The adsorption energies of intermediates in CO methanation on the modified Ni3Al(1 1 1) surface and the Ni(1 1 1) surface are calculated using density functional theory. A microkinetic analysis based on the calculated adsorption energies is performed to explain the different kinetics of CO methanation catalyzed by Ni3Al and Ni powders. The electronic structures of different atoms on the modified Ni3Al surface are also presented, and correlate well with the adsorption energies and geometries.  相似文献

First-principles calculations were performed to study the properties of O adsorption on Ni3Al (0 0 1), (0 1 1), and (1 1 1) surfaces using the Cambridge serial total package (CASTEP) code. Stable adsorption sites are identified. The atomic and electronic structures and adsorption energies are predicted. The adsorption sites for O on the Ni3Al (0 0 1) surface are at the 2Ni–2Al fourfold hollow site, whereas O prefers to adsorb at the Ni–Al bridge site on (0 1 1) surface and 2Ni–Al threefold hollow site on (1 1 1) surface. It is found that O shows the strongest affinity for Al and the state of O is the most stabilized when O adsorbs on (0 0 1) surface, while the affinity of O for Al on (0 1 1) surface is weaker than (0 0 1) surface, and (1 1 1) surface is the weakest. The stronger O and Al affinity indicates more stable Al2O3 when oxidized. The experiment has shown that the oxidation resistance of single crystal superalloy in different orientations improves in the order of (1 1 1), (0 1 1), and (0 0 1) surface, suggesting that the oxidation in different crystallographic orientations may be related to the affinity of O for Al in the surface.  相似文献

Surface structures and electronic properties of hypophosphite, H2PO2, molecularly adsorbed on Ni(1 1 1) and Cu(1 1 1) surfaces are investigated in this work by density functional theory at B3LYP/6-31++g(d, p) level. We employ a four-metal-atom cluster as the simplified model for the surface and have fully optimized the geometry and orientation of H2PO2 on the metal cluster. Six stable orientations have been discovered on both Ni (1 1 1) and Cu (1 1 1) surfaces. The most stable orientation of H2PO2 was found to have its two oxygen atoms interact the surface with two PO bonds pointing downward. Results of the Mulliken population analysis showed that the back donation from 3d orbitals of the transition metal substrate to the unfilled 3d orbital of the phosphorus atom in H2PO2 and 4s orbital's acceptance of electron donation from one lone pair of the oxygen atom in H2PO2 play very important roles in the H2PO2 adsorption on the transition metals. The averaged electron configuration of Ni in Ni4 cluster is 4s0.634p0.023d9.35 and that of Cu in Cu4 cluster is 4s1.004p0.033d9.97. Because of this subtle difference of electron configuration, the adsorption energy is larger on the Ni surface than on the Cu surface. The amount of charge transfers due to above two donations is larger from H2PO2 to the Ni surface than to the Cu surface, leading to a more positively charged P atom in NinH2PO2 than in CunH2PO2. These results indicate that the phosphorus atom in NinH2PO2 complex is easier to be attacked by a nucleophile such as OH and subsequent oxidation of H2PO2 can take place more favorably on Ni substrate than on Cu substrate.  相似文献

To elucidate the initial growth of metal on oxide surface, we studied adsorption of small nickel clusters, Nin (n = 1-5), on MgO(0 0 1) surface using first-principles method based on density-functional theory. It was found that the preferential adsorption site for an isolated Ni atom is directly above the surface oxygen atom. A strong covalent bond with partial ionic character is formed between the Ni adatom and the surface oxygen atom. Various structures were considered for the Nin isomers and 3D structures were found to be energetically more stable than 2D structures for clusters of more than two atoms. For the 2D clusters, metal-metal bonds prevail over metal-substrate bonds with increasing Ni coverage. The calculated work function and ionization energy were found to vary with Ni coverage which is attributed to the change of the surface dipole moment upon metal adsorption, while the evolution of Schottky barrier height at the initial growth stage is dominated by the adatom-induced gap states.  相似文献

We have studied the adsorption of Pb on the Rh(1 0 0) and (1 1 0) surfaces by photoemission and low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and tested the chemical properties by adsorption of CO. Pb forms two distinct c(2 × 2) phases on Rh(1 0 0), according to the temperature of the substrate. The phase formed below about 570-620 K, denoted α-c(2 × 2), reduces the coverage of adsorbed CO but does not affect the valence band spectrum of the molecule. The phase formed above this temperature, denoted β-c(2 × 2), also reduces the coverage of adsorbed CO but the valence band spectrum of the adsorbed CO is strongly affected. The two phases are also characterised by a slightly different binding energy of the Pb 5d5/2 level, 17.54 eV for the α phase and 17.70 for the β phase. The Pb/Rh(1 1 0) surface shows two ordered Pb induced phases, c(2 × 2) and p(3 × 1). CO adsorbs on the first with reduced heat of adsorption and with a valence band spectrum that is strongly altered with respect to CO adsorbed on clean Rh(1 1 0), but does not adsorb on the p(3 × 1) structure at 300 K. We compare the present results with previous results from related systems.  相似文献

Following the experimental work of Groudeva-Zotova et al. [S. Groudeva-Zotova, D. Elefant, R. Kaltofen, D. Tietjen, J. Thomas, V. Hoffmann, C.M. Schneider, J. Magn. Magn. Mater. 263 (2003) 57] where the magnetic and structural characteristics of a bi-layer NiMn-Co exchange biasing systems was investigated, density functional calculations with generalized gradient corrections were performed on (Mn0.5Ni0.5)n ordered alloy on Co(0 0 1) and one Mn1−xNix monolayer on Co(1 1 1). For the Mn0.5Ni0.5 monolayer on Co(0 0 1), magnetic moments per surface atom of 0.65 μB and 3.76 μB were obtained for Ni and Mn, respectively. Those magnetic moments are aligned parallel to the total moment of Co(0 0 1). A complex behavior of the Mn moment in dependence of the thickness “n” is obtained for (Mn0.5Ni0.5)n on Co(0 0 1). Investigations on Mn1−xNix monolayer on Co(1 1 1) have shown that the crystallographic orientation does not modify significantly neither the magnetic moments of Mn and Ni atoms nor their ferromagnetic coupling with the Co(1 1 1) substrate, except for x = 0.66. For x = 0.66 the Mn sub-lattice presents an antiferromagnetic coupling leading to a quenching of the Ni magnetic moment.  相似文献

The adsorption properties of CO on experimentally verified stepped Pt3Sn(1 0 2) surface were investigated using quantum mechanical calculations. The two possible terminations of Pt3Sn(1 0 2) were generated and on these terminations all types of possible adsorption sites were determined. The adsorption energies and geometries of the CO molecule for all those sites were calculated. The most favorable sites for adsorption were determined as the short bridge site on the terrace of pure-Pt row of the mixed-atom-ending termination, atop site at the step-edge of the pure row of pure-Pt-ending termination and atop site at the step-edge of the pure-Pt row of the mixed-atom-ending termination. The results were compared with those for similar sites on the flat Pt3Sn(1 1 0) surface considering the fact that Pt3Sn(1 0 2) has terraces with (1 1 0) orientation. The LDOS analysis of bare sites clearly shows that there are significant differences between the electronic properties of Pt atoms at stepped Pt3Sn(1 0 2) surface and the electronic properties of Pt atoms at flat (1 1 0) surface, which leads to changes in the CO bonding energies of these Pt atoms. Adsorption on Pt3Sn(1 0 2) surface is in general stronger compared to that on Pt3Sn(1 1 0) surface. The difference in adsorption strength of similar sites on these two surface terminations is a result of stepped structure of Pt3Sn(1 0 2). The local density of states (LDOS) of the adsorbent Pt and C of adsorbed CO was utilized. The LDOS of the surface metal atoms with CO-adsorbed atop and of their bare state were compared to see the effect of CO chemisorption on the electron density distribution of the corresponding Pt atom. The downward shift in energy peak in the LDOS curves as well as changes in the electron densities of the corresponding energy levels indicate the orbital mixing between CO molecular orbitals and metal d-states. The present study showed that the adsorption strength of the sites has a direct relation with their LDOS profiles.  相似文献

The characteristics of Ni/Si(1 0 0) solid-state reaction with Al addition (Ni/Al/Si(1 0 0), Ni/Al/Ni/Si(1 0 0) and Al/Ni/Si(1 0 0)) is studied. Ni and Al films were deposited on Si(1 0 0) substrate by ion beam sputtering. The solid-state reaction between metal films and Si was performed by rapid thermal annealing. The sheet resistance of the formed silicide film was measured by four-point probe method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) was employed to detect the phases in the silicide film. The Auger electron spectroscopy was applied to reveal the element profiles in depth. The influence of Al addition on the Schottky barrier heights of the formed silicide/Si diodes was investigated by current-voltage measurements. The experimental results show that NiSi forms even with the addition of Al, although the formation temperature correspondingly changes. It is revealed that Ni silicidation is accompanied with Al diffusion in Ni film toward the film top surface and Al is the dominant diffusion species in Ni/Al system. However, no NixAly phase is detected in the films and no significant Schottky barrier height modulation by the addition of Al is observed.  相似文献

In the present work the ASED-MO method is applied to study the adsorption of cyclopentadienyl anion on a Ni(1 1 1) surface. The adsorption with the centre of the aromatic ring placed above the hollow position has been identified to be energetically the most favourable. The aromatic ring remains almost flat, the H atoms are tilted 17° away from the metal surface. We modelled the metal surface by a two-dimensional slab of finite thickness, with an overlayer of c-C5H5, one c-C5H5 per nine surface Ni atoms. The c-C5H5 molecule is attached to the surface with its five C atoms bonding mainly with three Ni atoms. The NiNi bond in the underlying surface and the CC bonds of c-C5H5 are weakened upon adsorption. We found that the band of Ni 5dz2 orbitals plays an important role in the bonding between c-C5H5 and the surface, as do the Ni 6s and 6pz bands.  相似文献

In this paper we describe the alloying process of ultra-thin Al layers (below 8 × 1015 Al/cm2) deposited on Ni(1 1 1). For this purpose Auger electron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction, and ion beam analysis-channelling measurements have been performed in situ in an ultra-high vacuum chamber. Al deposits formed at low temperature (about 130 K) are strained defective crystalline layers retaining the substrate orientation. Alloying takes place, with very progressive Ni enrichment, in a very broad temperature range between 250 K and 570 K. This feature shows that diffusion of the alloy species is more and more difficult when the Ni concentration increases. At 570 K a crystallographically and chemically ordered Ni3Al phase is formed, and its order continuously improves upon annealing, up to 750 K. We have shown by ion beam methods that this alloy is three-dimensional, extending up to 16 (1 1 1) planes for the thickest deposits. The Ni3Al phase can also be obtained directly by Al deposition at 750 K, but its crystalline quality is lower and the layer is probably formed of grains elongated along 〈1 1 −2〉 directions. The Al content of the thin Ni3Al layers formed mostly dissolves in the bulk above 800 K. However a small amount of Al remains segregated at the Ni crystal surface.  相似文献

This paper describes the second part of a study devoted to the growth of thin Ni-Al alloys after deposition of Al on Ni(1 1 1). In the previous paper [S. Le Pévédic, D. Schmaus, C. Cohen, Surf. Sci. 600 (2006) 565] we have described the results obtained for ultra-thin Al deposits, leading, after annealing at 750 K, to an epitaxial layer of Ni3Al(1 1 1). In the present paper we show that this regime is only observed for Al deposits smaller than 8 × 1015 Al/cm2 and we describe the results obtained for Al deposits exceeding this critical thickness, up to 200 × 1015 Al/cm2. Al deposition was performed at low temperature (around 130 K) and the alloying process was followed in situ during subsequent annealing, by Auger electron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction and ion beam analysis-channeling measurements, in an ultra-high vacuum chamber connected to a Van de Graaff accelerator. We evidence the formation, after annealing at 750 K, of a crystallographically and chemically well-ordered NiAl(1 1 0) layer (whose thickness depends on the deposited Al amount), over a Ni3Al “interfacial” layer (whose thickness—about 18 (1 1 1) planes—is independent of the deposited Al amount). The NiAl overlayer is composed of three variants, at 120° from each other in the surface plane, in relation with the respective symmetries of NiAl(1 1 0) and Ni3Al(1 1 1). The NiAl layer is relaxed (the lattice parameters of cc-B2 NiAl and fcc-L12 Ni3Al differ markedly), and we have determined its epitaxial relationship. In the case of the thickest alloyed layer formed the results concerning the structure of the NiAl layer have been confirmed and refined by ex situ X-ray diffraction and information on its grain size has been obtained by ex situ Atomic Force Microscopy. The kinetics of the alloying process is complex. It corresponds to an heterogeneous growth leading, above the thin Ni3Al interfacial layer, to a mixture of Al and NiAl over the whole Al film, up to the surface. The atomic diffusion is very limited in the NiAl phase that forms, and thus the progressive enrichment in Ni of the Al film, i.e. of the mean Ni concentration, becomes slower and slower. As a consequence, alloying is observed to take place in a very broad temperature range between 300 K and 700 K. For annealing temperatures above 800 K, the alloyed layer is decomposed, Al atoms diffusing in the bulk of the substrate.  相似文献

The initial growth and alloy formation of ultrathin Co films deposited on 1 ML Ni/Pt(1 1 1) were investigated by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). A sequence of samples of dCo Co/1 ML Ni/Pt(1 1 1) (dCo = 1, 2, and 3 ML) were prepared at room temperature, and then heated up to investigate the diffusion process. The Co and Ni atoms intermix at lower annealing temperature, and Co-Ni intermixing layer diffuses into the Pt substrate to form Ni-Co-Pt alloys at higher annealing temperature. The diffusion temperatures are Co coverage dependent. The evolution of UPS with annealing temperatures also shows the formation of surface alloys. Some interesting LEED patterns of 1 ML Co/1 ML Ni/Pt(1 1 1) show the formation of ordered alloys at different annealing temperature ranges. Further studies in the Curie temperature and concentration analysis, show that the ordered alloys corresponding to different LEED patterns are NixCo1−xPt and NixCo1−xPt3. The relationship between the interface structure and magnetic properties was investigated.  相似文献

The room temperature (RT) adsorption and thermal evolution of cis- and trans-dichloroethylene (DCE) and their structural isomer, iso-DCE, on Ni(1 0 0) have been studied by vibrational electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and thermal desorption spectrometry (TDS). For RT adsorption, both cis- and trans-DCE exhibit very similar EELS features that are different from those found for iso-DCE. These differences indicate the formation of different fragments upon RT adsorption. In particular, the primary adspecies for cis- and trans-DCE are ethane-1,1,2,2-tetrayl () and acetylide-like () adspecies along with a small amount of chlorovinyl adspecies, while ethylylidyne () is the more plausible adspecies for iso-DCE. The differences in the adstructures upon dissociative adsorption at RT underline the important isomeric effects. Furthermore, both AES and TDS results for all three DCE isomers show that most of the Cl atoms produced by dechlorination remain on the surface and its surface concentration remains unchanged upon annealing the samples above 500 K. Upon further annealing to 550 K, the EELS spectra of all three isomers exhibit a broad feature near 1600 cm−1, which suggests the formation of carbon clusters on the surface. The presence of surface Cl atoms therefore appears to prevent the CC bond cleavage during thermal evolution of the adspecies on Ni(1 0 0).  相似文献

The growth and oxidation of a thin film of Ni3Al grown on Ni(1 0 0) were studied using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). At 300 K, a 12 Å thick layer of aluminium was deposited on a Ni(1 0 0) surface and subsequently annealed to 1150 K resulting in a thin film of Ni3Al which grows with the (1 0 0) plane parallel to the (1 0 0) surface of the substrate. Oxidation at 300 K of Ni3Al/Ni(1 0 0) until saturation leads to the growth of an aluminium oxide layer consisting of different alumina phases. By annealing up to 1000 K, a well ordered film of the Al2O3 film is formed which exhibits in the EEL spectra Fuchs-Kliewer phonons at 420, 640 and 880 cm−1. The LEED pattern of the oxide shows a twelvefold ring structure. This LEED pattern is explained by two domains with hexagonal structure which are rotated by 90° with respect to each other. The lattice constant of the hexagonal structure amounts to ∼2.87 Å. The EELS data and the LEED pattern suggest that the γ-Al2O3 phase is formed which grows with the (1 1 1) plane parallel to the Ni(1 0 0) surface.  相似文献

Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) were applied to investigate the segregation of aluminum atoms on a Cu-9 at.% Al(1 1 1) surface. We observed that the Al concentration in the top layer ranged between about 9 and 36 at.% after the sample we used was annealed at different temperatures. The phenomenon of Al atoms segregating on the surfaces was explained well by considering the diffusion length of Al atoms in bulk Cu. LEED measurements showed that R30° structures grew as the concentration of Al atoms increased. The segregation phenomena on surfaces resulted in a stable two-dimensional Cu67Al33 alloy phase in the top layer.  相似文献

Ethylene adsorption was studied by use of DFT/B3LYP with basis set 6-31G(d,p) in Gaussian’03 software. It was found that ethylene has adsorbed molecularly on all clusters with π adsorption mode. Relative energy values were calculated to be −50.86 kcal/mol, −20.48 kcal/mol, −32.44 kcal/mol and −39.27 kcal/mol for Ni13 nanocluster, Ni10(1 1 1), Ni13(1 0 0) and Ni10(1 1 0) surface cluster models, respectively. Ethylene adsorption energy is inversely proportional to Ni coordination number when Ni10(1 1 1), Ni13(1 0 0) and Ni10(1 1 0) cluster models and Ni13 nanocluster are compared with each other.  相似文献

The interaction of CO with structurally well-defined PtxRuy surface alloys supported on Ru(0 0 0 1) was investigated by thermal desorption spectroscopy and infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy. The surface composition and the distribution of the surface atoms were controlled by high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy. On these surfaces, which have a nearly random distribution of the two surface species, the adsorption (and desorption) of CO is strongly modified compared to the pure elemental surfaces, by strain effects and electronic ligand effects. CO adsorbs exclusively in a linear configuration on Pt and Ru atoms for all surfaces investigated. The adsorption energy of CO is lowered on the alloy surfaces with respect to both Pt(1 1 1) and Ru(0 0 0 1), similar as for pseudomorphic monolayer Pt films. For both Pt and Ru sites the adsorption strength decreases with increasing Pt concentration.  相似文献

The regular CO overlayers at coverage θ = 1/3 adsorbed on the (0 0 0 1) surface of hcp Co and (1 1 1) surface of fcc Co are studied by first-principles density-functional theory with the exchange-correlation component in the PBE form. Adsorption in atop, bridge, and three-fold hcp or fcc position are considered. The adsorption energies, CO stretching frequencies, geometry, work function, and local magnetic moments are studied, and, when possible, compared with experimental or theoretical data. Particularly, we show that the recently proposed correction to adsorption energy of CO prefers correctly the atop adsorption site, whereas the remaining sites are almost degenerate in energy. The CO molecule lowers magnetization on neighbouring Co atoms, and the effect decreases with the adsorption site coordination. We show, however, that this trend is not the result of the different C-Co separation at different adsorption sites. A very small magnetic moment appears on CO that couples antiferromagnetically to Co. Most results are very similar for the Co(0 0 0 1) and Co(1 1 1) surfaces.  相似文献

Density functional theory (DFT) for generalized gradient approximation calculations has been used to study the adsorption of atomic oxygen and water molecules on Ni(1 1 1) and different kind of Ni-Cr(1 1 1) surfaces. The fcc hollow site is energetically the most favorable for atomic oxygen adsorption and on top site is favorable for water adsorption. The Ni-Cr surface has the highest absorption energy for oxygen at 6.86 eV, followed by the hcp site, whereas the absorption energy is 5.56 eV for the Ni surface. The Ni-O bond distance is 1.85 Å for the Ni surface. On the other hand, the result concerning the Ni-Cr surface implies that the bond distances are 1.93-1.95 Å and 1.75 Å for Ni-O and Cr-O, respectively. The surface adsorption energy for water on top site for two Cr atom substituted Ni-Cr surface is 0.85 eV. Oxygen atoms prefer to bond with Cr rather than Ni atoms. Atomic charge analysis demonstrates that charge transfer increases due to the addition of Cr. Moreover, a local density of states (LDOS) study examines the hybridization occurring between the metal d orbital and the oxygen p orbital; the bonding is mainly ionic, and water bonds weakly in both cases.  相似文献

The adsorption of CO on Au(3 1 0) and Au(3 2 1) was studied using a combination of thermal desorption spectroscopy and high resolution core level photoemission spectroscopy. These vicinal Au surfaces both have 6-fold coordinated atoms at the step edges but have a different terrace structure. The CO adsorption behavior was found to be very similar for both surfaces. Three different desorption peaks due to chemisorbed CO were identified, which desorb around 100 K(α), 120 K(β) and 180 K(γ), respectively. The C1s and O1s spectra of the chemisorbed CO show a complex shake-up structure. Our experimental results indicate that CO only adsorbs on the step atoms. The different desorption peaks are explained by substrate-mediated long-range interactions between the adsorbates. Comparison with literature results shows that the CO adsorption energy is not only dependent on the coordination number of the Au atoms, but that the exact geometrical structure of the surface also plays a role.  相似文献
