Let G be a finite group and W be a faithful representation of G over C. The group G acts on the field of rational functions C(W). The question whether the field of invariant functions C(W) G is purely transcendental over C goes back to Emmy Noether. Using the unramified cohomology group of degree 2 of this field as an invariant, Saltman gave the first examples for which C(W) G is not rational over C. Around 1986, Bogomolov gave a formula which expresses this cohomology group in terms of the cohomology of the group G. In this paper, we prove a formula for the prime to 2 part of the unramified cohomology group of degree 3 of C(W) G . Specializing to the case where G is a central extension of an F p -vector space by another, we get a method to construct nontrivial elements in this unramified cohomology group. In this way we get an example of a group G for which the field C(W) G is not rational although its unramified cohomology group of degree 2 is trivial. Dedicated to Jean-Louis Colliot-Thélène.  相似文献

The goal of this article is two-fold. First, we consider a class of hyperholomorphic functions, the so called B p, q (G) space in ?3. Then, we use the B p, q (G) space to characterize the hyperholomorphic α-Bloch space. Second, we obtain characterizations of the weighted hyperholomorphic B p, q (G)-functions by the coefficients of certain lacunary series expansions in Clifford Analysis.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Let G be a finite group and cd(G) the character degrees of G. The degree graph Δ(G) of G is the graph whose vertices are the primes dividing degrees in cd(G), and there is an edge between p and q if pq divides some degree in cd(G). In this paper, we show that if Δ(G) has 5 vertices, then the diameter of Δ(G) is at most 2. This shows that the example in[9] of a solvable group G where Δ(G) has diameter 3 has the fewest number of vertices possible.  相似文献

In this article, we show that if p is a prime and G is a p-solvable group, then |G: O p (G)| p  ≤ (b(G) p /p)1/(p?1), where b(G) is the largest character degree of G. If p is an odd prime that is not a Mersenne prime or if the nilpotence class of a Sylow p-subgroup of G is at most p, then |G: O p (G)| p  ≤ b(G).  相似文献

In [1], we defined c(G), q(G) and p(G). In this paper we will show that if G is a p-group, where p is an odd prime and |G| ≤ p 4, then c(G) = q(G) = p(G). However, the question of whether or not there is a p-group G with strict inequality c(G) = q(G) < p(G) is still open.  相似文献

Abstract

Let  be a simple classical Lie algebra over a field F of characteristic p > 7. We show that > d () = 2, where d() is the number of generators of . Let G be a profinite group. We say that G has lower rankl, if there are {G α} open subgroups which from a base for the topology at the identity and each G α is generated (topologically) by no more than l elements. There is a standard way to associate a Lie algebra L(G) to a finitely generated (filtered) pro-p group G. Suppose L(G) ?  ? tF p [t], where  is a simple Lie algebra over F p , the field of p elements. We show that the lower rank of G is ≤ d () + 1. We also show that if  is simple classical of rank r and p > 7 or p 2r 2 ? r, then the lower rank is actually 2.  相似文献

Let G be a finite group with derived subgroup of rank r. We prove that |G: Z 2(G)| ≤ |G′|2r . Motivated by the results of I. M. Isaacs in [5] we show that if G is capable then |G: Z(G)| ≤ |G′|4r . This answers a question of L. Pyber. We prove that if G is a capable p-group then the rank of G/Z(G) is bounded above in terms of the rank of G′.  相似文献

Let G be a finite group. The symmetric genus σ(G) is the minimum genus of any Riemann surface on which G acts. We show that a non-cyclic p-group G has symmetric genus not congruent to 1(mod p 3) if and only if G is in one of 10 families of groups. The genus formula for each of these 10 families of groups is determined. A consequence of this classification is that almost all positive integers that are the genus of a p-group are congruent to 1(mod p 3). Finally, the integers that occur as the symmetric genus of a p-group with Frattini-class 2 have density zero in the positive integers.  相似文献

We consider an R G-module A over a commutative Noetherian ring R. Let G be a group having infinite section p-rank (or infinite 0-rank) such that C G (A) = 1, A/C A (G) is not a Noetherian R-module, but the quotient A/C A (H) is a Noetherian R-module for every proper subgroup H of infinite section p-rank (or infinite 0-rank, respectively). In this paper, it is proved that if G is a locally soluble group, then G is soluble. Some properties of soluble groups of this type are also obtained.  相似文献

A direction–length framework is a pair (G,p) where G=(V;D,L) is a ‘mixed’ graph whose edges are labelled as ‘direction’ or ‘length’ edges and p is a map from V to ℝ d for some d. The label of an edge uv represents a direction or length constraint between p(u) and p(v). Let G + be obtained from G by adding, for each length edge e of G, a direction edge with the same end vertices as e. We show that (G,p) is bounded if and only if (G +,p) is infinitesimally rigid. This gives a characterization of when (G,p) is bounded in terms of the rank of the rigidity matrix of (G +,p). We use this to characterize when a mixed graph is generically bounded in ℝ d . As an application we deduce that if (G,p) is a globally rigid generic framework with at least two length edges and e is a length edge of G then (Ge,p) is bounded.  相似文献

We prove that a 2-group has exactly five rational irreducible characters if and only if it is dihedral, semidihedral or generalized quaternion. For an arbitrary prime p, we say that an irreducible character χ of a p-group G is “almost rational” if ℚ(χ) is contained in the cyclotomic field ℚ p , and we write ar(G) to denote the number of almost-rational irreducible characters of G. For noncyclic p-groups, the two smallest possible values for ar(G) are p 2 and p 2 + p − 1, and we study p-groups G for which ar(G) is one of these two numbers. If ar(G) = p 2 + p − 1, we say that G is “exceptional”. We show that for exceptional groups, |G: G′| = p 2, and so the assertion about 2-groups with which we began follows from this. We show also that for each prime p, there are exceptional p-groups of arbitrarily large order, and for p ≥ 5, there is a pro-p-group with the property that all of its finite homomorphic images of order at least p 3 are exceptional.  相似文献

Let p be a prime number and G be a finite commutative group such that p 2 does not divide the order of G. In this note we prove that for every finite module M over the group ring Z p [G], the inequality #M  £  #Zp[G]/FitZp[G](M){\#M\,\leq\,\#{\bf Z}_{p}[G]/{{\rm Fit}}_{{\bf Z}_{p}[G]}(M)} holds. Here, FitZp[G](M){\rm Fit}_{{\bf Z}_{p}[G]}(M) is the Z p [G]-Fitting ideal of M.  相似文献

A bar framework G(p) in r-dimensional Euclidean space is a graph G on the vertices 1, 2, . . . , n, where each vertex i is located at point p i in \mathbbRr{\mathbb{R}^r} . Given a framework G(p) in \mathbbRr{\mathbb{R}^r} , a problem of great interest is that of determining whether or not there exists another framework G(q), not obtained from G(p) by a rigid motion, such that ||q i q j ||2 = ||p i p j ||2 for each edge (i, j) of G. This problem is known as either the global rigidity problem or the universal rigidity problem depending on whether such a framework G(q) is restricted to be in the same r-dimensional space or not. The stress matrix S of a bar framework G(p) plays a key role in these and other related problems. In this paper, semidefinite programming (SDP) theory is used to address, in a unified manner, several problems concerning universal rigidity. New results are presented as well as new proofs of previously known theorems. In particular, we use the notion of SDP non-degeneracy to obtain a sufficient condition for universal rigidity, and we show that this condition yields the previously known sufficient condition for generic universal rigidity. We present new results concerning positive semidefinite stress matrices and we use a semidefinite version of Farkas lemma to characterize bar frameworks that admit a nonzero positive semidefinite stress matrix S.  相似文献

For a finite group G and a prime p the poset Sp (G) of all subgroups HG of p-power index is studied. The Möbius number of the poset is given and the homotopy type of the poset is determined as a wedge of spheres. We describe the representation of G on the homology groups of the order complex of Sp (G) and show that this representation can be realized by matrices with entries in the set {+1, -1, 0}. Finally a CL-shellable subposet of Sp (G) is exhibited for odd primes p.  相似文献

Let U = U(q) be a Sylow p-subgroup of a finite Chevalley group G = G(q). Röhrle and Goodwin in 2009 determined a parameterization of the conjugacy classes of U, for G of small rank when q is a power of a good prime for G. As a consequence they verified that the number k(U) of conjugacy classes of U is given by a polynomial in q with integer coefficients. In the present paper, we consider the case when p is a bad prime for G. Our motivation is to observe how the situation differs between good and bad characteristics. We obtain a parameterization of the conjugacy classes of U, when G has rank less than or equal to 4, and G is not of type F 4. In these cases we deduce that k(U) is given by a polynomial in q with integer coefficients; this polynomial is different from the polynomial for good primes.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to prove Paley type inequalities for two-parameter Vilenkin system. Our main result is the following estimate:
for martingales f H p (G p × G q ) (0 < p 1). Here G p and G q are Vilenkin groups generated by the sequences p = (p n ) and q = (q n ), respectively, and f^(u, v) (u, v N) is the (u,v)th (two-parameter) Vilenkin-Fourier coefficient of f. The Hardy space H p (G p × G q ) is defined by means of a usual martingal maximal function.We get the inequality (*) from its dual version, especially it follows from a BMO-result in the case p = 1. Furthermore, interpolation leads to an L p -variant of (*) for 1 < p 2. We also formulate an analogous statement for another Hardy space. In the so-called unbounded case, i.e. when p or q is not bounded, we shall investigate whether (*) can be improved. Our results hold also in the case of higher dimensions.  相似文献

The definition of the group near-ring R[G] of the near-ring R over the group G as a near-ring of mappings from R (G) to itself is due to Le Riche et al. (Arch Math 52:132–139, 1989). In this paper we consider the augmentation ideal Δ of R[G]. If the exponent of G is not 2, then the structure of ΔR (G) is determined in terms of commutators and distributors. This is then used to show that Δ is nilpotent if and only if R is weakly distributive, has characteristic p n for some prime p and G is a finite p-group for the same prime p.   相似文献

LetG be an infinite compact abelian group,μ a Borel measure onG with spectrumE, and 0<p<1. We show that ifμ is not absolutely continuous with respect to Haar measure, thenL E P (G), the closure inL p (G) of theE-trigonometric polynomials, does not have enough continuous linear functionals to separate points. Ifμ is actually singular, thenL E p (G) does not have any nontrivial continuous linear functionals at all. Our methods recover the classical F. and M. Riesz theorem, and a related several variable result of Bochner; they reveal the existence of small sets of characters that spanL P (T), where T is the unit circle; and they show that theH p spaces of the “big disc algebra” have one-dimensional dual.  相似文献

Let P be a non-Abelian finite p-group, p odd, with cyclic maximal subgroups, and let K(n)*(–) denote the nth Morava K-theory at p. In this paper we determine the algebras K(n)*(BP) and K(n)*(BG) for all groups G with Sylow p-subgroups isomorphic to P, giving further evidence for the fact that Morava K-theory as an invariant of finite groups, is finer than ordinary modp cohomology. For a (finite) groupG and some prime powerp n, theH p n -subgroupH pn (G) is defined byH p n (G)=〈xεG|x pn≠1〉. A groupH≠1 is called aH p n -group, if there is a finite groupG such thatH is isomorphic toH p n (G) andH p n (G)≠G. It is known that the Fitting length of a solvableH p n -group cannot be arbitrarily large: Hartley and Rae proved in 1973 that it is bounded by some quadratic function ofn. In the following paper, we show that it is even bounded by some linear function ofn. In view of known examples of solvableH p n -groups having Fitting lengthn, this result is “almost” best possible.  相似文献
