Three novel copolyfluorenes ( P1 ‐ P3 ) containing pendant bipolar groups (2.5–7.7 mol %), directly linked hole‐transporting carbazole and electron‐transporting aromatic 1,2,4‐triazole, were synthesized by the Suzuki coupling reaction and applied to enhance emission efficiency of polymer light‐emitting diodes based on conventional MEH‐PPV. The bipolar groups not only suppress undesirable green emission of polyfluorene under thermal annealing, but also promote electron‐ and hole‐affinity of the resulting copolyfluorenes. Blending the bipolar copolyfluorenes with MEH‐PPV results in significant enhancement of device performance [ITO/PEDOT:PSS/MEH‐PPV+ P1 , P2 or P3 /Ca(50 nm)/Al(100 nm)]. The maximum luminance and luminance efficiency were enhanced from 3230 cd/m2 and 0.29 cd/A of MEH‐PPV‐only device to 15,690 cd/m2 and 0.81 cd/A (blend device with MEH‐PPV/ P3 = 94/6 containing about 0.46 wt % of pendant bipolar residues), respectively. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of the bipolar copolyfluorenes in enhancing emission efficiency of MEH‐PPV. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

Two novel copoly(p‐phenylene)s ( P1 – P2 ) containing bipolar groups (12.8 and 6.8 mol %, respectively), directly linked hole transporting triphenylamine and electron transporting aromatic 1,2,4‐triazole, were synthesized to enhance electroluminescence (EL) of poly(p‐phenylene vinylene) (PPV) derivatives. The bipolar groups not only enhance thermal stability but also promote electron affinity and hole affinity of the resulting copoly(p‐phenylene)s. Blending the bipolar copoly‐(p‐phenylene)s ( P1 – P2 ) with PPV derivatives ( d6‐PPV ) as an emitting layer effectively improve the emission efficiency of its electroluminescent devices [indium tin oxide (ITO)/poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/polymer blend/Ca (50 nm)/Al (100 nm)]. The maximum luminance and maximum luminance efficiency were significantly enhanced from 310 cd m?2 and 0.03 cd A?1 ( d6‐PPV ‐based device) to 1450 cd m?2 and 0.20 cd A?1 (blend device with d6‐PPV / P1 = 96/4 containing ~0.5 wt % of bipolar groups), respectively. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of the copoly(p‐phenylene)s with bipolar groups in enhancing EL of PPV derivatives. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2010  相似文献

Carrier balance is essential to obtain efficient emission in polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLEDs). A new polymer 3P5O composed of alternating p‐terphenyl and tetraethylene glycol ether segments is designed and synthesized by the Suzuki coupling reaction and successfully employed as hole‐buffer layer to improve carrier balance. Multilayer PLEDs [ITO/PEDOT:PSS/ 3P5O /SY/LiF/Al], with Super Yellow (SY) as the emitting layer and 3P5O as the hole‐buffer layer, reveal maximum luminance (17,050 cd/m2) and maximum current efficiency (6.6 cd/A) superior to that without the hole‐buffer layer (10,017 cd/m2, 3.0 cd/A). Moreover, it also shows better performance than that using conventional BCP as hole‐blocking layer [ITO/PEDOT:PSS/SY/BCP/LiF/Al (80 nm): 13,639 cd/m2, 4.1 cd/A]. The performance enhancement has been attributed to hole‐buffering characteristics of 3P5O that results in improved carrier recombination ratio and wider carrier recombination region. Current results indicate that the 3P5O is a promising hole‐buffer polymer to enhance the performance of optoelectronic devices. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Poly[2‐methoxy‐5‐(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)‐p‐phenylenevinylene] (MEH‐PPV) with a molar mass of 26–47 × 104 g mol?1 and a polydispersity of 2.5–3.2 was synthesized by a liquid–solid two‐phase reaction. The liquid phase was tetrahydrofuran (THF) containing 1,4‐bis(chloromethyl)‐2‐methoxy‐5‐(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)benzene as the monomer and a certain amount of tetrabutylammonium bromide as a phase‐transfer catalyst. The solid phase consisted of potassium hydroxide particles with diameters smaller than 0.5 mm. The reaction was carried out at a low temperature of 0 °C and under nitrogen protection. No gelation was observed during the polymerization process, and the polymer was soluble in the usual organic solvents, such as chloroform, toluene, THF, and xylene. A polymer light‐emitting diode was fabricated with MEH‐PPV as an active luminescent layer. The device had an indium tin oxide/poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxylthiophene) (PEDOT)/MEH‐PPV/Ba/Al configuration. It showed a turn‐on voltage of 3.3 V, a luminescence intensity at 6.1 V of 550 cd/m2, a luminescence efficiency of 0.43 cd/A, and a quantum efficiency of 0.57%. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article reports the synthesis and characterization of a novel thermally crosslinkable hole‐transporting poly (fluorene‐co‐triphenylamine) (PFO‐TPA) by Suzuki coupling reaction, followed with its application in the fabrication of multilayer light‐emitting diodes by wet processes. The thermal, photophysical, and electrochemical properties of PFO‐TPA were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis, optical spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry, respectively. Thermally crosslinked PFO‐TPA, through pendant styryl groups, demonstrates excellent thermal stability (Td > 400 °C, Tg = 152 °C), solvent resistance, and film homogeneity. Its highest occupied molecular orbital level (?5.30 eV) lies between those of PEDOT:PSS (?5.0 ~ ?5.2 eV) and poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene) (PFO: ?5.70 eV), forming a stepwise energy ladder to facilitate hole injection. Multilayer device with crosslinked PFO‐TPA as hole‐injection layer (HIL) (ITO/PEDOT:PSS/HIL/PFO/LiF/Ca/Al) was readily fabricated by successive spin‐coating processes, its maximum luminance efficiency (3.16 cd/A) were about six times higher than those without PFO‐TPA layer (0.50 cd/A). The result of hole‐only device also confirmed hole‐injection and hole‐transport abilities of crosslinked PFO‐TPA layer. Consequently, the device performance enhancement is attributed to more balanced charges injection in the presence of crosslinked PFO‐TPA layer. The thermally crosslinkable PFO‐TPA is a promising material for the fabrication of efficient multilayer polymer light‐emitting diodes because it is not only a hole‐transporting polymer but also thermally crosslinkable. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To improve efficiency, processability, and stability, three novel poly‐(p‐phenylene vinylenes) (PPVs) derivatives ( P a , P b , and P c ) with pendent 2,4‐difluorophenyl and fluorenyl moieties were synthesized via Gilch reaction. Their structures were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and ELEM. ANAL . Compared with those of PPV and MEH‐PPV, the absolute quantum efficiencies of these polymers showed remarkable improvement (measured at 38.7, 37.2, and 20.3%, respectively), which can be attributed to the presence of twisted multiaryl segments and fluorine atoms. TGA revealed that the inflection temperatures of their thermal decomposition curves were above 400 °C. Double‐layered electroluminescent devices with these polymers as light‐emitting layers [ITO/PEDOT:PSS/Polymer/Ba/Al] showed peak emissions at 493/515, 503, and 600 nm and maximum luminance of 2700, 450, and 4700 cd/m2 for P a , P b , and P c , respectively, with onset voltages of ~4 V. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel conjugated polyfluorene copolymers, poly[9,9‐dihexylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl‐co‐(2,5‐bis(4′‐diphenylaminostyryl)‐phenylene‐1,4‐diyl)]s (PGs), have been synthesized by nickel(0)‐mediated polymerization from 2,7‐dibromo‐9,9‐dihexylfluorene and 1,4′‐dibromo‐2,5‐bis(4‐diphenylaminostyryl)benzene with various molar ratios of the monomers. Because of the incorporation of triphenylamine (TPA) moieties, PGs exhibit much higher HOMO levels than the corresponding polyfluorene homopolymers and are able to facilitate hole injection into the polymer layer from the anode electrode in light‐emitting diodes. Conventional polymeric light‐emitting devices with the configuration ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ca/Al have been fabricated. A light‐emitting device produced with one of the PG copolymers (PG10) as the emitting layer exhibited a voltage‐independent and stable bluish‐green emission with color coordinates of (0.22, 0.42) at 5 V. The maximum brightness and current efficiency of the PG10 device were 3370 cd/m2 (at 9.6 V) and 0.6 cd/A, respectively. To realize a white polymeric light‐emitting diode, PG10 as the host material was blended with 1.0 wt % of a red‐light‐emitting polymer, poly[9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐2,5‐bis(2‐thienyl‐2‐cyanovinyl)‐1‐(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)‐4‐methoxybenzene‐5′,5′‐diyl] (PFR4‐S), and poly[2‐methoxy‐5‐(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene] (MEH‐PPV). The device based on PG10:PFR4‐S showed an almost perfect pure white electroluminescence emission, with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.33, 0.36) at 8 V; for the PG10:MEH‐PPV device, the CIE coordinates at this voltage were (0.30, 0.40) with a maximum brightness of 1930 cd/m2. Moreover, the white‐light emission from the PG10:PFR4‐S device was stable even at different driving voltages and had CIE coordinates of (0.34, 0.36) at 6 V and (0.31, 0.35) at 10 V. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two new electron‐transporting copolyphenylenes P1NH and P2NH possessing balanced charges crucial to emission efficiency of polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLEDs) have been synthesized and applied as an electron‐transporting layer (ETL). The main chain structure is all para‐linkage for P1NH and both para‐ and meta‐linkage for P2NH , with the same pendant electron‐withdrawing benzimidazolyl and polar diethanolaminohexyloxy groups. Both copolymers possess excellent thermal stability (T d > 300 °C, T g > 100 °C) due to their rigid backbones. In addition, the pendant groups effectively lower LUMO (~ ?2.70 eV) and HOMO (~ ?5.70 eV) levels, resulting in improved electron‐transporting and hole‐blocking capabilities. Multilayer yellow‐emitting PLEDs with a configuration of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/SY/ETL/LiF/Al were successfully fabricated by the spin‐coating process. The maximum luminance and maximum current efficiency of the P1NH ‐based device were 12,881 cd/m2 and 10.94 cd/A, respectively, superior to the performance of P2NH ‐based device (4938 cd/m2, 3.70 cd/A) and the device without ETL (8690 cd/m2, 2.78 cd/A). Current results indicate that P1NH is highly effective in enhancing electron transport and device performance. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A hole‐injection/transport bilayer structure on an indium tin oxide (ITO) layer was fabricated using two photocrosslinkable polymers with different molecular energy levels. Two photoreactive polymers were synthesized using 2,7‐(or 3,6‐)‐dibromo‐9‐(6‐((3‐methyloxetan‐3‐yl)methoxy)hexyl)‐9H‐carbazole) and 2,4‐dimethyl‐N,N‐bis(4‐ (4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐1,3,2‐dioxaborolan‐2‐yl)phenyl)aniline via a Suzuki coupling reaction. When the oxetane groups were photopolymerized in the presence of a cationic photoinitiator, the photocured film showed good solvent resistance and compatibility with a poly(N‐vinylcarbazole) (PVK)‐based emitting layer. Without the use of a conventional hole injection layer (HIL) of poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene)/(polystyrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), the resulting green light‐emitting device bearing PVK: 5‐4‐tert‐butylphenyl‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole (PBD):Ir(Cz‐ppy)3 exhibited a maximum external quantum efficiency of 9.69%; this corresponds to a luminous efficiency of 29.57 cd/A for the device K‐4 configuration ITO/POx‐I/POx‐II/PVK:PBD:Ir(Cz‐ppy)3/triazole/Alq3/LiF/Al. These values are much higher than those of PLEDs using conventional PEDOT:PSS as a single HIL. The significant improvement in device efficiency is the result of suppression of the hole injection/transport properties through double‐layered photocrosslinked‐conjugated polymers. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We prepared two vinyl copolymers P1 and P2 containing pendant distyrylbenzene and aromatic 1,3,4‐oxadiazole derivatives, respectively, from their precursor poly(styrene‐ran‐4‐vinylbenzyl chloride) (Mw = 11,400, PDI = 1.18), which had been prepared by the controlled radical polymerization (RAFT). Two main chain polymers containing similar isolated distyrylbenzene ( P3) and aromatic 1,3,4‐oxadiazole ( P4 ) chromophores were also synthesized for comparative study. The resulted copolymers ( P1 – P4 ) are soluble in common organic solvents and are basically amorphous materials with 5% weight‐loss temperature higher than 360 °C. The PL spectral results reveal that the architecture of P1 prevents the formation of inter‐ or intramolecular interaction. The HOMO and LUMO levels of P2 , estimated from cyclic voltammetric data, are ?5.96 and ?3.81 eV, respectively, which are much lower than those of P1 (?5.12 and ?3.11 eV). The emission of blend from P1 and P2 are contributed mainly from distyrylbenzene fluorophore (~450 nm) owing to efficient energy transfer. Moreover, the blend exhibits three kinds of redox behavior depending on their weight ratios. The luminance and current efficiency of the EL device lpar;ITO/PEDOT/ MEH ‐ PPV + P2 /Al) are 503 cd/m2 and 0.11 cd/A, which can be improved to 1285 cd/m2 and 0.44 cd/A, respectively, as the weight ratio of P2 increases from 0 to 20%. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. N‐type doping of poly(2‐methoxy‐5‐(2′‐ethyl‐hexyloxy)‐p‐phenylene vinylene) (MEH‐PPV) with decamethylcobaltocene (DMC) strongly improves the electron transport due to filling of the electron traps. Unexpectedly, the n‐type doping simultaneously suppresses the hole transport in MEH‐PPV. We demonstrate that this strong reduction of the hole transport originates from unionized DMC molecules that act as hole traps. This hole trapping effect explains why the current of a DMC‐doped MEH‐PPV polymer light‐emitting diode is orders of magnitude lower than that of the undoped device. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of white polymer light emitting displays (PLEDs) based on a polymer blend of polyalkylfluorenes and poly(2‐methoxy‐5,2′‐ethyl‐hexyloxy‐1,4‐phenylene vinylene) (MEH‐PPV) was developed. MEH‐PPV or red light emitting alkyfluorene copolymer (PFR) was blended with blue light emitting alkyfluorene copolymer (PFB), and MEH‐PPV was blended with both green light emitting alkyfluorene copolymer (PFG) and PFB to generate white light emission PLEDs. Low turn on voltage (2.7 V), high brightness (12,149 nits), high efficiency (4.0 cd/A, 4.0 lm/W), and good color purity (Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIEx,y) co‐ordinates (0.32, 0.34)) were obtained for the white PLEDs based on the PFB and MEH‐PPV polymer blend. Exciplex formation in the interface between PFR and PFB induced a new green emission peak for these two components based white PLEDs. As a result, strong white emission (4078 nits) was obtained by mixing the red, green, and blue (RGB) three primary colors. High color purity of blue (CIE, x = 0.14, y = 0.08), green (CIE, x = 0.32, y = 0.64) and red (CIE, x = 0.67, y = 0.33) emissions was achieved for white PLEDs combining with dielectric interference color‐filters. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel styrene derived monomers with triphenylamine‐based units, and their polymers have been synthesized and compared with the well‐known structure of polymer of N,N′‐bis(3‐methylphenyl)‐N,N′‐diphenylbenzidine with respect to their hole‐transporting behavior in phosphorescent polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLEDs). A vinyltriphenylamine structure was selected as a basic unit, functionalized at the para positions with the following side groups: diphenylamine, 3‐methylphenyl‐aniline, 1‐ and 2‐naphthylamine, carbazole, and phenothiazine. The polymers are used in PLEDs as host polymers for blend systems with the following device configuration: glass/indium–tin–oxide/PEDOT:PSS/polymer‐blend/CsF/Ca/Ag. In addition to the hole‐transporting host polymer, the polymer blend includes a phosphorescent dopant [Ir(Me‐ppy)3] and an electron‐transporting molecule (2‐(4‐biphenyl)‐5‐(4‐tert‐butylphenyl)‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole). We demonstrate that two polymers are excellent hole‐transporting matrix materials for these blend systems because of their good overall electroluminescent performances and their comparatively high glass transition temperatures. For the carbazole‐substituted polymer (Tg = 246 °C), a luminous efficiency of 35 cd A?1 and a brightness of 6700 cd m?2 at 10 V is accessible. The phenothiazine‐functionalized polymer (Tg = 220 °C) shows nearly the same outstanding PLED behavior. Hence, both these polymers outperform the well‐known polymer of N,N′‐bis(3‐methylphenyl)‐N,N′‐diphenylbenzidine, showing only a luminous efficiency of 7.9 cd A?1 and a brightness of 2500 cd m?2 (10 V). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A significant improvement in the electroluminescence (EL) properties was observed for a poly{5‐methoxy‐2‐[(2′‐ethyl‐hexyl)‐oxy]‐p‐phenylenevinylene} (MEH–PPV)/poly(2,3‐diphenyl‐5‐octyl‐p‐phenylenevinylene) (DPO–PPV) blend after a thermal treatment at 200 °C for 2 h in vacuo to furnish the chemical bonding between polymer chains. 1H NMR spectroscopy and two‐photon excitation microscopy revealed that the chemical bonding turned the immiscible polyblend into a system more like a block copolymer with a vertically segregated morphology. Because both the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and highest occupied molecular orbital levels of MEH–PPV in the wetting layer were higher than those of DPO–PPV in the upper layer, the heterojunction between the two layers of the polymers fit the category of so‐called type II heterojunctions. As a result, the turn‐on voltage of the polymer light‐emitting diode prepared with the thermally treated polyblend decreased to ~0.6 V, and the EL emission intensities and quantum efficiencies increased to about 4 times those of the untreated polyblend. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. It was demonstrated that a series of copolymers consisting of 1,4‐phenylenevinylene (PV) and 1,4‐phenylene‐1,2‐ethanediyl (PE) units could be prepared from a single monomer, p‐(methoxymethyl)benzyl chloride, via the chemical vapor deposition polymerization (CVDP) method. The composition of the copolymers could be varied simply by altering the monomer activation temperature. The higher the temperature, the lower the content of the PV unit. The photo (PL)‐ and electroluminescence (EL) properties of the copolymers that revealed a blueshift when compared with PPV strongly depend on the amount of the PE units incorporated. The external quantum efficiencies of the electroluminescence devices having the configuration of ITO/PEDOT‐PSS/copolymer/Al‐Li were higher than that of PPV, which can be ascribed to the improved confinement of excitons. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly[2‐(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)‐5‐methoxy‐1,4‐phenylene‐(1‐cyanovinylene)] MEH‐CN‐PPV and its all‐trans model compound 1,4‐bis(α‐cyanostyryl)‐2‐(2‐ethylhexyloxy)‐5‐methyloxybenzene were synthesized via Knoevenagel condensation. All‐cis isomer and cistrans isomer of 1,4‐bis(α‐cyanostyryl)‐2‐(2‐ethylhexyloxy)‐5‐methyloxybenzene were prepared by the photoisomerization reaction. Comparison of the 1H NMR spectra between MEH‐CN‐PPV and three model compounds proved the occurrence of cis‐vinylene in the backbone of MEH‐CN‐PPV. According to the ratio between the cis‐vinylene signal and trans‐vinylene signal, the content of the cis‐vinylene could be estimated to be 15% in MEH‐CN‐PPV. This large cis‐vinylene content came from the rapid photochemical isomerization of cyanovinylene and was likely relative to the poor electroluminescence property of MEH‐CN‐PPV. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New copolyfluorenes (PC8OF0–PC8OF50) comprised of 9,9‐dioctylfluorene and jacketed units 2,5‐bis[(5‐octyloxy‐phenyl)‐1,3,4‐ oxadiazole]‐1‐(3,5‐dibromophenyl)‐benzene (35C8) were synthesized by palladium‐catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction. They were characterized by molecular weight determination, 1H NMR, elemental analysis, DSC, TGA, absorption and emission spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry (CV). These copolymers were readily soluble in common organic solvents and exhibited high glass transition temperature and thermal stability. The copolymer films showed absorption peaks from 381 nm to 351 nm, and PL peaks from 432 nm to 421 nm with a blue shift originated from 35C8 units. Both the HOMO energy levels and LUMO levels changed little as the content of 35C8 units increased (?5.59 eV to ?5.48 eV and ?2.60 eV to ?2.49 eV). Electroluminescent devices: ITO/PEDOT:PSS[poly(ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate]/polymer/Ca (25 nm)/Ag(80 nm) (a), ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/TPBI [1,3,5‐ tris(N‐phenylbenzimidazol‐2‐yl)benzene](15 nm)/Mg:Ag(10:1, wt)/Ag (b), and ITO/ PEDOT:PSS/PVK[Poly(N‐vinylcarbazole)]/polymer/TPBI(15 nm)/Ca(25 nm)/Ag(80 nm) (c) were fabricated to investigate the influence of jacketed contents and device architectures on emission characteristics. The maximum brightness and current efficiency of the PC8OF25 device (5097.8 cd/m2 and 0.484 cd/A) surpassed those of the PC8OF0 device (3122.8 cd/m2 and 0.416 cd/A). The EL emissions of PC8OF0 – PC8OF50 were pure blue and low‐energy excimer emission bands were successfully suppressed, indicating that these copolymers could be good candidates for blue light‐emitting materials. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three new conjugated poly(p‐phenylene vinylene) (PPV) derivatives bearing triphenylamine side‐chain through a vinylene bridge, poly(2‐(4′‐(diphenylamino)phenylenevinyl)‐1,4‐phenylene‐vinylene) (DP‐PPV), poly(2‐(3′‐(3″,7″‐dimethyloctyloxy)phenyl)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene‐alt‐2‐(4′‐ (diphenylamino)phenylenevinyl)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene) (DODP‐PPV), and poly(2‐(4′‐(diphenylamino)phenylenevinyl)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene‐co‐2‐(3′,5′‐bis(3″,7″‐dimethyloctyloxy)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene) (DP‐co‐BD‐PPV), were synthesized according to the Gilch or Wittig method. Among the three polymers, the copolymer DP‐co‐BD‐PPV is soluble in common solvents with good thermal stability with 5% weight loss at temperatures higher than 386°C. The weight‐average molecular weight (Mw) and polydispersity index (PDI) of DP‐co‐BD‐PPV were 1.83 × 105 and 2.33, respectively. The single‐layer polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLEDs) with the configuration of Indium tin oxide (ITO)/poly (3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(4‐styrene sulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS)/DP‐co‐BD‐PPV/Ca/Al were fabricated. The PLED emitted yellow‐green light with the turn‐on voltage of ca. 4.9 V, the maximum luminance of ca. 990 cd/m2 at 15.8 V, and the maximum electroluminescence (EL) efficiency of 0.22 cd/A. The synthesis of new random poly(2,7‐fluorenylene‐vinylene)s was achieved by a Suzuki–Heck cascade polymerization reaction. The poly(fluorenylene‐vinylene) base structure was modified by the regio‐random incorporation of 1‐cyano‐2,5‐phenylene as electron withdrawing unit ( CN‐PFV1 ) and its properties were compared with terpolymers also embodying 1,4‐dioctyloxy‐2,5‐phenylene ( CN‐PFV2 ) or 3,6‐N‐octylcarbazole ( CN‐PFV3 ) as electron‐donating moieties. Thermal analysis revealed a high thermal stability (Td > 389 °C) and the absence of glass transitions for all polymers. Cyclic voltammetry indicated a high electron affinity of the materials (2.96–3.21 eV) attributed to the presence of the cyano‐containing comonomer. In dilute solutions, the copolymers showed a broad green fluorescence with quantum yields ranging from 0.42 to 0.79, while in the solid state, a relatively narrow emission centered at ~ 560 nm, governed by the low‐energy segments within the π‐conjugated backbone, was observed. The electroluminescence properties of the materials were tested in OLED devices of ITO/PEDOT‐PSS/ CN‐PFV1‐3 /Ca/Al or ITO/PEDOT‐PSS/ CN‐PFV1‐3 /Alq3/Ca/Al configurations, showing a bright green‐yellow emission that, in the case of CN‐PFV2 , reached 1403 cd/m2 with efficiencies as high as 0.13 cd/A. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, the optical, electrochemical, electrolumiscent, and photovoltaic properties of a series of poly(p‐phenylene vinylene) (PPV) derivatives bearing different dendritic pendants, poly{2‐[3′,5′‐bis(2″‐ethylhexyloxy)benzyloxy]‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene} (BE‐PPV), poly{2‐[2′,5′‐bis(3″,7″‐dimethyl)octyloxy]‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene} (BD‐PPV), poly[2‐methoxy‐5‐(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene] (MEH‐PPV), poly{2‐[3′,5′‐bis(2″‐ethylhexyloxy)benzyloxy]‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene}‐co‐poly[2‐methoxy‐5‐(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene] (BE‐co‐MEH‐PPV), and poly{2‐[2′,5′‐bis(3″,7″‐dimethyl)octyloxy]‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene}‐co‐poly[2‐methoxy‐5‐(3′,7′‐dimethyloctyloxy)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene] (BD‐co‐MDMO‐PPV), were investigated. The steric pendants strongly affect the absorption spectra, photoluminescence (PL) sepctra, the onset oxidation/reduction potentials, and further affect the electrolumiscent and photovoltaic properties. Copolymerization can reduce the steric effect and improve the electrolumiscent and photovoltaic properties. The brightness of light‐emitting diodes base on copolymer BE‐co‐MEH‐PPV and BD‐co‐MDMO‐PPV reached 3988 and 3864 cd/m2, respectively, much higher than that based on homopolymer BE‐PPV (523 cd/m2) and BD‐PPV (333 cd/m2), also higher than that based on MEH‐PPV (3788 cd/m2). The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of solar cells based on BE‐co‐MEH‐PPV and BD‐co‐MDMO‐PPV reached 1.41, 0.76%, respectively, much higher than that based on BE‐PPV (0.24%) and BD‐PPV (0.14%).
