A granular clock is observed in a vertically vibrated compartmentalized granular gas composed of two types of grains with the same size. The dynamics of the clock is studied in terms of an unstable evaporation or condensation model for the granular gas. In this model, the temperatures of the two types of grains are considered to be different, and they are functions of the composition of the gas. Oscillations in the system are driven by the asymmetric collisions properties between the two types of grains. Both our experiments and model show that the transition of the system from a homogeneous state to an oscillatory state is via a Hopf bifurcation.  相似文献

When a granular layer is submitted to an oscillating acceleration with a peak value larger than gravity, a large scale motion develops. This movement is in some ways similar to the one displayed by a liquid heated from below, and it is called granular convection. Different conditions beside the parameters of the forcing can affect it, such as the presence of an interstitial gas or the roughness of the walls. We have carried out an experiment to study the convective movement of a granular layer with a temporal resolution high enough to describe the motion of individual grains within one oscillating period. We also present experimental results concerning the friction that the lateral walls exert on the grains and its relevance on granular convection.  相似文献

The theory of steady state motion of grain boundary sytems with triple junctions and the main features of such systems are considered. A special technique of in-situ observations and recording of triple junction motion is introduced, and the results of experimental measurements on Zn tricrystals are discussed. It is shown, in particular, that the described method makes it possible to measure the triple junction mobility. It was found that the measured shape of a moving half-loop with a triple junction agrees with theoretical predictions. A transition from triple junction kinetics to grain boundary kinetics was observed. This means that triple junctions can drag boundary motion. It is demonstrated that the microstructural (granular) evolution is slowed down by triple junction drag for any n-sided grain. The second consequence pertains to six-sided grains. For a boundary system with dragging triple junctions there is no unique dividing line between vanishing and growing grains with respect to their topological class anymore, like n = 6 in the Von Neumann-Mullins relation.  相似文献

We present an experimental study of the movement of individual particles in a layer of vertically shaken granular material. High-speed imaging allows us to investigate the motion of beads within one vibration period. This motion consists mainly of vertical jumps, and a global ordered drift. The analysis of the system movement as a whole reveals that the observed bifurcation in the flight time is not adequately described by the Inelastic Bouncing Ball Model. Near the bifurcation point, friction plays an important role, and the branches of the bifurcation do not diverge as the control parameter is increased. By fitting the grains trajectories near the wall it is possible to quantify the effective acceleration acting on them. A comparison of the mass centre flying time and the flying time determined for the grains near the wall exposes the underlying mechanism that causes the downward flow.  相似文献

A second order phase transition is observed for the homogeneous cooling state of a heavy impurity particle in a granular fluid. The order parameter straight phi is the ratio of impurity mean square velocity to that of the fluid, with a conjugate field h proportional to the mass ratio. A parameter beta, measuring the fluid cooling rate relative to the impurity-fluid collision rate, is the analog of the inverse temperature. For beta<1 the fluid is "normal" with straight phi = 0 at h = 0, as in the case of elastic collisions. For beta>1 an "ordered" state with straight phi not equal0 occurs at h = 0, representing an extreme breakdown of equipartition. Critical slowing and qualitative changes in the velocity distribution function near the transition are noted.  相似文献

In this study, computer simulations are performed on three-dimensional granular systems under shear conditions. The system comprises granular particles that are confined between two rigid plates. The top plate is subjected to a normal force and driven by a shearing velocity. A positive shear-rate dependence of granular friction, known as velocity-strengthening, exists between the granular and shearing plate. To understand the origin of the dependence of frictional sliding, we treat the granular system as a complex network, where granular particles are nodes and normal contact forces are weighted edges used to obtain insight into the interiors of granular matter. Community structures within granular property networks are detected under different shearing velocities in the steady state. Community parameters, such as the size of the largest cluster and average size of clusters, show significant monotonous trends in shearing velocity associated with the shear-rate dependence of granular friction. Then, we apply an instantaneous change in shearing velocity. A dramatic increase in friction is observed with a change in shearing velocity in the non-steady state. The community structures in the non-steady state are different from those in the steady state. Results indicate that the largest cluster is a key factor affecting the friction between the granular and shearing plate.  相似文献

A method is proposed to deduce the shell correction energy corresponding to the fission transition state shape of nuclei in the mass region around 200, from an analysis of the first chance fission values of the ratio of fission to neutron widths, (Γ f n )1. The method is applied to the typical case of the fissioning nucleus212Po, formed by alpha bombardment of208Pb. For the calculation of the neutron width, the level densities of the daughter nucleus after neutron emission were obtained from a numerical calculation starting from shell model single particle energy level scheme. It is shown that with the use of standard Fermi gas expression for the level densities of the fission transition state nucleus in the calculation of the fission width, an apparent energy dependence of the fission barrier height is required to fit the experimental data. This energy dependence, which arises from the excitation energy dependence of shell effects on level densities, can be used to deduce the shell correction energy at the fission transition state point. It is found that in the case of212Po, the energy of the actual transition state point is higher than the energy of the liquid drop model (LDM) saddle point by (3 ± 1) MeV, implying significant positive shell correction energy at the fission transition state. Further, the liquid drop model value of level density parametera is found to be a few per cent smaller for the saddle point shape as compared to its spherical shape.  相似文献

Parametrically driven systems sustaining sech solitons are shown to support a new kind of localized state. These structures are walls connecting two regions oscillating in antiphase that form in the parameter domain where the sech soliton is unstable. Depending on the parameter set the oppositely phased domains can be either spatially uniform or patterned. Both chiral (Bloch) and nonchiral (Ising) walls are found, which bifurcate one into the other via an Ising-Bloch transition. While Ising walls are at rest Bloch walls move and may display secondary bifurcations leading to chaotic wall motion.  相似文献

The rheology of granular materials near an interface is investigated through proton magnetic resonance imaging. A new cylinder shear apparatus has been inserted in the magnetic resonance imaging device, which allows the control of the radial confining pressure exerted by the outer wall on the grains and the measurement of the torque on the inner shearing cylinder. A multi-layer velocimetry sequence has been developed for the simultaneous measurement of velocity profiles in different sample zones, while the measurement of the solid fraction profile is based on static imaging of the sample. This study describes the influence of the roughness of the shearing interface and of the transverse confining walls on the granular interface rheology.  相似文献

We propose a simple continuum model to interpret the shearing motion of dense, dry and cohesion-less granular media. Compressibility, dilatancy and Coulomb-like friction are the three basic ingredients. The granular stress is split into a rate-dependent part representing the rebound-less impacts between grains and a rate-independent part associated with long-lived contacts. Because we consider stationary flows only, the grain compaction and the grain velocity are the two main variables. The predicted velocity and compaction profiles are in apparent qualitative agreement with most of the experimental or numerical results concerning free-surface shear flows as well as confined shear flows.Received: 24 March 2004, Published online: 29 June 2004PACS: 45.70.Ht Avalanches - 45.70.-n Granular systems - 83.80.Fg Granular solids  相似文献

We consider an ensemble of grains that interact through a dipole-dipole interaction. A granular gas is formed by the vertical motion of a piston at the bottom boundary of the system. The interaction between the grains is controlled by an horizontally applied magnetic field. When the speed of the piston is decreased, we observe a transition from a low density to a high density phase. When the interaction between grains is weak, the transition is continuous. It is discontinuous for stronger interaction. The phase diagram displays strong similarities with the ones observed for usual equilibrium phase transitions.  相似文献

In order to study analytically the nature of the size segregation in granular mixtures, we introduce a mean field theory in the framework of a statistical mechanics approach, based on Edwards' original ideas. For simplicity we apply the theory to a lattice model for a hard sphere binary mixture under gravity, and we find a new purely thermodynamic mechanism that gives rise to the size segregation phenomenon. By varying the number of small grains and the mass ratio, we find a crossover from the Brazil nut to the reverse Brazil nut effect, which becomes a true phase transition when the number of small grains is larger then a critical value. We suggest that this transition is induced by the effective attraction between large grains due to the presence of small ones (depletion force). Finally the theoretical results are confirmed by numerical simulations of the 3d system under taps.  相似文献

Recent theoretical results are highlighted that illustrate some of the interesting phenomena associated with magnetic domain boundary walls. Two problems will be discussed: dynamics associated with domain wall propagation, and effects related to spin transport through domain walls. For the first problem, an example of wall interaction and motion through a random potential will be discussed with reference to the general problem of roughening transitions. Images of domain dynamics in thin films of ion irradiated Co reveal a de-roughening transition associated with long range magnetostatic interactions between pairs of domain walls. A scaling theory of this transition is described in which a curious type of dynamic hysteresis can occur. For the second problem, results from calculations of ballistic charge and spin transport through domain boundary walls are discussed in terms of an effective circuit model.  相似文献

The radial segregation phenomena of a mixture of two different size grains in a horizontal rotating drum are studied by DEM simulations. The grano-dynamics of radial segregation phenomena is examined as a function of the axial length and the friction between grains and not-rotating end-plates of the drum. The results indicate that, in the longer drums, the radial segregation ratio is higher and the friction on the end-plates shows little effect. Whereas in the shorter drums, the radial segregation is very slow or negligible; however, decreasing the friction on non-rotating end-plates increases the segregation ratio. If we increase the friction further (greater than the frictions between the grain-grain and the grains and the inner wall), the segregation ratio drops in the longer drums while in the shorter drums mixing is seen instead. The cause of these phenomena lies in the mechanism of diffusion in granular flows due to shearing strain by the end-plates. For more roughened end-plates, this shearing activity increases the granular temperature of the system and only the mixing can be observed instead of the segregation.

In order to study the effect of curvature energy on the thermodynamic driving force (TDF) of nuclear fission, the potential and entropy barrier of 200Pb and 224Th systems are calculated by using the truncated droplet model including curvature energy, respectively. Compared with the liquid drop model, the results show that curvature energy does not affect the saddle point of 224Th, but pushes the saddle point of 200Pb backwards the ground state. The stronger the deformation dependence of the level density parameter is, the closer the saddle point of entropy barrier for these systems is to the ground state. In order to further investigate how curvature energy affects TDF through nuclear potential and entropy, respectively, the prescission neutron multiplicity (PNM) is selected as the probe, some simulations based on two schemes are carried out. The results show that curvature energy reduces the potential driving force of 200Pb and 224Th, and enhances the entropy potential driving force. Combined with the calculations and analyses of PNM, the former effect is more obvious than the latter, so curvature energy weakens TDF of two systems on whole, thus delaying the nuclear fission process of two systems.  相似文献

Dense slowly evolving or static granular materials exhibit strong force fluctuations even though the spatial disorder of the grains is relatively weak. Typically, forces are carried preferentially along a network of "force chains." These consist of linearly aligned grains with larger-than-average force. A growing body of work has explored the nature of these fluctuations. We first briefly review recent work concerning stress fluctuations. We then focus on a series of experiments in both two- and three-dimension [(2D) and (3D)] to characterize force fluctuations in slowly sheared systems. Both sets of experiments show strong temporal fluctuations in the local stress/force; the length scales of these fluctuations extend up to 10(2) grains. In 2D, we use photoelastic disks that permit visualization of the internal force structure. From this we can make comparisons to recent models and calculations that predict the distributions of forces. Typically, these models indicate that the distributions should fall off exponentially at large force. We find in the experiments that the force distributions change systematically as we change the mean packing fraction, gamma. For gamma's typical of dense packings of nondeformable grains, we see distributions that are consistent with an exponential decrease at large forces. For both lower and higher gamma, the observed force distributions appear to differ from this prediction, with a more Gaussian distribution at larger gamma and perhaps a power law at lower gamma. For high gamma, the distributions differ from this prediction because the grains begin to deform, allowing more grains to carry the applied force, and causing the distributions to have a local maximum at nonzero force. It is less clear why the distributions differ from the models at lower gamma. An exploration in gamma has led to the discovery of an interesting continuous or "critical" transition (the strengthening/softening transition) in which the mean stress is the order parameter, and the mean packing fraction, gamma, must be adjusted to a value gamma(c) to reach the "critical point." We also follow the motion of individual disks and obtain detailed statistical information on the kinematics, including velocities and particle rotations or spin. Distributions for the azimuthal velocity, V(theta), and spin, S, of the particles are nearly rate invariant, which is consistent with conventional wisdom. Near gamma(c), the grain motion becomes intermittent causing the mean velocity of grains to slow down. Also, the length of stress chains grows as gamma-->gamma(c). The 3D experiments show statistical rate invariance for the stress in the sense that when the power spectra and spectral frequencies of the stress time series are appropriately scaled by the shear rate, Omega, all spectra collapse onto a single curve for given particle and sample sizes. The frequency dependence of the spectra can be characterized by two different power laws, P proportional, variant omega(-alpha), in the high and low frequency regimes: alpha approximately 2 at high omega; alpha<2 at low omega. The force distributions computed from the 3D stress time series are at least qualitatively consistent with exponential fall-off at large stresses. (c) 1999 American Institute of Physics.  相似文献

The correlation length and the effect of fluctuations of the grains are calculated for weakly coupled granular superconductors, using a two order parameter Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson functional. The main effect of fluctuations is shown to be a shift of the coherent transition temperature, and the correlation length is compared to the corresponding expression in strongly coupled granular superconductors.  相似文献

Systems with long-range interactions can reach a Quasi Stationary State (QSS) as a result of a violent collisionless relaxation. If the system mixes well (ergodicity), the QSS can be predicted by the statistical theory of Lynden-Bell (1967) based on the Vlasov equation. When the initial condition takes only two values, the Lynden-Bell distribution is similar to the Fermi-Dirac statistics. Such distributions have recently been observed in direct numerical simulations of the HMF model (Antoniazzi et al. 2006). In this paper, we determine the caloric curve corresponding to the Lynden-Bell statistics in relation with the HMF model and analyze the dynamical and thermodynamical stability of spatially homogeneous solutions by using two general criteria previously introduced in the literature. We express the critical energy and the critical temperature as a function of a degeneracy parameter fixed by the initial condition. Below these critical values, the homogeneous Lynden-Bell distribution is not a maximum entropy state but an unstable saddle point. Known stability criteria corresponding to the Maxwellian distribution and the water-bag distribution are recovered as particular limits of our study. In addition, we find a critical point below which the homogeneous Lynden-Bell distribution is always stable. We apply these results to the situation considered in Antoniazzi et al. For a given energy, we find a critical initial magnetization above which the homogeneous Lynden-Bell distribution ceases to be a maximum entropy state. For an energy U=0.69, this transition occurs above an initial magnetization Mx=0.897. In that case, the system should reach an inhomogeneous Lynden-Bell distribution (most mixed) or an incompletely mixed state (possibly fitted by a Tsallis distribution). Thus, our theoretical study proves that the dynamics is different for small and large initial magnetizations, in agreement with numerical results of Pluchino et al. (2004). This new dynamical phase transition may reconcile the two communities by showing that they study different regimes.  相似文献

The fission barrier for ^240pu is investigated beyond the second saddle point in the potentiM energy surface by the constrained relativistic mean field method with the newly proposed parameter set PK1. The microscopic correction for the centre-of-mass motion is essentiM to provide the correct potential energy surface. The shell effects that stabilize the nuclei against the fission is also investigated by the Strutinsky method. The shapes for the ground state, fission isomer and saddle-points, etc, are studied in detail.  相似文献
