Natural convection in an inclined enclosure from below and containing internally heated fluid has been investigated using a finite difference calculation procedure. Results have been obtained for Rayleigh number values up to 106 and for inclination angles of 30 and 60°. For internal Rayleigh numbers that are much larger than the external Rayleigh number, the flow rises in the interior and moves down both the hot and cold walls. On the other hand, if the external Rayleigh number has a larger magnitude, the flow moves upwards along the hot surface and downwards along the cold surface. For the latter situation, the inner core is multicellular in nature at large external Rayleigh numbers. The average heat flux ratio along the cold surface (convective heat flux/corresponding conduction heat flux) increases with increasing external Rayleigh number and decreasing internal ratio is non-monotonic in nature. The heat flux ratio along both surfaces is observed to be strongly dependent on the inclination angle at high external Rayleigh numbers. A maximum in the local heat flux along the cold surface is obtained in the vicinity of x/L = 1 where hot fluid, either from the interior or directly from the opposite hot wall, meets the surface. Along the hot wall, a maximum in the heat flux ra flo  相似文献

This work is focused on the numerical modeling of steady laminar mixed convection flow in a lid-driven inclined square enclosure filled with water–Al2O3 nanofluid. The left and right walls of the enclosure are kept insulated while the bottom and top walls are maintained at constant temperatures with the top surface being the hot wall and moving at a constant speed. The developed equations are given in terms of the stream function–vorticity formulation and are non-dimensionalized and then solved numerically subject to appropriate boundary conditions by a second-order accurate finite-volume method. Comparisons with previously published work are performed and found to be in good agreement. A parametric study is conducted and a set of graphical results is presented and discussed to illustrate the effects of the presence of nanoparticles and enclosure inclination angle on the flow and heat transfer characteristics. It is found that significant heat transfer enhancement can be obtained due to the presence of nanoparticles and that this is accentuated by inclination of the enclosure at moderate and large Richardson numbers.  相似文献

The unsteady conjugate conduction-natural convection in enclosure is of great theoretical significance and is widely encountered in engineering applications in the areas of fluid dynamics and heat transfer. However, there are relatively few efforts to investigate the unsteady flow physics and heat transfer characteristics in the inclined enclosure of finite thickness walls. In the present work, this problem is numerically investigated by a high accuracy multidomain temporal-spatial pseudospectral method. The enclosure is filled with Boussinesq fluid and is bounded by four finite thickness and conductive walls; one of the vertical sidewall is exposed to time-periodic temperature environment while the opposite sidewall holds constant temperature; the top and bottom walls are assumed to be adiabatic. Particular efforts are focused on the effects of three types of influential factors: the wall thermophysical properties, the time-periodic temperature patterns and the inclination, and the time-periodic flow patterns and heat transfer characteristics are presented. Numerical results reveal that within the present parameter range, the heat transfer rate increases almost linearly with the thermal conductivity ratio and thermal diffusivity ratio but decreases with the inclination angle. Moreover, the heat transfer could be enhanced or weakened by selecting different temperature pulsating period in the case of finite thickness wall, while it is always enhanced if the walls are zero thickness. The back heat transfer and heat transfer resonance phenomena are observed, and their relationships with the time-periodic flow patterns and temperature distributions are analyzed. The findings are helpful to the understandings of the fluid flow and heat transfer mechanisms in the related enclosure configurations, and may be of engineering use in thermal design improvement.  相似文献

Numerical computations and experiments were carried out for a buoyant flow of liquid metal (mercury in the experiments) in a long vertical enclosure of square cross-section, in the presence of a uniform horizontal magnetic field. A strong emphasis is put on the case of a magnetic field perpendicular to the applied temperature gradient for two reasons: (1) the MHD damping is smaller than with any other orientation, and (2) the quasi-two-dimensionality of the flow in this case yields a quite efficient velocity measurement technique. The enclosure is heated by a thermally controlled flow of water from one of the vertical walls and cooled by a similar technique from the facing wall. Those two walls are good thermal conductors (thick copper plates in the experiments), whereas the four other walls are thermally insulating. All walls are electrically insulated from the fluid. In this paper, as well as in the companion paper by Tagawa et al. (Eur. J. Mech. B Fluids 21 (4) (2002) 383–398), we model analytically the Hartmann layers present along the walls perpendicular to the magnetic field. This modeling, which yields boundary conditions for the core flow without any meshing of the thin layers, is quite accurate when Hartmann layers are stable. The numerical results are in fairly good agreement with the experimental data. They namely reveal how the heat flux and the fluid flow organization depend on the magnetic field.  相似文献

An experimental study of natural convection in a parallelepipedal enclosure induced by a single vertical wall is described. The upper half of this wall was warm and the lower half cold. The other enclosure walls were insulated. The temperature and flow measurements were performed in the high Rayleigh number regime (1010<Ra<5×1010) by using water as the working fluid. The Rayleigh number was based on the enclosure height and the temperature difference between the warm and the cold part of the driving wall. The flow field featured two flat cells, one filled with warm fluid along the top horizontal wall, and the other filled with cold fluid along the bottom horizontal wall. Each of these cells was surrounded by an additional cell as tall as half the enclosure height. The above flow structure prohibited extensive thermal contact between warm and cold fluid, thus limiting the role of convection on the heat transfer process in the cavity. The findings of this study differ significantly from the findings of previous studies based on the ‘classical’ enclosure model possessing two isothermal vertical walls, the one warm and the other cold, and support the view that the use of ‘more realistic‘ temperature boundary conditions in enclosure natural convection needs careful examination.  相似文献

The transient natural convection in an inclined enclosure filled with water is studied experimentally for the time-periodically-varying wall temperature on one side wall and constant average temperature on the opposing side wall. This system has no temperature difference between the opposing two side walls in time-averaged sense. The temperatures of two opposing walls and the heat flux across the enclosure are measured by a heat flux meter. Based on the experimental results, the effects of time-periodically-varying wall temperature and inclined angles of the enclosure on heat transfer characteristics are studied. The experimental results show that, with the upper wall temperature oscillating, the heat flux across the enclosure is also periodically varied with time, and the net heat flux is from the lower wall to the upper wall. Numerical computations are also conducted and numerical results are qualitatively assured by the experimental measurements.  相似文献

The present work is aimed to study mixed convection heat transfer characteristics for a lid-driven air flow within a square enclosure having a circular body. Flows are driven by the left lid, which slides in its own plane constant velocity. This wall is isothermal and it moves up or down in y direction while the other walls remain stationary. The horizontal walls are adiabatic. The cavity is differentially heated and the left wall is maintained at a higher temperature than the right wall. Three different temperature boundary conditions were applied for the inner cylinder as adiabatic, isothermal or conductive. The computation is carried out for wide ranges of Richardson numbers, diameter of inner cylinder and center and location of the inner cylinder. It was found that the most effective parameter on flow field and temperature distribution is the orientation of the moving lid. The circular body can be a control parameter for heat and fluid flow. An interesting obtained result that the thermal conductivity becomes insignificant for small values of diameter of the circular body.  相似文献

This paper discusses the results of a study related to natural convection cooling of a heat source located on the bottom wall of an inclined isosceles triangular enclosure filled with a Cu water-nanofluid. The right and left walls of the enclosure are both maintained cold at constant equal temperatures, while the remaining parts of the bottom wall are insulated. The study has been carried out for a Rayleigh number in the range 104 ≤ Ra ≤ 106, for a heat source length in the range 0.2 ≤ ε ≤0.8, for a solid volume fraction in the range 0 ≤ ?≤0.06 and for an inclination angle in the range 0° ≤ δ≤45°. Results are presented in the form of streamline contours, isotherms, maximum temperature at the heat source surface and average Nusselt number. It is noticed that the addition of Cu nanoparticles enhances the heat transfer rate and therefore cooling effectiveness for all values of Rayleigh number, especially at low values of Ra. The effect of the inclination angle becomes more noticeable as one increases the value of Ra. For high Rayleigh numbers, a critical value for the inclination angle of δ = 15° is found for which the heat source maximum temperature is highest.  相似文献

The natural convection heat transfer of air in a porous media can be controlled by gradient magnetic field. Thermomagnetic convection of air in a porous cubic enclosure with an electric coil inclined around the $Y$ axis was numerically investigated. The Biot–Savart law was used to calculate the magnetic field. The governing equations in primitive variables were discretized by the finite-volume method and solved by the SIMPLE algorithm. The flow and temperature fields for the air natural convection were presented and the mean Nusselt number on the hot wall was calculated and compared. The results show that both the magnetic force and coil inclination have significant effect on the flow field and heat transfer in a porous cubic enclosure, the natural convection heat transfer of air can be enhanced or controlled by applying gradient magnetic field.  相似文献

We consider unsteady laminar natural convection flow of water subject to density inversion in a rectangular cavity formed by isothermal vertical walls with internal heat generation. The top and bottom horizontal walls are considered to be adiabatic, whereas the temperature of the left vertical wall is assumed to be greater than that of the right vertical wall. The equations are non-dimensionalized and are solved numerically by an upwind finite difference method together with a successive over-relaxation (SOR) technique. The effects of both heat generation and variations in the aspect ratio on the streamlines, isotherms and the rate of heat transfer from the walls of the enclosure are presented. Investigations are performed for water taking Prandtl number to be Pr=11.58 and the Rayleigh number to be Ra=105.  相似文献

The main objective of this article is to study the effect of magnetic field on the combined buoyancy and surface tension driven convection in a cylindrical annular enclosure. In this study, the top surface of the annulus is assumed to be free, and the bottom wall is insulated, whereas the inner and the outer cylindrical walls are kept at hot and cold temperatures respectively. The governing equations of the flow system are numerically solved using an implicit finite difference technique. The numerical results for various governing parameters of the problem are discussed in terms of the streamlines, isotherms, Nusselt number and velocity profiles in the annuli. Our results reveal that, in tall cavities, the axial magnetic field suppresses the surface tension flow more effectively than the radial magnetic field, whereas, the radial magnetic field is found to be better for suppressing the buoyancy driven flow compared to axial magnetic field. However, the axial magnetic field is found to be effective in suppressing both the flows in shallow cavities. From the results, we also found that the surface tension effect is predominant in shallow cavities compared to the square and tall annulus. Further, the heat transfer rate increases with radii ratio, but decreases with the Hartmann number.  相似文献

The main objective of this article is to study the effect of discrete heating on free convection heat transfer in a rectangular porous enclosure containing a heat-generating substance. The left wall of the enclosure has two discrete heat sources and the right wall is isothermally cooled at a lower temperature. The top and bottom walls, and the unheated portions of the left wall are adiabatic. The vorticity–stream function formulation of the governing equations is numerically solved using an implicit finite difference method. The effects of aspect ratio, Darcy number, heat source length, and modified Rayleigh number on the flow and heat transfer are analyzed. The numerical results reveal that the rate of heat transfer increases as the modified Rayleigh number and the Darcy number increases, but decreases on increasing the aspect ratio. The average heat transfer rate is found to be higher at the bottom heater than at the top heater in almost all considered parameter cases except for ε = 0.5. Also, the maximum temperature takes place generally at the top heater except for the case ε = 0.5, where the maximum temperature is found at the bottom heater. Further, the numerical results reveal that the maximum temperature decreases with the modified Rayleigh number and increases with the aspect ratio.  相似文献

In this study, the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) natural convection heat transfer with Joule and viscous heating effects inside an iso-flux porous medium-filled inclined rectangular enclosure is studied numerically. An iso-heat flux is applied for heating and cooling the two opposing walls of the enclosure while the other walls are adiabatic. The Forchheimer extension of Darcy-Oberbeck-Boussinesq and energy equations is transformed into a dimensionless form using a set of suitable variables instead of a finite difference scheme. The governing parameters are the magnetic influence number, the modified Rayleigh number, the inclination angle, and the aspect ratio of the enclosure. The results show that viscous and Joule heating effects decrease heat transfer rates.  相似文献

Hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics of flow boiling in a non-uniformly heated microchannel were studied. Experiments were performed with a single microchannel and a series of microheaters to study the microscale boiling of water under axially non-uniform heat input conditions. A simultaneous real time visualization of the flow pattern was performed with the measurement of experimental parameters. Tests were performed over a mass flux of 309.8 kg/m2 s, and heat flux of 200–600 kW/m2. Test results showed different fluctuations of heated wall temperature, pressure drop, and mass flux with variations of the heat input along the flow direction. The unique periodic flow boiling in a single microchannel was observed at all heat flux conditions except for the increasing heat input distribution case which is the nearly uniform effective heat input distribution condition. The instability is correlated with flow pattern transition. For the nearly uniform effective heating condition, no fluctuation of the wall temperature, pressure drop, or mass flux was observed. We can relieve the instability by increasing total heat input along the flow direction and predict the instability using the transition criteria and flow pattern map.  相似文献

In this paper, the melting process of a PCM inside an inclined compound enclosure partially filled with a porous medium is theoretically addressed using a novel deformed mesh method. The sub-domain area of the compound enclosure is made of a porous layer and clear region. The right wall of the enclosure is adjacent to the clear region and is subject to a constant temperature of Tc. The left wall, which is connected to the porous layer, is thick and thermally conductive. The thick wall is partially subject to the hot temperature of Th. The remaining borders of the enclosure are well insulated. The governing equations for flow and heat transfer, including the phase change effects and conjugate heat transfer at the thick wall, are introduced and transformed into a non-dimensional form. A deformed grid method is utilized to track the phase change front in the solid and liquid regions. The melting front movement is controlled by the Stefan condition. The finite element method, along with Arbitrary Eulerian–Lagrangian (ALE) moving grid technique, is employed to solve the non-dimensional governing equations. The modeling approach and the accuracy of the utilized numerical approach are verified by comparison of the results with several experimental and numerical studies, available in the literature. The effect of conjugate wall thickness, inclination angle, and the porous layer thickness on the phase change heat transfer of PCM is investigated. The outcomes show that the rates of melting and heat transfer are enhanced as the thickness of the porous layer increases. The melting rate is the highest when the inclination angle of the enclosure is 45°. An increase in the wall thickness improves the melting rate.

The problem of steady, laminar, natural convective flow of a viscous fluid in an inclined enclosure with partitions is considered. Transverse gradient of temperature is applied on the two opposing regular walls of the inclined enclosure while the other walls are maintained adiabatic. The problem is formulated in terms of the vorticity-stream function procedure. A numerical solution based on the finite volume method is obtained. Representative results illustrating the effects of the enclosure inclination angle and the degree of irregularity on the contour maps of the streamlines and temperature are reported and discussed. In addition, results for the average Nusselt number at the heated wall of the enclosure and the difference of extreme stream-function values are presented and discussed for various Rayleigh numbers, inclination angles and dimensionless partition heights.  相似文献

Numerical predictions of transient flow and thermal fields in a rectangular enclosure with two periodically moving vertical walls are presented. The combined influence of the movement of the walls and the buoyancy as well on the flow pattern and heat transfer performance is evaluated. The compressible‐flow model is adopted, and governing equations are expressed in integral form and discretized on the moving grids, which deform in resonance with the walls to accommodate the variation in the volume of the enclosure. A two‐stage pressure‐correction scheme is applied for simultaneously determining the distributions of absolute pressure, density, temperature, and velocity of the compressible flow field in the enclosure during the periodically stable periods. Effects of the frequency, stroke, and the phase angle of the wall oscillations on the flow are of major concerns in this study. The frequency is ranged between 5 and 25 Hz and the dimensionless strokes (l/H) of the wall are varied from 0.4 to 1.0. Results for Nusselt numbers on the walls as well as the dimensionless input work required to excite the wall oscillation are provided. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental and numerical investigation on the natural convection flow and heat transfer in an enclosure with a single-hole baffle at the median height. The temperature in the fluid is quantified by means of temperature sensitive thermo-chromic liquid crystal (TLC) particles. The fluid flow velocity is measured non-intrusively with a full field particle tracking technique. The three-dimensional numerical model, developed and validated with experimental data, provides a computational tool for further investigation of mass and energy transport through the baffle openings in these types of enclosures. The experimentally visualized and numerically simulated flow structures show a pair of streams across the baffle-hole. The two chambers communicate through this pair of streams which carry the fluid exchange and heat transfer between the two chambers. At the baffle opening, the two streams are aligned in a diagonal direction across of the enclosure. The streams are accelerated and form jet-like flows that drive the whole circulation in the chambers. The jet-like flows leave the baffle opening, approach the vertical centerline of the cavity, and finally impinge on the top/bottom walls.  相似文献

The coupled streamfuction–temperature equations governing the Darcian flow and convection process in a fluid-saturated porous enclosure with an isothermal sinusoidal bottom sun face, has been numerically analyzed using a finite element method (FEM). No restrictions have been imposed on the geometrical non-linearity arising from the parameters like wave amplitude (a), number of waves per unit length (N), wave phase (Φ), aspect ratio (A) and also on the flow driving parameter Rayleigh number (Ra). The numerical simulations for varying values of Ra bring about interesting flow features, like the transformation of a unicellular flow to a multicellular flow. Both with increasing amplitude and increasing number of waves per unit length, owing to the shift in the separation and reattachment points, a row–column pattern of multicellular flow transforms to a simple row of multicellular flow. A cycle of n celluar and n+1 cellular flows, with the flow in adjacent cells in the opposite direction, periodically manifest with phase varying between 0 and 360°. The global heat transfer into the system has been found to decrease with increasing amplitude and increasing number of waves per unit length. Only marginal changes in the global heat flux are observed, either with increasing Ra or varying Φ. Effectively, sinusoidal bottom surface undulations of the isothermal wall of a porous enclosure reduces the heat transfer into the system. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
