"Janus" particles with two hemispheres of different polarizability or charge demonstrate a multitude of interesting effects in external electric fields. We reported earlier how particles with one metallic hemisphere and one dielectric hemisphere self-propel in low-frequency alternating current (AC) electric fields. Here, we demonstrate the assembly of such Janus particles driven by AC electric fields at frequencies above 10 kHz. We investigated the relation between field-induced dielectrophoretic force, field distribution, and structure of the assemblies. The phase space for electric field intensity and frequency was explored for particle concentrations large enough to form a monolayer on a glass surface between two gold electrodes. A rich variety of metallodielectric particle structures and dynamics were uncovered, which are very different from those obtained from directed assembly of plain dielectric or plain conductive particles under the action of fields of similar frequency and intensity. The metallodielectric particles assemble into new types of chain structures, where the metallized halves of neighboring particles align into lanes along the direction of the electric field, while the dielectric halves face in alternating direction. The staggered chains may assemble in various orientations to form different types of two-dimensional metallodielectric crystals. The experimental results on the formation of staggered chains are interpreted by means of numerical simulations of the electric energy of the system. The assembly of Janus metallodielectric particles may find applications in liquid-borne microcircuits and materials with directional electric and heat transfer.  相似文献

Electro-hydrodynamic micro-fluidic mixer   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fluid mixing in microchannels is needed for many applications ranging from bio-arrays to micro-reactors, but is typically difficult to achieve. A simple geometry micro-mixer is proposed based on the electro-hydrodynamic (EHD) force present when the fluids to be mixed have different electrical properties and are subjected to an electric field. The electrodes are arranged so that the electric field is perpendicular to the interface between the two fluids, creating a transversal secondary flow. The technique is demonstrated experimentally using the flow of two liquids with identical viscosity and density, but different electrical properties. The volume flow rate and average velocity are 0.26 microl s(-1) and 4.2 mm s(-1), respectively, corresponding to a Reynolds number Re= 0.0174. The effect of a continuous (DC) electric field and two alternating (AC)- sinusoidal and square - electric fields is explored. At the appropriate parameter values, very good mixing takes place in less than 0.1 s, over a very short distance (within a fraction of the width 250 microm of the electrodes).  相似文献

A concept where an alternating electric field (dielectrophoresis) is used to assemble and align carbon nanocone particles (CNCs) into microscopic wires in self‐supporting polymer films is demonstrated. The particle fraction is kept low (one‐tenth of the percolation threshold of isotropic mixture), which allows uniform dispersion and efficient UV curing. The alignment leads to the conductivity enhancement of three to four orders of magnitude (from ~10?7 to ~10?3 S/m) in the alignment direction. It does not require passing current so the material can be isolated from the alignment electrodes. This prevents electrodes attaching to the film, if the film is adhesive in nature. The alignment can be done using either in‐plane or out‐of‐plane geometries. It is proposed that this concept could be applied in areas such as electrostatic discharge applications where inexpensive conductive or dissipative materials and macroscopic uniformity are prerequisites. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The influence of the effects associated with the inertia of particles and the surrounding fluid on the electrophoresis in an alternating electric field has been theoretically investigated. From solving the hydrodynamic equations the electrophoretic velocity of a spherical particle was found to depend on the frequency of the external electric field and on the particle-to-fluid-density ratio. It is shown that, due to inertial effects, the liquid flow around particles with a thin electrical double layer (EDL) is no longer potential. A mechanism of the formation of steady-state flow in the vicinity of oscillating particles with a thin EDL is proposed. Using numerical methods, a picture of the fluid streamlines in such a flow is obtained. The spatial distribution of the fluid velocity in the vicinity of a particle is also found. It was established that with an increasing frequency of the electric field the steady-state flow velocity passes through a maximum. The flow direction depends on the ratio between the densities of a particle and the surrounding fluid. The reversal of direction takes place when this ratio is about 0.7. The case of a thick EDL has also been considered, and a comparative analysis of the flow distributions around the particles with a thin and those with a thick EDL has been carried out.  相似文献

The inertial forces acting on two cylinders and two spheres have been calculated. The cylinders or spheres are of the same radius and zeta potential, and arbitrarily oriented in an electric field. It is found that when two particles are aligned perpendicular to the direction of the electric field, the force between them along the line of the centers is attractive. When they are along the direction of the electric field, the force between them along the line of the centers is repulsive. On a pair of arbitrarily oriented particles, the force perpendicular to the line of the centers tends to rotate the particles around the midpoint between the particle centers such that the pair is aligned normal to the applied electric field. The stable equilibrium orientation of a pair of particles and the attractive interaction forces between the particles when they are stably orientated may give rise to aggregation of particles during electrophoretic motion of a suspension.  相似文献

An attempt was made to arrange polystyrene latex particles (2, 5, and 10 microm in diameter) dispersed in aqueous media making use of their dielectrophoresis and electrophoresis with a hyperbolic quadruple electrode system. Application of a high-frequency ac field enabled the particles to arrange themselves between the electrodes forming a particle monolayer due to the negative dielectrophoretic force. Simultaneous application of high-frequency ac and dc fields caused the particles to gather in the region surrounded by the electrodes to form particle multilayers. Appropriate choice of the way of applying an electric field thus allowed the reversible control of particle arrangements (monolayer, multilayer, dispersion). Reapplication of an ac field to the particle layers produced highly dense particle multilayers.  相似文献

We characterize the movement of carbon black particles in inhomogeneous, two-dimensional dc electric fields. Motivated by display applications, the particles are suspended in a nonpolar solvent doped with a charge control agent. The two-dimensional fields are generated between strip electrodes on a glass slide spaced 120 microm apart with field strengths up to 10(4) V/m. Such fields are insufficient to drive either electrohydrodynamic instabilities or natural convection due to ohmic heating, but they move the particles between the electrodes in about 30 s. In the center region between the strip electrodes, the particles move by electrophoresis; that is, the particle velocity is proportional to the electric field. However, when imposing a constant-potential or constant-current boundary condition at the electrodes to derive the electrical field, the electrophoretic mobility calculated from the measured particle velocities is outside the range of mobilities predicted from the theory of O'Brien and White. Near the electrodes the particles either speed up or slow down, depending on the polarity of the electrode, and these changes in velocity cannot be explained simply by electrophoresis in a spatially varying electric field. We suggest that this anomalous motion arises from electrohydrodynamic flows originating from the interaction between the space charge of the polarized layers above the electrodes and the electric field. Approximate calculations indicate such flows could be sufficiently strong to explain the anomalous trajectories near the edges of the electrodes.  相似文献

The particle-field and particle-particle interactions induced by alternating electric fields can be conveniently used for on-chip assembly of colloidal crystals. Two coplanar electrodes with a millimeter-sized gap between them are used here to assemble two-dimensional crystals from suspensions of either latex or silica microspheres. When an AC voltage is applied, the particles accumulate and crystallize on the surface between the electrodes. Light diffraction and microscopic observations demonstrate that the hexagonal crystal is always oriented with one axis along the direction of the field. The particles disassemble when the field is turned off, and the process can be repeated many times. The diffraction patterns from all consecutively formed crystals are identical. This assembly is driven by forces that depend on the electric field gradient, and a model is proposed involving a combination of dielectrophoresis and induced dipole chaining. The organization of large two-dimensional crystals allows characterization of the electrostatic interactions in the particle ensembles. The process can be controlled via the field strength, the frequency, and the viscosity of the liquid media. It could be used to make rudimentary optical switches or to separate mixtures of particles of different sizes.  相似文献

When the dielectrophoresis technology is used to manipulate micron-sized particles, the interaction between particles should not be ignored because of the particle-particle interaction. Especially, when multiple particles (number of particles is above 2) are simultaneously manipulated, the interaction between neighboring particles will affect the results of the manipulation. This research investigates the interaction of particles caused dielectrophoresis effect by the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method based on the hypothesis of the thin layer of the electric double layer at the microscale. The mathematics model can be solved simultaneously by the finite element method for the AC electric field, the flow field around the suspended particles and the particle mechanics at the micrometer scale. In this study, the particle conductivity and the direction of the electric field are investigated, we find that particle conductivity and electric field direction pose an impact on particle movement, and the research reveal the law of microparticle dielectrophoresis movement, which could offer theoretical and technology support to profoundly understand the precise manipulation of particles in microfluidic chips by the dielectrophoresis effect.  相似文献

Structures with a periodic in-plane liquid crystal director field modulation induced by an electric field are studied in cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs). A phenomenon of the electric-field-induced instability in a planarly aligned cholesteric cell is used to create these undulated structures. The initial field-off state is planarly aligned with the cholesteric helix axis oriented perpendicular to the cell substrates. The interaction of the CLC with an electric field results in modulation of the refractive index, which is visualised as stripe domains oriented either along or perpendicular to the rubbing direction at cell alignment surfaces. The threshold electric field for the undulation appearance and a period of stripes are measured experimentally for three Grandjean zones (ratio d/p ~ 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5, where d is a cell thickness and p is the natural cholesteric pitch). For the zone with d/p ~ 1.0 using numerical simulations, we describe in detail the director distribution at an applied electric field. It is found that the in-plane undulated structure is characterised by a conical director rotation on moving along the alignment direction. The conical axis is tilted with respect to the alignment axis. The sign of the tilt angle depends on the handedness of CLC.  相似文献

Abstract— The mechanisms of orientation in pulsed and alternating electric fields of thylakoids (derived from the sonication of spinach chloroplasts) and of light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b-protein complexes (CPII) were investigated by utilizing linear dichroism techniques. Comparisons of the linear dichroism spectra of thylakoids and CPII particles suggest that the latter are oriented with their directions of largest electronic polarizabilities (and thus probably their largest dimensions) within the thylakoid membrane planes. At low electric field strengths (< 12 V cm?1), and at low frequencies of alternating electric fields (< 0.25 Hz), thylakoid membranes tend to align with their normals parallel to the direction of the applied electric field; the mechanism of orientation involves a permanent dipole moment of the thylakoids which is oriented perpendicular to the planes of the membranes. However, at high field strengths and high frequencies of the applied alternating electric fields, the thylakoids tend to orient with their planes parallel to the applied field, thus exhibiting an inversion of the sign of the linear dichroism as the electric field strength is increased. At the higher frequencies and at higher field strengths, the orientation mechanisms of the thylakoids involve induced dipole moments related to anisotropies in the electronic polarizabilities. The polarizability is higher within the plane than along a normal to the plane, thus accounting for the inversion of the dichroism as the electric field strength is increased. The CPII particles align with their largest dimension parallel to the applied field at all field strength, indicating that the induced dipole moment dominates the orientation mechanisms in pulsed electric fields. The magnitude of the absolute linear dichroism of CPII suspensions increases with increasing dilution, indicating that aggregates of lower symmetry are formed at higher concentrations of the CPII complexes.  相似文献

A new dielectrophoretic particle separation method is demonstrated and examined in the following experimental study. Current electrodeless dielectrophoretic (DEP) separation techniques utilize insulating solid obstacles in a DC or low-frequency AC field, while this novel method employs an oil droplet acting as an insulating hurdle between two electrodes. When particles move in a non-uniform DC field locally formed by the droplet, they are exposed to a negative DEP force linearly dependent on their volume, which allows the particle separation by size. Since the size of the droplet can be dynamically changed, the electric field gradient, and hence DEP force, becomes easily controllable and adjustable to various separation parameters. By adjusting the droplet size, particles of three different diameter sizes, 1 microm, 5.7 microm and 15.7 microm, were successfully separated in a PDMS microfluidic chip, under applied field strength in the range from 80 V cm-1 to 240 V cm-1. A very effective separation was realized at the low field strength, since the electric field gradient was proved to be a more significant parameter for particle discrimination than the applied voltage. By utilizing low strength fields and adaptable field gradient, this method can also be applied to the separation of biological samples that are generally very sensitive to high electric potential.  相似文献

Orientational alignment in a dilute dispersion of kaolinite particles has been investigated in a flow pattern that combines both shear and elongational stress, namely flow at a jet created by a 2 mm diameter nozzle inserted in a 6 mm diameter pipe. Spatially-resolved X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation permits detailed maps of the alignment to be deduced and compared with fluid mechanics calculations of the flow. The angular distribution of diffracted intensity from a given position in the pipe provides information about the orientation distribution of the particles. This is quantified and presented in terms of order parameters. The cone-shaped nozzle provides a jet of liquid giving a high degree of alignment of the particles that is uniform along lines across the conical section and constant in the small straight-sided region at the exit of the nozzle. The vortex motion that arises from the flow with a modest Reynolds number could be determined as well as the tendency for some particles to align with their large faces perpendicular to the overall flow direction at the flat surface of the nozzle outlet.  相似文献

The alignments of silica particles formed in sinusoidal electrical fields of 1 kHz were assessed using an optical microscope with measuring the electric conductance of a silica dispersion between two Pt electrodes in a vitreous silica glass cell. We confirmed that the electric conductance of the silica dispersion between the two electrodes in the cell reflected the surface conductance of the silica particles settling at the bottom of the cell. More interestingly, we observed that the electric conductance of the silica dispersion in the cell increased when pearl chains of the silica particle were formed along the direction of the electric field. However, no clear change in the electric conductance of the dispersion was observed at higher electric field strengths where a transition from pearl chains to zigzag band patterns and circulating movements of the silica particles in the zigzag bands formed.  相似文献

Microfluidic devices with three-dimensional (3-D) arrays of microelectrodes embedded in microchannels have been developed to study dielectrophoretic forces acting on synthetic micro- and nanoparticles. In particular, so-called deflector structures were used to separate particles according to their size and to enable accumulation of a fraction of interest into a small sample volume for further analysis. Particle velocity within the microchannels was measured by video microscopy and the hydrodynamic friction forces exerted on deflected particles were determined according to Stokes law. These results lead to an absolute measure of the dielectrophoretic forces and allowed for a quantitative test of the underlying theory. In summary, the influence of channel height, particle size, buffer composition, electric field, strength and frequency on the dielectrophoretic force and the effectiveness of dielectrophoretic deflection structures were determined. For this purpose, microfluidic devices have been developed comprising pairs of electrodes extending into fluid channels on both top and bottom side of the microfluidic channels. Electrodes were aligned under angles varying from 0 to 75 degrees with respect to the direction of flow. Devices with channel height varying between 5 and 50 microm were manufactured. Fabrication involved a dedicated bonding technology using a mask aligner and UV-curing adhesive. Particles with radius ranging from 250 nm to 12 microm were injected into the channels using aqueous buffer solutions.  相似文献

This paper presents a method for positioning and aligning self-assembled tubules of 1,2-bis(tricosa-10,12-diynoyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphochloline (DC(8,9)PC) by withdrawing a patterned Au substrate from tubule solution. The patterned Au substrates with alternating bare Au stripes and thiol monolayer stripes are formed by microcontact printing. We find that the lipid tubules selectively adsorb on the bare Au stripes but show no orientation order. By withdrawing the patterned Au substrates at the direction along the stripes from tubule solution, the lipid tubules are found to be aligned along the direction of the Au stripes. The angular distribution and the density of the aligned lipid tubules depend on the withdrawal rates and the adsorption time, respectively. We conclude that forces causing tubule alignment that originate in the surface tension associated with the moving meniscus dominate alignment forces exerted by the patterned Au substrates.  相似文献

The selectivity and range of energies offered by specific biological interactions serve as valuable tools for engineering the assembly of colloidal particles into novel materials. In this investigation, high affinity biological interactions between biotin-coated "A" particles (RA = 0.475 microm) and streptavidin-coated "B" particles (RB = 2.75 microm) drive the self-assembly of a series of binary colloidal structures, from colloidal micelles (a large B particle coated by smaller A particles) to elongated chain microstructures (alternating A and B particles), as the relative number of small (A) to large (B) particles (2 < or = NA/NB < or = 200) is decreased at a low total volume fraction (10(-4) < or = phiT < or = 10(-3)). At a significantly higher total volume fraction (phiT > or = 10(-1)) and a low number ratio (NA/NB = 2), the rheological behavior of volume-filling particle networks connected by streptavidin-biotin bonds is characterized. The apparent viscosity (eta) as a function of the shear rate gamma, measured for networks at phiT = 0.1 and 0.2, exhibits shear-rate-dependent flow behavior, and both the apparent viscosity and the extent of shear thinning increase upon an increase of a factor of 2 in the total volume fraction. Micrographs taken before and after shearing show a structural breakdown of the flocculated binary particle network into smaller flocs, and ultimately a fluidlike suspension, with increasing shear rate. Rheological measurements provide further proof that suspension microstructure is governed by specific biomolecular interactions, as control experiments in which the streptavidin molecules on particles were blocked displayed Newtonian flow behavior. This investigation represents the first attempt at measuring the rheology of colloidal suspensions where assembly is driven by biomolecular cross-linking.  相似文献

Various particle manipulations including enrichment, movement, trapping, separation, and focusing by floating electrodes attached to the bottom wall of a straight microchannel under an imposed DC electric field have been experimentally demonstrated. In contrast to a dielectric microchannel possessing a nearly uniform surface charge (or ζ potential), the metal strip (floating electrode) is polarized under the imposed electric field, resulting in a nonuniform distribution of the induced surface charge with a zero net surface charge along the floating electrode's surface, and accordingly induced-charge electroosmotic flow near the metal strip. The induced induced-charge electroosmotic flow can be regulated by controlling the strength of the imposed electric field and affects both the hydrodynamic field and the particle's motion. By using a single floating electrode, charged particles could be locally concentrated in a section of the channel or in an end-reservoir and move toward either the anode or the cathode by controlling the strength of the imposed electric field. By using double floating electrodes, negatively charged particles could be concentrated between the floating electrodes, subsequently squeezed to a stream flowing in the center region of the microchannel toward the cathodic reservoir, which can be used to focus particles.  相似文献

A substantial approach to one‐dimensional (1D) electrically conductive composites was proposed which was based on the thermodynamic analysis of electric‐field‐induced particle alignment in a nonpolar thermoplastic polymer matrix. The process condition window was based on the real‐time exploration of dynamic percolation under different electric fields with carbon black (CB)‐filled polyethylene as a model. The CB content was the main factor of the process condition. Its upper limit was set as the critical percolation concentration at the thermodynamic equilibrium state without an electric field to eliminate the possibility of conductive network formation perpendicular to the electric‐field direction, whereas its lower limit the critical percolation concentration at the thermodynamic equilibrium state under a critical electric field (E*). A composite with CB content in this window, isothermally treated in an electric field not less than E*, showed conductivity in the electric‐field direction about 105 times larger than that in the perpendicular direction. A 1D cluster structure in the direction of the electric filed was confirmed with scanning electron microscopy morphology observations. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For electrorheological (ER) suspensions, the aggregate structures of particles were observed in electric fields by the use of transparent cells with different electrode patterns. Although the suspension is dispersed to noninteracting particles without electric fields, many aggregates are formed on the electrode surface in electric fields. Since the dipole–dipole interactions cause chain structures of particles and equilibrium conformations of chains are always aligned with electric field, the aggregates indicate the presence of columns spanning the electrode gap. The particle concentration in columns which are developed between parallel-plate electrodes is about 22 vol %. In striped electrodes, the particles construct striped aggregates along the electrodes and no particles remain in the insulating region. The particle concentration in striped aggregates is about 35 vol %. The nonuniformity of electric field is responsible for the high particle concentration. The increase in particle concentration of column lead to the high yield stress of electrified suspension. Therefore, the ER performance of suspension as an overall response can be improved by the electrode design.  相似文献
