The preparation of physically crosslinked hydrogels from quasi ABA‐triblock copolymers with a water‐soluble middle block and hydrophobic end groups is reported. The hydrophilic monomer N‐acryloylmorpholine is copolymerized with hydrophobic isobornyl acrylate via a one‐pot sequential monomer addition through reversible addition fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization in an automated parallel synthesizer, allowing systematic variation of polymer chain length and hydrophobic–hydrophilic ratio. Hydrophobic interactions between the outer blocks cause them to phase‐separate into larger hydrophobic domains in water, forming physical crosslinks between the polymers. The resulting hydrogels are studied using rheology and their self‐healing ability after large strain damage is shown.

This review describes different synthetic strategies towards sequence‐defined, monodisperse macromolecules, which are built up by iterative approaches and lead to linear non‐natural polymer structures. The review is divided in three parts: solution phase‐, solid phase‐, and fluorous‐ and polymer‐tethered approaches. Moreover, synthesis procedures leading to conjugated and non‐conjugated macromolecules are considered and discussed in the respective sections. A major focus in the evaluation is the applicability of the different approaches in polymer chemistry. In this context, simple procedures for monomer and oligomer synthesis, overall yields, scalability, purity of the oligomers, and the achievable level of control (side‐chains, backbone, stereochemistry) are important benchmarks.

An alkyne‐functionalized ruthenium(II) bis‐terpyridine complex is directly copolymerized with phenylacetylene by alkyne polymerization. The polymer is characterized by size‐exclusion chromatography (SEC), 1H NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements, and thermal analysis. The photophysical properties of the polymer are studied by UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. In addition, spectro‐electrochemical measurements are carried out. Time‐resolved luminescence lifetime decay curves show an enhanced lifetime of the metal complex attached to the conjugated polymer backbone compared with the Ru(tpy)22+ model complex.

Rewritable optical storage has been obtained in a spiropyran doped liquid crystal polymer films. Pictures can be recorded on films upon irradiation with UV light passing through a grayscale mask and they can be rapidly erased using visible light. Films present improved photosensitivity and optical contrast, good resistance to photofatigue, and high spatial resolution. These photochromic films work as a multifunctional, dynamic photosensitive material with a real‐time image recording feature.

A new class of thermoresponsive random polyurethanes is successfully synthesized and characterized. Poly(ethylene glycol) diol (Mn = 1500 Da) and 2,2‐dimethylolpropionic acid are reacted with isophorone diisocyanate in the presence of methane sulfonic acid catalyst. It is found that these polyurethanes are thermoresponsive in aqueous media and manifest a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) that can be easily tuned from 30 °C to 70 °C by increasing the poly(ethylene glycol) content. Their sharp LCST transitions make these random polyurethanes ideal candidates for stimuli‐responsive drug delivery applications. To that end, the ability of these systems to efficiently sequester doxorubicin (up to 36 wt%) by means of a sonication/dialysis method is successfully demonstrated. Additionally, it is also demonstrated that accelerated doxorubicin release kinetics from the nanoparticles can be attained above the LCST.

This work demonstrates a new reactive and functional hybrid (S‐MMA‐POSS) of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and sulfur prepared with a direct reaction between a multifunctional methacrylated POSS compound (MMA‐POSS) and elemental sulfur (S8) through the “inverse vulcanization” process. S‐MMA‐POSS is an effective building block for imparting self‐healing ability to the corresponding thermally crosslinked POSS‐containing nanocomposites through a self‐curing reaction and co‐curing reaction with conventional thermosetting resins. Moreover, S‐MMA‐POSS is also a useful precursor for preparation of materials with high transparency in mid‐infrared region.

Hydrozirconation on vinyl‐terminated substrates (silicon wafer and nanosilica sphere) is employed as an efficient way for immobilization of zirconocene catalyst through Zr C bonds, which is applied in surface coordination ethylene polymerization producing surface‐tethered polyethylene (PE). The formation of Zr C σ bond induced by hydrozirconation provides an initiator precursor for growing a layer of PE covalently linked onto substrates. The results from SEM, AFM, and TEM show that the surface polymerization is controlled by hydrozirconation. Surface pattern or core–shell structure with crystalline PE coating can be formed, when silicon wafer is selectively functionalized with vinyl‐groups or vinyl‐modified nanosilica is applied. It is believed that hydrozirconation for the synthesis of zirconocene initiator can be a versatile route to prepare polyolefin hybrid materials.

A photocleavable terpolymer hydrogel cross‐linked with o‐nitrobenzyl derivative cross‐linker is shown to be capable of self‐shaping without losing its physical integrity and robustness due to spontaneous asymmetric swelling of network caused by UV‐light‐induced gradient cleavage of chemical cross‐linkages. The continuum model and finite element method are used to elucidate the curling mechanism underlying. Remarkably, based on the self‐changing principle, the photosensitive hydrogels can be developed as photoprinting soft and wet platforms onto which specific 3D characters and images are faithfully duplicated in macro/microscale without contact by UV light irradiation under the cover of customized photomasks. Importantly, a quick response (QR) code is accurately printed on the photoactive hydrogel for the first time. Scanning QR code with a smartphone can quickly connect to a web page. This photoactive hydrogel is promising to be a new printing or recording material.

A self‐healing hydrogel is prepared by crosslinking acrylamide with a host–guest macro‐crosslinker assembled from poly(β‐cyclodextrin) nanogel and azobenzeneacrylamide. The photoisomerizable azobenzene moiety can change its binding affinity with β‐cyclodextrin, therefore the crosslinking density and rheology property of the hydrogel can be tuned with light stimulus. The hydrogel can repair its wound autonomously through the dynamic host–guest interaction. In addition, the wounded hydrogel will lose its ability of self‐healing when exposed to ultraviolet light, and the self‐healing behavior can be recovered upon the irradiation of visible light. The utilizing of host–guest macro‐crosslinking approach manifests the as‐prepared hydrogel reversible and light‐switchable self‐healing property, which would broaden the potential applications of self‐healing polymers.

Surface‐initiated photo‐induced copper‐mediated radical polymerization is employed to graft a wide range of polyacrylate brushes from silicon substrates at extremely low catalyst concentrations. This is the first time that the controlled nature of the reported process is demonstrated via block copolymer formation and re‐initiation experiments. In addition to unmatched copper catalyst concentrations in the range of few ppb, film thicknesses up to almost 1 μm are achieved within only 1 h.

A thermo‐, photo‐ and chemoresponsive shape‐memory material is successfully prepared by introducing α‐cyclodextrin (αCD) and azobenzene (Azo) into a poly(acrylate acid)/alginate (PAA/Alg) network. The tri‐stimuli‐responsive formation/dissociation of αCD‐Azo acts as molecular switches freezing or increasing the molecular mobility. The resulting film herein can be processed into temporary shapes as needed and recovers its initial shape upon the application of light irradiation, heating, or chemical agent independently. Furthermore, the agar diffusion test suggests that the α‐CD‐Alg/Azo‐PAA has good biocompatibility for L929 fibroblast‐like cells.

Porous hollow silica particles (HSPs) are presented as new templates to control the product morphology in metallocene‐catalyzed olefin polymerization. By selectively immobilizing catalysts inside the micrometer‐sized porous hollow silica particles, the high hydraulic forces resulting from polymer growth within the confined geometries of the HSPs cause its supporting shell to break up from the inside. As the shape of the support is replicated during olefin polymerization, perfectly spherical product particles with very narrow size distribution can be achieved by using HSPs exhibiting a monomodal size distribution. Furthermore, the size of the obtained product particles can be controlled not only by the polymerization time but also by the size of the support material.

This study presents a new method to produce fluorescent particles. Established methods are based on the incorporation of conjugated dye molecules into dielectric polymer matrices or preparation of colloids, which are composed of fluorescent conjugated polymer. By contrast, this study presents a method where dielectric polyacrylonitrile is exposed to microwave radiation leading to an intramolecular cyclization reaction producing π‐conjugated segments, which fluoresce blue. During this conversion, the particles shrink in diameter but as an ensemble they retain their monodispersity. This work investigates the optimal reaction conditions and characterizes the optical properties.

This report demonstrates the electroless deposition of Ni onto micropatterns of poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) photografted to phthalimide‐terminated self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs). PAA is spin‐coated onto phthalimide SAMs and covered with a photomask. UV irradiation selectively binds PAA to exposed regions of the surface, allowing PAA on unexposed regions to be rinsed off. A Pd catalyst is then selectively adsorbed to regions of the surface where PAA is bound. The adsorbed catalyst selectively initiates Ni plating upon immersion of the substrate into a Ni(SO4) bath.

In this article, a versatile 2‐D conjugated polymer, PNDTP‐DPP, containing alkylphenyl substituted naphthodithiophene is synthesized and characterized. PNDTP‐DPP exhibits good solubility and crystallinity with a π−π stacking distance of ≈3.7 Å. Investigation of polymer solar cells (PSCs) and organic field‐effect transistors (OFET) demonstrates a promising power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.11% and a high hole mobility of up to 0.86 cm2 V–1 s–1, so this is one of the few examples of versatile polymers that show both good field‐effect mobility and PCE.

The synthesis of highly efficient two‐photon uncaging groups and their potential use in functional conjugated polymers for post‐polymerization modification are reported. Careful structural design of the employed nitrophenethyl caging groups allows to efficiently induce bond scission by a two‐photon process through a combination of exceptionally high two‐photon absorption cross‐sections and high reaction quantum yields. Furthermore, π‐conjugated polyfluorenes are functionalized with these photocleavable side groups and it is possible to alter their emission properties and solubility behavior by simple light irradiation. Cleavage of side groups leads to a turn‐on of the fluorescence while solubility of the π‐conjugated materials is drastically reduced.

In this research, the synthesis of boron‐ketoiminate‐containing polymers is reported with large molecular weights ( = 20 000) and their optical properties are examined by UV–vis absorption and photoluminescence spectrometries. It is shown that the polymers exhibit strong emission both in the solution and solid states (Φ PL,THF = 0.46–0.80, Φ PL,film = 0.13–0.38). These optical properties can be explained by a donor–acceptor interaction between the boron ketoiminate and the electron‐donating comonomer such as fluorene or bithiophene. Furthermore, in the solid states, their emission colors can be successfully tuned from blue to orange by the substituents on the nitrogen atom with the difference of the steric hindrance (λ PL,THF = 464–546 nm, λ PL,film = 486–604 nm).
