Eight finite difference methods are employed to study the solitary waves of the equal-width (EW) and regularized long–wave (RLW) equations. The methods include second-order accurate (in space) implicit and linearly implicit techniques, a three-point, fourth-order accurate, compact operator algorithm, an exponential method based on the local integration of linear, second-order ordinary differential equations, and first- and second-order accurate temporal discretizations. It is shown that the compact operator method with a Crank–Nicolson discretization is more accurate than the other seven techniques as assessed for the three invariants of the EW and RLW equations and the L2-norm errors when the exact solution is available. It is also shown that the use of Gaussian initial conditions may result in the formation of either positive or negative secondary solitary waves for the EW equation and the formation of positive solitary waves with or without oscillating tails for the RLW equation depending on the amplitude and width of the Gaussian initial conditions. In either case, it is shown that the creation of the secondary wave may be preceded by a steepening and an narrowing of the initial condition. The creation of a secondary wave is reported to also occur in the dissipative RLW equation, whereas the effects of dissipation in the EW equation are characterized by a decrease in amplitude, an increase of the width and a curving of the trajectory of the solitary wave. The collision and divergence of solitary waves of the EW and RLW equations are also considered in terms of the wave amplitude and the invariants of these equations.  相似文献

We present a method to prove nonlinear instability of solitary waves in dispersive models. Two examples are analyzed: we prove the nonlinear long time instability of the KdV solitary wave (with respect to periodic transverse perturbations) under a KP-I flow and the transverse nonlinear instability of solitary waves for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation.  相似文献

We derive the Whitham modulation equations for the Zakharov–Kuznetsov equation via a multiple scales expansion and averaging two conservation laws over one oscillation period of its periodic traveling wave solutions. We then use the Whitham modulation equations to study the transverse stability of the periodic traveling wave solutions. We find that all periodic solutions traveling along the first spatial coordinate are linearly unstable with respect to purely transversal perturbations, and we obtain an explicit expression for the growth rate of perturbations in the long wave limit. We validate these predictions by linearizing the equation around its periodic solutions and solving the resulting eigenvalue problem numerically. We also calculate the growth rate of the solitary waves analytically. The predictions of Whitham modulation theory are in excellent agreement with both of these approaches. Finally, we generalize the stability analysis to periodic waves traveling in arbitrary directions and to perturbations that are not purely transversal, and we determine the resulting domains of stability and instability.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the transverse linear instability of one-dimensional solitary wave solutions of the coupled system of two-dimensional long-wave–short-wave interaction equations. We show that the one-dimensional solitary waves are linearly unstable to perturbations in the transverse direction if the coefficient of the term associated with transverse effects is negative. This transverse instability condition coincides with the non-existence condition identified in the literature for two-dimensional localized solitary wave solutions of the coupled system.  相似文献

We study the asymptotic stability of planar waves for the Allen–Cahn equation on ? n , where n ≥ 2. Our first result states that planar waves are asymptotically stable under any—possibly large—initial perturbations that decay at space infinity. Our second result states that the planar waves are asymptotically stable under almost periodic perturbations. More precisely, the perturbed solution converges to a planar wave as t → ∞. The convergence is uniform in ? n . Lastly, the existence of a solution that oscillates permanently between two planar waves is shown, which implies that planar waves are not asymptotically stable under more general perturbations.  相似文献

This paper deals with recent developments of linear and nonlinear Rossby waves in an ocean. Included are also linear Poincaré, Rossby, and Kelvin waves in an ocean. The dispersion diagrams for Poincaré, Kelvin and Rossby waves are presented. Special attention is given to the nonlinear Rossby waves on a β-plane ocean. Based on the perturbation analysis, it is shown that the nonlinear evolution equation for the wave amplitude satisfies a modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The solution of this equation represents solitary waves in a dispersive medium. In other words, the envelope of the amplitude of the waves has a soliton structure and these envelope solitons propagate with the group velocity of the Rossby waves. Finally, a nonlinear analytical model is presented for long Rossby waves in a meridional channel with weak shear. A new nonlinear wave equation for the amplitude of large Rossby waves is derived in a region where fluid flows over the recirculation core. It is shown that the governing amplitude equations for the inner and outer zones are both KdV type, where weak nonlinearity is balanced by weak dispersion. In the inner zone, the nonlinear amplitude equation has a new term proportional to the 3/2 power of the difference between the wave amplitude and the critical amplitude, and this term occurs to account for a nonlinearity due to the flow over the vortex core. The solution of the amplitude equations with the linear shear flow represents the solitary waves. The present study deals with the lowest mode (n=1) analysis. An extension of the higher modes (n?2) of this work will be made in a subsequent paper.  相似文献

For the one‐dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations with parity‐time (PT) symmetric potentials, it is shown that when a real symmetric potential is perturbed by weak PT‐symmetric perturbations, continuous families of asymmetric solitary waves in the real potential are destroyed. It is also shown that in the same model with a general PT‐symmetric potential, symmetry breaking of PT‐symmetric solitary waves does not occur. Based on these findings, it is conjectured that one‐dimensional PT‐symmetric potentials cannot support continuous families of non‐PT‐symmetric solitary waves.  相似文献

We study the transverse spectral stability of the one-dimensional small-amplitude periodic traveling wave solutions of the (2+1)-dimensional Konopelchenko–Dubrovsky (KD) equation. We show that these waves are transversely unstable with respect to two-dimensional perturbations that are periodic in both directions with long wavelength in the transverse direction. We also show that these waves are transversely stable with respect to perturbations which are either mean-zero periodic or square-integrable in the direction of the propagation of the wave and periodic in the transverse direction with finite or short wavelength. We discuss the implications of these results for special cases of the KD equation—namely, KP-II and mKP-II equations.  相似文献

The regularised long wave equation is solved by Galerkin's method using linear space finite elements. In the simulations of the migration of a single solitary wave, this algorithm is shown to have good accuracy for small amplitude waves. Moreover, for very small amplitude waves (⩽0.09) it has higher accuracy than an approach using quadratic B-spline finite elements within Galerkin's method. The interaction of two solitary waves is modelled for small amplitude waves.  相似文献

A model equation governing the primitive dynamics of wave packets near an extremum of the linear dispersion relation at finite wavenumber is derived. In two spatial dimensions, we include the effects of weak variation of the wave in the direction transverse to the direction of propagation. The resulting equation is contrasted with the Kadomtsev–Petviashvilli and Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations. The model is derived as an approximation to the equations for deep water gravity-capillary waves, but has wider applications. Both line solitary waves and solitary waves which decay in both the transverse and propagating directions—lump solitary waves—are computed. The stability of these waves is investigated and their dynamics are studied via numerical time evolution of the equation.  相似文献

This article deals with the envelope solitary waves and periodic waves in the AB equations that serve as model equations describing marginally unstable baroclinic wave packets in geophysical fluids and also ultra‐short pulses in nonlinear optics. An envelope solitary wave has a width proportional to its velocity and inversely proportional to its amplitude. The velocity of the envelope solitary wave is partially dependent on its amplitude in the sense that the amplitude determines the upper or lower limit of the velocity. When two envelope solitary waves collide, they survive the collision and retain their identities except for a shift in the positions of both the envelopes and the carrier waves. The periodic wave solutions in sine wave form may be stable or unstable depending upon the wave parameters. When the sine wave is destabilized by small perturbations, its long‐time evolution shows a Fermi–Pasta–Ulam‐type oscillation.  相似文献

We present a general result of transverse nonlinear instability of 1d solitary waves for Hamiltonian PDE's for both periodic or localized transverse perturbations. Our main structural assumption is that the linear part of the 1-d model and the transverse perturbation “have the same sign”. Our result applies to the generalized KP-I equation, the Nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the generalized Boussinesq system and the Zakharov–Kuznetsov equation and we hope that it may be useful in other contexts.  相似文献

The dynamical behavior and special exact solutions of nonlinear dispersive Boussinesq equation (B(m,n) equation), uttuxxa(un)xx+b(um)xxxx=0, is studied by using bifurcation theory of dynamical system. As a result, all possible phase portraits in the parametric space for the travelling wave system, solitary wave, kink and anti-kink wave solutions and uncountably infinite many smooth and non-smooth periodic wave solutions are obtained. It can be shown that the existence of singular straight line in the travelling wave system is the reason why smooth waves converge to cusp waves, finally. When parameter are varied, under different parametric conditions, various sufficient conditions guarantee the existence of the above solutions are given.  相似文献

The goal of this work is to determine classes of traveling solitary wave solutions for a differential approximation of a discontinuous Galerkin finite difference scheme by means of an hyperbolic ansatz. It is shown that spurious solitary waves can occur in finite-difference solutions of nonlinear wave equation. The occurence of such a spurious solitary wave, which exhibits a very long life time, results in a non-vanishing numerical error for arbitrary time in unbounded numerical domain. Such a behavior is referred here to have a structural instability of the scheme, since the space of solutions spanned by the numerical scheme encompasses types of solutions (solitary waves in the present case) that are not solutions of the original continuous equations. This paper extends our previous work about classical schemes to discontinuous Galerkin schemes (David and Sagaut in Chaos Solitons Fractals 41(4):2193?C2199, 2009; Chaos Solitons Fractals 41(2):655?C660, 2009).  相似文献

Orbital stability of solitary waves for Kundu equation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper, we consider the Kundu equation which is not a standard Hamiltonian system. The abstract orbital stability theory proposed by Grillakis et al. (1987, 1990) cannot be applied directly to study orbital stability of solitary waves for this equation. Motivated by the idea of Guo and Wu (1995), we construct three invariants of motion and use detailed spectral analysis to obtain orbital stability of solitary waves for Kundu equation. Since Kundu equation is more complex than the derivative Schrödinger equation, we utilize some techniques to overcome some difficulties in this paper. It should be pointed out that the results obtained in this paper are more general than those obtained by Guo and Wu (1995). We present a sufficient condition under which solitary waves are orbitally stable for 2c3+s2υ<0, while Guo and Wu (1995) only considered the case 2c3+s2υ>0. We obtain the results on orbital stability of solitary waves for the derivative Schrödinger equation given by Colin and Ohta (2006) as a corollary in this paper. Furthermore, we obtain orbital stability of solitary waves for Chen-Lee-Lin equation and Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation, respectively.  相似文献

The nonlinear Schrödinger equation possesses three distinct six-parameter families of complex-valued quasiperiodic traveling waves, one in the defocusing case and two in the focusing case. All these solutions have the property that their modulus is a periodic function of xct for some cR. In this paper we investigate the stability of the small amplitude traveling waves, both in the defocusing and the focusing case. Our first result shows that these waves are orbitally stable within the class of solutions which have the same period and the same Floquet exponent as the original wave. Next, we consider general bounded perturbations and focus on spectral stability. We show that the small amplitude traveling waves are stable in the defocusing case, but unstable in the focusing case. The instability is of side-band type, and therefore cannot be detected in the periodic set-up used for the analysis of orbital stability.  相似文献

Considered herein is the Ostrovsky equation which is widely used to describe the effect of rotation on the surface and internal solitary waves in shallow water or the capillary waves in a plasma. It is shown that the solitary-wave solutions are orbitally stable for certain wave speeds.

This paper is concerned with the stability of traveling wavefronts for a population dynamics model with time delay. Combining the weighted energy method and the comparison principle, the global exponential stability of noncritical traveling wavefronts(waves with speeds c c_*, where c = c~* is the minimal speed) is established, when the initial perturbations around the wavefront decays to zero exponentially in space as x →-∞, but it can be allowed arbitrary large in other locations, which improves the results in [9, 18, 21].  相似文献

Non-linear wave processes on the surface of shallow water under a layer of ice are considered taking bending deformations and tension compression into account. A closed system of equations in the water level perturbations and the velocity potential is derived to describe them. From the consistancy conditions for this system, using the method of multiple scales and perturbation theory, a ninth-order non-linear evolution equation is obtained for describing the perturbations of the water level, taking into account higher order corrections in the small parameters. A periodic solution of the equation obtained is constructed, expressed in terms of Weierstrass elliptic functions. Solutions are obtained in the form of solitary waves, expressed in terms of hyperbolic functions, using a modification of the simplest equations method. It is shown that, for periodic and solitary waves, two forms of wave profiles exist depending on the parameters of the mathematical model.  相似文献
