Summary. Some general subspace correction algorithms are proposed for a convex optimization problem over a convex constraint subset. One of the nontrivial applications of the algorithms is the solving of some obstacle problems by multilevel domain decomposition and multigrid methods. For domain decomposition and multigrid methods, the rate of convergence for the algorithms for obstacle problems is of the same order as the rate of convergence for jump coefficient linear elliptic problems. In order to analyse the convergence rate, we need to decompose a finite element function into a sum of functions from the subspaces and also satisfying some constraints. A special nonlinear interpolation operator is introduced for decomposing the functions. Burke (1987) has recently developed second-order necessary and sufficient conditions for convex composite optimization in the case where the convex function is finite valued. In this note we present a technique for reducing the infinite valued case to the finite valued one. We then use this technique to extend the results in Burke (1987) to the case in which the convex function may take infinite values. We conclude by comparing these results with those established by Rockafellar (1989) for the piecewise linear-quadratic case.Dedicated to the memory of Robin W. This paper presents an algorithm based on barrier functions for solving semi-infinite minimax problems which arise in an engineering design setting. The algorithm bears a resemblance to some of the current interior penalty function methods used to solve constrained minimization problems. Global convergence is proven, and numerical results are reported which show that the algorithm is exceptionally robust, and that its performance is comparable, while its structure is simpler than that of current first-order minimax algorithms.This research was supported by the National Science Foundation grant ECS-8517362, the Air Force Office Scientific Research grant 86-0116, the California State MICRO program, and the United Kingdom Science and Engineering Research Council.  相似文献

The composite trapezoidal rule has been well studied and widely applied for numerical integrations and numerical solution of integral equations with smooth or weakly singular kernels. However, this quadrature rule has been less employed for Hadamard finite part integrals due to the fact that its global convergence rate for Hadamard finite part integrals with (p+1)-order singularity is p-order lower than that for the Riemann integrals in general. In this paper, we study the superconvergence of the composite trapezoidal rule for Hadamard finite part integrals with the second-order and the third-order singularity, respectively. We obtain superconvergence estimates at some special points and prove the uniqueness of the superconvergence points. Numerical experiments confirm our theoretical analysis and show that the composite trapezoidal rule is efficient for Hadamard finite part integrals by noting the superconvergence phenomenon. We study the general (composite) Newton–Cotes rules for the computation of Hadamard finite-part integral with the second-order singularity and focus on their pointwise superconvergence phenomenon, i.e., when the singular point coincides with some a priori known point, the convergence rate is higher than what is globally possible. We show that the superconvergence rate of the (composite) Newton–Cotes rules occurs at the zeros of a special function and prove the existence of the superconvergence points. Several numerical examples are provided to validate the theoretical analysis. The work of J. In recent years, domain decomposition methods have attracted much attention due to their successful application to many elliptic and parabolic problems. Domain decomposition methods treat problems based on a domain substructuring, which is attractive for parallel computation, due to the independence among the subdomains. In principle, domain decomposition methods may be applied to the system resulting from a standard discretization of the parabolic problems or, directly, be carried out through a discretization of parabolic problems. In this paper, a direct domain decomposition method is introduced to discretize the parabolic problems. The stability and convergence of this algorithm are analyzed. Penalty algorithms for constrained minimax problems typically involve a sequence of unconstrained approximates which is pointwise monotone in each variable. We describe an adaptive mesh refinement finite element method-of-lines procedure for solving one-dimensional parabolic partial differential equations. Solutions are calculated using Galerkin's method with a piecewise hierarchical polynomial basis in space and singly implicit Runge-Kutta (SIRK) methods in time. A modified SIRK formulation eliminates a linear systems solution that is required by the traditional SIRK formulation and leads to a new reduced-order interpolation formula. Stability and temporal error estimation techniques allow acceptance of approximate solutions at intermediate stages, yielding increased efficiency when solving partial differential equations. A priori energy estimates of the local discretization error are obtained for a nonlinear scalar problem. A posteriori estimates of local spatial discretization errors, obtained by order variation, are used with the a priori error estimates to control the adaptive mesh refinement strategy. Summary We present a (semilocal) Kantorovich-type analysis for Newton-like methods for singular operator equations using outer inverses. We establish sharp generalizations of the Kantorovich theory and the Mysovskii theory for operator equations when the derivative is not necessarily invertible. The results reduce in the case of an invertible derivative to well-known theorems of Kantorovich and Mysovskii with no additional assumptions, unlike earlier theorems which impose strong conditions. The strategy of the analysis is based on Banach-type lemmas and perturbation bounds for outer inverses which show that the set of outer inverses (to a given bounded linear operator) admits selections that behave like bounded linear inverses, in contrast to inner inverses or generalized inverses which do not depend continuously on perturbations of the operator. We give two examples to illustrate our results and compare them with earlier results, and another numerical example to relate our results to computational issues.The research of the first author was partially supported by the National Science Foundation under grant DMS-901526. We derive compact representations of BFGS and symmetric rank-one matrices for optimization. These representations allow us to efficiently implement limited memory methods for large constrained optimization problems. In particular, we discuss how to compute projections of limited memory matrices onto subspaces. Preconditioning strategies based on incomplete factorizations and polynomial approximations are studied through extensive numerical experiments. We are concerned with the question of the optimal rate of convergence that can be achieved for these classes of preconditioners.Our conclusion is that the well-known Modified Incomplete Cholesky factorization (MIC), cf. e.g., Gustafsson [20], and the polynomial preconditioning based on the Chebyshev polynomials, cf. Johnson, Micchelli and Paul [22], have optimal order of convergence as applied to matrix systems derived by discretization of the Poisson equation. Thus for the discrete two-dimensional Poisson equation withn unknowns,O(n 1/4) andO(n 1/2) seem to be the optimal rates of convergence for the Conjugate Gradient (CG) method using incomplete factorizations and polynomial preconditioners, respectively. The results obtained for polynomial preconditioners are in agreement with the basic theory of CG, which implies that such preconditioners can not lead to improvement of the asymptotic convergence rate.By optimizing the preconditioners with respect to certain criteria, we observe a reduction of the number of CG iterations, but the rates of convergence remain unchanged.Supported by The Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities (NAVF) under grants no. 413.90/002 and 412.93/005.Supported by The Royal Norwegian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (NTNF) through program no. In this paper, we consider a class of stochastic mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints introduced by Birbil et al. (Math Oper Res 31:739–760, 2006). Firstly, by means of a Monte Carlo method, we obtain a nonsmooth discrete approximation of the original problem. Then, we propose a smoothing method together with a penalty technique to get a standard nonlinear programming problem. Some convergence results are established. Moreover, since quasi-Monte Carlo methods are generally faster than Monte Carlo methods, we discuss a quasi-Monte Carlo sampling approach as well. Furthermore, we give an example in economics to illustrate the model and show some numerical results with this example. LSQR uses the Golub-Kahan bidiagonalization process to solve sparse least-squares problems with and without regularization. In some cases, projections of the right-hand side vector are required, rather than the least-squares solution itself. We show that projections may be obtained from the bidiagonalization as linear combinations of (the-oretically) orthogonal vectors. Even the least-squares solution may be obtained from orthogonal vectors, perhaps more accurately than the usual LSQR solution. (However, LSQR has proved equally good in all examples so far.) We describe a procedure for determining a few of the largest singular values of a large sparse matrix. The method by Golub and Kent which uses the method of modified moments for estimating the eigenvalues of operators used in iterative methods for the solution of linear systems of equations is appropriately modified in order to generate a sequence of bidiagonal matrices whose singular values approximate those of the original sparse matrix. A simple Lanczos recursion is proposed for determining the corresponding left and right singular vectors. The potential asynchronous computation of the bidiagonal matrices using modified moments with the iterations of an adapted Chebyshev semi-iterative (CSI) method is an attractive feature for parallel computers. Comparisons in efficiency and accuracy with an appropriate Lanczos algorithm (with selective re-orthogonalization) are presented on large sparse (rectangular) matrices arising from applications such as information retrieval and seismic reflection tomography. Summary A parallel projection algorithm is proposed to solve the generalized linear least-squares problem: find a vector to minimize the 2-norm distance from its image under an affine mapping to a closed convex cone. In each iteration of the algorithm the problem is decomposed into several independent small problems of finding projections onto subspaces, which are simple and can be tackled parallelly. The algorithm can be viewed as a dual version of the algorithm proposed by Han and Lou [8]. For the special problem under consideration, stronger convergence results are established. We develop a convergence theory for convex and linearly constrained trust region methods which only requires that the step between iterates produce a sufficient reduction in the trust region subproblem. Global convergence is established for general convex constraints while the local analysis is for linearly constrained problems. The main local result establishes that if the sequence converges to a nondegenerate stationary point then the active constraints at the solution are identified in a finite number of iterations. As a consequence of the identification properties, we develop rate of convergence results by assuming that the step is a truncated Newton method. Newton's method for solving a nonlinear equation of several variables is extended to a nonsmooth case by using the generalized Jacobian instead of the derivative. This extension includes the B-derivative version of Newton's method as a special case. Convergence theorems are proved under the condition of semismoothness. It is shown that the gradient function of the augmented Lagrangian forC 2-nonlinear programming is semismooth. In this paper, an adaptive finite element method for elliptic eigenvalue problems is studied. Both uniform convergence and optimal complexity of the adaptive finite element eigenvalue approximation are proved. The analysis is based on a certain relationship between the finite element eigenvalue approximation and the associated finite element boundary value approximation which is also established in the paper. The alternate-block-factorization (ABF) method is a procedure for partially decoupling systems of elliptic partial differential equations by means of a carefully chosen change of variables. By decoupling we mean that the ABF strategy attempts to reduce intra-equation coupling in the system rather than intra-grid coupling for a single elliptic equation in the system. This has the effect of speeding convergence of commonly used iteration schemes, which use the solution of a sequence of linear elliptic PDEs as their main computational step. Algebraically, the change of variables is equivalent to a postconditioning of the original system. The results of using ABF postconditioning on some problems arising from semiconductor device simulation are discussed.The work of R. E.
