An asymmetric difunctional initiator 2‐phenyl‐2‐[(2,2,6,6 tetramethylpiperidino)oxy] ethyl 2‐bromo propanoate ( 1 ) was used for the synthesis of ABC‐type methyl methacrylate (MMA)‐tert‐butylacrylate (tBA)‐styrene (St) triblock copolymers via a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and stable free‐radical polymerization (SFRP). The ATRP‐ATRP‐SFRP or SFRP‐ATRP‐ATRP route led to ABC‐type triblock copolymers with controlled molecular weight and moderate polydispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.35). The block copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR. The retaining chain‐end functionality and the applying halide exchange afforded high blocking efficiency as well as maintained control over entire routes. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Vinyl‐conjugated monomer (methyl acrylate, MA) and allyl 2‐bromopropanoate (ABP)‐possessing unconjugated C?C and active C? Br bonds were polymerized via the Cu(0)‐mediated simultaneous chain‐ and step‐growth radical polymerization at ambient temperature using Cu(0) as catalyst, N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as ligand and dimethyl sulfoxide as solvent. The conversion was reached higher than 98% within 20 h. The obtained polymers showed block structure consisting of polyester and vinyl polymer moieties. The Cu(0)‐catalyzed simultaneous chain‐ and step‐growth radical polymerization mechanism was demonstrated by NMR, matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight, and GPC analyses. Furthermore, the obtained copolymers of MA and ABP were further modified with poly(N‐isopropylamide) through radical thiol‐ene “click” chemistry from the terminal double bond. The thermoresponsive behavior of this block copolymer was investigated. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2013 , 51, 3907–3916  相似文献

A non‐olefinic monomer, methyl 1‐bicyclobutanecarboxylate (MBC), was successfully polymerized by the controlled/“living” atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique, resulting in a well‐defined homopolymer, PMBC, with only cyclobutane ring units in the polymer chain. An AB block copolymer poly(methyl 1‐bicyclobutanecarboxylate)‐b‐polystyrene (PMBC‐b‐PS), having an all‐ring unit segment, was also synthesized with narrow polydispersity and designed number‐average molecular weight in addition to precise end groups. The 1H NMR spectra, glass‐transition temperature, and thermal stability of PMBC, PMBC‐b‐PS, and PS‐b‐PMBC were investigated. The experimental results showed that the cyclobutane rings in the two block polymers improved their thermal stability. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The controlled nitroxide‐mediated homopolymerization of 9‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐9H‐carbazole (VBK) and the copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with varying amounts of VBK were accomplished by using 10 mol % {tert‐butyl[1‐(diethoxyphosphoryl)‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl]amino} nitroxide relative to 2‐({tert‐butyl[1‐(diethoxyphosphoryl)‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl]amino}oxy)‐2‐methylpropionic acid (BlocBuilder?) in dimethylformamide at temperatures from 80 to 125 °C. As little as 1 mol % of VBK in the feed was required to obtain a controlled copolymerization of an MMA/VBK mixture, resulting in a linear increase in molecular weight versus conversion with a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw /Mn ≈ 1.3). Preferential incorporation of VBK into the copolymer was indicated by the MMA/VBK reactivity ratios determined: rVBK = 2.7 ± 1.5 and rMMA = 0.24 ± 0.14. The copolymers were found significantly “living” by performing subsequent chain extensions with a fresh batch of VBK and by 31P NMR spectroscopy analysis. VBK was found to be an effective controlling comonomer for NMP of MMA, and such low levels of VBK comonomer ensured transparency in the final copolymer. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: The living polymerization of N,N‐dimethylacrylamide was achieved by atom transfer radical polymerization catalyzed by copper chloride complexed with a new ligand, N,N′‐bis(pyridin‐2‐ylmethyl 3‐hexoxo‐3‐oxopropyl)ethane‐1,2‐diamine (BPED). With methyl 2‐chloropropionate as the initiator, the polymerization reached high conversions (> 90%) at 80 °C and 100 °C, producing polymers with very close to theoretical values and low polydispersity. The ligand, temperature, and copper halide strongly affected the activity and control of the polymerization.

A series of ferrocene‐based well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymers, consisting of hydrophilic poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] (PPEGMEA) backbone and hydrophobic poly(2‐acryloyloxyethyl ferrocenecarboxylate) (PAEFC) side chains were synthesized by successive single‐electron‐transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was prepared by SET‐LRP of PEGMEA macromonomer, and it was then treated with lithium di‐isopropylamide and 2‐bromopropionyl bromide at ?78 °C to give PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator. The targeted well‐defined graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.32) were synthesized via ATRP of AEFC initiated by PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator, and the molecular weights of the backbone and side chains were both controllable. The electro‐chemical behaviors of graft copolymers were studied by cyclic voltammetry, and it was found that graft copolymers were more difficult to be oxidized, and the reversibility of electrode process became less with raising the content of PAEFC segment. The effects of the preparation method, the length of hydrophobic PAEFC segment, and the initial water content on self‐assembly behavior of PPEGMEA‐g‐PAEFC graft copolymers in aqueous media were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The morphologies of micelles could transform from cylinders to spheres or rods with changing the preparation condition and the length of side chains. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three tetrafunctional bromoxanthate agents (Xanthate3‐Br, Xanthate2‐Br2, and Xanthate‐Br3) were synthesized. Initiative atom transfer radical polymerizations (ATRP) of styrene (St) or reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerizations of vinyl acetate (VAc) proceeded in a controlled manner in the presence of Xanthate3‐Br, Xanthate2‐Br2, or Xanthate‐Br3, respectively. The miktoarm star‐block copolymers containing polystyrene (PS) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) chains, PSnb‐PVAc4‐n (n = 1, 2, and 3), with controlled structures were successfully prepared by successive RAFT and ATRP chain‐extension experiments using VAc and St as the second monomers, respectively. The architecture of the miktoarm star‐block copolymers PSnb‐PVAc4‐n (n = 1, 2, and 3) were characterized by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR spectra. Furthermore, the results of the cleavage of PS3b‐PVAc and PVAc2b‐PS2 confirmed the structures of the obtained miktoarm star‐block copolymers. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of poly(tert‐butyl acrylate‐block‐vinyl acetate) copolymers using a combination of two living radical polymerization techniques, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, is reported. The use of two methods is due to the disparity in reactivity of the two monomers, viz. vinyl acetate is difficult to polymerize via ATRP, and a suitable RAFT agent that can control the polymerization of vinyl acetate is typically unable to control the polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate. Thus, ATRP was performed to make poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) containing a bromine end group. This end group was subsequently substituted with a xanthate moiety. Various spectroscopic methods were used to confirm the substitution. The poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) macro‐RAFT agent was then used to produce (tert‐butyl acrylate‐block‐vinyl acetate). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report here the successful functionalization of single‐walled carbon nanotubes with bioinspired sugar and phosphocholine polymeric structures via surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. The surface‐polymer‐coated carbon nanotubes have been systematically analyzed by Raman, infrared, ultraviolet–visible, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy, which give strong evidence of successful functionalization. The successful aqueous dispersion of the functionalized carbon nanotubes also indicates that functionalization has been achieved. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined amphiphilic triblock copolymers [polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether]‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (mPEG‐b‐PCL‐b‐PDMAEMA or abbreviated as mPEG‐b‐PCL‐b‐PDMA) were prepared by a combination of ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization. The chemical structures and compositions of these copolymers have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, and thermogravimetric analysis. The molecular weights of the triblock copolymers were obtained by calculating from 1H NMR spectra and gel permeation chromatography measurements. Subsequently, the self‐assembly behavior of these copolymers was investigated by fluorescence probe method and transmission electron microscopy, which indicated that these amphiphilic triblock copolymers possess distinct pH‐dependent critical aggregation concentrations and can self‐assemble into micelles or vesicles in PBS buffer solution, depending on the length of PDMA in the copolymer. Agarose gel retardation assays demonstrated that these cationic nanoparticles can effectively condense plasmid DNA. Cell toxicity tests indicated that these triblock copolymers displayed lower cytotoxicity than that of branched polyethylenimine with molecular weight of 25 kDa. In addition, in vitro release of Naproxen from these nanoparticles in pH buffer solutions was conducted, demonstrating that higher PCL content would result in the higher drug loading content and lower release rate. These biodegradable and biocompatible cationic copolymers have potential applications in drug and gene delivery. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The stable free radical polymerization (SFRP) of styrene, initiated with benzoyl peroxide in the presence of TEMPO, under bulk conditions, is demonstrated to proceed rapidly without the need for any rate enhancing additives such as camphorsulfonic acid, 2‐fluoro‐1‐methyl pyridinium p‐toluenesulfonate, or acetic anhydride. Monomer conversions as high as 70% can be achieved in 5 h or less while maintaining polydispersity indexes of 1.15. These results stand in stark contrast to earlier reactions that required 70 h to achieve similar conversions. This study demonstrates that the single largest factor governing the rates of polymerization is the molar concentration of excess TEMPO remaining in solution after initiation. A reduction in the TEMPO to BPO ratio is required when large amounts of BPO are used to target low molecular weight polystyrenes. However, when a lower molar amount of BPO is used to obtain high molecular weight polystyrenes, a higher TEMPO to BPO ratio is required. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined high oil‐absorption resin was successfully prepared via living radical polymerization on surface of polystyrene resin‐supported N‐chlorosulfonamide group utilizing methyl methacrylate and butyl methacrylate as monomers, ferric trichloride/iminodiacetic acid (FeCl3/IDA) as catalyst system, pentaerythritol tetraacrylate as crosslinker, and L ‐ascorbic acid as reducing agent. The polymerization proceeded in a “living” polymerization manner as indicated by linearity kinetic plot of the polymerization. Effects of crosslinker, catalyst, macroinitiator, reducing agent on polymerization and absorption property were discussed in detail. The chemical structure of sorbent was determined by FTIR spectrometry. The oil‐absorption resin shows a toluene absorption capacity of 21 g g?1. The adsorption of oil behaves as pseudo‐first‐order kinetic model rather than pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献

Isobornyl methacrylate (IBMA), a bulky hydrophobic methacrylate, undergoes very fast polymerization, in bulk, with Cu(I)Br/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA)/ethyl‐2‐bromoisobutyrate system, at ambient temperature. IBMA also undergoes a spontaneous initiator‐free polymerization, at ambient temperature, with Cu(I)Br/PMDETA catalytic system in dimethyl sulfoxide–water mixtures. The rate of the polymerization is seen to increase with the water content up to 80 mol % of water. A possible intervention of air in initiation is proposed. The active Cu(0) formed by the disproportionation of Cu(I) species in aqueous medium probably plays a vital role for a possible air‐initiation of IBMA via single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) mechanism. A high tolerance level to water under SET‐LRP conditions is demonstrated. The poly(IBMA) samples obtained exhibit low molecular weight distributions (1.1–1.3). Similar behavior was not observed with other common methacrylates such as methyl methacrylate, t‐butyl methacrylate, cyclohexyl methacrylate, and benzyl methacrylate. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined double hydrophilic graft copolymers containing poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] (PPEGMEA) backbone and poly[poly(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether methacrylate] (PPEGEEMA) side chains were synthesized by the combination of single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was first prepared by SET‐LRP of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate macromonomer using CuBr/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine as catalytic system. The obtained comb copolymer was treated with lithium diisopropylamide and 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to give PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator. Finally, PPEGMEA‐g‐PPEGEEMA graft copolymers were synthesized by ATRP of poly(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether methacrylate macromonomer using PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator via the grafting‐from route. The molecular weights of both the backbone and the side chains were controllable and the molecular weight distributions kept narrow (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.20). This kind of double hydrophilic copolymer was found to be stimuli‐responsive to both temperature and ion (0.3 M Cl? and SO). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic diblock copolymer polycaprolactone‐block‐poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PCL‐b‐PGMA) was synthesized via enzymatic ring‐opening polymerization (eROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Methanol first initiated eROP of ?‐caprolactone (?‐CL) in the presence of biocatalyst Novozyme‐435 under anhydrous conditions. The resulting monohydroxyl‐terminated polycaprolactone (PCL–OH) was subsequently converted to a bromine‐ended macroinitiator (PCL–Br) for ATRP by esterification with α‐bromopropionyl bromide. PCL‐b‐PGMA diblock copolymers were synthesized in a subsequent ATRP of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). A kinetic analysis of ATRP indicated a living/controlled radical process. The macromolecular structures were characterized for PCL–OH, PCL–Br, and the block copolymers by means of nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, and infrared spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction analyses indicated that the copolymer composition (?‐CL/GMA) had a great influence on the thermal properties. The well‐defined, amphiphilic diblock copolymer PCL‐b‐PGMA self‐assembled into nanoscale micelles in aqueous solutions, as investigated by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) represents a robust and versatile method for the rapid synthesis of macromolecules with defined architecture. The present article describes the polymerization of methyl methacrylate by SET‐LRP in protic solvent mixtures. Herein, the polymerization process was catalyzed by a straightforward Cu(0)wire/Me6‐TREN catalyst while initiation was obtained by toluenesulfonyl chloride. All experiments were conducted at 50 °C and the living polymerization was demonstrated by kinetic evaluation of the SET‐LRP. The process follows first order kinetic until all monomer is consumed which was typically achieved within 4 h. The molecular weight increased linearly with conversion and the molecular weight distributions were very narrow with Mw/Mn ~ 1.1. Detailed investigations of the polymer samples by MALDI‐TOF confirmed that no termination took place and that the chain end functionality is retained throughout the polymerization process. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 1,3‐dichloro‐tetra‐n‐butyl‐distannoxane, which contains Sn? Cl bonds, was used as a novel initiator for atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene in bulk. Some interesting results that were thought to be related to the characteristics of the 1,3‐dihalotetra‐alkyl‐distannoxanes had been obtained. The concentration of the 1,3‐dichlorotetra‐n‐butyl‐distannoxane in the bulk solution of styrene was confirmed to be an important factor for the different results of the polymerization. The corrected theoretical molecular weights, which were based on the proposed mechanism, accorded with the GPC results very well. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The monomer N‐vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) undergoes side reactions in the presence of R group functional xanthates and impurities. The fate of the monomer NVP and a selection of six O‐ethyl xanthates during xanthate‐mediated polymerization were studied via NMR spectroscopy. A high number of by‐products were identified. Significant side reactions affecting NVP include the formation of an unsaturated dimer and hydration products in bulk or in solution in C6D6. In addition, the xanthate adjacent to a NVP unit was found to undergo elimination at moderate temperature (60–70 °C), resulting in unsaturated species and the formation of new xanthate species. The presence of the chlorinated compound α‐chlorophenyl acetic acid, ethyl ester, a precursor in the synthesis of the xanthate S‐(2‐ethyl phenylacetate) O‐ethyl xanthate, resulted in a dramatic increase in the rate of side reactions such as unsaturated dimer formation and a high ratio of unsaturated chain ends. The conditions for the occurrence of such side reactions are discussed in this article, with relevance to increasing the control over the polymerization kinetics, endgroup functionality, and control over the molar mass distribution. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The first example of well‐controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of a permanently charged anionic acrylamide monomer is reported. ATRP of sodium 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropanesulfonate (NaAMPS) was achieved with ethyl 2‐chloropropionate (ECP) as an initiator and the CuCl/CuCl2/tris(2‐dimethylaminoethyl)amine (Me6TREN) catalytic system. The polymerizations were carried out in 50:50 (v/v) N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF)/water mixtures at 20 °C. Linear first‐order kinetic plots up to a 92% conversion for a target degree of polymerization of 50 were obtained with [ECP]/[CuCl]/[CuCl2]/[Me6TREN] = 1:1:1:2 and [AMPS] = 1 M. The molecular weight increased linearly with the conversion in good agreement with the theoretical values, and the polydispersities decreased with increasing conversion, reaching a lower limit of 1.11. The living character of the polymerization was confirmed by chain‐extension experiments. Block copolymers with N,N‐dimethylacrylamide and N‐isopropylacrylamide were also prepared. The use of a DMF/water mixed solvent should make possible the synthesis of new amphiphilic ionic block copolymers without the use of protecting group chemistry. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
