Permeability, diffusion, and solubility coefficients for H2O vapor in four different 6FDA-based polyimides were determined at temperatures between 25 and 45°C and over a wide range of relative humidities. The solubility of H2O vapor in some of the polyimides studied can be described by the “dual-mode sorption” model whereas in other polyimides it is represented by the Flory-Huggins equation, which suggests that the latter polymers are plasticized by H2O. The solubility of H2O vapor in the polyimides decreases as the temperature is raised and increases with increasing polarity of the polymer. The diffusion coefficients for H2O in the polyimides studied either increase or pass through a weak maximum with increasing H2O activity, or concentration in the polymers. The latter behavior is probably due to a clustering of H2O molecules in the polyimides at higher H2O activities or concentrations. The diffusion coefficients for H2O decrease as the chain-packing density of the polyimides increases. The permeability coefficients for H2O vapor in 6FDA-based polyimide membranes either increase slightly or are constant as the H2O activity is increased. The experimental values of the permeability coefficients are consistent with the values determined from diffusion and solubility coefficients. The permeability of the polyimides to H2O vapor appears to be controlled by the solubility of H2O in the polymers. The polyimides studied exhibit a very high selectivity for H2O vapor relative to CH4, and therefore are potentially useful membrane materials for the dehydration of natural gas. ©1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Thianthrene - 2,3,7,8 - tetracarboxylic dianhydride - 5,5,10,10 - tetraoxide (TADATO), a dianhydride having two sulfonyls between two phenyl rings, was synthesized and polymerized with several diamines by a two-step method. Tough polyimide membranes were obtained with flexible diamines but not with rigid diamines. Most of TADATO-based polyimides are soluble in polar solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. IR study confirmed that almost complete imidization of TADATO-based poly(amic acid) membranes could be achieved by thermal treatment at 100, 200, and 300°C for each 1 h. In a series of polyimides based on 4,4′-oxydianiline, the polyimide from TADATO showed higher gas permeability coefficient of CO2 and higher selectivities of CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 than those of polyimides from pyromellitic dianhydride and 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride, and was comparable to that from 2,2-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Sorption of single‐component vapors of benzene (Bz), n‐hexane (Hx), and cyclohexane (Cx), and of binary liquid mixtures of Bz/Hx and Bz/Cx in a polyimide from 3,3′,4,4′‐diphenylsulfone‐tetracarboxylic dianhydride (DSDA) and 2,8(6)‐dimethyl‐3,7‐diaminobenzothiophene‐5,5‐dioxide (DDBT) were investigated in detail at 333 K. Sorption and desorption of vapors followed the non‐Fickian kinetics and the sorption isotherms were concave to the vapor activity. For the binary liquids, the sorption isotherms of the Bz component were concave to the Bz composition in feed, whereas those of Hx and Cx were convex because of competitive sorption. As a result, the solubility selectivity was much larger than the sorption ratio of pure liquids. The concentration‐averaged diffusion coefficients of Bz (D̄Bz) and Hx (D̄Hx) were evaluated using the sorption and pervaporation data of the polyimide membrane toward the binary mixtures. A kind of coupling effect of the coexisting component on D̄ was observed. That is, D̄ of penetrant with smaller molecular size (Hx and Bz for Bz/Hx and Bz/Cx systems, respectively) was reduced by the presence of penetrant with larger molecular size (Bz and Cx, respectively) and vice versa. D̄Bz was similar to D̄Hx, but much larger than D̄Cx. The difference in PV behavior between Bz/Hx and Bz/Cx systems for glassy polymer membranes was understood based on the aforementioned features of sorption and diffusion. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Novel sulfonated polyimides (SPIs) were prepared from 1,4,5,8‐naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA), 2,2′‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)biphenyl‐5,5′‐disulfonic acid (oBAPBDS) with nonlinear configuration, and common nonsulfonated diamines. Water uptake (WU) in liquid and vapor, water stability, and proton conductivity σ of the resulting SPI membranes were investigated. They were soluble in m‐cresol and dimethylsulfoxide, and their WUs in liquid were much larger than those of the SPIs from other sulfonated diamines with linear configuration such as 4,4′‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)biphenyl‐3,3′‐disulfonic acid (BAPBDS). NTDA‐oBAPBDS membrane was soluble in water at room temperature, whereas all the oBAPBDS‐based copolyimide membranes were insoluble in water and maintained mechanical strength after being soaked in distilled water at 80 °C for 40–1000 h. This much improved water stability was due to the enhanced solubility stability of membrane toward water. The water vapor sorption isotherms were rather similar between the SPIs with the nonlinear and linear configurations of sulfonated diamine moieties. The present SPIs with IECs of 1.8–2.6 meq/g, including NTDA‐BAPBDS, showed reasonably high proton conductivities under the highly humid conditions and roughly fell on the same σ–WU relation line. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel method for the preparation of ultrathin films of aromatic polyimides was developed through vapor deposition polymerization from combinations of monomer pairs of either N,N′-bis (trimethylsilyl)-substituted aromatic diamines and pyromellitic dianhydride or aromatic diamines and pyromellitic dithioanhydride. Both diamine component and tetracarboxylic dianhydride component were evaporated simultaneously at a stoichiometric molar ratio under vacuum, giving a deposited film on a substrate, which consisted of a polyamic acid derivative formed by the ring-opening polyaddition. The deposit was then converted to polyimide by thermal imidization at a relatively lower temperature, compared with a conventional method using the parent diamine and tetracarboxylic dianhydride. The properties of polyimide ultrathin films such as thermal stability, chemical resistance, and dielectric behavior were almost the same as those of the polyimide films prepared by a conventional method.  相似文献

CO2 sorption and transport were investigated for the polyimide prepared from 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) and 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS). The morphology of films did not change on annealing above the glass transition temperature and remained amorphous unlike the polyimide prepared from BPDA and 4,4′-oxydianilline (ODA). This seems to be due to the strong hindrance to rotation of the sulfonyl linkage. Sorption and transport data were analyzed according to the dual-mode model. Solubility, diffusion, and permeability coefficients at 20 atm and 80°C for BPDA-DDS polyimide were substantially equal between as-cast and annealed films and were 1.7, 2.2, and 3.7 times greater, respectively, than for the as-cast films of the BPDA-ODA polyimide. The higher solubility was due to larger values of the Henry's law solubility constant kD, Langmuir capacity constant C, and the Langmuir affinity constant b. The sorption and transport properties were compared with those for amorphous glassy aromatic polymers including other polyimides. The relation of k, C, b, and the diffusion coefficients in the Henry's law population and the Langmuir population (DD and DH) with other properties of the polymers were discussed. Values DD and DH for BPDA-DDS polyimide were much larger than expected from the estimated free-volume fraction.  相似文献

Thin-film polyimides were prepared by solvent-less vapor deposition polymerization (VDP) from pyromellitic dianhydride and 4,4′-oxydianiline at 200 °C for liner dielectric formation of vertical interconnects called through-silicon vias (TSVs) used in three-dimensionally stacked integrated circuit (3DICs). FTIR, synchrotron XPS, and TDS were employed for determining the imidization ratio, and in addition, the mechanical properties, coefficient of thermal expansion and Young's modulus, of the VDP polyimide were characterized on Si wafers. The VDP polyimide exhibited extremely high conformality, beyond 75%, toward high-aspect-ratio deep Si holes, compared with conventional SiO2 prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The adhesion between the VDP polyimide and Si wafer was enhanced by an Al-chelate promotor. Remarkably, the VDP polyimide TSV liner dielectrics showed much less thermomechanical stresses applied to the Si surrounding the TSVs than the plasma-chemical vapor deposition SiO2. The small keep-out zone is expected for scaling down highly reliable 3DICs for the upcoming real artificial intelligence society.  相似文献

Sorption rate curves of CO2, N2, and He gases below 1 atm were measured for polyimide films prepared from benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) with 3,5-diaminotoluene trifluoride (DATF), 2,4-diaminotoluene (DAT), m-phenylenediamine (MPD), and diaminobenzoic acid (DABA). The molecular structures of these four polyimides differ only in the substituent groups of the diamine structure. These polyimides exhibit dualmode type sorption isotherms for carbon dioxide that are concave to the pressure axis, typical of glassy polymer/gas system. The apparent diffusion coefficients below 1 atm pressure of carbon dioxide for this series of compounds decrease in the order: BTDA-DATF > BTDA-DAT > BTDA-MPD > BTDA-DABA. A linear relation between the logarithm of the apparent diffusion coefficient and the reciprocal of free volume, calculated by the method of Bondi using density data, is found for these polyimides. However, this tendency is not observed for the other two gases. The activation energies of the apparent diffusion coefficients at 20 cmHg pressure of carbon dioxide increase with increasing cohesive energy density of the polyimides. The energy per mole of free volume elements in a liquidlike structure in each cohesive energy density may be equated to the activation energy and used to calculate the free volume. The values from the activation energy are almost the same as those from Bondi's method.  相似文献

1,1‐Bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]‐1‐phenylethane (BAPPE) was prepared through nucleophilic substitution reaction of 1,1‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐1‐phenylethane and p‐chloronitrobenzene in the presence of K2CO3 in N,N‐dimethylformamide, followed by catalytic reduction with hydrazine and Pd/C. Novel organosoluble polyimides and copolyimides were synthesized from BAPPE and six kinds of commercial dianhydrides, including pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA, Ia ), 3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA, Ib ), 3,3′,4,4′‐ biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA, Ic ), 4,4′‐oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA, Id ), 3,3′,4,4′‐diphenylsulfonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (DSDA, Ie ) and 4,4′‐hexafluoroisopropylidenediphthalic anhydride (6FDA, If ). Differing with the conventional polyimide process by thermal cyclodehydration of poly(amic acid), when polyimides were prepared by chemical cyclodehydration with N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone as used solvent, resulted polymers showed good solubility. Additional, Ia,b were mixed respectively with the rest of dianhydrides (Ic–f) and BAPPE at certain molar ratios to prepare copolyimides with arbitrary solubilities. These polyimides and copolyimides were characterized by good mechanical properties together with good thermal stability. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Sorption and diffusion of gases (CO2, N2, and He) in a polyimide (PI2080) film were measured by using an apparatus which gives the sorption rate curves from the initial state to the equilibrium state. Nonlinear isotherms observed for CO2 sorption were interpreted successfully in terms of the dual-mode model for sorption in glassy polymers. Linear isotherms observed for N2 and He seemed to obey Henry's law. Two diffusion coefficients (DI and DE) were obtained using the short-time method and the long-time method for a Fickian diffusion model, together with the equilibrium solubility (Ce) from each experiment. The initial sorption rate curves agreed with the calculated curves using DI, however near sorption equilibrium the curves are in accord with the calculated curves using DE. These observations suggest that some relaxation process is superimposed on the diffusion process. The non-Fickian transport data were correlated successfully with a model that combines time-dependent diffusion and the Fickian model.  相似文献

Gas-separating membrane characteristics of polyimide films composed of the common fragment of benzophenone-3,3′,4,4′-tetracarboxylic dianhydride and diamines of varying structure were studied. Permeability coefficient P, diffusion coefficient D, and solubility coefficient S for H2, CO, CO2, and CH4 were determined. The polyimide derived from m-phenylenediamine exhibited the best gas-separating properties. A relationship between the chain rigidity, free volume, and transport parameters (P, D, S, and selectivity) of polyimide was established on the basis of the data. It was shown that there is an optimal chain rigidity for the studied polyimides that results in polymer structurization during film preparation and corresponds to high separation selectivity.  相似文献

For polyimide thin films, the dielectric properties were investigated with the capacitance and optical methods. The dielectric constants of the 4,4′‐oxydianiline (ODA)‐based polyimide thin films varied from 2.49 to 3.10 and were in the following decreasing order: 3,3′,4,4′‐biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA)–ODA > 1,2,4,5‐benzenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PMDA)–ODA > 4,4′‐hexafluoroisopropylidene diphthalic dianhydride (6FDA)–ODA. According to the absorption of water, the diffusion coefficients in the films varied from 4.8 × 10?10 to 7.2 × 10?10 cm2/s and were in the following increasing order: BPDA–ODA < PMDA–ODA < 6FDA–ODA. The dielectric constants and diffusion coefficients of the polyimides were affected by the morphological structures, including the molecular packing order. However, because of the water uptake, the changes in the dielectric constants in the polyimide thin films varied from 0.49 to 1.01 and were in the following increasing order: BPDA–ODA < 6FDA–ODA < PMDA–ODA. Surprisingly, 6FDA–ODA with bulky hexafluoroisopropylidene groups showed less of a change in its dielectric constant than PMDA–ODA. The total water uptake for the polyimide thin films varied from 1.43 to 3.19 wt % and was in the following increasing order: BPDA–ODA < 6FDA–ODA < PMDA–ODA. This means that the changes in the dielectric constants in the polyimide thin films were significantly related to the morphological structure and hydrophobicity of hexafluoroisopropylidene groups. Therefore, the morphological structure and chemical affinity in the polyimide thin films were important factors in controlling the dielectric properties. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sorption and transport of CO2 have been investigated for polyimide films prepared from 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) and 4,4′-oxydianilline (ODA) as well as for a chemically identical commercial polyimide film, Upilex-R. The BPDA-ODA polyimide films annealed above the glass transition temperature (270°C) are found to have some degree of ordering owing to molecular aggregation of polymer chains, whereas the films as-cast are amorphous. The solubility, permeability, and diffusion coefficients decrease significantly with increasing density or increasing average degree of molecular aggregation. The influence of morphology on the parameters in the dual-mode sorption and transport model has also been investigated. With an increase in density, the Langmuir capacity constant and the diffusion coefficients for Henry's law and Langmuir populations decrease by a larger factor than the Henry's law solubility constant. These results can be tentatively interpreted by assuming either a one-phase or two-phase structure for these polyimide films.  相似文献

Sorption isotherms of CO2 for ten fluorinated polyimides measured at 35°C and up to about 25 atm are analyzed according to the dual-mode sorption model. Sorption properties for these polyimides are compared with those for other glassy Polymers including unfluorinated polyimides. The glassy polymers with higher glass transition temperatures Tg tend to show greater CO2 sorption. Introduction of a ? C (CF3)2? linkage into the repeat unit of the main chain increases the sorption by 20–80%. For glassy polymers, including the fluorinated and unfluorinated polyimides, the Langmuir affinity constant b and Henry's law solubility constant kD are correlated with the content of functional (carbonyl or sulfonyl) groups [FG], and composite parameter reflecting the magnitude of both [FG] and free-space fraction VF, respectively, with some exceptions. The Langmuir capacity constant CH is correlated with Tg, but there are two correlation lines; one for unfluorinated polyimides and a different one for other glassy polymers including fluorinated polyimides. The slope of the former group is smaller probably because of smaller differences in thermal probably because of smaller differences in thermal expansion coefficients in rubbery and glassy states. Most fluorinated polyimides show greater solubility of CO2 than unfluorinated polyimides and other glassy polymers, because of their larger CH and kD. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Various polyimide layers [2.2–2.6 μm of hexafluoroisopropylidene bis(phthalic anhydride‐oxydianiline), pyromellitic dianhydride‐oxydianiline, and 3,3′‐4,4′‐biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride‐p‐phenylenediamine] spin‐coated on silicon substrates were studied with a variable‐energy positron beam in combination with a Doppler‐broadened annihilation radiation technique. From the experiments, the thickness of the layers was estimated with the VEPFIT routine. These values corresponded well to the values determined from interferometry and ellipsometry. Irradiation of the polyimides with 1 × 1015 boron ions/cm2 at an energy of 180 keV led to a strong chemical modification of the irradiated top layer. This caused the inhibition of positronium formation in the irradiated layer, which was observed as a lowering of the annihilation line S parameter. The thickness of the modified layer was estimated to be 700–800 nm. This value did not agree with the ellipsometric measurements but corresponded to the maximum implantation depth of boron ions calculated with TRIM (Transport of Ions in Matter) code. The positron results appeared somewhat larger than the TRIM estimates. Reasons for these relations are discussed. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A new kink diamine with trifluoromethyl group on either side, bis[4-(2-trifluoromethyl-4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]diphenylmethane (BTFAPDM) , was reacted with various aromatic dianhydrides to prepare polyimides via poly (amic acid) precursors followed by thermal or chemical imidization. Polyimides were prepared using 3,3′, 4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride(1), 4,4′-oxydiphthalic anhydride(2), 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (3), 4,4′-sulfonyldiphthalic anhydride(4), and 4,4′-hexafluoroisopropylidene-diphathalic anhydride(5). The fluoro-polyimides exhibited low dielectric constants between 2.46 and 2.98, light color, and excellent high solubility. They exhibited glass transition temperatures between 227 and 253°C, and possessed a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of 60-88 ppm/°C. Polymers PI-2, PI-3, PI-4, PI-5 showed excellent solubility in the organic solvents: N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP), N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), pyridkie and tetrahydrofuran (THF). Inherent viscosity of the polyimides were found to range between 0.58 and 0.72 dLg-1. Thermogravimetric analysis of the polyimides revealed a high thermal stability decomposition temperature in excess of 500°C in nitrogen. Temperature at 10 % weight loss was found to be in the range 506-563°C and 498-557°C in nitrogen and air, respectively. The polyimide films had a tensile strength in the range 75-87 MPa; tensile modulus, 1.5-2.2 GPa; and elongation at break, 6-7%.  相似文献

Blends of an aromatic polyethersulfone (commercial name Victrex) and a polyimide (commercial name Matrimid 5218), the condensation product of 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride and 5(6)-amino-1-(4′-aminophenyl)-1,3,3′-trimethylindane, were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and rheological techniques. The blends appeared to be miscible over the whole range of compositions when cast as films or precipitated from solution in a number of solvents. After annealing above the apparent phase boundary, located above Tg, the blends were irreversibly phase separated indicating that the observed phase boundary does not represent a true state of equilibrium. Only a narrow “processing window” was found for blends containing up to 20 wt % polyimide. Rheological measurements in this range of compositions indicated that blending polyethersulfone with polyimide increases the complex viscosity and the elastic modulus of the blends. For blends containing more than 10 wt % polyimide, abrupt changes in the rheological properties were observed at temperatures above the phase boundary. These changes may be consistent with the formation of a network structure (due to phase separation and/or crosslinking). Blends containing less than 10 wt % polyimide exhibited stable rheological properties after heating at 320°C for 20 min, indicating the existence of thermodynamic equilibrium.  相似文献

Two novel series of aromatic polyimides were prepared from 2,2′‐bis(4‐amino‐3‐trifluoromethylthylphenoxy) biphenyl, 2,2′‐bis(4‐amino‐3‐methoxyphenoxy)biphenyl with 3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 3,3′,4,4′‐diphenylsulfonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (DSDA) via a one‐step procedure. The resulting polymers were fully characterized, and they exhibited excellent organosolubility. These polyimides are thermally stable with 5% weight loss over 430°C, and glass transition temperatures of the polyimides were found to be 225–262°C. Resistive switching devices with the configuration of Al/polymer/indium‐tin oxide were constructed from these polyimides by using conventional solution coating process. Devices with all polyimides exhibited nonvolatile and rewritable flash type memory characteristics with turn‐on voltage at ?1.1 to ?2.8 V. The ON/OFF current ratio of these devices was larger than 104, and the retention times can be as long as 104 s. The theoretical simulation based on the density functional theory suggested that greater distinct charge separation between the ground and charge transfer states led to a highly stable memory behavior. Poly(amic acid)s (PAAs) having the high solution stability and transmittance at 365 nm for photosensitive polyimides have been developed. PAAs with a twisted conformation in the main chains were prepared from 2,2′,6,6′‐biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (2,2′,6,6′‐BPDA) and aromatic diamines. Imidization of PAAs was achieved by chemical treatment using trifluoroacetic anhydride. Among them, the PAA derived from 2,2′,6,6′‐BPDA and 4,4′‐(1,3‐phenylenedioxy)dianiline was converted to the polyimide by thermal treatment. The heating at 300 °C under nitrogen did not complete thermal imidization of PAAs having glass‐transition temperatures (Tg)s higher than 300 °C to the corresponding PIs. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel aromatic polyimides containing bis(phenoxy)naphthalene units were synthesized from 1,5-bis(4-aminophenoxy)naphthalene (APN) and various aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydrides by the usual two-step procedure that included ring-opening polyaddition in a polar solvent such as N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) to give poly(amic acid)s, followed by cyclodehydration to polyimides. The poly(amic acid)s had inherent viscosities between 0.72 and 1.94 dL/g, depending on the tetracarboxylic dianhydrides used. Excepting the polyimide IVb obtained from 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), all other polyimides formed brown, flexible, and tough films by casting from the poly(amic acid) solutions. The polyimide synthesized from BPDA was characterized as semicrystalline, whereas the other polyimides showed amorphous patterns as shown by the x-ray diffraction studies. Tensile strength, initial moduli, and elongation at break of the APN-based polyimide films ranged from 105–135 MPa, 1.92–2.50 GPa, and 6–7%, respectively. These polyimides had glass transition temperatures between 228 and 317°C. Thermal analyses indicated that these polymers were fairly stable, and the 10% weight loss temperatures by TGA were recorded in the range of 543–574°C in nitrogen and 540–566°C in air atmosphere, respectively. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
