Global Solar UV Index: Australian measurements, forecasts and comparison with the UK

The 2002 revision of the UV index (UVI) issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the World Meteorological Office (WMO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) (World Health Organization [2002] Global Solar UV Index: A Practical Guide. WHO, Geneva) was motivated by the need to further standardize the use and presentation of the UVI. Awareness of the hazards of solar UV radiation (UVR) is generally high in Australia, but more effective use of the UVI will assist in promoting further changes to the population's sun exposure behavior. UVI levels for a number of cities around Australia as measured by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA), covering the time period 1996-2000, are presented. Also shown are UVI forecasts from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM). Agreement between the BOM data and the measurements varies depending on the location but is within 2 UVI units approximately 75% of the time. UVI levels are supplied to the media, and in summer values in excess of 12-14 are regularly recorded, although the more northerly locations occasionally reach 16 and 17. The factors affecting the solar UVR environment and the measured UVI are also discussed and compared against measurements from the UK.

Quality control in the analysis of lead and cadmium in blood

Summary An extensive quality control programme has been developed within a global UNEP/WHO project on Assessment of Exposure to Lead and Cadmium through Biological Monitoring. This project was coordinated by the Karolinska Institute (Department of Environmental Hygiene) and the National (Swedish) Institute of Environmental Medicine. The project was carried out within the framework of UNEP's Global Environmental Monitoring System (GEMS) and was initiated in 1978 on the basis of recommendations from a UNEP/WHO meeting of a Government Expert Group on Health-Related Monitoring.On termination of the project in 1981 it was decided to extend the analytical QC assurance programme on a periodic basis in order to maintain the analytical capability of the participating laboratories. A QC programme was conducted by our Institute in a follow-up study of the above mentioned UNEP/WHO programme and for a National Swedish Board of Occupational Safety and Health project, as well as for a recently concluded project in which a decrease in bloodlead levels in residents of Stockholm for the period 1980–1984 was established.In the latter project decreased blood-lead levels of about 20% were found in samples stored frozen (–20 ° C) for 4 years. This finding stimulated a study of the long-term stability of our QC samples. Results of lead and cadmium analyses performed for each QC sample during 1980–1985 were computerized. The results showed that the QC samples appeared to be stable for 2–3 years when stored at –20 °C. The losses of cadmium were 5 –10% in 5–6 years of storage at –20 ° C and seem to be less than those of lead (7–15%). Analysis of several QC sets, prepared on different occasions, but analyzed on the same day, confirmed that losses occur.

MXene/枝状Co/聚偏氟乙烯复合光热膜制备及其界面蒸发性能

使用湿法刻蚀方式将Ti₃AlC₂刻蚀剥离成单/少层Ti₃C₂T_xMXene纳米片,采用电化学还原法制备枝状Co,然后以亲水的聚偏氟乙烯(PVDF)膜为基底通过真空抽滤制备Ti₃C₂T_x/枝状Co/PVDF复合光热膜。对复合材料的结构和形貌进行表征,研究了复合光热膜的光吸收性能和界面蒸发性能。结果表明,在模拟1个太阳光照下(光照强度为1kW·m^-2),Ti₃C₂T_x/枝状Co/PVDF复合光热膜的光吸收率达到95.3%,纯水蒸发速率达到1.78kg·m^-2·h^-1,界面蒸发效率高达97.5%。此外,还测试了在模拟海水中的界面蒸发性能,蒸发冷凝得到的水达到世界卫生组织(WHO)和美国环境保护署(EPA)饮用水标准,蒸发速率达到1.61kg·m^-2·h^-1,循环5次后稳定在1.59kg·m^-2·h^-1。

Antarctic Environmental Specimen Bank-First 5 Years of Experience

Abstract

The Project on an Antarctic Environmental Specimen Bank (Banca Campioni Ambientali Antartici—BCAA) began in 1994 in order to collect and classify samples from the Antarctic ecosystem to be used for future studies.

The objectives of the project are similar to the general aims of the Environmental Specimen Banks, but they specifically focus on the chemical aspects concerning the research activities of the Italian Project on the “Micropollutants Chemistry” (Sector “Chemical Contamination” of the Italian Antarctic Research Programme—PNRA).

During these first years the facilities suitable for storing a significant number of specimens (now over 2,000) at different temperatures (from ?30°C to ?150°C) and a database system, specifically designed for managing and consulting information concerning both the storage of samples and data on their chemical characterisation, have been developed.

In addition, a programme for validating the procedures of Antarctic organisms storage by checking the stability of some chemical parameters both in fresh and freeze-dried specimens has been developed.
