Presented are thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) and adsorption probability measurements of iso-butane on the Zn-terminated surface of ZnO. The initial adsorption probability, S0, decreases linearly from 0.57 to 0.22 (±0.02) with impact energy, Ei = 0.74-1.92 eV, and is independent of adsorption temperature, Ts = 91-114 K (±5 K), indicating non-activated molecular adsorption. The coverage, Θ, dependent adsorption probabilities, S(Θ), show a cross-over from adsorbate-assisted adsorption (S increases with Θ) to Kisliuk-like dynamics at about the desorption temperature of iso-butane bi-layers (∼110 K). Thus, the adsorption dynamics are precursor-mediated. The enhanced (gas-surface) mass-match, caused by forming a second layer of the alkane, leads to adsorbate-assisted adsorption. A direct fitting procedure of the TDS data yields a pre-exponential factor of 2.5 × 1013/s and a coverage dependent heat of adsorption of Ed(Θ) = 39 − 6 ∗ Θ + 2.5 ∗ exp(−Θ/0.07) kJ/mol.  相似文献

The adsorption of NH3 molecule on the Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 surface modelled with a cluster has been studied using density functional theory (DFT). The results indicate the existence of a precursor state for the non-dissociative chemisorption. The active site for the molecular chemisorption is the adatom; while the NH3 molecule adsorbs on the Si restatom via this preadsorbed state, the adsorption on the Si adatom is produced practically without an energy barrier. The ammonia adsorption on the adatom induces an electron transfer from the dangling bond of this atom to the dangling bond of the adjacent Si restatom, hindering this site for the adsorption of a second NH3 incoming molecule. However, this second molecule links strongly by means of two H-bonds. The dissociative chemisorption process was studied considering one and two ammonia molecules. For the dissociation of a lonely NH3 molecule an energy barrier of ∼0.3 eV was calculated, yielding NH2 on the adatom and H on the restatom. When two molecules are adsorbed, the NH3-NH3 interaction yields the weakening of a N-H bond of the ammonia molecule adsorbed closer the Si surface. As a consequence, the dissociation barrier practically disappears. Thus, the presence of a second NH3 molecule at the adatom-restatom pair of the Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 surface makes the dissociative reaction self-assisted, the total adsorption process elapsing with a negligible activation barrier (less than 0.01 eV).  相似文献

The adsorption of acetylene on the Si(0 0 1)-c(2 × 4) surface at low and full coverage is studied by first principles density functional calculations using the generalized gradient approximation. For a single acetylene molecule, the most stable configuration corresponds to the di-σ site, on-top of a silicon dimer. This configuration is 0.36 eV more stable than the end-bridge site between two adjacent Si dimers. However, if there are two acetylene molecules, the paired end bridge configuration becomes the most stable. We have also studied the kinetics of the adsorption of a single acetylene molecule. Our calculations show that the reaction is barrier-free for adsorption in the di-σ configuration, while there is an energy barrier of 0.19 eV for adsorption in the end-bridge site. At monolayer coverage, the most stable configuration corresponds to acetylene molecules in the pair-end bridge configuration, in agreement with previous calculations. We have found a noticeable coverage dependence only for the end-bridge site, but not for the di-σ. Our results show that to have an accurate picture of the adsorption of acetylene on the Si(0 0 1) surface, a large unit cell is needed.  相似文献

We attempt to correlate qualitatively the surface structure with the chemical activity for a metal surface, Cr(1 1 0), and one of its surface oxides, Cr2O3(0 0 0 1)/Cr(1 1 0). The kinetics and dynamics of CO2 adsorption have been studied by low energy electron diffraction (LEED), Aug er electron spectroscopy (AES), and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), as well as adsorption probability measurements conducted for impact energies of Ei = 0.1-1.1 eV and adsorption temperatures of Ts = 92-135 K. The Cr(1 1 0) surface is characterized by a square shaped LEED pattern, contamination free Cr AES, and a single dominant TDS peak (binding energy Ed = 33.3 kJ/mol, first order pre-exponential 1 × 1013 s−1). The oxide exhibits a hexagonal shaped LEED pattern, Cr AES with an additional O-line, and two TDS peaks (Ed = 39.5 and 30.5 kJ/mol). The initial adsorption probability, S0, is independent of Ts for both systems and decreases exponentially from 0.69 to 0.22 for Cr(1 1 0) with increasing Ei, with S0 smaller by ∼0.15 for the surface oxide. The coverage dependence of the adsorption probability, S(Θ), at low Ei is approx. independent of coverage (Kisliuk-shape) and increases initially at large Ei with coverage (adsorbate-assisted adsorption). CO2 physisorbs on both systems and the adsorption is non-activated and precursor mediated. Monte Carlo simulations (MCS) have been used to parameterize the beam scattering data. The coverage dependence of Ed has been obtained by means of a Redhead analysis of the TDS curves.  相似文献

Water molecule adsorption properties at the surface of InVO4 have been investigated using an ab initio molecular dynamics approach. It was found that the water molecules were adsorbed dissociatively to the three-fold oxygen coordinated V sites on the (0 0 1) surface. The dissociative adsorption energy was estimated to be 0.8-0.9 eV per molecule. The equilibrium distance between V and O of the hydroxyl -OH was almost the same as the V-O distance of tetrahedra VO4 in the InVO4 bulk crystal (1.7-1.8 Å).  相似文献

We have studied the adsorption of Pb on the Rh(1 0 0) and (1 1 0) surfaces by photoemission and low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and tested the chemical properties by adsorption of CO. Pb forms two distinct c(2 × 2) phases on Rh(1 0 0), according to the temperature of the substrate. The phase formed below about 570-620 K, denoted α-c(2 × 2), reduces the coverage of adsorbed CO but does not affect the valence band spectrum of the molecule. The phase formed above this temperature, denoted β-c(2 × 2), also reduces the coverage of adsorbed CO but the valence band spectrum of the adsorbed CO is strongly affected. The two phases are also characterised by a slightly different binding energy of the Pb 5d5/2 level, 17.54 eV for the α phase and 17.70 for the β phase. The Pb/Rh(1 1 0) surface shows two ordered Pb induced phases, c(2 × 2) and p(3 × 1). CO adsorbs on the first with reduced heat of adsorption and with a valence band spectrum that is strongly altered with respect to CO adsorbed on clean Rh(1 1 0), but does not adsorb on the p(3 × 1) structure at 300 K. We compare the present results with previous results from related systems.  相似文献

Molecular beam scattering measurements have been conducted to examine the adsorption dynamics of CO2 on Cu(1 1 0). The initial adsorption probability, S0, decreases exponentially from 0.43 ± 0.03 to a value close to the detection limit (∼0.03) within the impact energy range of Ei = (0.12-1.30) eV. S0 is independent of the adsorption temperature, Ts, and the impact angle, αi, i.e., the adsorption is non-activated and total energy scaling is obeyed. The coverage, Θ, dependent adsorption probability, S(Θ), agrees with precursor-assisted adsorption dynamics (Kisliuk type) above Ts ∼ 91 K. However, below that temperature adsorbate-assisted adsorption (S increases with Θ) has been observed. That effect is most distinct at large Ei and low Ts. The S(Θ) data have been modeled by Monte Carlo simulations. No indications of CO2 dissociation were obtained from Auger Electron Spectroscopy or the molecular beam scattering data.  相似文献

The regular CO overlayers at coverage θ = 1/3 adsorbed on the (0 0 0 1) surface of hcp Co and (1 1 1) surface of fcc Co are studied by first-principles density-functional theory with the exchange-correlation component in the PBE form. Adsorption in atop, bridge, and three-fold hcp or fcc position are considered. The adsorption energies, CO stretching frequencies, geometry, work function, and local magnetic moments are studied, and, when possible, compared with experimental or theoretical data. Particularly, we show that the recently proposed correction to adsorption energy of CO prefers correctly the atop adsorption site, whereas the remaining sites are almost degenerate in energy. The CO molecule lowers magnetization on neighbouring Co atoms, and the effect decreases with the adsorption site coordination. We show, however, that this trend is not the result of the different C-Co separation at different adsorption sites. A very small magnetic moment appears on CO that couples antiferromagnetically to Co. Most results are very similar for the Co(0 0 0 1) and Co(1 1 1) surfaces.  相似文献

We investigated the growth of Fe nanostructured films on c(2 × 2)-N/Cu(1 0 0) surface with Fe K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) in the near edge and in the extended energy region. The high photon flux of the incident X-rays allowed us to perform multishell analysis of the XAFS oscillations for Fe coverage ΘFe < 1 ML. This data analysis yields a detailed investigation of the atom geometry and some insights in the film morphology. At ΘN < 0.5 ML (N saturation coverage) there is absence of contribution to XAFS from N atoms. First shell analysis of linearly polarized XAFS gives Fe-Fe (or Fe-Cu) bond length values varying between R1 = 2.526 ± 0.006 Å at the highest Fe coverage (3 ML ) and R1 = 2.58 ± 0.01 Å at ΘFe = 0.5 ML, ΘN = 0.3 ML, with incidence angle Θ = 35°. These values are different from the case of bcc Fe (R = 2.48 Å), and compatible with fcc Fe (R1 = 2.52 Å) and fcc Cu (R1 = 2.55 Å). At the Fe lowest coverage (ΘFe = 0.5 ML) the dependence of R1 on the incidence angle indicates expansion of the outmost layer. Near edge spectra and multishell analysis can be well reproduced by fcc geometry with high degree of static disorder. At N saturation pre-coverage (ΘN = 0.5 ML) the XAFS analysis has to keep into account the Fe-N bonding. The results suggest two different adsorption sites: one with Fe in a fcc hollow site, surrounded by other metal atoms as nearest neighbours, and one resulting from an exchange with a Cu atom underneath the N layer.  相似文献

We use first-principles density functional theory-based calculations in the analysis of the interaction of H2O with (1 0 0), (1 1 0) and (1 1 1) surfaces of TiN, and develop understanding in terms of surface energies, polarity of the surface and chemistry of the cation, through comparison with H2O adsorption on ZrN. While water molecule physisorbs preferentially at Ti site of (1 0 0) and (1 1 1) surfaces, it adsorbs dissociatively on (1 1 0) surface of TiN with binding stronger than almost 1.32 eV/molecule. Our analysis reveals the following general trends: (a) surfaces with higher energies typically lead to stronger adsorption, (b) dissociative adsorption of H2O necessarily occurs on a charge neutral high energy surface and (c) lower symmetry of the (1 1 0) plane results in many configurations of comparable stability, as opposed to the higher symmetry (1 0 0) and (1 1 1) surfaces, which also consistently explain the results of H2O adsorption on MgO available in literature. Finally, weaker adsorption of H2O on TiN than on ZrN can be rationalized in terms of greater chemical stability of Ti arising from its ability to be in mixed valence.  相似文献

We present calculations of the desorption rate of water molecules from MgO(0 0 1) at a range of coverages θ and temperatures T. Our aim is to demonstrate that this can be done without making uncontrollable statistical mechanical approximations, and we achieve this by using the potential of mean force method reported previously. As in our earlier work on desorption of isolated molecules, we use a classical interaction model. We find that correlations between adsorbed molecules greatly increase the simulation time needed to obtain good statistical accuracy, compared with the isolated molecule. The activation energy for desorption varies significantly with coverage. The calculations also yield the chemical potential of adsorbed molecules as a function of θ and T, from which we can deduce the critical temperature and coverage for phase separation of adsorbed molecules.  相似文献

We have investigated the adsorption mechanism of SiO molecule incident on a clean Si(1 0 0) p(2 × 2) reconstructed surface using density functional theory based methods. Stable adsorption geometries of SiO on Si surface, as well as their corresponding activation and adsorption energies are identified. We found that the SiO molecule is adsorbed on the Si(1 0 0) surface with almost no activation energy. An adsorption configuration where the SiO binds on the channel separating the dimer rows, forming a Si-O-Si bridge on the surface, is the energetically most favourable geometry found. A substantial red-shift in the calculated vibrational frequencies of the adsorbed SiO molecule in the bridging configurations is observed. Comparison of adsorption energies shows that SiO adsorption on a Si(1 0 0) surface is energetically less favourable than the comparable O2 adsorption. However, the role of SiO in the growth of silicon sub-oxides during reactive magnetron plasma deposition is expected to be significant due to the relatively large amount of SiO molecules incident on the deposition surface and its considerable sticking probability. The stable adsorption geometries found here exhibit structural properties similar to the Si/SiO2 interface and may be used for studying SiOx growth.  相似文献

The interactions of H and H2 with W(1 0 0)-c(2 × 2)Cu and W(1 0 0) have been investigated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations to elucidate the effect of Cu atoms on the reactivity of the alloy. Cu atoms do not alter the attraction towards top-W sites felt by H2 molecules approaching the W(1 0 0) surface but make dissociation more difficult due to the rise of late activation barriers. This is mainly due to the strong decrease in the stability of the atomic adsorbed state on bridge sites, the most favourable ones for H adsorption on W(1 0 0). Still, our results show unambiguously that H2 dissociative adsorption on perfect terraces of the W(1 0 0)-c(2 × 2)Cu surface is a non-activated process which is consistent with the high sticking probability found in molecular beam experiments at low energies.  相似文献

In response to recent helium atom scattering (HAS) results, Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and perturbation theory have been performed for H2 on LiF(0 0 1). MC simulations predict that H2 molecules form a series of structures, p(2 × 2), p(8 × 2), p(4 × 2) with coverages Θ = 0.5, 0.625 and 0.75, respectively, that are stable up to 8 K. This is in partial agreement with the HAS results that report c(2 × 2) and c(8 × 2) structures; they agree in terms of coverage and stability, but disagree in terms of symmetry. To reconcile the results of the simulations and experiments, the orientation of the adsorbed H2 molecules was studied using perturbation theory. These calculations show that the adsorbed H2 molecules are azimuthally delocalized and that the structures are c-type rather then p-type. The calculations also indicate that p-H2 and helicoptering o-H2 prefer cationic sites, while cartwheeling o-H2 prefers anionic sites.  相似文献

Since the development of Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy (STM) technique, considerable attention has been devoted to various molecules adsorbed on various surfaces. Also, a new concept emerged with molecules on surfaces considered as nano machines by themselves. In this context, a thorough knowledge of surfaces and adsorbed molecules at an atomic scale are thus particularly invaluable. The present work describes the first Density Functional Theory (DFT) study of adsorption of CO, CO2 and NO molecules on a BaTiO3 surface following a first preliminary calculation of O and O2 adsorption on the same surface. In the previously considered work, we found that a (0 0 1) surface with BaO termination is more stable than the one with TiO2-termination. Consequently, we extended our study to CO, CO2 and NO molecules adsorbed on a (0 0 1) surface with BaO termination. The present calculation was performed on a (1 × 1) cell with one monolayer of adsorbed molecules. Especially, a series of cases implying CO molecules adsorbed in various geometrical configurations has been examined. The corresponding adsorption energy varies in the range of −0.17 to −0.10 eV. The adsorption energy of a CO2 molecule directly located above an O surface atom (called Os) is of the order of −0.18 eV. The O-C distance length is then 1.24 Å and the O-C-O and O-C-Os angles are 134.0° and 113.0°, respectively. For NO adsorption, the most important induced structural changes are the followings: (i) the N-O bond is broken when a NO molecule is absorbed on a Ba-Os bridge site. In that case, N and O atoms are located above an O and a Ba surface atom, respectively, whereas the O-Ba-Os and N-Os-Ba angles are 106.5° and 63.0°, respectively. The N-O distance is as large as 2.58 Å and the adsorption energy is as much as −2.28 eV. (ii) In the second stable position, the NO molecule has its N atom adsorbed above an Os atom, the N-O axis being tilted toward the Ba atom. The N-Os-Ba angle is then 41.1° while the adsorption energy is only −0.10 eV. At last, the local densities of states around C, O as well as N atoms of the considered adsorbed molecules have also been discussed.  相似文献

The modification of the Au(1 1 1) Shockley-type surface state by an adsorbed monolayer of large π-conjugated molecules was investigated by high-resolution angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). We determined binding energy, band mass, and Rashba-splitting and discuss the results in the context of rare-gas adsorption on noble metals. This comparison allows the determination of the bonding strength of the adsorbates, found to be physisorptive with derived binding energies per molecule of 2.0 eV for perylene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (PTCDA) and 1.5 eV for naphtalene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (NTCDA). We will also present a superstructure model for the NTCDA/Au(1 1 1) system, deduced from low energy electron diffraction images (LEED) in combination with substrate band-backfolding.  相似文献

In this work we have performed total-energy calculations on the geometric structure and adsorption properties of Cu(1 0 0) c(2 × 2)/N surface by using the density-functional theory and the projector-augmented wave method. It is concluded that nitrogen atom was adsorbed on a FFH site with a vertical distance of 0.2 Å towards from surface Cu layer. The bond length of the shortest Cu-N bonding is calculated to be 1.83 Å. Geometry optimization calculations exclude out the possibilities of adsorbate induced reconstruction mode suggested by Driver and Woodruff and the atop structural model. The calculated workfunction for this absorbate-adsorbent system is 4.63 eV which is quite close to that of a clean Cu(1 0 0) surface. The total-energy calculations showed that the average adsorption energy per nitrogen in the case of Cu(1 0 0) c(2 × 2)-N is about 4.88 eV with respect to an isolated N atom. The absorption of nitrogen on Cu(1 0 0) surface yields the hybridization between surface Cu atoms and N, and generates the localized surface states at −1.0 eV relative to Fermi energy EF. The stretch mode of the adsorbed nitrogen at FFH site is about 30.8 meV. The present study provides a strong criterion to account for the local surface geometry in Cu(1 0 0) c(2 × 2)/N surface.  相似文献

We investigated the structural and magnetic properties of Fe(1 1 0) for molecular oxygen adsorption at room temperature. For the c(2 × 2) and c(3 × 1) superstructures, spin-polarized secondary electron emission (SPSEE) induced by protons and electrons reveals a nearly unchanged polarization compared to clean Fe(1 1 0). An appreciable decrease in polarization is found for the disordered layer of oxygen at a coverage Θ ≈ 1. This decrease is more pronounced for the spin polarization determined by electron capture (EC) to excited atomic He levels after grazing scattering. From a comparison of data obtained by proton-induced SPSEE and spin-polarized EC we conclude that the polarization at the vacuum boundary vanishes for an oxygen coverage Θ ≈ 1 while the polarization in the underlying Fe substrate layers is hardly changed.  相似文献

Ab initio density functional theory, using the B3LYP hybrid functional with all-electron basis sets, has been applied to the adsorption of H on the (0 0 0 1) surface of wurtzite GaN. For bulk GaN, good agreement is obtained with photoemission and X-ray emission data for the valence band and for the Ga 3d and N 2s shallow core levels. A band gap of Eg = 4.14 eV is computed vs the experimental value (at 0 K) of 3.50 eV. A simple model, consisting of a (2 × 2) structure with 3/4-monolayer (ML) of adsorbed H, is found to yield a density of states in poor agreement with photoemission data for H adsorbed on surfaces prepared by ion bombardment and annealing. A new model, consisting of co-adsorbed Ga (1/4 ML) and H (1/2 ML), is proposed to account for these data.  相似文献

This study investigates ultra-thin potassium chloride (KCl) films on the Si(1 0 0)-2 × 1 surfaces at near room temperature. The atomic structure and growth mode of this ionic solid film on the covalent bonded semiconductor surface is examined by synchrotron radiation core level photoemission, scanning tunneling microscopy and ab initio calculations. The Si 2p, K 3p and Cl 2p core level spectra together indicate that adsorbed KCl molecules at submonolayer coverage partially dissociate and that KCl overlayers above one monolayer (ML) have similar features in the valance band density of states as those of the bulk KCl crystal. STM results reveal a novel c(4 × 4) structure at 1 ML coverage. Ab initio calculations show that a model that comprises a periodic pyramidal geometry is consistent with experimental results.  相似文献
