The characterization of a class of multivariate MRA and semi-orthogonal parseval frame wavelets

Let A be a d × d expansive matrix with ∣detA∣ = 2. This paper addresses Parseval frame wavelets (PFWs) in the setting of reducing subspaces of L²(R^d). We prove that all semi-orthogonal PFWs (semi-orthogonal MRA PFWs) are precisely the ones with their dimension functions being non-negative integer-valued (0 or 1). We also characterize all MRA PFWs. Some examples are provided.     

Flag enumerations of matroid base polytopes

In this paper, we study flag structures of matroid base polytopes. We describe faces of matroid base polytopes in terms of matroid data, and give conditions for hyperplane splits of matroid base polytopes. Also, we show how the cd-index of a polytope can be expressed when a polytope is split by a hyperplane, and apply these to the cd-index of a matroid base polytope of a rank 2 matroid.     

Squarefree P-modules and the cd-index

In this paper, we introduce a new algebraic concept, which we call squarefree P-modules. This concept is inspired from Karu's proof of the non-negativity of the cd-indices of Gorenstein* posets, and supplies a way to study cd-indices from the viewpoint of commutative algebra. Indeed, by using the theory of squarefree P-modules, we give several new algebraic and combinatorial results on CW-posets. First, we define an analogue of the cd-index for any CW-poset and prove its non-negativity when a CW-poset is Cohen–Macaulay. This result proves that the h-vector of the barycentric subdivision of a Cohen–Macaulay regular CW-complex is unimodal. Second, we prove that the Stanley–Reisner ring of the barycentric subdivision of an odd dimensional Cohen–Macaulay polyhedral complex has the weak Lefschetz property. Third, we obtain sharp upper bounds of the cd-indices of Gorenstein* posets for a fixed rank generating function.     

A geometric realization of quantum groups of type D

We geometrize quantum groups of type D in the spirit of Beilinson et al. (1990) [1].     

The complexity of the weight problem for permutation and matrix groups

Given a metric d on a permutation group G, the corresponding weight problem is to decide whether there exists an element π∈G such that d(π,e)=k, for some given value k. Here we show that this problem is NP-complete for many well-known metrics. An analogous problem in matrix groups, eigenvalue-free problem, and two related problems in permutation groups, the maximum and minimum weight problems, are also investigated in this paper.     

On Taylor and other joint spectra for commuting n-tuples of operators

Let R and S be commuting n-tuples of operators. We will give some spectral relations between RS and SR that extend the case of single operators. We connect the Taylor spectrum, the Fredholm spectrum and some other joint spectra of RS and SR. Applications to Aluthge transforms of commuting n-tuples are also provided.     

A perishable inventory system with service facility and finite source

In this article, we consider a continuous review (s,S)$(s\text{,}S)$ perishable inventory system with a service facility, wherein the demand of a customer is satisfied only after performing some service on the item which is assumed to be of random duration. We also assume that the demands are generated by a finite homogeneous population. The service time, the lead time are assumed to have Phase type distribution. The life time of the item is assumed to have exponential distributions. The joint distribution of the number of customers in the system and the inventory level is obtained in the steady state case. The Laplace–Stieltjes transform of the waiting time of the tagged customer is derived. Various system performance measures are derived and the total expected cost rate is computed under a suitable cost structure. The results are illustrated numerically.     

Improved T − ψ nodal finite element schemes for eddy current problems

The aim of this paper is to propose improved T − ψ finite element schemes for eddy current problems in the three-dimensional bounded domain with a simply-connected conductor. In order to utilize nodal finite elements in space discretization, we decompose the magnetic field into summation of a vector potential and the gradient of a scalar potential in the conductor; while in the nonconducting domain, we only deal with the gradient of the scalar potential. As distinguished from the traditional coupled scheme with both vector and scalar potentials solved in a discretizing equation system, the proposed decoupled scheme is presented to solve them in two separate equation systems, which avoids solving a saddle-point equation system like the traditional coupled scheme and leads to an important saving in computational effort. The simulation results and the data comparison of TEAM Workshop Benchmark Problem 7 between the coupled and decoupled schemes show the validity and efficiency of the decoupled one.     

Factorizing τ-spectra of mappings

In this paper by a spectrum of mappings we mean a morphism of spectra of spaces. However, using the notion of a mapping of mappings, we give the definition of a spectrum of mappings similar to that of a spectrum of spaces. In this case, the formulations of the given results are also similar to the formulations of the corresponding results concerning the spectra of spaces.For the spectra of mappings we define the notion of a τ-spectrum of mappings factorizing in a special sense and prove a version of the Spectral Theorem for such spectra. Furthermore, to a given indexed collection F of mapping we associate a τ-spectrum factorizing in the above special sense whose mappings are Containing Mappings for F constructed in Iliadis (2005) [4]. These associated τ-spectra and the corresponding version of the Spectral Theorem imply that for a given indexed collection F of mappings any so-called “natural” τ-spectrum for F factorizing in the special sense contains a cofinal and τ-closed subspectrum whose mappings are Containing Mapping for F. Thus, Containing Mappigs for F appear here without any concrete construction. The associated τ-spectra are used also in order to define and characterize the so-called second-type saturated classes of mappings (which are “saturated” by universal elements).     

Propagation of P waves from stress-free surface elastic half-space with voids under thermal relaxation and magnetic field

In this paper, an attempt is allocated to investigate the influence of the magnetic field and voids on the reflection of P waves under LS model. The basic governing equations for isotropic and homogeneous generalized thermoelastic half-space with voids under Maxwell’s stress are formulated in the context of the Lord Shulman theory. The boundary conditions at stress-free thermally insulated surface are satisfied to obtain a system of four equations in the reflection coefficients of various reflected waves. It is shown that there exist four plane waves; _P1,_P2,_P3$P_1\text{,}{P}_2\text{,}{P}_3$ and SV waves. In addition, the reflection coefficients from insulated and isothermal stress-free surface for the incidence of P waves are obtained. Finally, numerical values of the complex modulus of the reflection coefficients are visualized graphically to display the effects of the magnetic field, thermal relaxation and voids parameters.     

Kähler structures on complex torus

Consider the complex torus T _C under the natural action of the compact real torus T. In this paper, we study T-invariant Kähler structures ω on T_C. For each ω, we consider the corresponding line bundleL on T _C. Namely, the Chern class ofL is [ω], and L is equipped with a connection ? whose curvature is ω. We construct a canonical T-invariant L ²-structure on the sections ofL,and let H _ω be the square-integrable holomorphic sections ofL.Then the Hilbert space H _ω is a unitary T-representation, and we study the multiplicity of the (l-dimensional) irreducible unitary T-representations in H_ω. We shall see that the multiplicity is controlled by the image of the moment map corresponding to the T-action preserving ω.

Special values of L-functions of elliptic curves over Q and their base change to real quadratic fields

For an elliptic curve E over Q, and a real quadratic extension F of Q, satisfying suitable hypotheses, we study the algebraic part of certain twisted L-values for E/F. The Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture predicts that these L-values are squares of rational numbers. We show that this question is related to the ratio of Petersson inner products of a quaternionic form on a definite quaternion algebra over Q and its base change to F.     

More on the combinatorial invariance of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials

We prove that the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials are combinatorial invariants for intervals up to length 8 in Coxeter groups of type A and up to length 6 in Coxeter groups of type B and D. As a consequence of our methods, we also obtain a complete classification, up to isomorphism, of Bruhat intervals of length 7 in type A and of length 5 in types B and D, which are not lattices.     

On the critical pair theory in abelian groups: Beyond Chowla’s Theorem

We obtain critical pair theorems for subsets S and T of an abelian group such that |S + T| ≤ |S| + |T|. We generalize some results of Chowla, Vosper, Kemperman and a more recent result due to Rødseth and one of the authors.     

Automata all of whose congruences are inner

A congruence on an automaton A is called inner if it is the kernel of a certain endomorphism on A. We propose a characterization of automata, all of whose congruences are inner.     

Laudal-type theorems in P

In this paper we classify all integral, non-degenerate, locally Cohen-Macaulay subvarieties in P^N, whose general complementary section is a complete intersection set of points: they are either complete intersections or curves on a quadric surface in P³ or degree 4 arithmetically Buchsbaum surfaces in P⁴ (i.e. the Veronese surface or a degeneration of it). As a consequence we show that every locally Cohen-Macaulay threefold in P^S of degree 4 is a complete intersection.Moreover, we obtain a generalization of Laudal's Lemma to threefolds in P⁵ and fourfolds in P⁶, which gives a bound on the degree of a codimension 2, integral subvariety X in P^N, depending both on N and a non-lifting level s of X.
