Comb‐like amphiphilic poly(poly((lactic acid‐co‐glycolic acid)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol)) methacrylate (poly((PLGA‐b‐PEG)MA)) copolymers were synthesized by radical polymerization. (PLGA‐b‐PEG)MA macromonomer was prepared by ring‐opening bulk polymerization of DL ‐lactide and glycolide using purified poly(ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate (PEGMA) as an initiator. (PLGA‐b‐PEG)MA macromonomer was copolymerized with PEGMA and/or acrylic acid (AA) by radical polymerization to produce comb‐like amphiphilic block copolymers. The molecular weight and chemical structure were investigated by GPC and 1H NMR. Poly((PLGA‐b‐PEG)MA) copolymer aqueous solutions showed gel–sol transition behavior with increasing temperature, and gel‐to‐sol transition temperature decreased as the compositions of the hydrophilic PEGMA and AA increased. The gel‐to‐sol transition temperature of the terpolymers of the poly((PLGA‐b‐PEG)MA‐co‐PEGMA‐co‐AA) also decreased when the pH was increased. The effective micelle diameter obtained from dynamic light scattering increased with increasing temperature and with increasing pH. The critical micelle concentration increased as the composition of the hydrophilic monomer component, PEGMA and AA, were increased. The spherical shape of the hyperbranched polymers in aqueous environment was observed by atomic force microscopy. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two types of temperature‐sensitive biodegradable three‐arm and four‐arm star‐shaped poly(DL ‐lactic acid‐co‐glycolic acid‐b‐ethylene glycol) (3‐arm and 4‐arm PLGA–PEG) were successfully synthesized via the coupling reaction of 3‐arm and 4‐arm PLGA and α‐monocarboxyl‐ω‐monomethoxypoly(ethylene glycol) (CMPEG). In dilute aqueous solutions, star PLGA–PEGs showed the temperature‐ and concentration‐dependent formation and aggregation of micelles over specific concentration and specific temperature. With increasing the molecular weight and the relative hydrophobicity of hydrophobic PLGA block, critical micelle temperature (CMT) decreased. Aqueous solution of 4‐arm PLGA–PEG started to form micelles at lower temperature and showed sharper temperature‐dependent growth in micelle size. These results are due to the enhanced hydrophobicity of PLGA block. On the other hand, at high concentration, two types of 3‐arm and 4‐arm PLGA–PEG showed sol–gel–sol transition behavior as the temperature was increased. The 3‐arm and 4‐arm PLGA–PEG showed sol–gel transition at higher polymer concentrations (above 24 wt %) than the PEG–PLGA–PEG triblock copolymer. As the molecular weight and the relative hydrophobicity of PLGA block increased, the critical gel concentration (CGC) decreased. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The BAB‐type triblock copolymers composed of a central poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO, nPEO = 1 000) block and two poly[(D ,L ‐lactic acid)‐co‐(glycolic acid)] end blocks with molecular weights between 900 and 1 600 exhibited an interesting phase transition behavior. The copolymer aqueous solution can form micelles with PLGA loops in the core and a PEO shell and groups of micelles because of bridging between micelles caused by the PLGA blocks with raising temperature. A possible micellar gelation mechanism was suggested.  相似文献

Soft tissues, such as fat and skin, present high flexibility and are capable of withstanding large deformation in various functions. Hydrogels that can resemble the mechanical performance of soft tissue are unique and widely demanded. In this study, micellar hydrogels based on biocompatible poly(l ‐glutamic acid) (PLGA) were designed with the enhanced capacity to bear large deformation. Amphipathic triblock copolymer poly(ethylene glycol) acrylate‐co‐poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐co‐poly (ethylene glycol) acrylate (APEG‐PCL‐APEG) with two terminal double bonds was synthesized and self‐assembled into micelles. At the same time, graft copolymers, poly(l ‐glutamic acid)‐g‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (PLGA‐g‐HEMA) with double bonds were synthesized. APEG‐PCL‐APEG micelles and PLGA‐g‐HEMA were mixed to construct micellar hydrogel via radical polymerization. The crystalline structure and hydrophobic aggregation of copolymers (APEG‐PCL‐APEG) were found to associate with PCL molecular weight. Due to the hydrophobic stress dissipation and crystalline structure of the micelles, the softness and toughness of hydrogels were promoted, exhibiting a 25% increase in ultimate strain. Moreover, the micellar hydrogels were able to load proteins with long‐term retention. In addition, under dynamic mechanical stimulation, the release of proteins could be accelerated. Besides, the micellar hydrogels also supported rabbit adipose‐derived stem cells (rASCs) growth, thus exhibiting the potential toward soft tissue engineering. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Thermoresponsive, biodegradable polymeric hydrogel networks are used widely in medicinal applications. Poly(d ,l ‐lactic acid‐co‐glycolic acid)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(d ,l ‐lactic acid‐co‐glycolic acid) (PLGA‐PEG‐PLGA) triblock copolymers exhibit a sol–gel transition upon heating. The effect of PLGA block and PEG chain molecular weights (MWs) on the gelling temperature of polymer aqueous solution (20% w/w) is described. All polymer solutions convert into a hard gel within 2 °C of the gelling temperature. The release properties of the gels were displayed using paracetamol as a representative drug. A linear relation is described between the gelling temperature and PLGA block MW. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2019 , 57, 35–39  相似文献

Thermoresponsive and pH‐responsive graft copolymers, poly(L ‐glutamate)‐g‐oligo(2‐(2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl methacrylate) and poly(L ‐glutamic acid‐co‐(L ‐glutamate‐g‐oligo(2‐(2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl methacrylate))), were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of N‐carboxyanhydride (NCA) monomers and subsequent atom transfer radical polymerization of 2‐(2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl methacrylate. The thermoresponsiveness of graft copolymers could be tuned by the molecular weight of oligo(2‐(2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl methacrylate) (OMEO3MA), composition of poly(L ‐glutamic acid) (PLGA) backbone and pH of the aqueous solution. The α‐helical contents of graft copolymers could be influenced by OMEO3MA length and pH of the aqueous solution. In addition, the graft copolymers exhibited tunable self‐assembly behavior. The hydrodynamic radius (Rh) and critical micellization concentration values of micelles were relevant to the length of OMEO3MA and the composition of biodegradable PLGA backbone. The Rh could also be adjusted by the temperature and pH values. Lastly, in vitro methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay revealed that the graft copolymers were biocompatible to HeLa cells. Therefore, with good biocompatibility, well‐defined secondary structure, and mono‐, dual‐responsiveness, these graft copolymers are promising stimuli‐responsive materials for biomedical applications. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. When PEG (M.W.~5000 Daltons) is conjugated to poly(l ‐alanine), the polymer aqueous solutions (<10.0 wt.%) undergo sol‐to‐gel (thermal gelation), whereas it is conjugated to poly(l ‐lactic acid), the polymer aqueous solutions (>30.0 wt.%) undergo gel‐to‐sol (gel melting) as the temperature increases. In the search for molecular origins of such a quite different phase behavior, poly(ethylene glycol)‐poly(l ‐alanine) (PEG‐PA; EG113‐A12) and poly(ethylene glycol)‐poly(l ‐lactic acid) (PEG‐PLA; EG113‐LA12) are synthesized and their aqueous solution behavior is investigated. PEG‐PAs with an α‐helical core assemble into micelles with a broad size distribution, and the dehydration of PEG drives the aggregation of the micelles, leading to thermal gelation, whereas increased molecular motion of the PLA core overwhelms the partial dehydration of PEG, thus gel melting of the PEG‐PLA aqueous solutions occurs. The core‐rigidity of micelles must be one of the key factors in determining whether a polymer aqueous solution undergoes sol‐to‐gel or gel‐to‐sol transition, as the temperature increases. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To create a novel vector for specifically delivering anticancer therapy to solid tumors, we used diafiltration to synthesize pH‐sensitive polymeric micelles. The micelles, formed from a tetrablock copolymer [poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(L ‐histidine)‐b‐poly(L ‐lactic acid)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)] consisted of a hydrophobic poly(L ‐histidine) (polyHis) and poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLA) core and a hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) shell, in which we encapsulated the model anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX). The robust micelles exhibited a critical micellar concentration (CMC) of 2.1–3.5 µg/ml and an average size of 65–80 nm pH 7.4. Importantly, they showed a pH‐dependent micellar destabilization, due to the concurrent ionization of the polyHis and the rigidity of the PLA in the micellar core. In particular, the molecular weight of PLA block affected the ionization of the micellar core. Depending on the molecular weight of the PLA block, the micelles triggering released DOX at pH 6.8 (i.e. cancer acidic pH) or pH 6.4 (i.e. endosomal pH), making this system a useful tool for specifically treating solid cancers or delivering cytoplasmic cargo in vivo. The effects of comb‐like amphiphilic block copolymer architectures on the physical properties such as sol‐gel transition and micellization behaviors with the change of temperature and pH were examined. Comb‐like poly((poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐(poly(lactic acid‐co‐glycolic acid))acrylate‐co‐acrylic acid) (poly((PEG‐b‐PLGA)A‐co‐AA)) copolymers were synthesized by coupling of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) with two different kinds of PEG‐b‐PLGA diblock copolymers to investigate the effects of the number of branches and hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity on the sol‐gel transition and micellization. The molecular weights and chemical structures were confirmed by GPC and 1H NMR. The number of PEG‐b‐PLGA branches was gradually deviated from the feed molar ratio with increasing the molecular weight and the number of branches and due to the bulkiness of PEG‐b‐PLGA. Poly[(PEG‐b‐PLGA)A‐co‐AA] aqueous solutions showed thermosensitive sol‐gel transition behavior, and the gelation took place at lower concentration with increasing the number of branches and PLGA chain length due to the increase of hydrophobicity. The temperature, at which abrupt increase of viscosity by dynamic rheometer appeared, was also in good agreement with sol‐gel transition by tube‐titling method. The CMC, calculated from UV‐Visible spectroscopy using DPH as hydrophobic dye, also decreased with increasing the number of PEG‐b‐PLGA branches and PLGA chain length with same reason. The micelle size was increased with increasing temperature at the initial stage, however, decreased with further increase of temperature, since the micelles were, first, aggregated by hydrophobic intermolecular interaction, and then fragmented by dehydration of PEG segments with increasing temperature. PH‐sensitive PAA backbone played a key role in physical properties. With decreasing pH, sol‐to‐gel transition temperature, CMC values, and micelle size were decreased because of the increase of hydrophobicity resulting form non‐ionized acrylic acid. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two types of three‐arm and four‐arm, star‐shaped poly(D,L ‐lactic acid‐alt‐glycolic acid)‐b‐poly(L ‐lactic acid) (D,L ‐PLGA50‐b‐PLLA) were successfully synthesized via the sequential ring‐opening polymerization of D,L ‐3‐methylglycolide (MG) and L ‐lactide (L ‐LA) with a multifunctional initiator, such as trimethylolpropane and pentaerythritol, and stannous octoate (SnOct2) as a catalyst. Star‐shaped, hydroxy‐terminated poly(D,L ‐lactic acid‐alt‐glycolic acid) (D,L ‐PLGA50) obtained from the polymerization of MG was used as a macroinitiator to initiate the block polymerization of L ‐LA with the SnOct2 catalyst in bulk at 130 °C. For the polymerization of L ‐LA with the three‐arm, star‐shaped D,L ‐PLGA50 macroinitiator (number‐average molecular weight = 6800) and the SnOct2 catalyst, the molecular weight of the resulting D,L ‐PLGA50‐b‐PLLA polymer linearly increased from 12,600 to 27,400 with the increasing molar ratio (1:1 to 3:1) of L ‐LA to MG, and the molecular weight distribution was rather narrow (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight = 1.09–1.15). The 1H NMR spectrum of the D,L ‐PLGA50‐b‐PLLA block copolymer showed that the molecular weight and unit composition of the block copolymer were controlled by the molar ratio of L ‐LA to the macroinitiator. The 13C NMR spectrum of the block copolymer clearly showed its diblock structures, that is, D,L ‐PLGA50 as the first block and poly(L ‐lactic acid) as the second block. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. For the preparation of core‐shell nanoparticles containing functional nanomaterials, a photo‐cross‐linkable amphiphilic ABC triblock copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(2‐cinnamoyloxyethyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PEG‐PCEMA‐PMMA), was synthesized. This triblock copolymer was then used to encapsulate Au nanoparticles or pyrene. The triblock copolymer of PEG‐b‐poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate)‐b‐PMMA (PEG‐PHEMA‐PMMA) (Mn = 15,800 g/mol, Mw/Mn = 1.58) was first synthesized by activators generated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization. Its middle block was then functionalized with cinnamoyl chloride. The degrees of polymerization of the PEG, PHEMA, and PMMA blocks were 45, 13, and 98, respectively. PMMA‐tethered Au nanoparticles (with an average diameter of 3.0 nm) or pyrene was successfully encapsulated within the PEG‐PCEMA‐PMMA micelles. The intermediary layers of the micelles were then cross‐linked by UV irradiation. The spherical structures of the PEG‐PCEMA‐PMMA micelles containing Au nanoparticles or pyrene were not changed by the photo‐cross‐linking process and they showed excellent colloidal stability. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Self‐association behaviors of poly(γ‐benzyl L ‐glutamate)‐graft‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PBLG‐graft‐PEG) and its mixtures with PBLG homopolymer in aqueous media were investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. It was revealed that PBLG‐graft‐PEG could self‐assemble to form polymeric micelles with a core‐shell structure in the shape of spindle. The introduction of PBLG homopolymer not only decreases the critical micelle concentration, but also changes the morphology of the micelles.

A novel multifunctional amphiphilic graft copolymer has been synthesized consisting of a biodegradable poly(l ‐aspartic acid) backbone that was decorated by water‐soluble poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and pH‐responsive poly(N,N‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) side‐chains as well as thiol pendant groups. This graft copolymer together with doxorubicin (DOX) formed micelles in water at pH = 10.0 with PDEAEMA and DOX acting as the core and PEG serving as the micellar corona. Upon oxidation, the thiol groups dimerized to form disulfide bonds, thus “locking in” the micellar structure. These crosslinked micelles expanded as the pH was decreased from 7.4 to 5.0 or upon the addition, at pH = 7.4, of glutathione (GSH), a thiol‐containing oligopeptide that is present in cancerous cells and cleaves disulfide bonds. At pH = 5.0, GSH addition triggered the disassembly of the micelles. The expansion and disassembly of the micelles have been determined via in vitro experiments to evaluate their DOX release behavior. More importantly, the graft copolymer micelles could enter cells by means of endocytosis and deliver DOX to the nuclei of ovarian cancer BEL‐7402 cells. Thus, this polymer and its micelles are promising candidates for drug delivery applications. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2017 , 55, 1536–1546  相似文献

Amphiphilic block copolymers composed of a hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) block and a hydrophobic poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) block were synthesized through cationic ring‐opening polymerization with PEG as the precursor. The model reactions indicated that the reactivity of the epoxy groups was higher than that of the double bonds in the bifunctional monomer glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) under the cationic polymerization conditions. Through the control of the reaction time in the synthesis of block copolymer PEG‐b‐PGMA, a linear GMA block was obtained through the ring‐opening polymerization of epoxy groups, whereas the double bond in GMA remained unreacted. The results showed that the molecular weight of the PEG precursor had little influence on the grafting of GMA, and the PGMA blocks almost kept the same length, despite the difference of the PEG blocks. In addition, the PGMA blocks only consisted of several GMA units. The obtained amphiphilic PEG‐b‐PGMA block copolymers could form polymeric core–shell micelles by direct molecular self‐assembly in water. The crosslinking of the PGMA core of the PEG‐b‐PGMA micelles, induced by ultraviolet radiation and heat instead of crosslinking agents, greatly increased the stability of the micelles. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper presents the synthesis and characterization of d ‐fructose modified poly(ethylene glycol) (Fru‐PEG) and fructose modified poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(ethyl hexyl glycidyl ether) (Fru‐PEG‐b‐PEHG) that are both prepared by initiation with isopropyliden protected fructose, followed by deprotection of the sugar. The block copolymers are self‐assembled into micelles, and are subsequently characterized by cryo‐TEM and dynamic light scattering. The fluorescent dye Nile red is encapsulated as a model hydrophobic compound and fluorescent marker to perform initial uptake tests with breast cancer cells. The uptake of sugar and nonsugar decorated micelles is compared.  相似文献

A folic acid targeted mixed micelle system based on co‐assembly of poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(methoxytri(ethylene glycol) methacrylate‐coN‐(2‐methacrylamido)ethyl folatic amide) and poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(diethylene glycol monomethyl ether methacrylate) is developed to encapsulate indocyanine green (ICG) for photothermal therapy and photodynamic therapy. In this study, the use of folic acid is not only for specific cancer cell recognition, but also in virtue of the carboxylic acid on folic acid to regulate the pH‐dependent thermal phase transition of polymeric micelles for controlled drug release. The prepared ICG‐loaded mixed micelles possess several superior properties such as a preferable thermoresponsive behavior, excellent storage stability, and good local hyperthermia and reactive oxygen species generation under near‐infrared (NIR) irradiation. The photototoxicity induced by the ICG‐loaded micelles has efficiently suppressed the growth of HeLa cells (folate receptor positive cells) under NIR irradiation compared to that of HT‐29, which has low folate receptor expression. Hence, this new type of mixed micelles with excellent features could be a promising delivery system for controlled drug release, effective cancer cell targeting, and photoactivated therapy.  相似文献

Core‐shell structured nanoparticles of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)/polypeptide/poly(D ,L ‐lactide) (PLA) copolymers were prepared and their properties were investigated. The copolymers had a poly(L ‐serine) or poly(L ‐phenylalanine) block as a linker between a hydrophilic PEG and a hydrophobic PLA unit. They formed core‐shell structured nanoparticles, where the polypeptide block resided at the interface between a hydrophilic PEG shell and a hydrophobic PLA core. In the synthesis, poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(L ‐serine) (PEG‐PSER) was prepared by ring opening polymerization of N‐carboxyanhydride of O‐(tert‐butyl)‐L ‐serine and subsequent removal of tert‐butyl groups. Poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(L ‐phenylalanine) (PEG‐PPA) was obtained by ring opening polymerization of N‐carboxyanhydride of L ‐phenylalanine. Methoxy‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐amine with a MW of 5000 was used as an initiator for both polymerizations. The polymerization of D ,L ‐lactide by initiation with PEG‐PSER and PEG‐PPA produced a comb‐like copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐[poly(L ‐serine)‐g‐poly(D ,L ‐lactide)] (PEG‐PSER‐PLA) and a linear copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(L ‐phenylalanine)‐b‐poly(D ,L ‐lactide) (PEG‐PPA‐PLA), respectively. The nanoparticles obtained from PEG‐PPA‐PLA showed a negative zeta potential value of ?16.6 mV, while those of PEG‐PSER‐PLA exhibited a positive value of about 19.3 mV. In pH 7.0 phosphate buffer solution at 36 °C, the nanoparticles of PEG/polypeptide/PLA copolymers showed much better stability than those of a linear PEG‐PLA copolymer having a comparable molecular weight. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biodegradable amphiphilic ABC Y‐shaped triblock copolymer (MPBC) containing PEG, PBLA, and PCL segments was synthesized via the combination of enzymatic ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of epsilon‐caprolactone, ROP of BLA‐N‐carboxyanhydride and click chemistry, where PEG, PBLA, and PCL are poly(ethylene glycol), poly(benzyl‐l ‐aspartate), and polycaprolactone, respectively. Propynylamine was employed as ROP initiator for the preparation of alkynyl‐terminated PBLA and methyloxy‐PEG with hydroxyl and azide groups at the chain‐end was used as enzymatic ROP initiator for synthesis of monoazido‐midfunctionalized block copolymer mPEG‐b‐PCL. The subsequent click reaction led to the formation of Y‐shaped asymmetric heteroarm terpolymer MPBC. The polymer structures were characterized by different analyses. The MPBC terpolymer self‐assembled into micelles and physically encapsulated drug doxorubicin (DOX) to form DOX‐loaded micelles, which showed good stability and slow drug release. In vitro cytotoxicity study indicated that the MPBC micelles were nontoxic and the DOX‐loaded micelles displayed obvious anticancer activity similar to free DOX against HeLa cells. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel type of well‐defined graft copolymer, succinylated chitosan‐O‐poly(oligo(ethylene glycol)methacrylate) (SC‐POEGMA), was developed for pH‐reversible poly(ethylene glyocol) (PEG) shielding of cationic nanocarriers. Chitosan‐O‐POEGMA (CS‐POEGMA) was first synthesized via single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization of oligo(ethylene glyol) methacrylate (OEGMA) using O‐brominated chitosan (CS‐Br) as a macromolecular initiator and Cu(I)Br/1,1,4,7,10,10‐hexamethyltriethylenetetramine as a catalyst. The subsequent succinylation of the chitosan backbone gave the titled copolymers. The content of POEGMA in CS‐POEGMA could be widely modulated by varying the degree of bromination and feed ratio of OEGMA to CS‐Br, without compromising the amino density of chitosan backbone. The hierarchical assembly between SC‐POEGMA and trimethylated chitosan‐O‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (TMC‐PCL) micelles was further studied. At pH 7.4, the stoichiometric interactions between SC and TMC segments to form polyampholyte–polyelectrolyte complexes led to the formation of PEG‐shielded micelles. The hierarchially assembled micelles could be disassembled into the pristine TMC‐PCL micelles, when the medium pH was below a certain pH (pHφ). By varying the degree of succinylation of SC‐POEGMA, the pHφ value could be facilely modulated from 6.5 to 3.5 to meet the needs for specific biomedical applications. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work the synthesis of poly(butyl acrylate)‐b‐poly(2‐{[(D ‐glucosamin‐2‐N‐yl)carbonyl]oxy}ethyl methacrylate) (PBA‐b‐PHEMAGl) diblock glycopolymer and poly(2‐{[(D ‐glucosamin‐2‐N‐yl)carbonyl]oxy}ethyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly(butyl acrylate)‐b‐poly(2‐{[(D ‐glucosamin‐2‐N‐yl)carbonyl]oxy}ethyl methacrylate) (PHEMAGl‐b‐PBA‐b‐PHEMAGl) was performed via atom transfer radical polymerization. Monofunctional and difunctional poly(butyl acrylate) macroinitiators were used to synthesize the well‐defined diblock and triblock glycopolymers by chain extension reaction with the glycomonomer HEMAGl. The self‐assembly of these glycopolymers in aqueous solution was studied by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microcopy, showing the coexistence of spherical micelles and polymeric vesicles. In addition, the biomolecular recognition capacity of these micelles and vesicles, containing glucose moieties in their coronas, was investigated using the lectin Concanavalin A, Canavalia Ensiformis, which specifically interacts with glucose groups. The binding capacity of Concanavalin A with glycopolymer is influenced by the copolymer composition, increasing with the length of HEMAGl glycopolymer segment in the block copolymer. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
