The fundamentals of interval analysis on directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) for global optimization and constraint propagation have recently been proposed in Schichl and Neumaier (J. Global Optim. 33, 541–562, 2005). For representing numerical problems, the authors use DAGs whose nodes are subexpressions and whose directed edges are computational flows. Compared to tree-based representations [Benhamou et al. Proceedings of the International Conference on Logic Programming (ICLP’99), pp. 230–244. Las Cruces, USA (1999)], DAGs offer the essential advantage of more accurately handling the influence of subexpressions shared by several constraints on the overall system during propagation. In this paper we show how interval constraint propagation and search on DAGs can be made practical and efficient by: (1) flexibly choosing the nodes on which propagations must be performed, and (2) working with partial subgraphs of the initial DAG rather than with the entire graph. We propose a new interval constraint propagation technique which exploits the influence of subexpressions on all the constraints together rather than on individual constraints. We then show how the new propagation technique can be integrated into branch-and-prune search to solve numerical constraint satisfaction problems. This algorithm is able to outperform its obvious contenders, as shown by the experiments.  相似文献

Over the last few decades several methods have been proposed for handling functional constraints while solving optimization problems using evolutionary algorithms (EAs). However, the presence of equality constraints makes the feasible space very small compared to the entire search space. As a consequence, the handling of equality constraints has long been a difficult issue for evolutionary optimization methods. This paper presents a Hybrid Evolutionary Algorithm (HEA) for solving optimization problems with both equality and inequality constraints. In HEA, we propose a new local search technique with special emphasis on equality constraints. The basic concept of the new technique is to reach a point on the equality constraint from the current position of an individual solution, and then explore on the constraint landscape. We believe this new concept will influence the future research direction for constrained optimization using population based algorithms. The proposed algorithm is tested on a set of standard benchmark problems. The results show that the proposed technique works very well on those benchmark problems.  相似文献

Constraint Programming typically uses the technique of depth-first branch and bound as the method of solving optimization problems. Although this method can give the optimal solution, for large problems, the time needed to find the optimal can be prohibitive. This paper introduces a method for using local search techniques within a Constraint Programming framework, and applies this technique to vehicle routing problems. We introduce a Constraint Programming model for vehicle routing, and a system for integrating Constraint Programming and local search techniques. We then describe how the method can be accelerated by handling core constraints using fast local checks, while other more complex constraints are left to the constraint propagation system. We have coupled our local search method with a meta-heuristic to avoid the search being trapped in local minima. Several meta-heuristics are investigated ranging from a simple Tabu Search method to Guided Local Search. An empirical study over benchmark problems shows the relative merits of these techniques. Investigations indicate that the specific long-term memory technique used by Guided Local Search can be used as a diversification method for Tabu Search, resulting in significant benefit. Several new best solutions on the Solomon problems are found in relatively few iterations of our algorithm.  相似文献

We present a new strategy for the constrained global optimization of expensive black box functions using response surface models. A response surface model is simply a multivariate approximation of a continuous black box function which is used as a surrogate model for optimization in situations where function evaluations are computationally expensive. Prior global optimization methods that utilize response surface models were limited to box-constrained problems, but the new method can easily incorporate general nonlinear constraints. In the proposed method, which we refer to as the Constrained Optimization using Response Surfaces (CORS) Method, the next point for costly function evaluation is chosen to be the one that minimizes the current response surface model subject to the given constraints and to additional constraints that the point be of some distance from previously evaluated points. The distance requirement is allowed to cycle, starting from a high value (global search) and ending with a low value (local search). The purpose of the constraint is to drive the method towards unexplored regions of the domain and to prevent the premature convergence of the method to some point which may not even be a local minimizer of the black box function. The new method can be shown to converge to the global minimizer of any continuous function on a compact set regardless of the response surface model that is used. Finally, we considered two particular implementations of the CORS method which utilize a radial basis function model (CORS-RBF) and applied it on the box-constrained Dixon–Szegö test functions and on a simple nonlinearly constrained test function. The results indicate that the CORS-RBF algorithms are competitive with existing global optimization algorithms for costly functions on the box-constrained test problems. The results also show that the CORS-RBF algorithms are better than other algorithms for constrained global optimization on the nonlinearly constrained test problem.  相似文献

The conceptual design of aircraft often entails a large number of nonlinear constraints that result in a nonconvex feasible design space and multiple local optima. The design of the high-speed civil transport (HSCT) is used as an example of a highly complex conceptual design with 26 design variables and 68 constraints. This paper compares three global optimization techniques on the HSCT problem and two test problems containing thousands of local optima and noise: multistart local optimizations using either sequential quadratic programming (SQP) as implemented in the design optimization tools (DOT) program or Snyman's dynamic search method, and a modified form of Jones' DIRECT global optimization algorithm. SQP is a local optimizer, while Snyman's algorithm is capable of moving through shallow local minima. The modified DIRECT algorithm is a global search method based on Lipschitzian optimization that locates small promising regions of design space and then uses a local optimizer to converge to the optimum. DOT and the dynamic search algorithms proved to be superior for finding a single optimum masked by noise of trigonometric form. The modified DIRECT algorithm was found to be better for locating the global optimum of functions with many widely separated true local optima.  相似文献

Many real-life problems are over-constrained, so that no solution satisfying all their constraints exists. Soft constraints, with costs denoting how much the constraints are violated, are used to solve these problems. We use the edit-distance based SoftRegular constraint as an example to show that a propagation algorithm that sometimes underestimates the cost may guide the search to incorrect (non-optimal) solutions to an over-constrained problem. To compute correctly the cost for the edit-distance based SoftRegular constraint, we present a quadratic-time propagation algorithm based on dynamic programming and a proof of its correctness. We also give an improved propagation algorithm using an idea of computing the edit distance between two strings, which may also be applied to other constraints with propagators based on dynamic programming. The asymptotic time complexity of our improved propagator is always at least as good as the one of our quadratic-time propagator, but significantly better when the edit distance is small. Our propagators achieve domain consistency on the problem variables and bounds consistency on the cost variable. Our method can also be adapted for the violation measure of the edit-distance based Regular constraint for constraint-based local search.  相似文献

This paper proposes a new algorithm for solving constrained global optimization problems where both the objective function and constraints are one-dimensional non-differentiable multiextremal Lipschitz functions. Multiextremal constraints can lead to complex feasible regions being collections of isolated points and intervals having positive lengths. The case is considered where the order the constraints are evaluated is fixed by the nature of the problem and a constraint i is defined only over the set where the constraint i−1 is satisfied. The objective function is defined only over the set where all the constraints are satisfied. In contrast to traditional approaches, the new algorithm does not use any additional parameter or variable. All the constraints are not evaluated during every iteration of the algorithm providing a significant acceleration of the search. The new algorithm either finds lower and upper bounds for the global optimum or establishes that the problem is infeasible. Convergence properties and numerical experiments showing a nice performance of the new method in comparison with the penalty approach are given. Constraint Programming Based Column Generation for Crew Assignment   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Airline crew assignment problems are large-scale optimization problems which can be adequately solved by column generation. The subproblem is typically a so-called constrained shortest path problem and solved by dynamic programming. However, complex airline regulations arising frequently in European airlines cannot be expressed entirely in this framework and limit the use of pure column generation. In this paper, we formulate the subproblem as a constraint satisfaction problem, thus gaining high expressiveness. Each airline regulation is encoded by one or several constraints. An additional constraint which encapsulates a shortest path algorithm for generating columns with negative reduced costs is introduced. This constraint reduces the search space of the subproblem significantly. Resulting domain reductions are propagated to the other constraints which additionally reduces the search space. Numerical results based on data of a large European airline are presented and demonstrate the potential of our approach.  相似文献

Some constraint problems have a combinatorial structure where the constraints allow the sequence of variables to be rotated (necklaces), if not also the domain values to be permuted (unlabelled necklaces), without getting an essentially different solution. We bring together the fields of combinatorial enumeration, where efficient algorithms have been designed for (special cases of) some of these combinatorial objects, and constraint programming, where the requisite symmetry breaking has at best been done statically so far. We design the first search procedure and identify the first symmetry-breaking constraints for the general case of unlabelled necklaces. Further, we compare dynamic and static symmetry breaking on real-life scheduling problems featuring (unlabelled) necklaces.  相似文献

In this paper we present a method called NOVEL (Nonlinear Optimization via External Lead) forsolving continuous and discrete global optimization problems. NOVEL addresses the balance between global search and local search, using a trace to aid in identifying promising regions before committing to local searches. We discuss NOVEL for solving continuous constrained optimization problems and show how it can be extended to solve constrained satisfaction and discrete satisfiability problems. We first transform the problem using Lagrange multipliers into an unconstrained version. Since a stable solution in a Lagrangian formulation only guarantees a local optimum satisfying the constraints, we propose a global search phase in which an aperiodic and bounded trace function is added to the search to first identify promising regions for local search. The trace generates an information-bearing trajectory from which good starting points are identified for further local searches. Taking only a small portion of the total search time, this elegant approach significantly reduces unnecessary local searches in regions leading to the same local optimum. We demonstrate the effectiveness of NOVEL on a collection of continuous optimization benchmark problems, finding the same or better solutions while satisfying the constraints. We extend NOVEL to discrete constraint satisfaction problems (CPSs) by showing an efficient transformation method for CSPs and the associated representation in finite-difference equations in NOVEL. We apply NOVEL to solve Boolean satisfiability instances in circuit fault detection and circuit synthesis applications, and show comparable performance when compared to the best existing method.  相似文献

This paper presents a multiobjective search algorithm with subdivision technique (MOSAST) for the global solution of multiobjective constrained optimization problems with possibly noncontinuous objective or constraint functions. This method is based on a random search method and a new version of the Graef-Younes algorithm and it uses a subdivision technique. Numerical results are given for bicriterial test problems.

Typically local search methods for solving constraint satisfaction problems such as GSAT, WalkSAT, DLM, and ESG treat the problem as an optimisation problem. Each constraint contributes part of a penalty function in assessing trial valuations. Local search examines the neighbours of the current valuation, using the penalty function to determine a “better” neighbour valuation to move to, until finally a solution which satisfies all the constraints is found. In this paper we investigate using some of the constraints as “hard” constraints, that are always satisfied by every trial valuation visited, rather than as part of a penalty function. In this way these constraints reduce the possible neighbours in each move and also the overall search space. The treating of some constraints as hard requires that the space of valuations that are satisfied is “connected” in order to guarantee that a solution can be found from any starting position within the region; thus the concept of islands and the name “island confinement method” arises. Treating some constraints as hard provides new difficulties for the search mechanism since the search space becomes more jagged, and there are more deep local minima. A new escape strategy is needed. To demonstrate the feasibility and generality of our approach, we show how the island confinement method can be incorporated in, and significantly improve, the search performance of two successful local search procedures, DLM and ESG, on SAT problems arising from binary CSPs. A preliminary version of this paper appeared in AAAI’2002.  相似文献

This paper presents the use of surrogate constraints and Lagrange multipliers to generate advanced starting solutions to constrained network problems. The surrogate constraint approach is used to generate a singly constrained network problem which is solved using the algorithm of Glover, Karney, Klingman and Russell [13]. In addition, we test the use of the Lagrangian function to generate advanced starting solutions. In the Lagrangian approach, the subproblems are capacitated network problems which can be solved using very efficient algorithms. The surrogate constraint approach is implemented using the multiplier update procedure of Held, Wolfe and Crowder [16]. The procedure is modified to include a search in a single direction to prevent periodic regression of the solution. We also introduce a reoptimization procedure which allows the solution from thekth subproblem to be used as the starting point for the next surrogate problem for which it is infeasible once the new surrogate constraint is adjoined. The algorithms are tested under a variety of conditions including: large-scale problems, number and structure of the non-network constraints, and the density of the non-network constraint coefficients. The testing clearly demonstrates that both the surrogate constraint and Langrange multipliers generate advanced starting solutions which greatly improve the computational effort required to generate an optimal solution to the constrained network problem. The testing demonstrates that the extra effort required to solve the singly constrained network subproblems of the surrogate constraints approach yields an improved advanced starting point as compared to the Lagrangian approach. It is further demonstrated that both of the relaxation approaches are much more computationally efficient than solving the problem from the beginning with a linear programming algorithm.  相似文献

For some optimal control problems with pathwise state constraints the standard versions of the necessary conditions of optimality are unable to provide useful information to select minimizers. There exist some literature on stronger forms of the maximum principle, the so-called nondegenerate necessary conditions, that can be informative for those problems. These conditions can be applied when certain constraint qualifications are satisfied. However, when the state constraints have higher index (i.e. their first derivative with respect to time does not depend on the control) these nondegenerate necessary conditions cannot be used. This happens because constraint qualifications assumptions are never satisfied for higher index state constraints. We note that control problems with higher index state constraints arise frequently in practice. An example is a common mechanical systems for which there is a constraint on the position (an obstacle in the path, for example) and the control acts as a second derivative of the position (a force or acceleration) which is a typical case. Here, we provide a nondegenerate form of the necessary conditions that can be applied to nonlinear problems with higher index state constraints. When addressing a problem with a state constraint of index k, the result described is applicable under a constraint qualification that involves the k -th derivative of the state constraint, corresponding to the first time when derivative depends explicitly on the control. In this paper, the nonlinear minimax problems with inequality constraints are discussed, and a sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm with a generalized monotone line search is presented. At each iteration, a feasible direction of descent is obtained by solving a quadratic programming (QP). To avoid the Maratos effect, a high order correction direction is achieved by solving another QP. As a result, the proposed algorithm has global and superlinear convergence. Especially, the global convergence is obtained under a weak Mangasarian–Fromovitz constraint qualification (MFCQ) instead of the linearly independent constraint qualification (LICQ). At last, its numerical effectiveness is demonstrated with test examples.  相似文献

In case a CSP is over-constrained, it is natural to allow some constraints, called soft constraints, to be violated. We propose a generic method to soften global constraints that can be represented by a flow in a graph. Such constraints are softened by adding violation arcs to the graph and then computing a minimum-weight flow in the extended graph to measure the violation. We present efficient propagation algorithms, based on different violation measures, achieving domain consistency for the alldifferent constraint, the global cardinality constraint, the regular constraint and the same constraint. This paper presents constraint programming (CP) as a natural formalism for modelling problems, and as a flexible platform for solving them. CP has a range of techniques for handling constraints including several forms of propagation and tailored algorithms for global constraints. It also allows linear programming to be combined with propagation and novel and varied search techniques which can be easily expressed in CP. The paper describes how CP can be used to exploit linear programming within different kinds of hybrid algorithm. In particular it can enhance techniques such as Lagrangian relaxation, Benders decomposition and column generation.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a general approach for solving constraint problems by local search. The proposed approach is based on a set of high-level constraint primitives motivated by constraint programming systems. These constraints constitute the basic bricks to formulate a given combinatorial problem. A tabu search engine ensures the resolution of the problem so formulated. Experimental results are shown to validate the proposed approach. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Based on the ideas of norm-relaxed sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method and the strongly sub-feasible direction method, we propose a new SQP algorithm for the solution of nonlinear inequality constrained optimization. Unlike the previous work, at each iteration, the norm-relaxed quadratic programming subproblem (NRQPS) in our algorithm only consists of the constraints corresponding to an estimate of the active set, and the high-order correction direction (used to avoid the Maratos effect) is obtained by solving a system of linear equations (SLE) which also only consists of such a subset of constraints and gradients. Moreover, the line search technique can effectively combine the initialization process with the optimization process, and therefore (if the starting point is not feasible) the iteration points always get into the feasible set after a finite number of iterations. The global convergence is proved under the Mangasarian–Fromovitz constraint qualification (MFCQ), and the superlinear convergence is obtained without assuming the strict complementarity. Finally, the numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm is effective and promising for the test problems.  相似文献
