We continue our work [E. Kaniuth, A.T. Lau, J. Pym, On φ-amenability of Banach algebras, Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 144 (2008) 85-96] in the study of amenability of a Banach algebra A defined with respect to a character φ of A. Various necessary and sufficient conditions of a global and a pointwise nature are found for a Banach algebra to possess a φ-mean of norm 1. We also completely determine the size of the set of φ-means for a separable weakly sequentially complete Banach algebra A with no φ-mean in A itself. A number of illustrative examples are discussed.  相似文献

For an invariant subspace F for the multiplication operator Mz, we derive some spectral properties of the multiplication operator Mφ : FF. We assess the performance of an exponential integrator for advancing stiff, semidiscrete formulations of the unsaturated Richards equation in time. The scheme is of second order and explicit in nature but requires the action of the matrix function φ(A) = A−1(eA − I) on a suitability defined vector v at each time step. When the matrix A is large and sparse, φ(A)v can be approximated by Krylov subspace methods that require only matrix-vector products with A. We prove that despite the use of this approximation the scheme remains second order. Furthermore, we provide a practical variable-stepsize implementation of the integrator by deriving an estimate of the local error that requires only a single additional function evaluation. Numerical experiments performed on two-dimensional test problems demonstrate that this implementation outperforms second-order, variable-stepsize implementations of the backward differentiation formulae.  相似文献

If A and B are self-adjoint operators, this paper shows that A and B have order isomorphic invariant subspace lattices if and only if there are Borel subsets E and F of σ(A) and σ(B), respectively, whose complements have spectral measure zero, and there is a bijective function φ: EF such that (i) Δ is a Borel subset of E if and only if φ(Δ) is a Borel subset of F; (ii) a Borel subset Δ of E has A-spectral measure zero if and only if φ(Δ) has B-spectral measure zero; (iii) B is unitarily equivalent to φ(A). If A is any self-adjoint operator, there is an associated function κA : N ∪ {∞} → (N ∪ {0, ∞}) × {0,1} defined in this paper. If F denotes the collection of all functions from N ∪ {∞} into (N ∪ {0,∞}) × {0,1}, then F is a parameter space for the isomorphism classes of the invariant subspace lattices of self-adjoint operators. That is, two self-adjoint operators A and B have isomorphic invariant subspace lattices if and only if κA = κB. The paper ends with some comments on the corresponding problem for normal operators.  相似文献

Let X be a real Banach space. We prove that the existence of an injective, positive, symmetric and not strictly singular operator from X into its dual implies that either X admits an equivalent Hilbertian norm or it contains a nontrivially complemented subspace which is isomorphic to a Hilbert space. Let φ be a Drinfeld A-module of arbitrary rank and arbitrary characteristic over a finitely generated field K, and set GK=Gal(Ksep/K). Let E=EndK(φ). We show that for almost all primes p of A the image of the group ring A[GK] in EndA(Tp(φ)) is the commutant of E. In the special case E=A it follows that the representation of GK on the p-torsion points φ[p](Ksep) of φ is absolutely irreducible for almost all p.  相似文献

Let F be a closed face of the weak1 compact convex state space of a unital C1-algebra A. The author has already shown that F is a Choquet simplex if and only if pφFπφ(A)″pφF is abelian for any φ in F with associated cyclic representation (Hφ,πφ,ξφ), where pφF is the orthogonal projection of Hφ onto the subspace spanned by vectors η defining vector states a → 〈πφ(a)η, η)〉 lying in F. It is shown here that if B is a C1-subalgebra of A containing the unit and such that ξφ is cyclic in Hφ for πφ(B) for any φ in F, then the boundary measures on F are subcentral as measures on the state space of B if and only if pφF(πφ(A), πφ(B)′)″pφF is abelian for all φ in F. If A is separable, this is equivalent to the condition that any state in F with (πφ(A)′ ∩ πφ(B)″) one-dimensional is pure. Taking A to be the crossed product of a discrete C1-dynamical system (B, G, α), these results generalise known criteria for the system to be G-central.  相似文献

We introduce the concept of a strict l-metric projector, based in the definition of strict approximation, to prove that for each matrix A of order m×n with coefficients in the field R of real numbers there exists a set of operators G: RmRn homogeneous and continuous, but not necessarily linear (strict generalized inverse) such that AGA = A and 6AGy?y6 is minimized for all y, when the norm is the l norm. We investigate the properties of these operators and prove that there are two distinguished operators A-1∞, β and A-1 which are extensions of the generalized inverse introduced by Newman and Odell in the case of a strictly convex norm.  相似文献

In this paper, first we introduce a new notion of commuting condition that φφ 1 A = A φ 1 φ between the shape operator A and the structure tensors φ and φ 1 for real hypersurfaces in G 2(? m+2). Suprisingly, real hypersurfaces of type (A), that is, a tube over a totally geodesic G 2(? m+1) in complex two plane Grassmannians G 2(? m+2) satisfy this commuting condition. Next we consider a complete classification of Hopf hypersurfaces in G 2(? m+2) satisfying the commuting condition. We introduce a method for the simultaneous study of a BMO function φ and its dyadic square function S(φ) that can yield sharp norm inequalities between the two. One of the applications is the sharp bound for the p-th moment of S(φ), 0<p<∞, which in turn implies the square-exponential integrability of the square function. We also present sharp refinements of these inequalities in the more restrictive case when φ is assumed to be bounded.  相似文献

Given a square matrix A, the inverse subspace problem is concerned with determining a closest matrix to A with a prescribed invariant subspace. When A is Hermitian, the closest matrix may be required to be Hermitian. We measure distance in the Frobenius norm and discuss applications to Krylov subspace methods for the solution of large‐scale linear systems of equations and eigenvalue problems as well as to the construction of blurring matrices. Extensions that allow the matrix A to be rectangular and applications to Lanczos bidiagonalization, as well as to the recently proposed subspace‐restricted SVD method for the solution of linear discrete ill‐posed problems, also are considered.Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The paper deals with the operator of metric projection onto an arbitrary one-dimensional Chebyshev subspace 〈φ〉 of the space C[K] of real-valued functions defined and continuous on a Hausdorff compact set K. The linearity coefficient of the operator is calculated in terms of the parameters of the generating function φ. We provide a method for approximating the norm of the composition operator Cφ on the Dirichlet space to any desired degree of accuracy. We obtain a representation for the norm of a composition operator on the Dirichlet space induced by a map of the form φ(z)=az+b. We compare this result to an upper bound for ‖Cφ‖ that is valid whenever φ is univalent. Free probabilistic considerations of type B first appeared in the paper of Biane, Goodman and Nica [P. Biane, F. Goodman, A. Nica, Non-crossing cumulants of type B, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 355 (2003) 2263-2303]. Recently, connections between type B and infinitesimal free probability were put into evidence by Belinschi and Shlyakhtenko [S.T. Belinschi, D. Shlyakhtenko, Free probability of type B: Analytic aspects and applications, preprint, 2009, available online at www.arxiv.org under reference arXiv:0903.2721]. The interplay between “type B” and “infinitesimal” is also the object of the present paper. We study infinitesimal freeness for a family of unital subalgebras A1,…,Ak in an infinitesimal noncommutative probability space (A,φ,φ) and we introduce a concept of infinitesimal non-crossing cumulant functionals for (A,φ,φ), obtained by taking a formal derivative in the formula for usual non-crossing cumulants. We prove that the infinitesimal freeness of A1,…,Ak is equivalent to a vanishing condition for mixed cumulants; this gives the infinitesimal counterpart for a theorem of Speicher from “usual” free probability. We show that the lattices NC(B)(n) of non-crossing partitions of type B appear in the combinatorial study of (A,φ,φ), in the formulas for infinitesimal cumulants and when describing alternating products of infinitesimally free random variables. As an application of alternating free products, we observe the infinitesimal analogue for the well-known fact that freeness is preserved under compression with a free projection. As another application, we observe the infinitesimal analogue for a well-known procedure used to construct free families of free Poisson elements. Finally, we discuss situations when the freeness of A1,…,Ak in (A,φ) can be naturally upgraded to infinitesimal freeness in (A,φ,φ), for a suitable choice of a “companion functional” .  相似文献
