Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed in 30 healthy adults to identify the location, magnitude, and extent of activation in brain regions that are engaged during the performance of Conners' Continuous Performance Test (CPT). Performance on the task during fMRI was highly correlated with performance on the standard Conners' CPT in the behavioral testing laboratory. An extensive neural network was activated during the task that included the frontal, cingulate, parietal, temporal, and occipital cortices; the cerebellum and the basal ganglia. There was also a network of brain regions which were more active during fixation than task. The magnitude of activation in several regions was correlated with reaction time. Among regions that were more active during task, the overall volume of supratentorial activation and cerebellar activation was greater in the left hemisphere. Frontal activation was greater in dorsal than in ventral regions, and dorsal frontal activation was bilateral. Ventral frontal region and parietal lobe activation were greater in the right hemisphere. The volume of clusters of activation in the extrastriate ventral visual pathway was greater in the left hemisphere. This network is consistent with existing models of motor control, visual object processing and attentional control and may serve as a basis for hypothesis-driven fMRI studies in clinical populations with deficits in Conners' CPT performance.  相似文献

By contrast to the adult literature, in which a consistent parietofrontal network for number processing has been identified, the data from studies of number processing in children have been less consistent, probably due to differences in study design and control conditions. Number processing was examined using functional magnetic resonance imaging in 18 right-handed children (8–12 years) from the Cape Coloured community in Cape Town, South Africa, using Proximity Judgment and Exact Addition (EA) tasks. The findings were consistent with the hypothesis that, as in adults, the anterior horizontal intraparietal sulcus (HIPS) plays a major role in the representation and manipulation of quantity in children. The posterior medial frontal cortex, believed to be involved in performance monitoring in more complex arithmetic manipulations in adults, was extensively activated even for relatively simple symbolic number processing in the children. Other areas activated to a greater degree in the children included the left precentral sulcus, which may mediate number knowledge and, for EA, the head of the caudate nucleus, which is part of a fronto-subcortical circuit involved in the behavioral execution of sequences. Two regions that have been linked to number processing in adults — the angular gyrus and posterior superior parietal lobule — were not activated in the children. The data are consistent with the inference that although the functional specialization of the anterior HIPS may increase as symbolic number processing becomes increasingly automatic, this region and other elements of the parietofrontal network identified in adults are already reliably and robustly activated by middle childhood.  相似文献

In 35 healthy volunteers 79 hydrogen spectra were measured from the parietal lobe, parieto-occipital lobe, frontal lobe, temporal lobe, thalamus and insular region. Voxels were selected with a double spin-echo sequence at TE 71, 135 and 270 ms. The spectra were quantitatively evaluated by fitting a Lorentzian model to the resonances of the creatine pool at 3.02 ppm and the choline pool at 3.22 ppm. No differences were found in the intensities of either metabolite in the 6 investigated regions. Creatine and choline were equally distributed in these regions. The interindividual reproducibility of the spectra decreases with longer echo delays. The coefficients of variation of the areas of creatine and choline corrected for the number of acquisitions and the voxel size are ±13% at TE 71 ms, ±23% at TE 135 ms, ±43% at TE 270 ms. This is caused by an interindividual variation in T2 by ±15%, which affects all resonances of a spectrum. Signal variations from the fit, the Q-factor of the RF-coil loaded with different subjects and variations in the flip angle are less than 10% at each echo delay. The intraindividual variation without repositioning of the subject was better than 10%. Using creatine as an internal reference the ratios of the amplitudes of N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) at 2.01 ppm and γ-methylene protons of glutamic acid at 2.34 ppm were not specific for special regions of the brain. Only in the temporal lobe the ratio of NAA and creatine was reduced. A mean concentration ratio of 1.7 for NAA and Cre was measured as an average over all subjects and the investigated brain regions with the exception of the temporal lobe. Initial applications of the method to 7 patients with brain tumors are described.  相似文献

Hydatid cyst of the brain is more common in children than adults. The cyst is always solitary unless the primary site is the brain. Cerebral hydatid cyst (CHCy) is most frequently supratentorial involving the territory of the middle cerebral artery, especially the parietal lobe. This study included 16 patients who were treated for CHCy. They were 11 male patients (68.75%), and 5 female patients (31.25%), ranging in age from 6 to 40 years with an average age of 14.7 years. Most of the patients were children-12 patients (75%), between 6 to 16 years of age. All patients were from rural areas. Headache, vomiting and seizures were the predominant symptoms. Papilloedema was present in 12 patients (75%). CT and MRI were performed in all patients. The cysts were all located in the cerebral hemispheres, except one in the posterior fossa, (Rt. cerebellar hemisphere). One lobe alone was affected in 7 patients (43.8%), two lobes in 6 patients (37.5%) and 3 lobes in two patients (12.5%). Round, or oval well defined cystic lesions isointense to the CSF in T1 and T2WI, with hypointense walls in T2WI and no surrounding perifocal edema or evidence of contrast enhancement were seen in 12 patients (75%) and were classified as simple or non-complicated CHCy. Cystic lesions with surrounding, T2 hyperintense area of perifocal edema, complete and incomplete (segment) rim of contrast enhancement were seen in 4 patients (25%), and were labeled as complicated or infected cysts (cysts with superadded pyogenic infection). All patients were treated surgically, hydatid birth (delivery of unruptured cyst) was achieved in 10 patients, cyst rupture occurred in 6 patients (37.5%), with subsequent recurrence (3 patients with recurrent multiple cysts and 3 patients with recurrent solitary cysts). All the recurrent cysts were surrounded by perifocal edema and showed ring enhancement. MRI has proved to be an excellent means of studying CHCy. It will be more widely used for diagnosis and surgical planning. It provided information about the exact cyst localization, cyst contents and presence or absence of superadded cyst infection.  相似文献

Background

The purpose of this study was to examine task-related changes in prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity during a dual-task in both healthy young and older adults and compare patterns of activation between the age groups. We also sought to determine whether brain activation during a dual-task relates to executive/attentional function and how measured factors associated with both of these functions vary between older and younger adults.

Results

Thirty-five healthy volunteers (20 young and 15 elderly) participated in this study. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was employed to measure PFC activation during a single-task (performing calculations or stepping) and dual-task (performing both single-tasks at once). Cognitive function was assessed in the older patients with the Trail-making test part B (TMT-B). Major outcomes were task performance, brain activation during task (oxygenated haemoglobin: Oxy-Hb) measured by NIRS, and TMT-B score. Mixed ANOVAs were used to compare task factors and age groups in task performance. Mixed ANOVAs also compared task factors, age group and time factors in task-induced changes in measured Oxy-Hb. Among the older participants, correlations between the TMT-B score and Oxy-Hb values measured in each single-task and in the dual-task were examined using a Pearson correlation coefficient. Oxy-Hb values were significantly increased in both the calculation task and the dual-task within patients in both age groups. However, the Oxy-Hb values associated with there were higher in the older group during the post-task period for the dual-task. Also, there were significant negative correlations between both task-performance accuracy and Oxy-Hb values during the dual-task and participant TMT-B scores.

Conclusions

Older adults demonstrated age-specific PFC activation in response to dual-task challenge. There was also a significant negative correlation between PFC activation during dual-task and executive/attentional function. These findings suggest that the high cognitive load induced by dual-task activity generates increased PFC activity in older adults. However, this relationship appeared to be strongest in participants with better baseline attention and executive functions.  相似文献

This study examined the degree to which masker-spectral variability contributes to children's susceptibility to informational masking. Listeners were younger children (5-7 years), older children (8-10 years), and adults (19-34 years). Masked thresholds were measured using a 2IFC, adaptive procedure for a 300-ms, 1000-Hz signal presented simultaneously with (1) broadband noise, (2) a random-frequency ten-tone complex, or (3) a fixed-frequency ten-tone complex. Maskers were presented at an overall level of 60 dB SPL. Thresholds were similar across age for the noise condition. Thresholds for most children were higher than for most adults, however, for both ten-tone conditions. The average difference in threshold between random and fixed ten-tone conditions was comparable across age, suggesting a similar effect of reducing masker-spectral variability in children and adults. Children appear more likely to be susceptible to informational masking than adults, however, both with and in the absence of masker-spectral variability. The addition of a masker fringe (delayed onset of signal relative to masker) provided a release from masking for fixed and random ten-tone conditions in all age groups, suggesting at least part of the masking observed for both ten-tone maskers was informational.  相似文献

In this paper, we review blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies addressing the neural correlates of touch, thermosensation, pain and the mechanisms of their cognitive modulation in healthy human subjects. There is evidence that fMRI signal changes can be elicited in the parietal cortex by stimulation of single mechanoceptive afferent fibers at suprathreshold intensities for conscious perception. Positive linear relationships between the amplitude or the spatial extents of BOLD fMRI signal changes, stimulus intensity and the perceived touch or pain intensity have been described in different brain areas. Some recent fMRI studies addressed the role of cortical areas in somatosensory perception by comparing the time course of cortical activity evoked by different kinds of stimuli with the temporal features of touch, heat or pain perception. Moreover, parametric single-trial functional MRI designs have been adopted in order to disentangle subprocesses within the nociceptive system.

Available evidence suggest that studies that combine fMRI with psychophysical methods may provide a valuable approach for understanding complex perceptual mechanisms and top-down modulation of the somatosensory system by cognitive factors specifically related to selective attention and to anticipation. The brain networks underlying somatosensory perception are complex and highly distributed. A deeper understanding of perceptual-related brain mechanisms therefore requires new approaches suited to investigate the spatial and temporal dynamics of activation in different brain regions and their functional interaction.  相似文献

Event-related fMRI of auditory and visual oddball tasks   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to investigate the spatial distribution of cortical activation in frontal and parietal lobes during auditory and visual oddball tasks in 10 healthy subjects. The purpose of the study was to compare activation within auditory and visual modalities and identify common patterns of activation across these modalities. Each subject was scanned eight times, four times each for the auditory and visual conditions. The tasks consisted of a series of trials presented every 1500 ms of which 4-6% were target trials. Subjects kept a silent count of the number of targets detected during each scan. The data were analyzed by correlating the fMRI signal response of each pixel to a reference hemodynamic response function that modeled expected responses to each target stimulus. The auditory and visual targets produced target-related activation in frontal and parietal cortices with high spatial overlap particularly in the middle frontal gyrus and in the anterior cingulate. Similar convergence zones were detected in parietal cortex. Temporal differences were detected in the onset of the activation in frontal and parietal areas with an earlier onset in parietal areas than in the middle frontal areas. Based on consistent findings with previous event-related oddball tasks, the high degree of spatial overlap in frontal and parietal areas appears to be due to modality independent or amodal processes related to procedural aspects of the tasks that may involve memory updating and non-specific response organization.  相似文献

In previous works, boosting aggregation of classifier outputs from discrete brain areas has been demonstrated to reduce dimensionality and improve the robustness and accuracy of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) classification. However, dimensionality reduction and classification of mixed activation patterns of multiple classes remain challenging. In the present study, the goals were (a) to reduce dimensionality by combining feature reduction at the voxel level and backward elimination of optimally aggregated classifiers at the region level, (b) to compare region selection for spatially aggregated classification using boosting and partial least squares regression methods and (c) to resolve mixed activation patterns using probabilistic prediction of individual tasks. Brain activation maps from interleaved visual, motor, auditory and cognitive tasks were segmented into 144 functional regions. Feature selection reduced the number of feature voxels by more than 50%, leaving 95 regions. The two aggregation approaches further reduced the number of regions to 30, resulting in more than 75% reduction of classification time and misclassification rates of less than 3%. Boosting and partial least squares (PLS) were compared to select the most discriminative and the most task correlated regions, respectively. Successful task prediction in mixed activation patterns was feasible within the first block of task activation in real-time fMRI experiments. This methodology is suitable for sparsifying activation patterns in real-time fMRI and for neurofeedback from distributed networks of brain activation.  相似文献

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is widely used to detect and delineate regions of the brain that change their level of activation in response to specific stimuli and tasks. Simple activation maps depict only the average level of engagement of different regions within distributed systems. FMRI potentially can reveal additional information about the degree to which components of large-scale neural systems are functionally coupled together to achieve specific tasks. In order to better understand how brain regions contribute to functionally connected circuits, it is necessary to record activation maps either as a function of different conditions, at different times or in different subjects. Data obtained under different conditions may then be analyzed by a variety of techniques to infer correlations and couplings between nodes in networks. Several multivariate statistical methods have been adapted and applied to analyze variations within such data. An approach of particular interest that is suited to studies of connectivity within single subjects makes use of acquisitions of runs of MRI images obtained while the brain is in a so-called steady state, either at rest (i.e., without any specific stimulus or task) or in a condition of continuous activation. Interregional correlations between fluctuations of MRI signal potentially reveal functional connectivity. Recent studies have established that interregional correlations between different components of circuits in each of the visual, language, motor and working memory systems can be detected in the resting state. Correlations at baseline are changed during the performance of a continuous task. In this review, various methods available for assessing connectivity are described and evaluated.  相似文献

Background

Focal lesions of the frontal, parietal and temporal lobe may interfere with tactile working memory and attention. To characterise the neural correlates of intact vibrotactile working memory and attention, functional MRI was conducted in 12 healthy young adults. Participants performed a forced-choice vibrotactile frequency discrimination task, comparing a cue stimulus of fixed frequency to their right thumb with a probe stimulus of identical or higher frequency. To investigate working memory, the time interval between the 2 stimuli was pseudo-randomized (either 2 or 8 s). To investigate selective attention, a distractor stimulus was occasionally presented contralaterally, simultaneous to the probe.  相似文献

Comparative functional neuroimaging studies using the block design paradigm have previously demonstrated that there are no significant differences in the location of areas of cerebral activation when native Chinese speakers independently process single words or sentences in both the Chinese (first) and English (second) languages. While it has also been documented that significant domains of brain response include the inferior to middle left frontal lobe, the latency, amplitude and duration of the associated hemodynamic changes during isolated neural processing of Chinese and English languages still remain unknown. The aim of this study, therefore, was to examine the characteristics of the hemodynamic alterations in the above-mentioned regions with event-related functional MRI (ER-fMRI) when native Chinese speakers performed verb generation tasks in both the Chinese (first) and English (second) languages. Our results demonstrate the presence of a similar neural activity-induced hemodynamic response in the inferior to middle left frontal lobe during both tasks. Further, there were also no statistically significant differences among the variables that described the hemodynamic response curves. These findings strongly imply that the underlying neural mechanism for Chinese (first) and English (second) language processing may be similar in native Chinese speakers.  相似文献

Partial volume effects in proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the brain have been studied previously in terms of proper water concentration calculations, but there is a lack of disclosure in terms of voxel placement techniques that would affect the calculations. The purpose of this study is to facilitate a fully automated MRS voxel registration method which is time efficient, accurate, and can be extended to all imaging modalities. A total of thirteen healthy adults underwent single voxel 1H-MRS scans in 3.0 T MRI scanners. Transposition of a MRS voxel onto an anatomical scan is derived along with a full calculation of water concentration with a correction term to account for the partial volume effects. Five metabolites (tNAA, Glx, tCr, mI, and tCho) known to yield high reliability are studied. Pearson’s correlation analyses between tissue volume fractions and metabolite concentrations were statistically significant in parietal (tCr, Glx, and tNAA) lobe and occipital lobe (tNAA). MRS voxel overlaps quantified by dice metric over repeated visits yielded 60% ~ 70% and coefficients of variance in metabolites concentration were 4% ~ 10%. These findings reiterate an importance of considering the partial volume effects when tissue water is used as an internal concentration reference so as to avoid misinterpreting a morphometric difference as a metabolic difference.  相似文献

This functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study examined changes in brain activation after prolonged (20 weeks) and stabilized treatment with the cholinesterase inhibitor galantamine in a small group of patients with very mild Alzheimer's disease (AD). Two cognitive activation paradigms were chosen: one requiring semantic association and the other relying on attention and requiring target detection. A group of age- and education-matched healthy controls was also scanned for comparison. A modest (but not statistically significant) improvement in behavioral scores after treatment was observed in both fMRI tasks. There were brain activation increases in the semantic association task after treatment, and the differences in brain activation present in the comparison of AD patients' baseline images with those of controls were not detectable after treatment. In the target detection task, regions that were activated in the elderly controls but not in the baseline images of the AD group also showed significant activation after treatment. Overall, however, the increases were modest and might reflect the heterogeneity of clinical response to treatment in this small group. Future pharmacological fMRI studies should include clinical response as a factor in the analysis of cholinergic enhancement effects in AD patients.  相似文献

The dorsal stream is a dominant visuomotor pathway that connects the striate and extrastriate cortices to posterior parietal areas. In turn, the posterior parietal areas send projections to the frontal primary motor and premotor areas. This cortical pathway is hypothesized to be involved in the transformation of a visual input into the appropriate motor output. In this study we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the entire brain to determine the patterns of activation that occurred while subjects performed a visually guided motor task. In nine human subjects, fMRI data were acquired on a 4-T whole-body MR system equipped with a head gradient coil and a birdcage RF coil using aT*2-weighted EPI sequence. Functional activation was determined for three different tasks: (1) a visuomotor task consisting of moving a cursor on a screen with a joystick in relation to various targets, (2) a hand movement task consisting of moving the joystick without visual input, and (3) a eye movement task consisting of moving the eyes alone without visual input. Blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast-based activation maps of each subject were generated using period cross-correlation statistics. Subsequently, each subject's brain was normalized to Talairach coordinates, and the individual maps were compared on a pixel by pixel basis. Significantly activated pixels common to at least four out of six subjects were retained to construct the final functional image. The pattern of activation during visually guided movements was consistent with the flow of information from striate and extrastriate visual areas, to the posterior parietal complex, and then to frontal motor areas. The extensive activation of this network and the reproducibility among subjects is consistent with a role for the dorsal stream in transforming visual information into motor behavior. Also extensively activated were the medial and lateral cerebellar structures, implicating the cortico–ponto–cerebellar pathway in visually guided movements. Thalamic activation, particularly of the pulvinar, suggests that this nucleus is an important subcortical target of the dorsal stream.  相似文献

The general aims of functional brain magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies are to ascertain which areas of the brain are activated during a specific task, the extent of this activation, whether different groups of subjects demonstrate different patterns of activation, and how these groups behave in different tasks. Many steps are involved in answering such questions and if each step is not carefully controlled the results may be influenced. This work has three objectives. Firstly, to present a technique for quantitatively evaluating methods used in functional imaging data analysis. While receiver-operator-characteristic (ROC) analysis has been used effectively to evaluate the ability of post-processing algorithms to detect true activations while rejecting false activations, it is difficult to adapt such a technique for comparisons of methods for quantitating activations. We present a technique based on the ANOVA, between two or more regions of interest (ROIs), subject groups, or activation tasks, over a range of statistical thresholds, which reveals the sensitivity of different activation quantification metrics to noise and other variables. Secondly, we use this technique to compare two methods of quantifying localized brain activation. There are numerous ways of quantifying the amount of activation present in a specific region of the brain in an individual subject. We compare the pixel count approach, which simply counts the number of pixels above an arbitrary statistical threshold, with an approach based on the sum of t-values above the same arbitrary t-value threshold. Finally, we examine the sensitivity of the results from an analysis of variance, to user defined parameters such as threshold and region of interest size. Both simulated and real functional magnetic resonance data are used to demonstrate these techniques.  相似文献

Reports using a variety of psychophysical tasks indicate that pitch perception by hearing-impaired listeners may be abnormal, contributing to difficulties in understanding speech and enjoying music. Pitches of complex sounds may be weaker and more indistinct in the presence of cochlear damage, especially when frequency regions are affected that form the strongest basis for pitch perception in normal-hearing listeners. In this study, the strength of the complex pitch generated by iterated rippled noise was assessed in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners. Pitch strength was measured for broadband noises with spectral ripples generated by iteratively delaying a copy of a given noise and adding it back into the original. Octave-band-pass versions of these noises also were evaluated to assess frequency dominance regions for rippled-noise pitch. Hearing-impaired listeners demonstrated consistently weaker pitches in response to the rippled noises relative to pitch strength in normal-hearing listeners. However, in most cases, the frequency regions of pitch dominance, i.e., strongest pitch, were similar to those observed in normal-hearing listeners. Except where there exists a substantial sensitivity loss, contributions from normal pitch dominance regions associated with the strongest pitches may not be directly related to impaired spectral processing. It is suggested that the reduced strength of rippled-noise pitch in listeners with hearing loss results from impaired frequency resolution and possibly an associated deficit in temporal processing.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that time-varying changes in formant pattern contribute to the phonetic specification of vowels. This variation could be especially important in children's vowels, because children have higher fundamental frequencies (f0's) than adults, and formant-frequency estimation is generally less reliable when f0 is high. To investigate the contribution of time-varying changes in formant pattern to the identification of children's vowels, three experiments were carried out with natural and synthesized versions of 12 American English vowels spoken by children (ages 7, 5, and 3 years) as well as adult males and females. Experiment 1 showed that (i) vowels generated with a cascade formant synthesizer (with hand-tracked formants) were less accurately identified than natural versions; and (ii) vowels synthesized with steady-state formant frequencies were harder to identify than those which preserved the natural variation in formant pattern over time. The decline in intelligibility was similar across talker groups, and there was no evidence that formant movement plays a greater role in children's vowels compared to adults. Experiment 2 replicated these findings using a semi-automatic formant-tracking algorithm. Experiment 3 showed that the effects of formant movement were the same for vowels synthesized with noise excitation (as in whispered speech) and pulsed excitation (as in voiced speech), although, on average, the whispered vowels were less accurately identified than their voiced counterparts. Taken together, the results indicate that the cues provided by changes in the formant frequencies over time contribute materially to the intelligibility of vowels produced by children and adults, but these time-varying formant frequency cues do not interact with properties of the voicing source.  相似文献

Activation of cortical and subcortical motor areas of the brain, including primary motor cortex, supplementary motor area, basal ganglia and cerebellum, were successfully investigated in seven right-handed, normal volunteers during a simple, rapid, thumb flexion-extension task using functional magnetic resonance imaging. A multi-slice echo-planar imaging sequence was used to cover the entire brain. A signal increase varying from 2% to 6% was observed for the different regions involved in the motor task. Moving the non-dominant thumb was associated with a more bilateral activation pattern in both putamen and cerebellar regions. This study demonstrates the capability of functional magnetic resonance imaging to delineate simultaneously many activated brain areas that are commonly thought to be involved in the performance of motor tasks.  相似文献
