The possibility of monochromatization of a real beam of charged particles (possessing energy spread and angle divergence) as a result of Cherenkov interaction with laser radiation in a medium is shown. The refraction index of the medium, the Cherenkov angle and the intensity of the wave, necessary for this effect are determined by the initial parameters of the beam. For the real parameters of the beam of charged particles and the laser radiation the degree of monochromatization reaches several orders. A method of raising the monochromaticy of the charged particles of a beam is suggested.  相似文献

The Cherenkov effect is a well-known phenomenon and its properties are widely used in many fields of physics. However, some features of the polarization characteristics of Cherenkov radiation that appears when charged particles pass near azimuthally asymmetric, finite dielectric targets are still poorly studied. This problem is solved in this work. The polarization characteristics of Cherenkov radiation in the case of a rectangular dielectric screen are analyzed using the Stokes approach. Owing to the azimuthal asymmetry of the target, radiation acquires an elliptic polarization whose rotation direction and inclination angle depend both on the direction of radiation propagation and on the dielectric properties of a substance. The results demonstrate that the Cherenkov effect can be used to create sources of elliptically polarized radiation with the controlled direction of polarization rotation.  相似文献

The influence of the spatial distribution of electrons, atoms, and nuclei in condensed media on a medium’s susceptibility and on the conditions for the formation of short-wavelength Cherenkov radiation are considered. It is shown that taking into account the inhomogeneous (atomic and electronic) structure of material media in which fast charged particles travel leads to a change in the effective susceptibility and permittivity in the X-ray range, as compared with cases of model homogeneous media with the same average concentration of electrons. The influence of the distribution functions of electrons and nuclei in a target on the conditions for Cherenkov radiation generation and its parameters and on the threshold energy of fast charged particles required to generate such radiation is studied. It is shown that the function of the spatial distribution of electrons and nuclei in a target affects the conditions for generating laser radiation in the X- and λ-ray ranges (on the problem of X- and λ-ray lasers). The obtained results show that using the Fresnel approximation in the X-ray range is insufficiently justified and can lead to significant errors.  相似文献

A Cherenkov quartz detector possesses a high radiation resistance because of the radiation resistance of quartz fibers in which a light signal is formed and which are used to transfer signals to photodetectors. Owing to properties of Cherenkov radiation, such as the existence of a threshold with respect to the velocity of radiating charged particles and an instantaneous character of the radiation, this type of calorimeter is not sensitive to neutrons and the majority of radiative-decay products and generates a short signal within a narrow spatial region. In view of these special features of a Cherenkov quartz calorimeter, it is advantageous (with respect to other calorimetric methods) in detecting narrow jets of high-energy particles against the background of high-density energy fluxes, this being necessary, for example, in experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, which is presently under construction at CERN. The results obtained by measuring the radiation resistance of quartz fibers and the main features of a Cherenkov quartz calorimeter that were measured for prototypes are discussed in the present article.  相似文献

The dynamics of electrons in a multiwave Cherenkov oscillator are analyzed, based on the results from numerical modeling. It is shown that a flux of charged particles moving contrary to the initial beam is formed at the moment of generating a radiation pulse in an oscillator. Relativistic generalization of the Landau criterion is obtained which, in contrast to the classical Tamm-Frank and Ginzburg theories, determines the primary energy mechanism of emission of nonbremsstrahlung Cherenkov radiation. It is shown that Cherenkov radiation may correspond to a threshold energetically favorable conversion of the condensate (ultimately long-wavelength) elementary Bose perturbations of a medium into transverse Cherenkov photons emitted by the medium proper during its interaction with a sufficiently fast charged particle. The threshold conditions of emission are determined for a medium with an arbitrary refractive index n, including the case of isotropic plasma with n<1 for which the classical theory of Cherenkov radiation prohibits such direct and effective nonbremsstrahlung emission of these particular transverse high-frequency electromagnetic waves. It is established that these conditions of emission agree with the data of well-known experiments on the threshold for observation of Cherenkov radiation, whereas the classical theory only corresponds to the conditions of observation of the interference maximum of this radiation. The possibility of direct effective emission of nonbremsstrahlung Cherenkov radiation, not taken into account in the classical theory, is considered for many observed astrophysical phenomena (type III solar radio bursts, particle acceleration by radiation, etc.).  相似文献

The correlation effects in Cherenkov radiation associated with fluctuations of multiple charged accelerated ions in the medium are considered. The contribution of additional correlation into the radiation is determined by the ion charge mean-square deviation from its equilibrium value and defines the non-zero radiation yield as the threshold conditions are not fulfilled. The survey is devoted to methods of charged particle identification at high energies that are based on measurements of the angle of Cherenkov radiation (ring imaging Cherenkov counters — RICH), of time of flight (TOF) and propagation (TOP), and of ionization energy loss (dE/dx). The interaction of charged particle beam with non-linear “cubic” type media has been studied; the dielectric permeability of such media depends on the square strength of the electric field produced by the beam-excited wave. The processes of the Cherenkov excitation of the medium by a modulated definite current are investigated as well as the polarization of longitudinal oscillations of the medium excited by the current. The equations are obtained to determine the dependence of fields excited by the current on the amplitude of the exciting current. It is found that under certain circumstances (near the radiation cut-off) the conditions of Cherenkov radiation may be violated due to non-linearities of the medium and the particle radiation loss vanish. The amplification of longitudinal waves in an arbitrary isotropic medium with “cubic” non-linearity by a monoenergetic particle beam is studied when the frequencies of amplified oscillations are close to the resonance frequencies of the medium.  相似文献

Within the framework of classical electrodynamics we have developed a method of simulating the radiation spectra of relativistic particles in crystals, using computer tracking of the particle paths. We classify the characteristic types of paths and the corresponding radiation spectra of negatively charged particles moving along crystallographic axes. An analysis is made of how the fact that the time of motion along a characteristic path is finite and that the paths are not closed affects the shape of the radiation spectra. All of the characteristic features of the spectra are illustrated by calculations for 56-MeV electrons moving along the axes of crystals, <100> in the case of silicon and <110> in the case of diamond.  相似文献

Silicon Drift Detector is used to estimate production of knock-on electrons created by passage of 158 GeV/u fully stripped Pb ion through thick lead target. Analysed data were collected in 1995 during Pb+Pb run in WA98 heavy ion experiment at CERN SPS. Information from WA98 Cherenkov beam counter makes it possible to classify events according to number of additional Pb ions which have during detector's read-out time passed through the target without nuclear interaction. Events with one and none pile-up ion are used for statistical separation of knock-on electrons from all detected charged particles. Resulting inclusive spectra of knock-on electrons are compared with GEANT simulations and good agreement is found.  相似文献

Correlation phenomena occurring in Cherenkov radiation are considered which are related to fluctuations of the charge states of multiply charged accelerated ions in a medium. The additional correlation contribution to the radiation is determined by the root-mean-square deviation of the ion charge from its equilibrium value and is responsible for the nonzero radiation yield in the event that the threshold condition is not fulfilled. We have presented an investigation on the ring- and jet-like azimuthal angle substructures in the emission of secondary charged hadrons coming from 32S–Ag/Br interactions at 200 A GeV/c. Nuclear photographic emulsion technique has been employed to collect the experimental data. The presence of such substructures, their average behaviour, their size, and their position of occurrence have been examined. The experimental results have also been compared with the results simulated by Monte-Carlo method. The analysis strongly indicates the presence of ring- and jet-like structures in the experimental distributions of particles beyond statistical noise. The experimental results are in good agreement with I M Dremin idea, that the phenomenon is similar to the emission of Cherenkov electromagnetic radiation.  相似文献

Measurements of the secondary particle energy spectra in the Space Shuttle   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Measurements of the energy spectra of secondary particles produced by galactic cosmic rays and trapped protons due to the nuclear interactions of these particles with the Shuttle shielding provide a powerful tool for validating radiation transport codes. A code validated in this way can be used to better estimate the dose and dose equivalent to body organs, measurements that cannot be made directly. The principal cause of single event upsets in electronic devices in the region of the South Atlantic Anomaly is secondary particles, and even in the region of galactic cosmic radiation a significant fraction is produced by secondary particles. In this paper, we describe the first direct measurements of the energy spectra of secondary protons, deuterons, tritons, 3He and 4He produced by galactic cosmic rays inside the Space Shuttle using a charged particle spectrometer. A comparison of these spectra with radiation transport code HZETRN showed reasonably good agreement for secondary protons. However, the code seriously underestimated the flux of all other light ions. The code has been modified to include pick-up and knock-on processes. The modified code leads to good agreement for deuterons and 3He but not for other light ions. This revised code leads to about 10% higher dose equivalent than the original code under moderate shielding, if we assume that higher charge ion fluxes are correctly predicted by the model.  相似文献

In this paper, we present an experimental observation of coherent Cherenkov radiation in the millimeter wavelength range. Coherent Cherenkov radiation is generated by a 6.1-MeV bunched electron beam passing by dielectric targets (PTFE and paraffin). The characteristics of Cherenkov and diffraction radiation measured under the same conditions are compared. The experiment is carried out with the electron beam of the microtron at Tomsk Polytechnic University.  相似文献
