The thermal efficiency of the kinesin cycle at stalling is presently a matter of some debate, with published predictions ranging from 0 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 158102 (2007); Phys. Rev. E 78, 011915 (2008)] to 100% [in Molecular Motors, edited by M. Schliwa (Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH, Weinheim (2003), p. 207]. In this note we attemp to clarify the issues involved. We also find an upper bound on the kinesin efficiency by constructing an ideal kinesin cycle to which the real cycle may be compared. The ideal cycle has a thermal efficiency of less than one, and the real one is less efficient than the ideal one always, in compliance with Carnot’s theorem.  相似文献

Some MIT researchers [Phys. Rev. A 75, 042327 (2007)] have recently claimed that their implementation of the Slutsky-Brandt attack [Phys. Rev. A 57, 2383 (1998); Phys. Rev. A 71, 042312 (2005)] to the BB84 quantum-key-distribution (QKD) protocol puts the security of this protocol “to the test” by simulating “the most powerful individual-photon attack” [Phys. Rev. A 73, 012315 (2006)]. A related unfortunate news feature by a scientific journal [G. Brumfiel, Quantum cryptography is hacked, News @ Nature (april 2007); Nature 447, 372 (2007)] has spurred some concern in the QKD community and among the general public by misinterpreting the implications of this work. The present article proves the existence of a stronger individual attack on QKD protocols with encrypted error correction, for which tight bounds are shown, and clarifies why the claims of the news feature incorrectly suggest a contradiction with the established “old-style” theory of BB84 individual attacks. The full implementation of a quantum cryptographic protocol includes a reconciliation and a privacy-amplification stage, whose choice alters in general both the maximum extractable secret and the optimal eavesdropping attack. The authors of [Phys. Rev. A 75, 042327 (2007)] are concerned only with the error-free part of the so-called sifted string, and do not consider faulty bits, which, in the version of their protocol, are discarded. When using the provably superior reconciliation approach of encrypted error correction (instead of error discard), the Slutsky-Brandt attack is no more optimal and does not “threaten” the security bound derived by Lütkenhaus [Phys. Rev. A 59, 3301 (1999)]. It is shown that the method of Slutsky and collaborators [Phys. Rev. A 57, 2383 (1998)] can be adapted to reconciliation with error correction, and that the optimal entangling probe can be explicitly found. Moreover, this attack fills Lütkenhaus bound, proving that it is tight (a fact which was not previously known).  相似文献

It has recently been claimed that the dynamics of long-wavelength phason fluctuations has been observed in i-AlPdMn quasicrystals [S. Francoual et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 225501 (2003); A. Létoublon et al. 54, 753 (2001)]. We will show that the data reported call for a more detailed development of the elasticity theory of Jarić and Nelsson [M.V. Jarić and D.R. Nelsson, Phys. Rev. B 37, 4458 (1988)] in order to determine the nature of small phonon-like atomic displacements with a symmetry that follows the phason elastic constants. We also show that a simple model with a single diffusing tile is sufficient to produce a signal that (1) is situated at a “satellite position” at a distance q from each Bragg peak; that (2) has an intensity that scales with the intensity of the corresponding Bragg peak; (3) falls off as 1/q2; and (4) has a time decay constant that is proportional to 1/Dq2. It is thus superfluous to call for a picture of “phason waves” in order to explain such data, especially as such “waves” violate many physical principles.  相似文献

In the classical limit no work is needed to couple a system to a bath with sufficiently weak coupling strength (or with arbitrarily finite coupling strength for a linear system) at the same temperature. In the quantum domain this may be expected to change due to system-bath entanglement. Here we show analytically that the work needed to couple a single linear oscillator with finite strength to a bath cannot be less than the work obtainable from the oscillator when it decouples from the bath. Therefore, the quantum second law holds for an arbitrary temperature. This is a generalization of the previous results for zero temperature [Ford and O'Connell, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 020402 (2006); Kim and Mahler, Eur. Phys. J. B 54, 405 (2006)]; in the high temperature limit we recover the classical behavior.  相似文献

We perform a computational study of a variant of the “train” model for earthquakes [Phys. Rev. A 46, 6288 (1992)], where we assume a static friction that is a stochastic function of position rather than being velocity dependent. The model consists of an array of blocks coupled by springs, with the forces between neighbouring blocks balanced by static friction. We calculate the probability, P(s), of the occurrence of avalanches with a size s or greater, finding that our results are consistent with the phenomenology and also with previous models which exhibit a power law over a wide range. We show that the train model may be mapped onto a stochastic sandpile model and study a variant of the latter for non-spherical grains. We show that, in this case, the model has critical behaviour only for grains with large aspect ratio, as was already shown in experiments with real ricepiles. We also demonstrate a way to introduce randomness in a physically motivated manner into the model.  相似文献

The long-wavelength properties of the (d + 1)-dimensional Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (KS) equation with both conservative and nonconservative noises are investigated by use of the dynamic renormalization-group (DRG) theory. The dynamic exponent z and roughness exponent α are calculated for substrate dimensions d = 1 and d = 2, respectively. In the case of d = 1, we arrive at the critical exponents z = 1.5 and α = 0.5 , which are consistent with the results obtained by Ueno et al. in the discussion of the same noisy KS equation in 1+1 dimensions [Phys. Rev. E 71, 046138 (2005)] and are believed to be identical with the dynamic scaling of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) in 1+1 dimensions. In the case of d = 2, we find a fixed point with the dynamic exponents z = 2.866 and α = -0.866 , which show that, as in the 1 + 1 dimensions situation, the existence of the conservative noise in 2 + 1 or higher dimensional KS equation can also lead to new fixed points with different dynamic scaling exponents. In addition, since a higher order approximation is adopted, our calculations in this paper have improved the results obtained previously by Cuerno and Lauritsen [Phys. Rev. E 52, 4853 (1995)] in the DRG analysis of the noisy KS equation, where the conservative noise is not taken into account.  相似文献

Human beings like to believe they are in control of their destiny. This ubiquitous trait seems to increase motivation and persistence, and is probably evolutionarily adaptive [J.D. Taylor, S.E. Brown, Psych. Bull. 103, 193 (1988); A. Bandura, Self-efficacy: the exercise of control (WH Freeman, New York, 1997)]. But how good really is our ability to control? How successful is our track record in these areas? There is little understanding of when and under what circumstances we may over-estimate [E. Langer, J. Pers. Soc. Psych. 7, 185 (1975)] or even lose our ability to control and optimize outcomes, especially when they are the result of aggregations of individual optimization processes. Here, we demonstrate analytically using the theory of Markov Chains and by numerical simulations in two classes of games, the Time-Horizon Minority Game [M.L. Hart, P. Jefferies, N.F. Johnson, Phys. A 311, 275 (2002)] and the Parrondo Game [J.M.R. Parrondo, G.P. Harmer, D. Abbott, Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 5226 (2000); J.M.R. Parrondo, How to cheat a bad mathematician (ISI, Italy, 1996)], that agents who optimize their strategy based on past information may actually perform worse than non-optimizing agents. In other words, low-entropy (more informative) strategies under-perform high-entropy (or random) strategies. This provides a precise definition of the “illusion of control” in certain set-ups a priori defined to emphasize the importance of optimization. An erratum to this article is available at .  相似文献

With the aim of studying stochastic resonance (SR) in a double-well potential when the noise source has a spectral density of the form f (with varying κ), we have extended a procedure introduced by Kaulakys et al. (Phys. Rev. E 70, 020101 (2004)). In order to achieve an analytical understanding of the results, we have obtained an effective Markovian approximation that allows us to make a systematic study of the effect of such noise on the SR phenomenon. A comparison of the numerical and analytical results shows an excellent qualitative agreement indicating that the effective Markovian approximation is able to correctly describe the general trends.  相似文献

Investigation of thin metallic film properties by means of picosecond ultrasonics [C. Thomsen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 53, 989 (1984)] has been under the scope of several studies. Generation of longitudinal and shear waves [T. Pézeril et al., Phys. Rev. B 73, 132301 (2006); O. Matsuda et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 095501 (2004)] with a wave vector normal to the film free surface has been demonstrated. Such measurements cannot provide complete information about properties of anisotropic films. Extreme focusing of a laser pump beam (≈0.5 μm) on the sample surface has recently allowed us to provide evidence of picosecond acoustic diffraction in thin metallic films (≈1 μm) [C. Rossignol et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 166106 (2005)]. The resulting longitudinal and shear wavefronts propagate at group velocity through the bulk of the film. To interpret the received signals, source directivity diagrams are calculated taking into account material anisotropy, optical penetration, and laser beam width on the sample surface. It is shown that acoustic diffraction increases with optical penetration, so competing with the increasing of directivity caused by beam width. Reflection with mode conversion at the film-substrate interface is discussed.  相似文献

The present study generalizes the model of extended stochastic systems with a field-dependent kinetic coefficient [M. Ibanes, J. Garcia-Ojalvo, R. Toral, J.M. Sancho, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 020601 (2001)] to systems with symmetric and asymmetric bistable potentials. It is found that in systems with a relaxational flow and a symmetric local potential, reentrant phase transitions can be observed. In the case of an asymmetric local potential, a hysteresis-like behaviour in the order parameter appears. It is shown that such phase transitions can be controlled by the constant that governs relaxation flow, noise intensity and spatial coupling intensity.  相似文献

We provide a simple physical picture of the loss of coherence between two coherently split one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates. The source of the dephasing is identified with nonlinear corrections to the elementary excitation energies in either of the two independent condensates. We retrieve the result by Burkov, Lukin and Demler [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 200404 (2007)] on the subexponential decay of the coherence ∝exp [-(t/t0)2/3] for the large time t, however, the scaling of t0 differs.  相似文献

We present here a detailed study of the behaviour of a three dimensional Brownian motor based on cold atoms in a double optical lattice [P. Sj?lund et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 190602 (2006)]. This includes both experiments and numerical simulations of a Brownian particle. The potentials used are spatially and temporally symmetric, but combined spatiotemporal symmetry is broken by phase shifts and asymmetric transfer rates between potentials. The diffusion of atoms in the optical lattices is rectified and controlled both in direction and speed along three dimensions. We explore a large range of experimental parameters, where irradiances and detunings of the optical lattice lights are varied within the dissipative regime. Induced drift velocities in the order of one atomic recoil velocity have been achieved.  相似文献

We apply a PDE-based method to deduce the critical time and the size of the giant component of the “triangle percolation” on the Erdős-Rényi random graph process investigated by Derényi, Palla and Vicsek in (Phys. Rev. Lett. 94:160202, [2005]; J. Stat. Phys. 128:219–227, [2007]).  相似文献

The roughening of interfaces moving in inhomogeneous media is investigated by numerical integration of the phenomenological stochastic differential equation proposed by Kardar, Parisi, and Zhang [Phys. Rev. Lett. 56, 889 (1986)] with quenched noise (QKPZ) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 920 (1995)]. We express the evolution equations for the mean height and the roughness into two contributions: the local and the lateral one in order to compare them with the local and the lateral contributions obtained for the directed percolation depinning models (DPD) introduced independently by Tang and Leschhorn [Phys. Rev A 45, R8309 (1992)] and Buldyrev et al. [Phys. Rev A 45, R8313 (1992)]. These models are classified in the same universality class of the QKPZ although the mechanisms of growth are quite different. In the DPD models the lateral contribution is a coupled effect of the competition between the local growth and the lateral one. In these models the lateral contribution leads to an increasing of the roughness near the criticality while in the QKPZ equation this contribution always flattens the roughness. Systems driven by Poisson-distributed quantal inputs can be described as “shot noise” stochastic processes. This formalism can apply to neurons which receive a large number of Poisson-distributed synaptic inputs of similar quantal size. However, the presence of temporal correlations between these inputs destroys their quantal nature, and such systems can no longer be described by classical shot noise processes. Here, we show that explicit expressions for various statistical properties, such as the amplitude distribution and the power spectral density, can be deduced and investigated as functions of the correlation between input channels. The monotonic behavior of these expressions allows an one-to-one relation between temporal correlations and the statistics of fluctuations. Multi-channel shot noise processes, therefore, open a way to deduce correlations in input patterns by analyzing fluctuations in experimental systems. We discuss applications such as detecting correlations in networks of neurons from intracellular recordings of single neurons.  相似文献

From the work by Perrie et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 54, 1790 (1985)], photon pairs from the 2s 1/2 → 1s 1/2 (two-photon) decay of atomic hydrogen are known to be quantum mechanically correlated. In these experiments, the polarization states of the photons emitted in back-to-back geometry were shown to violate the Bell inequality as a qualitative sign of nonlocality and entanglement. In the present contribution, we analyze how these nonlocal quantum correlations, as given by the violation of the Bell inequality, differ from the concurrence as a true entanglement measure. Results are shown for both quantifiers in dependence of the decay geometry and the initial polarization of the atoms for the 2s 1/2 → 1s 1/2 and 3d 5/2 → 1s 1/2 two-photon decay of atomic hydrogen. These results display the difference between nonlocality and entanglement and, hence, may stimulate further experiments on nonlocal quantum correlations in atomic systems.  相似文献

Spiral turbulence observed in Couette-Taylor system has been characterized using the phase diffusion equation suggested by Hegseth et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 62, 257 (1989)]. From space-time diagrams, we have measured the diffusion coefficient, the diffusion velocity, and the turbulent spiral pitch.  相似文献

Light experiences a moving medium as an effective gravitational field. In the limit of low medium velocities the medium flow plays the role of a magnetic vector potential. We review the background of our theory [U. Leonhardt and P. Piwnicki, Phys. Rev. A 60, 4301 (1999); Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 822 (2000)], including our proposal of making optical black holes. We study the threshold in systems which exhibit a symmetry breaking instability, described by a PDE that is of first order in time like the Ginzburg-Landau or Swift-Hohenberg equation, with the control parameter fluctuating in space and time. From the zero-dimensional case it is known that due to the long tails of the probability distributions all the moments of the linearized equation have different thresholds and none of them coincides with the threshold of the full nonlinear equation, which in fact has no noise-induced shift. We show that in the spatially extended case and with noise of finite correlation length there is a noise-induced threshold shift. At linear order in the fluctuation strength ε the threshold coincides with that of the first (and second) moment of the linearized equation. At order ε2 differences in the thresholds arise. We introduce a method to obtain the threshold of the full system up to order ε2 from the stability exponents of the first and second moment of the linearized equations. A preliminary account of this work has been given elsewhere [A. Becker and L. Kramer, Phys. Rev. Lett. 73 (1994) 955].  相似文献
