The present study is intended to study heat and mass transfer in a vertical annular cylinder embedded with saturated porous medium. The inner surface of cylinder is maintained at uniform wall temperature and uniform wall concentration. The governing partial differential equations are non-dimensionalised and solved by using finite element method (FEM). The porous medium is discritised using triangular elements with uneven element size. Large number of smaller-sized elements are placed near the walls of the annulus to capture the smallest variation in solution parameters. The results are reported for both aiding and opposing flows. The effects of various non-dimensional numbers such as buoyancy ratio, Lewis number, Rayleigh number, aspect ratio, etc on heat and mass transfer are discussed. The temperature and concentration profiles are presented.  相似文献

A space–time finite element method for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in a bounded domain in ?d (with d=2 or 3) is presented. The method is based on the time‐discontinuous Galerkin method with the use of simplex‐type meshes together with the requirement that the space–time finite element discretization for the velocity and the pressure satisfy the inf–sup stability condition of Brezzi and Babu?ka. The finite element discretization for the pressure consists of piecewise linear functions, while piecewise linear functions enriched with a bubble function are used for the velocity. The stability proof and numerical results for some two‐dimensional problems are presented. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The present work contributes to the numerical modeling of complex turbulent multiphasic fluid flows occurring in estuarine channels. This research finds its motivation in the increasing need for efficient management of estuaries by taking into account the complex turbulent stratified flows encountered in estuaries and costal zones. A time‐dependent, 3D finite element model of suspended sediment transport taking into account the effects of cohesiveness between sediments is presented. The model estuary is the forced time‐dependent winds, time elevation at open boundaries and river discharge. To cope with the stiffness problems a decoupling method is employed to solve the shallow‐water equations of mass conservation, momentum and suspended sediment transport with the conventional hydrostatic pressure. The decoupling method partitions a time step into three subcycles according to the physical phenomena. In the first sub‐cycle the pure hydrodynamics including the k–ε turbulence model is solved, followed by the advection–diffusion equations for pollutants (salinity, temperature, suspended sediment concentration, (SSC)), and finally the bed evolution is solved. The model uses a mass‐preserving method based on the so‐called Raviart–Thomas finite element on the unstructured mesh in the horizontal plane, while the multi‐layers system is adopted in vertical with the conventional conforming finite element method, with the advantage that the lowermost and uppermost layers of variable height allow a faithful representation of the time‐varying bed and free surface, respectively. The model has been applied to investigate the SSC and seabed evolution in Po River Estuary (PRE) in Italy. The computed results mimic the field data well. In this paper, we study an interface transport scheme of a two‐phase flow of an incompressible viscous immiscible fluid. The problem is discretized by the characteristics method in time and finite elements method in space. The interface is captured by the level set function. Appropriate boundary conditions for the problem of mold filling are investigated, a new natural boundary condition under pressure effect for the transport equation is proposed, and an algorithm for computing the solution is presented. Finally, numerical experiments show and validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A robust aspect ratio‐based agglomeration algorithm to generate high quality of coarse grids for unstructured and hybrid grids is proposed in this paper. The algorithm focuses on multigrid techniques for the numerical solution of Euler and Navier–Stokes equations, which conform to cell‐centered finite volume special discretization scheme, combines vertex‐based isotropic agglomeration and cell‐based directional agglomeration to yield large increases in convergence rates. Aspect ratio is used as fusing weight to capture the degree of cell convexity and give an indication of cell stretching. Agglomeration front queue is established to propagate inward from the boundaries, which stores isotropic vertex and also high‐stretched cell marked with different flag according to aspect ratio. We conduct the present method to solve Euler and Navier–Stokes equations on unstructured and hybrid grids and compare the results with single grid as well as MGridGen, which shows that the present method is efficient in reducing computational time for large‐scale system equations. In complex applications, such as the analysis of hydraulic performance of blood pumps (ventricular assist devices), the Navier–Stokes equations have to be discretized on very anisotropic meshes. If stabilized finite element formulations are applied, standard definitions of the stabilization parameter are usually not appropriate to handle elements with a high aspect ratio. If, in addition, rotating objects, moving meshes, or turbulence has to be considered in the simulation, further modifications of the stabilization procedure have to be applied. In this paper, we present stabilized space‐time finite element formulations of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations that show very good convergence properties on complex anisotropic meshes and lead to reasonable numerical accuracy in complex flows when compared with experimental data. A new finite element method is presented for the solution of two-dimensional transport problems. The method is based on a weighted residual formulation in which the method of characteristics is combined with the finite element method. This is achieved by orienting sides of the space-time elements joining the nodes at subsequent time levels along the characteristics of the pure advection equation associated with the transport problem. The method is capable of solving numerically the advection--diffusion equation without generating oscillations or numerical diffusion for the whole spectrum of dispersion from diffusion only through mixed dispersion to pure convection. The utility and accuracy of the method are demonstrated by a number of examples in two space dimensions and a comparison of the numerical results with the exact solution is presented in one case. A very favourable feature of the method is the capability of solving accurately advection dominated transport problems with very large time steps for which the Courant number is well over one.  相似文献

A semi‐implicit scheme is presented for large eddy simulation of turbulent reactive flow and combustion in reciprocating piston engines. First, the governing equations in a deforming coordinate system are formulated to accommodate the moving piston. The numerical scheme is made up of a fourth‐order central difference for the diffusion terms in the transport equations and a fifth‐order weighted essentially nonoscillatory (WENO) scheme for the convective terms. A second‐ order Adams–Bashforth scheme is used for time integration. For higher density ratios, it is combined with a predictor–corrector scheme. The numerical scheme is explicit for time integration of the transport equations, except for the continuity equation which is used together with the momentum equation to determine the pressure field and velocity field by using a Poisson equation for the pressure correction field. The scheme is aimed at the simulation of low Mach number flows typically found in piston engines. An efficient multigrid method that can handle high grid aspect ratio is presented for solving the pressure correction equation. The numerical scheme is evaluated on two test engines, a laboratory four‐stroke engine with rectangular‐shaped engine geometry where detailed velocity measurements are available, and a modified truck engine with practical cylinder geometry where lean ethanol/air mixture is combusted under a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) condition. The analysis and improvement of an immersed boundary method (IBM) for simulating turbulent flows over complex geometries are presented. Direct forcing is employed. It consists in interpolating boundary conditions from the solid body to the Cartesian mesh on which the computation is performed. Lagrange and least squares high‐order interpolations are considered. The direct forcing IBM is implemented in an incompressible finite volume Navier–Stokes solver for direct numerical simulations (DNS) and large eddy simulations (LES) on staggered grids. An algorithm to identify the body and construct the interpolation schemes for arbitrarily complex geometries consisting of triangular elements is presented. A matrix stability analysis of both interpolation schemes demonstrates the superiority of least squares interpolation over Lagrange interpolation in terms of stability. Preservation of time and space accuracy of the original solver is proven with the laminar two‐dimensional Taylor–Couette flow. Finally, practicability of the method for simulating complex flows is demonstrated with the computation of the fully turbulent three‐dimensional flow in an air‐conditioning exhaust pipe. In a previous paper, the authors presented an elemental enriched space to be used in a finite‐element framework (EFEM) capable of reproducing kinks and jumps in an unknown function using a fixed mesh in which the jumps and kinks do not coincide with the interelement boundaries. In this previous publication, only scalar transport problems were solved (thermal problems). In the present work, these ideas are generalized to vectorial unknowns, in particular, the incompressible Navier‐Stokes equations for multifluid flows presenting internal moving interfaces. The advantage of the EFEM compared with global enrichment is the significant reduction in computing time when the internal interface is moving. In the EFEM, the matrix to be solved at each time step has not only the same amount of degrees of freedom (DOFs) but also the same connectivity between the DOFs. This frozen matrix graph enormously improves the efficiency of the solver. Another characteristic of the elemental enriched space presented here is that it allows a linear variation of the jump, thus improving the convergence rate, compared with other enriched spaces that have a constant variation of the jump. Furthermore, the implementation in any existing finite‐element code is extremely easy with the version presented here because the new shape functions are based on the usual finite‐element method shape functions for triangles or tetrahedrals, and once the internal DOFs are statically condensed, the resulting elements have exactly the same number of unknowns as the nonenriched finite elements.  相似文献

This work presents a two‐grid stabilized method of equal‐order finite elements for the Stokes problems. This method only offsets the discrete pressure space by the residual of pressure on two grids to circumvent the discrete Babu?ka–Brezzi condition. The method can be done locally in a two‐grid approach without stabilization parameter by projecting the pressure onto a finite element space based on coarse mesh. Also, it leads to a linear system with minimal additional cost in implement. Optimal error estimates are obtained. Finally, some numerical simulations are presented to show stability and accuracy properties of the method. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A numerical scheme for the simulation of blood flow and transport processes in large arteries is presented. Blood flow is described by the unsteady 3D incompressible Navier–Stokes equations for Newtonian fluids; solute transport is modelled by the advection–diffusion equation. The resistance of the arterial wall to transmural transport is described by a shear-dependent wall permeability model. The finite element formulation of the Navier–Stokes equations is based on an operator-splitting method and implicit time discretization. The streamline upwind/Petrov–Galerkin (SUPG) method is applied for stabilization of the advective terms in the transport equation and in the flow equations. A numerical simulation is carried out for pulsatile mass transport in a 3D arterial bend to demonstrate the influence of arterial flow patterns on wall permeability characteristics and transmural mass transfer. The main result is a substantial wall flux reduction at the inner side of the curved region. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A variational multiscale method for computations of incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in time‐dependent domains is presented. The proposed scheme is a three‐scale variational multiscale method with a projection‐based scale separation that uses an additional tensor valued space for the large scales. The resolved large and small scales are computed in a coupled way with the effects of unresolved scales confined to the resolved small scales. In particular, the Smagorinsky eddy viscosity model is used to model the effects of unresolved scales. The deforming domain is handled by the arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian approach and by using an elastic mesh update technique with a mesh‐dependent stiffness. Further, the choice of orthogonal finite element basis function for the resolved large scale leads to a computationally efficient scheme. Simulations of flow around a static beam attached to a square base, around an oscillating beam and around a plunging aerofoil are presented. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A numerical scheme for time‐dependent incompressible viscous fluid flow, thermally coupled under the Boussinesq approximation is presented. The scheme combines an operator splitting in the time discretization and linear finite elements in the space discretization, and is an extension of one previously applied for isothermal incompressible viscous flow governed by the Navier–Stokes equations. To show the efficiency of the scheme, numerical results are presented for mixed convection, and natural convection at high Rayleigh numbers. Restricting the scheme to the isothermal case, some numerical results at high Reynolds numbers are included, i.e. the scheme is tested for a small viscosity and a large force term, which are not trivial tasks to deal with. A finite difference method is presented for solving the 3D Navier–Stokes equations in vorticity–velocity form. The method involves solving the vorticity transport equations in ‘curl‐form’ along with a set of Cauchy–Riemann type equations for the velocity. The equations are formulated in cylindrical co‐ordinates and discretized using a staggered grid arrangement. The discretized Cauchy–Riemann type equations are overdetermined and their solution is accomplished by employing a conjugate gradient method on the normal equations. The vorticity transport equations are solved in time using a semi‐implicit Crank–Nicolson/Adams–Bashforth scheme combined with a second‐order accurate spatial discretization scheme. Special emphasis is put on the treatment of the polar singularity. Numerical results of axisymmetric as well as non‐axisymmetric flows in a pipe and in a closed cylinder are presented. Comparison with measurements are carried out for the axisymmetric flow cases. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This is an analytical study on the time development of hydrodynamic dispersion of an inert species in electroosmotic flow through a rectangular channel. The objective is to determine how the channel side walls may affectthe dispersion coefficient at different instants of time.Tothis end,the generalized dispersion model, which is valid forshort and long times,is employed in the present study.Analytical expressions are derived for the convection and dispersion coefficients as functions of time, the aspect ratio ofthe channel, and the Debye-Hu¨ckel parameter representingthe thickness of the electric double layer. For transport ina channel of large aspect ratio, the dispersion may undergoseveral stages of transience. The initial, fast time development is controlled by molecular diffusion across the narrowchannel height, while the later, slower time development isgoverned by diffusion across the wider channel breadth.Fora sufficiently large aspect ratio, there can be an interludebetween these two periods during which the coefficient isnearly steady, signifying the resemblance of the transportto that in a parallel-plate channel.Given a sufficiently longtime, the dispersion coefficient will reach a fully-developedsteady value that may be several times higher than that without the side wall effects. The time scales for these periods oftransience are identified in this paper.  相似文献

A method is presented to discretize inclined non‐planar 2D fractures within a 3D finite element grid for subsurface flow and transport simulations. Each 2D fracture is represented as a triangulated surface. Each triangle is then discretized by 2D fracture elements that can be horizontal, vertical or inclined and that can be triangular or rectangular. The 3D grid representing a porous rock formation consists of hexahedra and can be irregular to allow grid refinement. An inclined fracture was discretized by (a) inclined triangles and (b) orthogonal rectangles and flow/transport simulations were run to compare the results. The comparison showed that (i) inclined fracture elements must be used to simulate 2D transient flow, (ii) results of 2D/3D steady‐state and 3D transient flow simulations are identical for both discretization methods, (iii) inclined fracture elements must be used to simulate 2D/3D transport because orthogonal fracture elements significantly underestimate concentrations, and (iv) orthogonal elements can be used to simulate 2D/3D transport if fracture permeability is corrected and multiplied by the ratio of fracture surface areas (orthogonal to inclined). Groundwater flow at a potential site for long‐term disposal of spent nuclear fuel was simulated where a complex 3D fracture network was discretized with this technique. The large‐scale simulation demonstrates that the proposed discretization procedure offers new possibilities to simulate flow and transport in complex 3D fracture networks. The new procedure has the further advantage that the same grid can be used for different realizations of a fracture network model with no need to regenerate the grid. A two‐dimensional model for the simulation of solute transport by convection and diffusion into shallow water flow over variable bottom is presented. It is based on a finite volume method over triangular unstructured grids. A first‐order upwind technique, a second order in space and time and an extended first‐order method are applied to solve the non‐diffusive terms in both the flow and solute equations and a centred implicit discretization is applied to the diffusion terms. The stability constraints are studied and the form to avoid oscillatory results in the solute concentration in the presence of complex flow situations is detailed. Some comparisons are carried out in order to show the performance in terms of accuracy of the different options. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we present spectral/hp penalty least‐squares finite element formulation for the numerical solution of unsteady incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. Pressure is eliminated from Navier–Stokes equations using penalty method, and finite element model is developed in terms of velocity, vorticity and dilatation. High‐order element expansions are used to construct discrete form. Unlike other penalty finite element formulations, equal‐order Gauss integration is used for both viscous and penalty terms of the coefficient matrix. For time integration, space–time decoupled schemes are implemented. Second‐order accuracy of the time integration scheme is established using the method of manufactured solution. Numerical results are presented for impulsively started lid‐driven cavity flow at Reynolds number of 5000 and transient flow over a backward‐facing step. The effect of penalty parameter on the accuracy is investigated thoroughly in this paper and results are presented for a range of penalty parameter. Present formulation produces very accurate results for even very low penalty parameters (10–50). Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
