the surface energy of the solid-water interface approaches zero.  相似文献

This paper presents an electrical actuation scheme of dielectric droplet by negative liquid dielectrophoresis. A general model of lumped parameter electromechanics for evaluating the electromechanical force acting on the droplets is established. The model reveals the influence of actuation voltage, device geometry, and dielectric parameter on the actuation force for both conductive and dielectric medium. Using this model, we compare the actuation forces for four liquid combinations in the parallel-plate geometry and predict the low voltage actuation of dielectric droplets by negative dielectrophoresis. Parallel experimental results demonstrate such electric actuation of dielectric droplets, including droplet transport, splitting, merging, and dispending. All these dielectric droplet manipulations are achieved at voltages < 100 Vrms. The frequency dependence of droplet actuation velocity in aqueous solution is discussed and the existence of surfactant molecules is believed to play an important role by realigning with the AC electric field. Finally, we present coplanar manipulation of oil and water droplets and formation of oil-in-water emulsion droplet by applying the same low voltage.  相似文献

A platform capable of seamlessly unifying both optoelectrowetting and optoelectronic tweezers is presented. This enables the user to manipulate aqueous droplets (with electrowetting) as well as individual particles within those droplets (with dielectrophoresis). The device requires no photolithography and droplet/particle manipulation can occur continuously over the entire surface of the device. Droplet and 10 μm polystyrene particle speeds of up to 8 mm s(-1) and 60 μm s(-1), respectively, are demonstrated. Particle concentration within, and subsequent splitting of, a droplet is performed resulting in average concentration efficiencies of 93%. Serial concentration is also demonstrated resulting in exponentially increasing particle concentrations and a 10× concentration increase. Finally, the platform is used to select a single cell out of a cohort and subsequently encapsulate it in its own aqueous droplet.  相似文献

More than one century ago, Lippmann found that capillary forces can be effectively controlled by external electrostatic forces. As a simple example, by applying a voltage between a conducting liquid droplet and the surface it is sitting on we are able to adjust the wetting angle of the drop. Since Lippmann's findings, electrocapillary phenomena – or electrowetting – have developed into a series of tools for manipulating microdroplets on solid surfaces, or small amounts of liquids in capillaries for microfluidic applications. In this article, we briefly review some recent progress of fundamental understanding of electrowetting and address some still unsolved issues. Specifically, we focus on static and dynamic electrowetting. In static electrowetting, we discuss some basic phenomena found in DC and AC electrowetting, and some theories about the origin of contact angle saturation. In dynamic electrowetting, we introduce some studies about this rather recent area. At last, we address some other capillary phenomena governed by electrostatics and we give an outlook that might stimulate further investigations on electrowetting.  相似文献

An electrowetting system with protection against dielectric breakdown is presented. It comprises an electrolyte and a Parylene-C film deposited on an aluminum electrode. The system demonstrates virtually instantaneous self-healing (within 100 ms) after dielectric breakdown under both DC and certain AC electrowetting conditions. DC current response during electrowetting on intentionally damaged Parylene-C is presented. Also presented is a characterization of DC offset voltages and duty cycle percentages required for electrolysis free AC electrowetting between 10 Hz and 4 kHz.  相似文献

Electrowetting (EW) is a powerful tool to control fluid motion at the microscale and has promising applications in the field of microfluidics. The present work analyzes the influence of an electrowetting voltage in determining and altering the state of a static droplet resting on a rough surface. An energy-minimization-based modeling approach is used to analyze the influence of interfacial energies, surface roughness parameters, and electric fields in determining the apparent contact angle of a droplet in the Cassie and Wenzel states under the influence of an EW voltage. The energy-minimization-based approach is also used to analyze the Cassie-Wenzel transition under the influence of an EW voltage and estimate the energy barrier to transition. The results obtained show that EW is a powerful tool to alter the relative stabilities of the Cassie and Wenzel states and enable dynamic control of droplet morphology on rough surfaces. The versatility and generalized nature of the present modeling approach is highlighted by application to the prediction of the contact angle of a droplet on an electrowetted rough surface consisting of a dielectric layer of nonuniform thickness.  相似文献

In this paper, the particle movements in a sessile droplet induced by standing surface acoustic waves (SSAWs) are studied. Tritoroidal particle rings are formed under the interaction of acoustic field and electric field. The experimental results demonstrate that the electric field plays an important role in patterning nanoparticles. The electric field can define the droplet shape due to electrowetting. When the droplet approximates a hemisphere, the acoustic radiation force induced by SSAWs drives the particles to form tritoroidal particle rings. When the droplet approximates a convex plate, the drag force induced by acoustic steaming drives the particle to move. The results will be useful for better understanding the nanoparticle movements in a sessile droplet, which is important to explain the mechanism that SSAWs enhance reaction and crystallization in droplet.  相似文献

This paper reports a droplet-based microfluidic device composed of patterned co-planar electrodes in an all-in-a-single-plate arrangement and coated with dielectric layers for electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) actuation of discrete droplets. The co-planar arrangement is preferred over conventional two-plate electrowetting devices because it provides simpler manufacturing process, reduced viscous drag, and easier liquid-handling procedures. These advantages lead to more versatile and efficient microfluidic devices capable of generating higher droplet speed and can incorporate various other droplet manipulation functions into the system for biological, sensing, and other microfluidic applications. We have designed, fabricated, and tested the devices using an insulating layer with materials having relatively high dielectric constant (SiO(2)) and compared the results with polymer coatings (Cytop) with low dielectric constant. Results show that the device with high dielectric layer generates more reproducible droplet transfer over a longer distance with a 25% reduction in the actuation voltage with respect to the polymer coatings, leading to more energy efficient microfluidic applications. We can generate droplet speeds as high as 26 cm/s using materials with high dielectric constant such as SiO(2).  相似文献

A microfluidic lab-on-a-chip (LoC) platform for in vitro measurement of glucose for clinical diagnostic applications is presented in this paper. The LoC uses a discrete droplet format in contrast to conventional continuous flow microfluidic systems. The droplets act as solution-phase reaction chambers and are manipulated using the electrowetting effect. Glucose is measured using a colorimetric enzyme-kinetic method based on Trinder’s reaction. The color change is detected using an absorbance measurement system consisting of a light emitting diode and a photodiode. The linear range of the assay is 9-100 mg/dl using a sample dilution factor of 2 and 15-300 mg/dl using a sample dilution factor of 3. The results obtained on the electrowetting system compare favorably with conventional measurements done on a spectrophotometer, indicating that there is no change in enzyme activity under electrowetting conditions.  相似文献

This work presents a microfluidic system that can transport, concentrate, and capture particles in a controllable droplet. Dielectrophoresis (DEP), a phenomenon in which a force is exerted on a dielectric particle when it is subjected to a non-uniform electric field, is used to manipulate particles. Liquid dielectrophoresis (LDEP), a phenomenon in which a liquid moves toward regions of high electric field strength under a non-uniform electric field, is used to manipulate the fluid. In this study, a mechanism of droplet creation presented in a previous work that uses DEP and LDEP is improved. A driving electrode with a DEP gap is used to prevent beads from getting stuck at the interface between air and liquid, which is actuated with an AC signal of 200 V(pp) at a frequency of 100 kHz. DEP theory is used to calculate the DEP force in the liquid, and LDEP theory is used to analyze the influence of the DEP gap. The increment of the actuation voltage due to the electrode with a DEP gap is calculated. A set of microwell electrodes is used to capture a bead using DEP force, which is actuated with an AC signal of 20 V(pp) at a frequency of 5 MHz. A simulation is carried out to investigate the dimensions of the DEP gap and microwell electrodes. Experiments are performed to demonstrate the creation of a 100-nL droplet and the capture of individual 10-μm polystyrene latex beads in the droplet.  相似文献

This paper addresses a method to estimate the size of a sessile drop and to measure its evaporation kinetics by making use of both Michelson interferometry and coplanar electrowetting. From a high-frequency electrowetting voltage, the contact angle of the sessile droplet is monitored to permanently obtain a half-liquid sphere, thus complying perfectly with the drop evaporation theory based on a constant contact angle (Bexon, R.; Picknett, R. J. Colloid Interface Sci. 1977, 61, 336-350). Low-frequency modulation of the electrowetting actuation is also applied to cause droplet shape oscillations and capillary resonance. Interferometry allows us to measure a time-dependent capillary spectrum and, in particular, the shift in natural frequencies induced by drop evaporation. Consequently, diffusive kinetics of drop evaporation can be properly estimated, as demonstrated. Because of coplanar electrode configuration, our methodology can be integrated in open and covered microsystems, such as digital lab-on-a-chip devices.  相似文献

We present a review, largely based on recent experimental work of our group, on phase transitions at interfaces of fluid metals, alloys and ionic liquids. After a brief analysis of possible experimental errors and limitations of surface sensitive methods, we first deal with first-order wetting transitions at the liquid/vapour and liquid/wall interface in systems such as Ga-based alloys, K-KCl melts, and fluid Hg. The following chapter refers to surface freezing or surface induced crystallization in different metal alloys. The respective surface phase diagrams are discussed in comparison with their bulk counterpart. In the last part we present very recent investigations of ionic liquid interfaces, including order-disorder transitions at the liquid/vapour interface and examples of two-dimensional phase transitions at the electrified ionic liquid/metal interface. Finally, a simple electrowetting experiment with an ionic liquid droplet under vacuum is described which gives new insight into the contact angle saturation problem. The article ends up with a few perspective remarks on open problems and potential impact of interfacial phenomena on applied research.  相似文献

The requirement for low operational voltage in electrowetting devices, met using thin dielectrics, is usually connected with serious material failure issues. Dielectric breakdown (visible as electrolysis) is frequently evident slightly beyond the onset of the contact angle saturation. Here, plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) is used to deposit thin fluorocarbon films prior to the spin-coating of Teflon® amorphous fluoropolymer. The resulting multilayered hydrophobic top coating improves the electrowetting performance of the stack, by showing high resistance to dielectric breakdown at high applied voltages and for continuous long term application of DC and AC voltage. Leakage current measurements during electrowetting experiments with the proposed composite coating showed that current remains fairly constant at consecutive electrowetting tests in contrast to plain Teflon® coating in which material degradation is evident by a progressive increase in the leakage current after multiple electrowetting tests. Since the proposed composite coating demonstrates increased resistance to material failure and to dielectric breakdown even at thin configurations, its integration in electrowetting devices may impact their reliability, robustness, and lifetime.  相似文献

Explicit analytical models that describe the capillary force on confined droplets actuated in electrowetting on dielectric devices and the reduction in that force by contact angle hysteresis as a function of the three-dimensional shape of the droplet interface are presented. These models are used to develop an analytical model for the transient position and velocity of the droplet. An order of magnitude analysis showed that droplet motion could be modeled using the driving capillary force opposed by contact angle hysteresis, wall shear, and contact line friction. Droplet dynamics were found to be a function of gap height, droplet radius, surface tension, fluid density, the initial and deformed contact angles, contact angle hysteresis, and friction coefficients pertaining to viscous wall friction and contact line friction. The first four parameters describe the device geometry and fluid properties; the remaining parameters were determined experimentally. Images of the droplet during motion were used to determine the evolution of the shape, position, and velocity of the droplet with time. Comparisons between the measured and predicted results show that the proposed model provides good accuracy over a range of practical voltages and droplet aspect ratios.  相似文献

In this study, we analyzed the electrofusion of two cells in a biochip that has been developed to perform the capture by dielectrophoresis and the electrofusion of pairs of cells. The good transparency of the microsystem allowed analyzing the details of the fusion events. By staining one of the cells, the mixing of the two cytosols could be observed during the electrofusion experiment. We show for the first time the rapidity of the mixing of the two cytosols: less than 5 s under our experimental conditions. By comparing these experimental results to a numerical simulation, we found that the rate of this phenomenon is compatible with a diffusion-only mechanism, showing that during the fusion, the two cell membranes in contact are affected by very rapid structural changes and do not limit the exchange of the cytosols between the two cells. A point of interest is the use of dielectric structures to concentrate the electric field and of positive dielectrophoresis to capture cells in the area where the electric field is more intense. This technique allows the increase of the cell-to-cell contact and limits cell cytosol leakages during the fusion process.  相似文献

Here droplet oscillation and continuous pumping are demonstrated by asymmetric electrowetting on an open surface with embedded electrodes powered by a square wave electrical signal without control circuits. The polarity effect of electrowetting on an SU-8 and Teflon coated electrode is investigated, and it is found that the theta-V (contact angle-applied voltage) curve is asymmetric along the V = 0 axis by sessile drop and coplanar electrode experiments. A systematic deviation of measured contact angles from the theoretical ones is observed when the electrode beneath the droplet is negatively biased. In the sessile drop experiment, up to a 10 degrees increment of contact angle is measured on a negatively biased electrode. In addition, a coplanar electrode experiment is designed to examine the contact angles at the same applied potential but opposite polarities on two sides of one droplet at the same time. The design of the coplanar electrodes is then expanded to oscillate and transport droplets on square-wave-powered symmetric (square) and asymmetric (polygon) electrodes to demonstrate manipulation capability on an open surface. The frequency of oscillation and the speed of transportation are determined by the frequency of the applied square wave and the pitch of the electrodes. Droplets with different volumes are tested by square waves of varied frequencies and amplitudes. The 1.0 microl droplet is successfully transported on a device with a loop of 24 electrodes continuously at a speed up to 23.6 mm s(-1) when a 9 Hz square wave is applied.  相似文献
