Dispersion characteristics and wave impedance for the even and odd modes of the broad side coupled dielectric image guides are computed by using mode matching techniques. Dispersion curves for broadside image guide are plotted for various dielectric materials and dimensional parameters as a function of frequency. Normalized electric field for dominant electric field component E of TM even and odd modes for various half spacings between two dielectric slabs of broadside coupled image guide have been plotted. Polysterene ( r=2.56) and Stycast ( r=3.4) have been used as dielectric materials in fabricating broadside coupled image guide. This broadside coupled dielectric guide is very convenient as compared to the other dielectric guides. Since in case of broadside coupled image guide the dielectric slab can be bonded to the side metallic walls using some low loss adhesive material, while in other coupled dielectric guides the dielectric slab have to be supported by some low dielectric constant material (Eccofoam with r=1.02) to maintain the proper distance of side metallic walls from the dielectric slab. Since this structure is symmetrical, this configuration can be analysed in terms of even and odd mode phase velocities. The difference in these even and off mode phase velocities can be used to determine the coupling between coupled dielectric slab. Various couplers in this configuration can be realised. 相似文献

A numerical investigation of nonlinear switching in plasmonic directional couplers made of two dielectric slab waveguides with metallic claddings is presented. We assume Kerr-nonlinear dielectric and study the influence of geometrical parameters, metallic losses, and metal nonlinearities on coupler characteristics. We observe a general trade-off between losses and nonlinearity levels required for the switching operation. Underlying physical mechanisms that affect the coupler performance are discussed. The obtained results can be useful in design and optimization of the nonlinear plasmonic couplers. 相似文献

Directional couplers in image guide technique for millimeter-wave circuits are discussed, and steps to improve their properties are demonstrated. The simple two-line-9 dB coupler with periodical coupling is compared to a design with an intermediate dielectric coupling element to reduce the frequency dependence. Radiation from the waveguide bends can be reduced significantly by inserting absorber materials at critical points. Experimental results for a-3 dB coupler are also given. 相似文献

We study the coupling interaction between dielectric waveguides and coupling elements made from negative-refracting media.
The coupling configuration consists of a length of dielectric waveguide, which terminates either directly into or near a planar
layer composed of the negative-refracting medium, and is followed by a second waveguide. Radiation output from the first waveguide
is refocused at the position of the second waveguide, so that the negative-refracting layer serves as a coupler between the
waveguides. Because both isotropic negative-index layers and bilayers of indefinite media can recover the near-field, evanescent
components of a source field distribution, the coupling between the input and output waveguides can be highly efficient –
in principle providing perfect, lossless coupling. We present simulations and some initial experimental results illustrating
the coupling effect, and speculate on the potential for optical fiber couplers and integrated modulators.

The band structures and equifrequency contours of one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs), which consist of an electromagnetically
induced transparency (EIT) medium and a common dielectric medium, can be dramatically changed by tuning the coupling field
intensity (or coupling Rabi frequency, CRF) of the EIT medium. It is found that for a probe light at a fixed frequency, either
positive or negative refraction in the EIT PC can be realized with a proper CRF. The behavior of a Gaussian beam (probe light)
obliquely incident on such an EIT PC slab is simulated numerically. The probe light beam transmitted from the slab can be
shifted transversely in a large range, and negative refraction enhances this effect. The present scenario can be applied in

Using an iterated moment method (weighted index method), formulae are derived for the accurate calculation of the dispersion characteristics and field distributions of guided modes in strip dielectric waveguides and strip-loaded waveguides, and for the calculation of the coupling length of rectangular-core dual-channel directional couplers. The formulae are simple and the results obtained by the present analysis agree well with computer-aided exact numerical analysis. We fabricate and characterize one-dimensional magnetic (rather than dielectric) photonic crystals for the first time. Our model system is a one-dimensional periodic lattice of gold-wire pairs. Each pair can be viewed as a magnetic coil with two slits and represents a "magnetic atom." Strong coupling between the resulting magnetic-dipole resonance and the Bragg resonance is accomplished by an adjacent dielectric slab waveguide, giving rise to an avoided crossing at near-infrared wavelengths. This paper describes the analysis of dielectric resonator filters with printed tuning septum in waveguide sections operating below cutoff. In this design approach a thick dielectric slab of high permittivity is placed longitudinally in the waveguide. A bilateral ladder-shaped metallization determines the resonator and coupling sections (modified finline filter). In contrast to conventional dielectric resonator filters, this approach provides better passband separation and increased stopband attenuation. Furthermore, due to the bilateral tuning septum, the resonator and coupling sections can be manufactured accurately with photolithographic techniques rather than by expensive machining. 相似文献

Prism-film couplers are used to couple light beams into and out of a 80 μm thick quartz slab. The pressure which is absolutely necessary to exert on the prisms in order to obtain a good coupling efficiency, induces important stresses in the anisotopic medium. The optical modes in a dielectric slab are considerably changed by replacing the dielectric medium on one side of the slab by a metal. In particular, the TH mode m = 0 shows the behavior of a surface plasma wave. The modes were excited in a reflection experiment by the use of prism film coupling in an Al-LiF-air system, the results are in satisfactory agreement with theory. 相似文献

In earlier papers, we have applied multiple-scattering techniques to calculate Casimir forces due to scalar fields between different bodies described by delta function potentials. When the coupling to the potentials became weak, closed-form results were obtained. We simplify this weak-coupling technique and apply it to the case of tenuous dielectric bodies, in which case the method involves the summation of van der Waals (Casimir-Polder) interactions. Once again, exact results for finite bodies can be obtained. We present closed formulas describing the interaction between spheres, between cylinders, and between an infinite plate and a rectangular slab of finite size. For such a slab, we consider the torque acting on it and find that nontrivial equilibrium points can occur. 相似文献

The coupling ratio of directional couplers in Z-cut Y-propagation and X-cut Z-propagation LiNbO3 crystals was adjusted by laser ablation. The coupling ratio change is more efficient for the TM-mode of Z-cut couplers. A new millimeter wave leaky wave antenna is presented in this paper, which is a modification of the groove guide with an asymmetric
conductor strip by introducing a dielectric slab into the conductor plane region of the groove guide antenna. The leakage
property of the new antenna is carefully examined through calculations of an equivalent network, which is developed here with
taking into account the coupling between different modes to guarantee the calculating accuracy. It has been found that the

Experiments were carried out to verify models of the reflection coefficients and the phase transitions for matched or loaded dielectric-filled waveguide couplers in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF). A model for the plasma load simulation in the waveguide is developed and examined permanently using the time-domain features of an HP·8510 network analyzer. The loss properties of deionized water, which was used for laboratory waveguide dielectric tests, are also discussed. Close agreement between the coupling models and measurements is noted. For a matched coupler, the optimal power-coupling efficiency obtained is 95% and for a simulated-plasma loaded coupler this value is in the range of 80%, depending upon the plasma load. If it is assumed that the effects of the high neutron flux present in a reactor environment on the dielectric strength of water are negligible (or eliminated), and that the dielectric breakdown strength of water is approximately 3 kV/cm at nearly 80% coupling efficiency, the power handling capability of the water-filled coupler is estimated to be in the range of 3-6 MW 相似文献

We present the design and fabrication of a single-mode slab waveguide structure for mid-infrared spectroscopy optimized for broadband coupling. The sensor uses grating couplers for robust off-axis coupling and a silicon nitride guiding layer for mechanical robustness. An external cavity quantum cascade laser-based transmission method is introduced for characterizing the structure’s broadband coupling behavior. Light from an external cavity quantum cascade laser with a spectral range of 0.5 μm around 6 μm was coupled into the waveguide without the need for moving parts. The coupling and radiation characteristics of an improved dielectric waveguide directional coupler with a tapering left-handed
slab core located in the coupling region are analyzed by the staircase approximation method, which combines the building block
approach and multi-mode network theory with a rigorous mode-matching procedure. Particular attentions are directed toward
the radiation characteristics under different structural parameters of the coupler. Numerical results indicate that the proposed
