Let M Rn be a connected component of an algebraic set –1(0),where is a polynomial of degree d. Assume that M is containedin a ball of radius r. We prove that the geodesic diameter ofM is bounded by 2rv(n)d(4d–5)n–2, where v(n) =(1/2)((n+1)/2)(n/2)–1.This estimate is based on the bound rv(n)d(4d–5)n–2for the length of the gradient trajectories of a linear projectionrestricted to M. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification 32Bxx,34Cxx (primary), 32Sxx, 14P10 (secondary).  相似文献

On the Discreteness and Convergence in n-Dimensional Mobius Groups   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Throughout this paper, we adopt the same notations as in [1,6, 8] such as the Möbius group M(Rn), the Clifford algebraCn–1, the Clifford matrix group SL(2, n), the Cliffordnorm of ||A||=(|a|2+|b|2+|c|2+|d|2) (1) and the Clifford metric of SL(2, n) or of the Möbius groupM(Rn) d(A1,A2)=||A1A2||(|a1a2|2+|b1b2|2+|c1c2|2+|d1d2|2)(2) where |·| is the norm of a Clifford number and represents fi M(), i = 1,2, and so on. In addition, we adopt some notions in [6, 12]:the elementary group, the uniformly bounded torsion, and soon. For example, the definition of the uniformly bounded torsionis as follows.  相似文献

Shapiro's cyclic sum is defined by , If K is the cone in Rn of points withnon-negative coordinates, it is shown that the minimum of Ein K is a fixed point of T2, where T is the non-linear operatordefined by (Tx)i = xni+1/(xni+2 + xni+3)2for i = 1,2,...,n. It is conjectured that Tx = Skx, where Sis the shift operator in Rn, and a proof is given under someadditional hypotheses. One of the consequences is a simple proofthat at the minimum point, ai(x) = ani+1–k(x) fori = 1,2,...,n.  相似文献

The low-dimensional projective irreducible representations incross characteristics of the projective special linear groupPSLn(q) are investigated. If n 3 and (n, q) (3,2), (3,4), (4,2), (4,3), all such representationsof the first degree (which is (qnq)/(q – 1) – with = 0 or 1) and the second degree (which is (qn –1)/(q – 1) come from Weil representations. We show thatthe gap between the second and the third degree is roughly q2n-4.1991 Mathematics Subject Classification: 20C20, 20C33.  相似文献

Hypersurfaces in a Unit Sphere Sn+1(1) with Constant Scalar Curvature   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The paper considers n-dimensional hypersurfaces with constantscalar curvature of a unit sphere Sn–1(1). The hypersurfaceSk(c1)xSnk(c2) in a unit sphere Sn+1(1) is characterized, and it is shown that there exist many compact hypersurfaceswith constant scalar curvature in a unit sphere Sn+1(1) whichare not congruent to each other in it. In particular, it isproved that if M is an n-dimensional (n > 3) complete locallyconformally flat hypersurface with constant scalar curvaturen(n–1)r in a unit sphere Sn+1(1), then r > 1–2/n,and (1) when r (n–2)/(n–1), if then M is isometric to S1xSn–1(c),where S is the squared norm of the second fundamental form ofM; (2) there are no complete hypersurfaces in Sn+1(1) with constantscalar curvature n(n–1)r and with two distinct principalcurvatures, one of which is simple, such that r = (n–2)/(n–1)and   相似文献

Let K be the (real closed) field of Puiseux series in t overR endowed with the natural linear order. Then the elements ofthe formal power series rings [[1,...,n]] converge t-adicallyon [–t,t]n, and hence define functions [–t,t]n K. Let L be the language of ordered fields, enriched with symbolsfor these functions. By Corollary 3.15, K is o-minimal in L.This result is obtained from a quantifier elimination theorem. The proofs use methods from non-Archimedean analysis. 2000 MathematicsSubject Classification 03C64, 32P05, 32B05, 32B20, 03C10 (primary),03C98, 03C60, 14P15 (secondary).  相似文献

This paper is devoted to the long-time behavior of solutionsto the Cauchy problem of the porous medium equation ut = (um)– up in Rn x (0,) with (1 – 2/n)+ < m < 1and the critical exponent p = m + 2/n. For the strictly positiveinitial data u(x,0) = O(1 + |x|)–k with n + mn(2 –n + nm)/(2[2 – m + mn(1 – m)]) k < 2/(1 –m), we prove that the solution of the above Cauchy problem convergesto a fundamental solution of ut = (um) with an additional logarithmicanomalous decay exponent in time as t .  相似文献

A polynomial of degree n in z–1 and n – 1 in z isdefined by an interpolation projection from the space A(N) of functions f analytic in thecircular annulus –1<|z| and continuous on its boundaries|z|=–1, . The points of interpolation are chosen to coincidewith the n roots of zn=–n and the n roots of zn=–n.We prove Mason's conjecture that the corresponding Lebesguefunction attains its maximal value on the inner circle. We alsoestimate the bound of the Lebesgue constant . It is proved that the following estimate for theoperator norm holds: where n, is the Lebesgue constant of Gronwall for equally spacedinterpolation on a circle by a polynomial of degree n.  相似文献

Two-point Pad? approximants are used to calculate tight upperand lower bounds on the quantity <?, f> associated withKirkwood-Riseman integral equations (1+yL)?=f, which arise inthe diffusion theory of flexible macromolecules. The self-adjointoperator L is an integral operator on –1 x 1, with weaklysingular kernel |xx'|–?, and the two specificcases (i) f = 1, (ii) f = x2 are studied. In case (i) directbounds on <?, 1> are obtained; this quantity is inverselyproportional to the translational diffusion constant. In case(ii) bounds on <?, 1 > are found by a new technique involvingcombinations of bounds for the three cases f = 1, f = x2 andf = bx2?b–1. Various types of Pade and related approximantsare compared, using the information <f, Lnf>, n = –2,–1, 0, 1, 2, 3 and (an upper bound on L) for severalvalues of the positive parameter y. Pad?-approximant-generating trial vectors are investigated anda convergence theorem is established. The vector consistingof an optimum linear combination of L–1f, f and Lf isfound to be an accurate approximation to a numerical solutionin case (ii), for all values of y and x. Specific analyticalexpressions are derived for the approximate solutions.  相似文献

Every compact, connected PL manifold Mn, with MnØ, collapsesto a codimension-one subpolyhedron Qn–1, called a spineof Mn. The purpose of this paper is to prove that, if Qn–1is appropriately chosen, one can reconstruct Mn from Qn–1,after taking the Cartesian product with an interval I=[0, 1].  相似文献

Let f, g: (Rn, 0) (Rp, 0) be two C map-germs. Then f and gare C0-equivalent if there exist homeomorphism-germs h and lof (Rn, 0) and (Rp, 0) respectively such that g = l f h–1.Let k be a positive integer. A germ f is k-C0-determined ifevery germ g with jk g(0) = jk f(0) is C0-equivalent to f. Moreover,we say that f is finitely topologically determined if f is k-C0-determinedfor some finite k. We prove a theorem giving a sufficient conditionfor a germ to be finitely topologically determined. We explainthis condition below. Let N and P be two C manifolds. Consider the jet bundle Jk(N,P) with fiber Jk(n, p). Let z in Jk(n, p) and let f be suchthat z = jkf(0). Define Whether (f) < k depends only on z, not on f. We can thereforedefine the set Let Wk(N, P) be the subbundle of Jk(N, P) with fiber Wk(n, p).Mather has constructed a finite Whitney (b)-regular stratificationSk(n, p) of Jk(n, p) – Wk(n, p) such that all strata aresemialgebraic and K-invariant, having the property that if Sk(N,P) denotes the corresponding stratification of Jk(N, P) –Wk(N, P) and f C(N, P) is a C map such that jkf is multitransverseto Sk(N, P), jkf(N) Wk(N, P) = and N is compact (or f is proper),then f is topologically stable. For a map-germ f: (Rn, 0) (Rp, 0), we define a certain ojasiewiczinequality. The inequality implies that there exists a representativef: U Rp such that jkf(U – 0) Wk (Rn, Rp = and suchthat jkf is multitransverse to Sk (Rn, Rp) at any finite setof points S U – 0. Moreover, the inequality controlsthe rate jkf becomes non-transverse as we approach 0. We showthat if f satisfies this inequality, then f is finitely topologicallydetermined. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification: 58C27.  相似文献

Let Pf(x) = –if'(x) and Qf(x) = xf(x) be the canonicaloperators acting on an appropriate common dense domain in L2(R).The derivations DP(A) = i(PAAP) and DQ(A) = i(QAAQ)act on the *-algebra A of all integral operators having smoothkernels of compact support, for example, and one may considerthe noncommutative ‘Laplacian’, L = + , as a linear mapping of A into itself. L generates a semigroup of normal completely positive linearmaps on B(L2(R)), and this paper establishes some basic propertiesof this semigroup and its minimal dilation to an E0-semigroup.In particular, the author shows that its minimal dilation ispure and has no normal invariant states, and he discusses thesignificance of those facts for the interaction theory introducedin a previous paper. There are similar results for the canonical commutation relationswith n degrees of freedom, where 1 n < . 2000 MathematicsSubject Classification 46L57 (primary), 46L53, 46L65 (secondary).  相似文献

It is shown that the asymptotic behaviour of the coefficientsan at high order n and at large wave steepness ak is determinedmainly by the limiting form of the wave crest. In a lower rangeof n, an, decreases like n, corresponding to the Stokes120° corner flow. In an upper range, an, decreases exponentiallywith n. The transition occurs when n3 is O(1) where is relatedto the steepness ak of the waves by 2 = 2.0[(ak)maxak].  相似文献

This paper examines the norms of the projections from C[–1,1] to PM[–1, 1] which are obtained by truncating Chebyshevand ultraspherical expansions after n terms. The norms are evaluatednumerically for n = 1, 2, 3 , ... , 10 and –0.1 5 wherethe ultraspherical weight function is (1 – x2)x.In particular the data show that the norm of the Chebyshev projectionis not the smallest in this range for 1 n 10.  相似文献

Let Fn be the free group of rank n with basis x1, x2, ..., xn,and let d(G) denote the minimal number of generators of thefinitely generated group G. Suppose that n d(G). There existsan exact sequence and wemay view the free abelian group as a right ZG-module by defining (rR')g = rg–1R' for allg G, where g–1 is any preimage of g under , and = (g–1)–1 r(g–1),the conjugate of r by g–1. We call the relation module of G associated with the presentation(1), and say that has ambient rank n. Furthermore, we call the group Fn/R' the free abelianizedextension of G associated with (1). 1991 Mathematics SubjectClassification 20F05, 20C07.  相似文献

In this paper we give lower bounds for the Mislin genus of thesymplectic groups Sp(m). This result appears to be the exactanalogue of Zabrodsky's theorem concerning the special unitarygroups SU(n). It is achieved by the determination of the stablegenus of the quasi-projective quaternionic spaces QH(m), followingthe approach of McGibbon. It leads to a symplectic version ofZabrodsky's conjecture, saying that these lower bounds are infact the exact cardinality of the genus sets. The genus of Sp(2)is well known to contain exactly two elements. We show thatthe genus of Sp(3) has exactly 32 elements and see that theconjecture is true in these two cases. Independently, we also show that any homotopy type in the genusof Sp(m) fibers over the sphere S4m–1 with fiber in thegenus of Sp(m–1), and that any homotopy type in the genusof SU(n) fibers over the sphere S2n–1 with fiber in thegenus of SU(n–1). Moreover, these fibrations are principalwith respect to some appropriate loop structures on the fibers. These constructions permit us to produce particular spaces realizingthe lower bounds obtained. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification55P60 (primary), 55P15, 55R35 (secondary)  相似文献
