Excitation of the 5p<Superscript>5</Superscript>7p levels of xenon by electron impact

We have used our relativistic distorted-wave method to calculate cross sections for the electron-impact excitation of the ground state of xenon to all the 5p ⁵7p fine-structure levels. The results are compared with the recent experimental measurements of Jung et al. [Phys. Rev. A 80, 062708 (2009)]. Analytic fits to our cross sections are also provided for use in plasma modeling studies.     

Electron impact excitation with the cascade population of the 4<Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis><Superscript>5</Superscript> 5<Emphasis Type="Italic">s</Emphasis> levels of the krypton atom

Data are presented on the direct and effective, i.e., including the cascade population, electronic excitation cross sections of the 4p ⁵5s levels of the krypton atom from its ground state by the electron impact. The data are made up of the results available in the literature on this process and the results of the measurements performed by the authors.     

Electron impact excitation cross sections of <Superscript>1</Superscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">F</Emphasis><Superscript>o</Superscript> levels of the strontium atom

The behavior of excitation cross sections of the strontium atom was studied experimentally in the spectral series 5s4d¹D₂-5snf¹F ₃ ^o in the range n = 4–26, and also the optical excitation functions for lines in the same series in the range n = 4–12. It was established that the beginning of the series is perturbed. The effect of the perturbation is manifested both in the irregular course of the dependence of the absolute values of the cross sections on n, and in the difference between the shapes of the optical excitation functions for different terms of the series. Hyperfine quenching of the 4s4p <Superscript>3</Superscript>P<Subscript>0</Subscript> level in Zn-like ions

In this paper, we used the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method to compute with high precision the influence of the hyperfine interaction on the [Ar] P₀ level lifetime in Zn-like ions for stable and some quasi-stable isotopes of nonzero nuclear spin between Z=30 and Z=92. The influence of this interaction on the [Ar] P P₀ separation energy is also calculated for the same ions.     

Asymmetry of hyperfine-structure components of the 5 <Superscript>1</Superscript>S<Subscript>0</Subscript>-5<Superscript>3</Superscript>P<Subscript>1</Subscript><Superscript>113</Superscript>Cd line perturbed by argon

Experimental results of a systematic study of profiles of the hyperfine-structure components of the intercombination 5¹S₀ – 5 ³P₁ line of the even-odd ¹¹³Cd isotope perturbed by argon performed by means of a laser-induced fluorescence method are reported. We have found that the values of total line asymmetries of both hfs line components are different.     

Electron impact dissociation of ND<Superscript>+</Superscript>: formation of D<Superscript>+</Superscript>

Absolute cross sections for electron impact dissociation of ND⁺ leading to the formation of D⁺ have been measured by applying the animated electron-ion beam method in the energy range from the reaction threshold up to 2.5 keV. The maximum inclusive cross section is observed to be (16.8 ± 0.8) × 10⁻¹⁷ cm² at the electron energy of 65.1 eV. The appearance energy for the D⁺ production is measured to be (4.0 ± 0.5) eV. Collected data are analyzed in details by means of an original procedure in order to determine separately the contributions of dissociative channels. A specific Monte Carlo modeling has been developed, which is proven to reconstruct adequately the dissociative ionization cross section. The present energy thresholds provide information about the ground and excited states of the molecular ion, as well as about the possible population of the vibrational levels. The reaction D₂(v) + N⁺ (or H₂(v) + N⁺) is a probable source for that population and it constitutes the first step of the molecular activated processes, so the corresponding chain of reactions has to be considered to study the chemistry of plasma sources.     

The excitation cross section of cadmium atoms from metastable 5<Emphasis Type="Italic">s</Emphasis>5<Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis><Superscript>3</Superscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">P</Emphasis><Subscript>0, 2</Subscript> states by electron impact

By means of the optical method using the technique of crossed electron and atomic beams, we obtained the absolute values of the excitation cross sections of metastable cadmium atoms and their energy dependences. The absolute cross section values reach ∼10⁻¹⁶ cm² (at 30 eV). Sharp resonance-like maxima are observed in the energy dependences of the excitation cross section near the excitation thresholds, which are supposedly related to the formation and decay of negative-ion excited states of.     

Fragmentation of <Superscript>7</Superscript>Li relativistic nuclei on a proton into the <Superscript>3</Superscript>H + <Superscript>4</Superscript>He channel

In a track nuclear photoemulsion exposed to a beam of ⁷Li nuclei accelerated to a momentum of 3 GeV/c per nucleon at the synchrophasotron of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Dubna), 13 events in which ⁷Li nuclei interacting with protons break up into ³H and ⁴He fragments were detected among 3730 inelastic-interaction events. For this fragmentation channel, the cross section was found to be 8 ± 2 mb. The average value of the fragment total transverse momentum was 214 ± 5 MeV/c. This value exceeds markedly the average value of the transverse-momentum transfer in the coherent dissociation of ⁷Li nuclei on track-emulsion nuclei (166±5MeV/c). The recoil-proton transverse momentum was on average 98% of the total proton momentum. The longitudinal-momentum distribution of protons was characterized by a variance of 16 MeV/c and a mean value of 37 ± 2MeV/c.     

Pressure broadening of hyperfine-structure components of the 5 <Superscript>1</Superscript>S<Subscript>0</Subscript>– 5 <Superscript>3</Superscript>P<Subscript>1</Subscript><Superscript>113</Superscript>Cd line perturbed by argon

Experimental results of a spectroscopic study of argon broadened profiles of the hyperfine-structure components of the intercombination 326.1 nm line ¹¹³Cd isotope are reported. We have found that the values of Lorentzian (collisional) widths of both hfs line components are different.     

Experimental lifetimes of some levels belonging to the 4<Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis><Superscript>4</Superscript>5<Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis> configuration of KrII using the cascade-photon-coincidence technique

Lifetimes of three levels belonging to the 4p ⁴5p configuration of singly ionized krypton have been measured using the cascade-photon-coincidence technique. The measurements have been performed under experimental condition where pressure dependent effect as well as other systematic errors are very small. The results have been compared with other experimental and theoretical values.     

<Superscript>4</Superscript>He<Superscript>3</Superscript>H<Superscript>2</Superscript>H three-body model of the <Superscript>9</Superscript>Be nucleus

Within the framework of the single-channel approximation, an {αtd} model of the ⁹ Be nucleus is presented. A comparative analysis of the t ⁶ Li wave functions describing relative motion of bound states constructed in {ααn} and {αtd} cluster representations is carried out on the example of calculations of the ⁹ Be(γ,t₀)⁶ Li process characteristics. __________ Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 1, pp. 85–89, January, 2008.     

Electron-impact excitation of barium atoms from metastable 5 <Superscript>3</Superscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">D</Emphasis><Subscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">J</Emphasis></Subscript> states

The excitation of spectral transitions of barium atoms from the 5³ D _J states by electron impact has been studied experimentally. The absolute values of the interaction cross sections and their energy dependences have been determined. The results obtained have been compared with theoretical calculations both by the classical Born approximation method and by the R-matrix method using the multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock wave functions of a target.     

Spectroscopy of superheavy hydrogen isotopes <Superscript>4</Superscript>H and <Superscript>5</Superscript>H

The superheavy hydrogen isotopes ⁴H and ⁵H have been investigated in the stopped pion absorption on ⁹Be. Three states of ⁴H were proposed in the reaction channel ⁹Be( ^{{ - }}, dt)X. Four states of ⁵H were proposed in the reaction channels ⁹Be(^{{ - }}, pt)X and ⁹Be(^{{ - }}, dt)X. The excited states of ⁵H can decay into free nucleons.     

Inelastic excitation of <Superscript>187</Superscript>Re

Excited states in ¹⁸⁷Re populated by inelastic scattering of a 500 MeV ⁸²Se beam have been studied by means of in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy. Levels built on the 5/2⁺[402] and 9/2^-[514] one-quasiparticle states were measured up to I ^π = (21/2⁺) and (21/2^-), respectively. In addition, several new levels including an isomer at 1682 keV with a half-life of 114(23) ns have been found. Quasiparticle configurations of the levels and the transition rates are discussed. Role of the nuclear and electromagnetic interactions in the coherent dissociation of the relativistic <Superscript>7</Superscript>Li nucleus into the <Superscript>3</Superscript>H + <Superscript>4</Superscript>He channel

The differential cross section in the transverse momentum Q and a total cross section of (31 ± 4) mb for the coherent dissociation of a 3-A-Ge V/c ⁷Li nucleus through the ³H + ⁴He channel have been measured on emulsion nuclei. The observed Q dependence of the cross section is explained by the predominant supposition of the nuclear diffraction patterns on light (C, N, O) and heavy (Br, Ag) emulsion nuclei. The contributions to the cross section from nuclear diffraction (Q ≤ 400 Me V/c) and Coulomb (Q ≤ 50 Me V/c) dissociations are calculated to be 40.7 and 4 mb, respectively.     

Mapping of the <Superscript>12</Superscript>C* states via the <Superscript>10</Superscript>B(<Superscript>3</Superscript>He,pααα) reaction

We have studied ¹²C in full kinematics via the ¹⁰B(³He,pααα) reaction at an energy of 2.45 MeV. In our data we have identified states in ¹²C from the ground state up to about 18 MeV, with spins ranging from 0 to 4. Due to the very good resolution, we are able to determine properties of these ¹²C resonances, such as their energy, width, and spin. In this contribution preliminary results from the ongoing analysis are presented. Main focus on the precise determination of the breakup spectra for all resonances.
