Tietze extension theorem for Hilbert -modules

We prove the following generalization of the noncommutative Tietze extension theorem: if is a countably generated Hilbert -module over a -unital -algebra, then the canonical extension of a surjective morphism of Hilbert -modules to extended (multiplier) modules, , is also surjective.

     

Discrete spectra of -algebras and orthogonally closed submodules in Hilbert -modules

Let and be -algebras and let be an --imprimitivity bimodule. Then it is shown that if the spectrum of (resp. of ) is discrete, then every closed --submodule of is orthogonally closed in , and conversely that if (resp. ) is a -space and if every closed --submodule of is orthogonally closed in , then (resp. ) is discrete.

     

A remark on irregularity of the -Neumann problem on non-smooth domains

It is an observation due to J. J. Kohn that for a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain in there exists such that the -Neumann operator on maps (the space of -forms with coefficient functions in -Sobolev space of order ) into itself continuously. We show that this conclusion does not hold without the smoothness assumption by constructing a bounded pseudoconvex domain in , smooth except at one point, whose -Neumann operator is not bounded on for any .

     

Properly -realizable groups

A finitely presented group is said to be properly -realizable if there exists a compact -polyhedron with and whose universal cover has the proper homotopy type of a (p.l.) -manifold with boundary. In this paper we show that, after taking wedge with a -sphere, this property does not depend on the choice of the compact -polyhedron with . We also show that (i) all -ended and -ended groups are properly -realizable, and (ii) the class of properly -realizable groups is closed under amalgamated free products (HNN-extensions) over a finite cyclic group (as a step towards proving that -ended groups are properly -realizable, assuming -ended groups are).

     

The number of Hall -subgroups of a -separable group

We observe a simple formula to compute the number of Hall -subgroups of a -separable finite group in terms of only the action of a fixed Hall -subgroup of on a set of normal -sections of . As a consequence, we obtain that divides whenever is a subgroup of a finite -separable group . This generalizes a recent result of Navarro. In addition, our method gives an alternative proof of Navarro's result.

     

Witt kernels of bilinear forms for algebraic extensions in characteristic

Let be a field of characteristic and let be a purely inseparable extension of exponent . We determine the kernel of the natural restriction map between the Witt rings of bilinear forms of and , respectively. This complements a result by Laghribi who computed the kernel for the Witt groups of quadratic forms for such an extension . Based on this result, we will determine for a wide class of finite extensions which are not necessarily purely inseparable.

     

Linear series over real and -adic fields

We note that the degeneration arguments given by the author in 2003 to derive a formula for the number of maps from a general curve of genus to with prescribed ramification also yields weaker results when working over the real numbers or -adic fields. Specifically, let be such a field: we see that given , , , and satisfying , there exists smooth curves of genus together with points such that all maps from to can, up to automorphism of the image, be defined over . We also note that the analagous result will follow from maps to higher-dimensional projective spaces if it is proven in the case , , and that thanks to work of Sottile, unconditional results may be obtained for special ramification conditions.

     

A hereditarily subspace of without the Schur property

Let p_1 > p_2 > \cdots > 1$">. We construct an easily determined -symmetric basic sequence in , which spans a hereditarily subspace without the Schur property. An immediate consequence is the existence of hereditarily subspaces of without the Schur property.

     

Remarks concerning linear characters of reflection groups

Let be a finite group generated by unitary reflections in a Hermitian space , and let be a root of unity. Let be a subspace of , maximal with respect to the property of being a -eigenspace of an element of , and let be the parabolic subgroup of elements fixing pointwise. If is any linear character of , we give a condition for the restriction of to to be trivial in terms of the invariant theory of , and give a formula for the polynomial , where is the dimension of the -eigenspace of . Applications include criteria for regularity, and new connections between the invariant theory and the structure of .

     

Hopf algebras of dimension

Let be a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. If is not semisimple and for some odd integer , then or is not unimodular. Using this result, we prove that if for some odd prime , then is semisimple. This completes the classification of Hopf algebras of dimension .

     

Local automorphisms and derivations on certain -algebras

It is shown that continuous -local derivations on -algebras are derivations and surjective -local *-automorphisms on prime -algebras or on -algebras such that the identity element is properly infinite are *-automorphisms.

     

Small volume on big -spheres

We consider Riemannian metrics on the -sphere for such that the distance between any pair of antipodal points is bounded below by 1. We show that the volume can be arbitrarily small. This is in contrast to the -dimensional case where Berger has shown that .

     

-function of an operator: A white noise approach

Let be the canonical framework of white noise analysis over the Gel'fand triple and be the space of continuous linear operators from to . Let be a self-adjoint operator in with spectral representation . In this paper, it is proved that under appropriate conditions upon , there exists a unique linear mapping such that for each . The mapping is then naturally used to define as , where is the Dirac -function. Finally, properties of the mapping are investigated and several results are obtained.

     

The -local -homology of

In this paper, we introduce a Hopf algebra, developed by the author and André Henriques, which is usable in the computation of the -homology of a space. As an application, we compute the -homology of in a manner analogous to Mahowald and Milgram's computation of the -homology .

     

On -supplemented maximal and minimal subgroups of Sylow subgroups of finite groups

This paper proves: Let be a saturated formation containing . Suppose that is a group with a normal subgroup such that .

(1) If all maximal subgroups of any Sylow subgroup of are -supple- mented in , then ;

(2) If all minimal subgroups and all cyclic subgroups with order 4 of are -supplemented in , then .

     

The vanishing of implies that is regular

Let be an excellent local ring of positive prime characteristic. We show that if , then is regular. This improves a result of Schoutens, in which the additional hypothesis that was an isolated singularity was required for the proof.

     

A new estimate in optimal mass transport

Let be a bounded Lipschitz regular open subset of and let be two probablity measures on . It is well known that if is absolutely continuous, then there exists, for every , a unique transport map pushing forward on and which realizes the Monge-Kantorovich distance . In this paper, we establish an bound for the displacement map which depends only on , on the shape of and on the essential infimum of the density .

     

On quasi-complete intersections of codimension

In this paper, we prove that if , , is a locally complete intersection of pure codimension and defined scheme-theoretically by three hypersurfaces of degrees , then for using liaison theory and the Arapura vanishing theorem for singular varieties. As a corollary, a smooth threefold is projectively normal if is defined by three quintic hypersurfaces.

     

On frames for countably generated Hilbert -modules

Let be a countably generated Hilbert -module over a -algebra We prove that a sequence is a standard frame for if and only if the sum converges in norm for every and if there are constants such that for every We also prove that surjective adjointable operators preserve standard frames. A class of frames for countably generated Hilbert -modules over the -algebra of all compact operators on some Hilbert space is discussed.

     

Local existence of -sets, projective tensor products, and Arens regularity for

Theorem. If are perfect compact subsets of the locally compact metrizable abelian group, then there are pairwise disjoint perfect subsets such that (i) is either a Kronecker set or (ii) for some , is a translate of a -set all of whose elements have order , and (iii) is isomorphic to the projective tensor product .

This extends what was previously known for groups such as or for the case to the general locally compact abelian group. Old results concerning the local existence of Kronecker and -sets are improved.
