One basic principle regulating self-assembly is associated with the asymmetry of constituent building blocks or packing models. Using asymmetry to manipulate molecular-level devices and hierarchical functional materials is a promising topic in materials sciences and supramolecular chemistry. Here, exemplified by recent major achievements in chiral hierarchical self-assembly, we show how chirality may be utilized in the design, construction and evolution of highly ordered and complex chiral nanostructures. We focus on how unique functions can be developed by the exploitation of chiral nanostructures instead of single basic units. Our perspective on the future prospects of chiral nanostructures via the hierarchical self-assembly strategy is also discussed.

This review shows how chirality may be used for the design, construction and evolution of higher ordered and complex chiral nanostructures through hierarchical self-assembly.  相似文献

Fabrication of chiral materials and revealing the mechanisms involved in their formation are crucial issues in scientific research. The combination of cooperative self-assembly routes and the chiral templating process favors the formation of inorganic chiral materials with highly ordered mesostructures. This tutorial review highlights the recent research on chiral mesoporous silica (CMS) of hierarchical helical constructions transcribed from organic templates. The rules and mechanisms involved in the synthesis of CMS and related materials, especially the novel expression of chirality and imprinting of helical micellar superstructure by the functional groups immobilized on the mesopore surface, provide us with a deeper insight into the chiral self-assembly process and new strategies for the design and application of chiral materials. This review is addressed to researchers and students interested in chiral chemistry, supramolecular chemistry and mesoporous materials (53 references).  相似文献

The precise control over hierarchical self-assembly of superstructures relying on the elaboration of multiple noncovalent interactions between basic building blocks is both elusive and highly desirable. We herein report a terpyridine-based metallo-cage T with a tetrahedral motif and utilized it as an efficient building block for the controlled hierarchical self-assembly of superstructures in response to different halide ions. Initially, the hierarchical superstructure of metallo-cage T adopted a hexagonal close-packed structure. By adding Cl/Br or I, drastically different hierarchical superstructures with highly-tight hexagonal packing or graphite-like packing arrangements, respectively, have been achieved. These unusual halide-ion-triggered hierarchical structural changes resulted in quite distinct intermolecular channels, which provided new insights into the mechanism of three-dimensional supramolecular aggregation and crystal growth based on macromolecular construction. In addition, the chiral induction of the metallo-cage T can be realized with the addition of chiral anions, which stereoselectively generated either PPPP- or MMMM-type enantiomers.  相似文献

The construction of chiral superstructures through the self-assembly of non-chiral polymers usually relies on the interplay of multiple non-covalent bonds, which is significantly limited by the memory ability of induced chirality. Although the introduction of covalent crosslinking can undoubtedly enhance the stability of chiral superstructures, the concurrent strong constraining effect hinders the application of chirality-smart materials. To address this issue, we have made a first attempt at the reversible fixation of supramolecular chirality by introducing dynamic covalent crosslinking into the chiral self-assembly of side-chain polymers. After chiral induction, the reversible [2+2] cycloaddition reaction of the cinnamate group in the polymer chains can be further controlled by light to manipulate inter-chain crosslinking and decrosslinking. Based on this photo-programmable and dynamic chiral fixation strategy, a novel pattern-embedded storage mechanism of chiral polymeric materials was established for the first time.  相似文献

Introduction of chirality into a supramolecular self-assembly system plays an indispensable role in attaining specific molecular recognition ability. Herein, a chiral anticancer drug 5′-deoxy-5-fluorouridine (5′DFU) was explored for inducing the self-assembly of a cationic perylene diimide derivative containing boronic acid groups (PDI-PBA) into a highly ordered right-handed helical structure. As a result, PDI-PBA exhibited a molecular recognition ability towards 5′DFU among other cis-diols and anticancer drugs. With the help of a dynamic covalent bond and favorable hydrogen-bonding interactions, chirality transfer from chiral 5′DFU to achiral PDI-PBA breaks down the strong π–π stacking of PDI-PBA and makes it reorganize into highly ordered helical supramolecular structures. This work provides an insight into chiral anticancer drug tuning interactions of π-chromophores and the inducement of hierarchical self-assembly to achieve specific molecular recognition.  相似文献

Helical superstructures are widely observed in nature, in synthetic polymers, and in supramolecular assemblies. Controlling the chirality (the handedness) of dynamic helical superstructures of molecular and macromolecular systems by external stimuli is a challenging task, but is of great fundamental significance with appealing morphology‐dependent applications. Light‐driven chirality inversion in self‐organized helical superstructures (i.e. cholesteric, chiral nematic liquid crystals) is currently in the limelight because inversion of the handedness alters the chirality of the circularly polarized light that they selectively reflect, which has wide potential for application. Here we discuss the recent developments toward inversion of the handedness of cholesteric liquid crystals enabled by photoisomerizable chiral molecular switches or motors. Different classes of chiral photoresponsive dopants (guests) capable of conferring light‐driven reversible chirality inversion of helical superstructures fabricated from different nematic hosts are discussed. Rational molecular designs of chiral molecular switches toward endowing handedness inversion to the induced helical superstructures of cholesteric liquid crystals are highlighted. This Review is concluded by throwing light on the challenges and opportunities in this emerging frontier, and it is expected to provide useful guidelines toward the development of self‐organized soft materials with stimuli‐directed chirality inversion capability and multifunctional host–guest systems.  相似文献

Here, we report the mechanisms of chiral transfer at various length scales in the self-assembly of enantiomeric chiral block copolymers (BCPs*). We show the evolution of homochirality from molecular chirality into phase chirality in the self-assembly of the BCPs*. The chirality of the molecule in the BCP* is identified from circular dichroism (CD) spectra, while the handedness of the helical conformation in the BCP* is determined from a split-type Cotton effect in vibrational circular dichroism spectra. Microphase separation of the BCP* is exploited to form a helical (H*) phase, and the handedness of helical nanostructure in the BCP* is directly visualized from transmission electron microscopy tomography. As examined by CD and fluorescence experiments, significant induced CD signals and a bathochromic shift of fluorescence emission for the achiral perylene moiety as a chemical junction of the BCPs* can be found while the concentration of the BCPs* in toluene solution is higher than the critical micelle concentration, suggesting a twisting and shifting mechanism initiating from the microphase-separated interface of the BCPs* leading to formation of the H* phase from self-assembly.  相似文献

We present the synthesis and self-assembly of a chiral bis(urea) amphiphile and show that chirality offers a remarkable level of control towards different morphologies. Upon self-assembly in water, the molecular-scale chiral information is translated to the mesoscopic level. Both enantiomers of the amphiphile self-assemble into chiral twisted ribbons with opposite handedness, as supported by Cryo-TEM and circular dichroism (CD) measurements. The system presents thermo-responsive aggregation behavior and combined transmittance measurements, temperature-dependent UV, CD, TEM, and micro-differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) show that a ribbon-to-vesicles transition occurs upon heating. Remarkably, chirality allows easy control of morphology as the self-assembly into distinct aggregates can be tuned by varying the enantiomeric excess of the amphiphile, giving access to flat sheets, helical ribbons, and twisted ribbons.  相似文献

We describe methodology for producing highly uniform, ordered and reproducible superstructures of surfactant-coated ZnS nanorod and nanowire assemblies, and propose a predictive multiscale "packing model" for superstructure formation based on electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction data on the superstructure, as well as on individual components of the nanostructured system. The studied nanoparticles showed a hierarchical structure starting from the individual faceted ZnS inorganic cores, onto which the crystalline surfactant molecules are adsorbed, to the superstructure of the nanoparticle arrays. Our results point out the critical role of the surfactant headgroup and polarity in nanoparticle assembly, and demonstrate the relationship between the molecular structure of the surfactant and the resulting superstructure of the nanoparticle assemblies.  相似文献

Polymerization-induced chiral self-assembly(PICSA)is an efficient strategy that not only allows the construction of the supramolecular chiral assemblies in a controlled manner but also can regulate the morphology in situ.Herein,a series of azobenzene-containing block copolymer(Azo-BCP)assemblies with tunable morphologies and supramolecular chirality were obtained through the PICSA strategy. The supramolecular chirality of Azo-BCP assemblies could be regulated by carbon dioxide(CO2)stimulus,and completely recovered by bubbling with Ar.A reversible morphology transformation and chiroptical switching process could also be achieved by the alternative 365 nm UV light irradiation and heatingcooling treatment. Moreover, the supramolecular chirality is thermo-responsive and a reversible chiral-achiral switching was successfully realized, which can be reversibly repeated for at least five times. This work provides a feasible strategy for constructing triple stimuli-responsive supramolecular chiral nano-objects in situ.  相似文献

Chiral supramolecules prepared by the additive-driven self-assembly of block copolymers provide a facile method to construct helical nanostructures. In this study, we investigated the chiral transfer from chiral tartaric acid to poly(styrene)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) using small-angle X-ray scattering, transmission electron microscopy, circular dichroism, and vibrational circular dichroism. The results showed that the chirality was transferred to both the segments of block copolymer irrespective of the interaction with the chiral additives and formation of helical phase structure. However, the chirality transfer was carried out using different methods: for poly(ethylene oxide) segments, the chirality transfer was carried out via direct hydrogen bond formation; for polystyrene segments, the chirality transfer was carried out via the cooperative motion of block copolymers during the thermal annealing.  相似文献

Supramolecular self-assembly stands for the spontaneous aggregation of small organic compounds or polymers into ordered structures at any scale. When being induced by inherent molecular chiral centers or ambient asymmetric factors, asymmetric spatial arrangement between building units shall occur, which is defined as supramolecular chirality. Except for molecular design, utilizing external stimulus factors to tune supramolecular chirality is a promising approach. In this Concept article, we particularly discuss the important role of solvents in manipulating the chirality of self-assembled systems. The impact of solvents on the chirality is generally based on three properties of solvents, i.e., chirality, polarity, and active coassembly with building blocks. Molecular self-assembly in chiral solvents could undergo the chirality transfer, exhibiting a chiral induction effect. Solvent polarity often determines intermolecular orientation. As a consequence, those building blocks with both polar and apolar segments might change their chirality depending on the solvent polarity. We elaborate the active participation of solvent molecules into ordered structures together with building blocks, where solvents and building blocks exhibit a coassembly manner. By specific treatments such as heating and cooling, solvents could be released or re-entrapped, allowing a smart control over supramolecular chirality. The solvent effect in manipulating two-dimensional chiral self-assemblies is then discussed. The perspective and future development in this research field are presented at last.  相似文献

Hierarchical supramolecular chiral liquid-crystalline (LC) polymer assemblies are challenging to construct in situ in a controlled manner. Now, polymerization-induced chiral self-assembly (PICSA) is reported. Hierarchical supramolecular chiral azobenzene-containing block copolymer (Azo-BCP) assemblies were constructed with π–π stacking interactions occurring in the layered structure of Azo smectic phases. The evolution of chirality from terminal alkyl chain to Azo mesogen building blocks and further induction of supramolecular chirality in LC BCP assemblies during PICSA is achieved. Morphologies such as spheres, worms, helical fibers, lamellae, and vesicles were observed. The morphological transition had a crucial effect on the chiral expression of Azo-BCP assemblies. The supramolecular chirality of Azo-BCP assemblies destroyed by 365 nm UV irradiation can be recovered by heating–cooling treatment; this dynamic reversible achiral–chiral switching can be repeated at least five times.  相似文献

Directing the self-assembly of organic building blocks with 2D templates has been a promising method to create molecular superstructures having unique physicochemical properties. In this work the on-surface self-assembly of simple ditopic functional molecules confined inside periodic nanotemplates was modeled by means of the lattice Monte Carlo simulation method. Two types of confinement, that is honeycomb porous networks and parallel grooves of controlled diameter and width were used in the calculations. Additionally, the effect of (pro)chirality of the adsorbing molecules on the outcome of the templated self-assembly was examined. To that end, enantiopure and racemic assemblies were studied and the resulting structures were identified and classified. The obtained findings demonstrated that suitable tuning of the structural parameters of the templates enables directing the self-assembly towards linear and cyclic aggregates with controlled size. Moreover, chiral resolution of the molecular conformers using honeycomb networks with adjusted pore size was found possible. Our theoretical predictions can be helpful in designing structured surfaces to direct self-assembly and polymerization of organic functional building blocks.  相似文献

The bottom-up fabrication of surface hierarchical nanostructures is of great importance for the development of molecular nanostructures for chiral molecular recognition and enantioselective catalysis. Herein, we report the construction of a series of 2D chiral hierarchical structures by trinary molecular self-assembly with copper phthalocyanine (CuPc), 2,3,7,8,12,13-hexahexyloxy-truxenone (TrO23), and 1,3,5-tris(10-carboxydecyloxy) benzene (TCDB). A series of flower-like chiral hierarchical molecular architectures with increased generations are formed, and the details of these structures are investigated by high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The flower-like hierarchical molecular architectures could be described by a unified configuration in which the lobe of each architecture is composed of a different number of triangular shape building units (TBUs). The off-axis edge-to-edge packing of TBUs confers the organizational chirality of the hierarchical assemblies. On the other hand, the TBUs can tile the surface in a vertex-sharing configuration, resulting in the expansion of chiral unit cells, which thereby further modulate the periodicity of chiral voids in the multilevel hierarchical assemblies. The formation of desired hierarchical structures could be controlled through tuning the molar ratio of each component in liquid phase. The results are significant for the design and fabrication of multicomponent chiral hierarchical molecular nanostructures.  相似文献

Chiral molecule-driven asymmetric structures are known to be elusive because of the intriguing chirality transfer from chiral molecules to achiral species. Here, we found that the chiral assembly of BiOBr is independent of the chirality of the organic molecular inducer but dependent on geometric structural matching between the inducer and inorganic species. Diastereoisomeric sugar alcohols (DSAs) with identical numbers of carbon chiral centers and functional groups but with different R/S configurations and optical activities (OAs) were chosen as symmetry-breaking agents for inducing chiral mesostructured BiOBr films (CMBFs) under hydrothermal conditions. Multiple levels of chirality with different handedness were identified in the CMBFs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations suggest that asymmetric defects in the Br–Bi tetragonal cone caused by physically adsorbed DSAs on the surfaces of the BiOBr crystals are the geometric basis for triggering the chiral twist in the BiOBr monolayer. Our findings provide new insights for understanding the origin of chirality and the chiral transfer mechanism underlying the assembly of achiral species.

The chirality transfer is dependent on geometrical matching between the chiral inducer and inorganic species.  相似文献

The formation of 2D chiral monolayers obtained by self-assembly of chiral molecules on surfaces has been widely reported in the literature. Control of chirality transfer from a single molecule to surface superstructures is a challenging and important aspect for tailoring the properties of 2D nanostructures. However, despite the wealth of investigations performed in recent years, how chiral transfer takes place on a large scale still remains an open question. In this paper we report a coupling of scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction measurements with an original theoretical approach, combining molecular dynamics and essential dynamics with density functional theory, to investigate self-assembled chiral structures formed when alaninol adsorbs on Cu(100). The peculiarity of this system is related to the formation of tetrameric molecular structures which constitute the building blocks of the self-assembled chiral monolayer. Such characteristics make alaninol/Cu(100) a good candidate to reveal chiral expression changes. We find that the deposition of alaninol enantiomers results in the formation of isolated tetramers that are aligned along the directions of the substrate at low coverage or when geometrical confinement prevents long-range order. Conversely, a rotation of 14° with respect to the Cu(100) unit vectors is observed when small clusters of tetramers are formed. An insight to the process leading to a 2D globally chiral surface has been obtained by monitoring molecular assemblies as they grow from the early stages of adsorption, suggesting that the distinctive orientation of the self-assembled monolayer originates from a balance of cooperating forces which start acting only when tetramers pack together to form small clusters.  相似文献

Using green chemistry to control chirality at hierarchical levels as well as chiroptical activities endows with new opportunities to the development of multiple functions. Here, the four-component Ugi reaction is introduced for the general and precise optical chirality sensing of amines as well as the surface nanoengineering of chiral soft self-assemblies. To overcome the relatively weak Cotton effects, direct synthesis of a folded peptide structure on a rotatable ferrocene core with axial chirality was accomplished from chiral amine, 1,1’-ferrocenyl dicarboxylic acid, formaldehyde and isocyanide. Enhanced Cotton effects benefiting from the folded structure allow for the precise and quantitative sensing of natural and synthetic chiral amines covering alkyl, aromatic amines and amino acid derivatives. In addition, aqueous reaction enables the modification of amine-bearing dye to microfibers self-assembled from π-conjugated amino acids. Surface dye-modification via Ugi reaction barely changes the pristine morphology, showing non-invasive properties in contrast to dye staining, which is applicable in soft nano/microarchitectures from self-assembly. This work which combines the four-component Ugi reaction to enable precise ee% detection and surface nanoengineering of soft chiral assemblies sheds light on the advanced application of green chemistry to chirality science.  相似文献

Helical rosette nanotubes (RNTs) are obtained through the self-assembly of the GwedgeC motif, a self-complementary DNA base analogue featuring the complementary hydrogen bonding arrays of both guanine and cytosine. The first step of this process is the formation of a 6-membered supermacrocycle (rosette) maintained by 18 hydrogen bonds, which then self-organizes into a helical stack defining a supramolecular sextuple helix whose chirality and three-dimensional organization arise from the chirality, chemical structure, and conformational organization of the GwedgeC motif. Because a chiral GwedgeC motif is predisposed to express itself asymmetrically upon self-assembly, there is a natural tendency for it to form one chiral RNT over its mirror image. Here we describe the synthesis and characterization of a chiral GwedgeC motif that self-assembles into helical RNTs in methanol, but undergoes mirror image supramolecular chirality inversion upon the addition of very small amounts of water (<1% v/v). Extensive physical and computational studies established that the mirror-image RNTs obtained, referred to as chiromers, result from thermodynamic (in water) and kinetic (in methanol) self-assembly processes involving two conformational isomers of the parent GwedgeC motif. Although derived from conformational states, the chiromers are thermodynamically stable supramolecular species, they display dominant/recessive behavior, they memorize and amplify their chirality in an achiral environment, they change their chirality in response to solvent and temperature, and they catalytically transfer their chirality. On the basis of these studies, a detailed mechanism for supramolecular chirality inversion triggered by specific molecular interactions between water molecules and the GwedgeC motif is proposed.  相似文献
