ZnO nanoparticles were prepared by laser ablation of a zinc metal plate in a liquid environment using different surfactant (cationic, anionic, amphoteric, and nonionic) solutions. The nanoparticles were obtained in deionized water and in all surfactant solutions except the anionic surfactant solution. The average particle size and the standard deviation of particle size decreased with increasing amphoteric and nonionic surfactant concentrations. With the increase of the amphoteric surfactant concentration, the intensity of the defect emission caused by oxygen vacancies of ZnO rapidly decreased, while the exciton emission intensity increased. This indicates that anionic oxygen in the amphoteric surfactant molecules effectively occupied the oxygen vacancy sites at the ZnO nanoparticle surface due to charge matching with the positively charged ZnO nanoparticles.

ZnO nanostructures of different morphologies were grown in a controlled manner using a simple low-temperature hydrothermal technique. Controlling the content of ethylenediamine (soft surfactant) and the pH of the reaction mixture, nanoparticles, nanorods, and flowerlike ZnO structures could be synthesized at temperatures 80-100 degrees C with excellent reproducibility. High-resolution electron microscopy revealed the well crystalline nature of all the nanostructures with preferential growth along the [002] direction for linear structures. Photoluminescence spectra of the as-grown nanostructures revealed oxygen-vacancy-related defects in them, which could be reduced by air annealing at 250 degrees C. Possible mechanisms for the variation of morphology with synthesis parameters are discussed.

Effect of ablation environment on the nature of ZnO nanoparticles produced by laser ablation method in liquid medium is investigated experimentally. High purity Zn plate was irradiated by the fundamental beam of a Q-switch Nd-YAG laser in cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), acetone, sodium dodecyl sulfate and water. Produced nanoparticles were characterized by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction spectrum, and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results show that the highest rate of ablation occurs in CTAB. Largest nanoparticles are produced in acetone, and crystallinity of nanoparticles produced in CTAB is higher than other samples. CTAB surfactant changed the morphology of ZnO nanoparticles.

The phase diagram of Brij 97/water/IPM systems was determined at 25 degrees C. Rich liquid crystalline phases including Lalpha, H1, and cubic Fd3m phases were identified by means of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Microstructure transitions of liquid crystals with changes in surfactant concentration and oil content are explained qualitatively by the surfactant packing parameter (vL/aSlc). Dynamic rheological results indicate that all three kinds of liquid crystals investigated show high elasticity. The lamellar, Lalpha, phases formed in Brij 97/water with two different oils, oleic acid and geraniol, were also studied in comparison with those of Brij 97/water/IPM systems. The strength of the network of lamellar phases formed in Brij 97/water/oleic acid and Brij 97/water/geraniol systems are appreciably stronger than for Brij 97/water/IPM systems, indicated by the smaller area of surfactant molecules at the interface and the higher moduli (G' and G').

Shear-induced orientation of a rigid surfactant mesophase
An optically clear, crystalline, gel-like mesophase is formed by the addition of water to a micellar solution consisting of a mixture of 0.85 M anionic surfactant sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) and a 0.42 M zwitterionic surfactant phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) in isooctane. At 25 degrees C and water to AOT molar ratio of 70, the system has a columnar hexagonal microstructure with randomly oriented domains. The shear-induced orientation and subsequent relaxation of this structure were investigated by rheological characterization and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The rheological response implies that the domains align under shear, and remain aligned for several hours after cessation of shear. Shear-SANS confirms this picture. The sheared gel mesophase retains its alignment as the temperature is increased to 57 degrees C, indicating the potential to conduct templated polymer and polymer-ceramic composite materials synthesis in aligned systems.

Variable-aspect-ratio (length/diameter), one-dimensional (1-D) ZnO nanostructures (nanorods and nanowires) were prepared in alcohol/water solution by reacting a Zn2+ precursor with an organic weak base, tetramethylammonium hydroxide (Me4NOH). The effect of the experimental parameters (temperature, base concentration, reaction time, and water content) on nucleation, growth, and the final morphology of the ZnO nanostructures was investigated. The low-temperature syntheses (75-150 degrees C) yielded aspect ratios of the 1-D ZnO nanostructures that depended on the water content. The individual ZnO nanorods and nanowires were determined to be perfect, single crystals with their c axes as the primary growth direction.

Anisotropic growth of ZnO nanorod arrays on ZnO thin films was achieved at a temperature of 90 degrees C by a surfactant-assisted soft chemical approach with control over size and orientation. ZnO thin films with c-axis preferred orientation had been achieved by the sol-gel technique. Lengths, diameters, and the degree of alignment of the ZnO nanorods were controlled by changing the experimental parameters. It was observed that the surfactant was essential to restrict the lateral growth of the nanorods, whereas the pH level of the reaction medium controlled the length of the nanorods. On the other hand, the orientation of the nanorods depended on the crystalline orientation of the film as well as the pH of the reaction medium. Room-temperature photoluminescence studies revealed that the ZnO nanorods with the best alignment exhibited the best emission property. The ZnO nanorods exhibited a strong UV emission peak at approximately 3.22 eV, ascribed to the band-edge emission. The field emission studies of the well-aligned nanorod arrays exhibited a low turn-on field of 1.7 V/microm to get an emission current density of 0.1 microA/cm(2).

Surfactant-assisted alignment of ZnO nanocrystals to superstructures
Self-organization of ZnO nanoparticles into various superstructures (sheet, platelet, ring) has been achieved with the assistance of micelles formed by surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) under one-pot condition. The CTAB-modified zinc hydroxy double salt (Zn-HDS) mesocrystals act as intermediates to form ZnO hexagonal superstructures at temperatures as low as 50 degrees C. The decomposition temperature of Zn-HDS mesocrystals is much lower than that of the corresponding bulk crystals because the organic additive CTAB effectively decreases the degree of crystallinity. Taking advantage of temperature-induced phase transformation of micelles, two-stage self-organization can form ZnO platelets and ring mesocrystals, that is, ZnO ellipsoidal superstructures formed through vertical attachment on (0001) facets of basic units can further assemble to form ZnO platelets and rings through vertical attachment on (0001) facets of ZnO ellipsoidal superstructures. The structural transformation of micelles as shape templates can offer a new route for self-assembly of nonspherical colloids into three-dimensional photonic crystals. ZnO sheet, ring, and platelet mesocrystals with a high population of polar Zn-(0001) plane are expected to have high photocatalytic activity.

A nonhydrolytic route to quantum-sized (d < 9 nm) ZnO nanocrystals in homogeneous organic solutions is presented. Nearly spherical ZnO nanocrystals were grown in a surfactant mixture of hexadecylamine and oleic acid (OLEA) by means of a two-step chemical process, based on the hot reduction (at 180-250 degrees C) of a zinc halide by superhydride (LiBEt3H) followed by oxidation of the resulting product. The experimental results suggested that the controlled growth of ZnO in the nanosized regime depended both on the OLEA-assisted generation of intermediate metallic nanoparticles and on the adjustment of their oxidation conditions by using a mild oxidant, trimethylamine-N-oxide, rather than molecular oxygen. The present synthetic approach demonstrates to be particularly suitable to prepare organic-soluble ultra-small ZnO nanocrystals of low size dispersion and of stable size, which are appealing for optoelectronic, catalytic, and sensing purposes.

Homogeneous spherical palladium (Pd) nanoparticles were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation of a solid Pd foil target submerged in deionized water, without the addition of any external chemical surfactant. The influence of laser wavelength (355, 532, and 1064 nm) and fluence (8.92, 12.74, and 19.90 J/cm2) on nucleation, growth, and aggregation of Pd nanoparticles were systematically studied. Microstructural and optical properties of the obtained nanoparticles were studied by field emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and UV–vis spectroscopy. FETEM micrographs indicate that the average nanocrystallite sizes are relatively low (3–6 nm) and homogeneous for the particles synthesized at the laser wavelengths of 355 and 532 nm. However, at a laser wavelength of 1064 nm, the average nanocrystallite size is relatively large and inhomogeneous in nature. Moreover, we observe that the mean diameter and production rate of particles increases with an increase in laser fluence. The selected area electron diffraction patterns obtained from isolated Pd nanoparticles show the characteristic diffused electron diffraction rings of polycrystalline materials with a face-centered cubic structure. Absorbance spectrum of the synthesized nanoparticle solution shows a broad absorption band, which corresponds to a typical inter-band transition of a metallic system, indicating the production of pure palladium nanoparticles. The present work provides new insights into the effect of laser wavelength and fluence on the control of size and aggregation of palladium nanoparticles in the liquid medium.

This paper describes the control of the nucleation and growth of calcite crystals by a matrix composed of an agarose hydrogel on top of a carboxylate-terminated self-assembled monolayer (SAM). The design of this matrix is based upon examples from biomineralization in which hydrogels are coupled with functionalized, organic surfaces to control, simultaneously, crystal morphology and orientation. In the synthetic system, calcite crystals nucleate from the (012) plane (the same plane that is observed in solution growth). The aspect ratio (length/width) of the crystals decreases from 2.1 +/- 0.22 in solution to 1.2 +/- 0.04 in a 3 w/v % agarose gel. One possible explanation for the change in morphology is the incorporation of gel fibers inside of the crystals during the growth process. Etching of the gel-grown crystals with deionized water reveals an interpenetrating network of gel fibers and crystalline material. This work begins to provide insight into why organisms use hydrogels to control the growth of crystals.

Uniform nylon 6 nanofibers with diameters around 200 nm were prepared by electrospinning. Polymorphic phase transitions and crystal orientation of nylon 6 in unconfined (i.e., as-electrospun) and a high T(g) (340 degrees C) polyimide confined nanofibers were studied. Similar to melt-spun nylon 6 fibers, electrospun nylon 6 nanofibers also exhibited predominant, meta-stable gamma crystalline form, and the gamma-crystal (chain) axes preferentially oriented parallel to the fiber axis. Upon annealing above 150 degrees C, gamma-form crystals gradually melted and recrystallized into the thermodynamically stable alpha-form crystals, which ultimately melted at 220 degrees C. Release of surface tension accompanied this melt-recrystallization process, as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry. For confined nanofibers, both the melt-recrystallization and surface tension release processes were substantially depressed; gamma-form crystals did not melt and recrystallize into alpha-form crystals until 210 degrees C, only 10 degrees C below the T(m) at 220 degrees C. After complete melting of nano-confined crystals at 240 degrees C and recrystallization at 100 degrees C, only alpha-form crystals oriented perpendicular to the nanofiber axis were obtained. In the polyimide-confined nanofibers, the Brill transition (from the monoclinic alpha-form to a high temperature monoclinic form) was observed at 180-190 degrees C, which was at least 20 degrees C higher than that in unconfined nylon 6 at approximately 160 degrees C. This, again, was attributed to the confinement effect.

ZnO nanorings were synthesized on a large scale by an easy solution-based method at 70°C for 5 h using hexamethylenetramine (C6H12N4, HMT) and Zn (NO3)2·2H2O as raw materials in the presence of surfactant poly(acrylamide-co-diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PAM-CTAC). The structure and morphology of the products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The influence of experimental conditions such as concentration of surfactant and reactants, reaction temperature on the structure and morphology of the products were investigated. A probable formation mechanism of ZnO nanorings in the presence of surfactant PAM-CTAC was discussed. The results show that the products are wurtzite hexagonal ZnO nanorings with an inner diameter of 220 nm and a wall thickness of 70 nm. Reaction temperature and concentration of reactants influence the shape and size of ZnO nanorings but PAM-CTAC plays the key role in the formation of ZnO nanorings. Through adjusting the concentration of PAM-CTAC, controlled-synthesis of ZnO nanorings can be realized. A room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of ZnO obtained shows that the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the UV emission (∼7 nm) is much narrower than that of commercial ZnO bulk crystals (∼18 nm). The narrow FWHM confirms the uniformity and narrow size distribution of the synthesized ZnO crystals. __________ Translated from Chemical Journal of Chinese Universities, 2008, 29(1): 28–32  相似文献

The chemical synthesis of the dipeptide acetyl phenyl iso-leucin-amide (AcPheIleNH(2)) in tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB)/ heptane/octanol/carbonate buffer reversed micelles is described. The co-existence of the surfactant bounded minute water pools within the bulk organic solvent enables the simultaneous solubilization of the polar (IleNH(2)) and apolar (AcPheOEt) substrates, thus enabling the synthesis to take place at the micellar interface. The synthesis was favored by increasing the micellar interface via an increase in water content and surfactant concentration. The best dipeptide yield (87%) was obtained at 32 degrees C, with the largest concentrations of TTAB (200 mM) and water (1100 mM) tested. The low solubility of the dipeptide in the micellar media further led to the formation and growth of needle-like crystals during synthesis, thus enabling the removal of product from solution.

Two hydroxy double salts (HDSs), zinc copper hydroxy acetate (ZCA) and zinc nickel hydroxy acetate (ZNA), and an analogous layered compound, zinc hydroxy acetate (ZHA), have been prepared by a coprecipitation method. The thermal degradation of these materials was characterized via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and TGA coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of gas-phase products, TGA-FTIR. Loss of physisorbed and interlayer H2O was observed between 50 and 150 degrees C for all compounds. Acetic acid, acetone, water, and CO2 were released at high temperatures with relative acetone yields found to be dependent on precursor identity, with very little formed from ZCA compared with ZHA and ZNA. Combined FTIR and XRD analysis of solid residues extracted at different points in the heating profile suggests that ketonization occurs via dissociative adsorption of acetic acid on ZnO surfaces. Nanometer-sized ZnO particles were formed from ZHA, showing slight preferential growth in the ZnO (002) lattice direction, while the presence of a second metal, Ni or Cu, served to retard ZnO crystallite growth at temperatures below 600 degrees C and eliminate preferential growth. ZCA leads to the formation of reduced copper species (metallic copper and Cu2O) when heated to 250 degrees C.

A model Phillips catalyst for ethylene polymerization, prepared by spin coating a Cr(III)(Cr(acac)3) precursor on a silicon wafer, was submitted to an oxidative activation. Laser ablation Fourier transform mass spectrometry provided direct information on molecular species at the silicon wafer surface during activation. At 350 degrees C the chromium precursor was degraded, while chromium oxide species were formed. The chromium concentration decreased with temperature. The activated model catalyst was active for ethylene polymerization. Using complementary techniques (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry), the polymer was identified as crystalline polyethylene. After 1 h of polymerization at 160 degrees C, dome-like structures were observed by atomic force microscopy. Their morphologies were constituted of regions of parallel aligned lamellae of polymer.

Large-scale arrayed ZnO crystals with a series of novel morphologies, including tower-like, flower-like, and tube-like samples, have been successfully fabricated by a simple aqueous solution route. The morphology and orientation of the obtained ZnO crystal arrays can be conveniently tailored by changing the reactants and experimental conditions. For example, the tower-like ZnO crystal arrays were obtained in a reaction solution system including zinc salt, ammonia, ammonium salt, and thiourea, and the orientation of these tower-like crystals could be controlled by the contents of these reactants. Flower-like ZnO arrays were obtained at lower temperatures, and tube-like ZnO arrays were obtained by ultrasonic pretreatment of the reaction system. The growth mechanism of the tower-like and tube-like ZnO crystals was investigated by FESEM. The results show that tower-like crystals grow layer by layer, while tube-like crystals grow from active nanowires. Ultrasonic pretreatment is proved to be effective in promoting the formation of active nuclei, which have important effects on the formation of the tube-like ZnO crystals. In addition, large-scale arrays of these ZnO crystals can be successfully synthesized onto various substrates such as amorphous glass, crystalline quartz, and PET. This implies this chemical method has a wide application in the fabrication of nano-/microscale devices.

We have investigated the phase behavior of a fluorinated surfactant R(7)(F)(EO)(7) in water. The cloud point is situated at 19 degrees C for 2 wt% of surfactant. Using this surfactant, mesoporous materials have been synthesized with micellar solution prepared either at 10 degrees C (below the cloud point) or at 40 degrees C (above the cloud point). Results show that whatever the syntheses conditions, only wormhole-like structure is recovered. The effect of perfluorodecalin addition on the fluorinated surfactant/water system was also investigated. Swollen micelles, microemulsion, and lamellar (L(alpha)) liquid crystals were identified. When perfluorodecalin is added, the cloud point is shifted toward higher temperature. As regards the mesoporous syntheses, perfluorodecalin plays a dual role. First, incorporation of perfluorodecalin leads to the formation of well ordered materials. Secondly, the pore size enlargement occurs when perfluorodecalin is added. Our results evidence that the ratio between the volume of the hydrophilic headgroup (V(H)) and the hydrophobic part (V(L)) of the surfactant is not an efficiency parameter to explain the ordering improvement of mesoporous materials and that we should rather consider the existence of the cloud point curve, which disturbs the cooperative templating mechanism (CTM).
