This article presents a spectrum result on minimal blocking sets with respect to the planes of PG(3, q), q odd. We prove that for every integer k in an interval of, roughly, size [q 2/4, 3q 2/4], there exists such a minimal blocking set of size k in PG(3, q), q odd. A similar result on the spectrum of minimal blocking sets with respect to the planes of PG(3, q), q even, was presented in Rößing and Storme (Eur J Combin 31:349–361, 2010). Since minimal blocking sets with respect to the planes in PG(3, q) are tangency sets, they define maximal partial 1-systems on the Klein quadric Q +(5, q), so we get the same spectrum result for maximal partial 1-systems of lines on the Klein quadric Q +(5, q), q odd.  相似文献

In the symplectic polar space W 5(q) every 1-system which satisfies the BLT-property (and then q is odd) defines a generalized quadrangle (GQ) of order (q 2,q 3). In this paper, we show that this 1-system is unique, so that the only GQ arising in this way is isomorphic to the classical GQ H(4,q 2), q odd.  相似文献

This paper is a survey on the existence and non-existence of ovoids and spreads in the known finite generalized quadrangles. It also contains the following new results. We prove that translation generalized quadrangles of order (s,s 2), satisfying certain properties, have a spread. This applies to three known infinite classes of translation generalized quadrangles. Further a new class of ovoids in the classical generalized quadranglesQ(4, 3 e ),e3, is constructed. Then, by the duality betweenQ(4, 3 e ) and the classical generalized quadrangleW (3 e ), we get line spreads of PG(3, 3 e ) and hence translation planes of order 32e . These planes appear to be new. Note also that only a few classes of ovoids ofQ(4,q) are known. Next we prove that each generalized quadrangle of order (q 2,q) arising from a flock of a quadratic cone has an ovoid. Finally, we give the following characterization of the classical generalized quadranglesQ(5,q): IfS is a generalized quadrangle of order (q,q 2),q even, having a subquadrangleS isomorphic toQ(4,q) and if inS each ovoid consisting of all points collinear with a given pointx ofS\S is an elliptic quadric, thenS is isomorphic toQ(5,q).  相似文献

This article presents a spectrum result on maximal partial ovoids of the generalized quadrangle Q(4,q), q even. We prove that for every integer k in an interval of, roughly, size [q2/10,9q2/10], there exists a maximal partial ovoid of size k on Q(4,q), q even. Since the generalized quadrangle W(q), q even, defined by a symplectic polarity of PG(3,q) is isomorphic to the generalized quadrangle Q(4,q), q even, the same result is obtained for maximal partial ovoids of W(q), q even. As equivalent results, the same spectrum result is obtained for minimal blocking sets with respect to planes of PG(3,q), q even, and for maximal partial 1-systems of lines on the Klein quadric Q+(5,q), q even.  相似文献

The image of a 1-system of Q7q under a triality of the D4-geometry, attached to Q7q, will be investigated. Attention will mainly be paid to the case of a locally hermitian, semiclassical 1-system of a Q6 q, embedded in Q7q. It is found that its image under a triality is always locally hermitian and semiclassical as well. Moreover, it is a proper 1-system of Q7q whenever the original 1-system of Q6q is not a spread of some generalized hexagon Hq on Q6,q. Finally, some results concerning isomorphisms will be obtained.AMS classification : 51A50, 51E12, 51E30communicated by: S. Ball  相似文献

We prove that slices of the unitary spread of Q+(7,q)\mathcal{Q}^{+}(7,q), q≡2 (mod 3), can be partitioned into five disjoint classes. Slices belonging to different classes are non-equivalent under the action of the subgroup of PΓO +(8,q) fixing the unitary spread. When q is even, there is a connection between spreads of Q+(7,q)\mathcal{Q}^{+}(7,q) and symplectic 2-spreads of PG(5,q) (see Dillon, Ph.D. thesis, 1974 and Dye, Ann. Mat. Pura Appl. (4) 114, 173–194, 1977). As a consequence of the above result we determine all the possible non-equivalent symplectic 2-spreads arising from the unitary spread of Q+(7,q)\mathcal{Q}^{+}(7,q), q=22h+1. Some of these already appeared in Kantor, SIAM J. Algebr. Discrete Methods 3(2), 151–165, 1982. When q=3 h , we classify, up to the action of the stabilizer in PΓO(7,q) of the unitary spread of Q(6,q), those among its slices producing spreads of the elliptic quadric Q-(5,q)\mathcal{Q}^{-}(5,q).  相似文献

Summary In this paper, for q even, we construct an ovoid O 3 and a spread S of the finite classical polar space Q+(7, q) determinated by a hyperbolic quadric Q+ of PG(7, q) such that there is a subgroup of PGO + 8 (q) isomorphic to PGL2(q 3), which maps O 3 in itself and S in S and is 3-transitive on O 3 and on S; for q>2, S is not a Desarguesian spread of Q+(7, q) and O 3 is a Desarguesian ovoid.

In [J.L. Kim, K. Mellinger, L. Storme, Small weight codewords in LDPC codes defined by (dual) classical generalised quadrangles, Des. Codes Cryptogr. 42 (1) (2007) 73-92], the codewords of small weight in the dual code of the code of points and lines of Q(4,q) are characterised. Inspired by this result, using geometrical arguments, we characterise the codewords of small weight in the dual code of the code of points and generators of Q+(5,q) and H(5,q2), and we present lower bounds on the weight of the codewords in the dual of the code of points and k-spaces of the classical polar spaces. Furthermore, we investigate the codewords with the largest weights in these codes, where for q even and k sufficiently small, we determine the maximum weight and characterise the codewords of maximum weight. Moreover, we show that there exists an interval such that for every even number w in this interval, there is a codeword in the dual code of Q+(5,q), q even, with weight w and we show that there is an empty interval in the weight distribution of the dual of the code of Q(4,q), q even. To prove this, we show that a blocking set of Q(4,q), q even, of size q2+1+r, where 0<r<(q+4)/6, contains an ovoid of Q(4,q), improving on [J. Eisfeld, L. Storme, T. Sz?nyi, P. Sziklai, Covers and blocking sets of classical generalised quadrangles, Discrete Math. 238 (2001) 35-51, Theorem 9].  相似文献

Letm2(3,q) be the largest value ofk(k<q 2+1) for which there exists a completek-cap in PG(3,q),q even. In this paper, the known upper bound onm2(3,q) is improved. We also describe a number of intervals, fork, for which there does not exist a completek-cap in PG(3,q),q even. These results are then used to improve the known upper bounds on the number of points of a cap in PG(n, q),q even,n?4.  相似文献

Let $\mathcal S$ be a Desarguesian (n – 1)-spread of a hyperplane Σ of PG(rn, q). Let Ω and ${\bar B}$ be, respectively, an (n – 2)-dimensional subspace of an element of $\mathcal S $ and a minimal blocking set of an ((r – 1)n + 1)-dimensional subspace of PG(rn, q) skew to Ω. Denote by K the cone with vertex Ω and base ${\bar B}$ , and consider the point set B defined by $$B=\left(K\setminus\Sigma\right)\cup \{X\in \mathcal S\, : \, X\cap K\neq \emptyset\}$$ in the Barlotti–Cofman representation of PG(r, q n ) in PG(rn, q) associated to the (n – 1)-spread $\mathcal S$ . Generalizing the constructions of Mazzocca and Polverino (J Algebraic Combin, 24(1):61–81, 2006), under suitable assumptions on ${\bar B}$ , we prove that B is a minimal blocking set in PG(r, q n ). In this way, we achieve new classes of minimal blocking sets and we find new sizes of minimal blocking sets in finite projective spaces of non-prime order. In particular, for q a power of 3, we exhibit examples of r-dimensional minimal blocking sets of size q n+2 + 1 in PG(r, q n ), 3 ≤ r ≤ 6 and n ≥ 3, and of size q 4 + 1 in PG(r, q 2), 4 ≤ r ≤ 6; actually, in the second case, these blocking sets turn out to be the union of q 3 Baer sublines through a point. Moreover, for q an even power of 3, we construct examples of minimal blocking sets of PG(4, q) of size at least q 2 + 2. From these constructions, we also get maximal partial ovoids of the hermitian variety H(4, q 2) of size q 4 + 1, for any q a power of 3.  相似文献

An intriguing set of points of a generalised quadrangle was introduced in [J. Bamberg, M. Law, T. Penttila, Tight sets and m-ovoids of generalised quadrangles, Combinatorica, in press] as a unification of the pre-existing notions of tight set and m-ovoid. It was shown in [J. Bamberg, M. Law, T. Penttila, Tight sets and m-ovoids of generalised quadrangles, Combinatorica, in press] that every intriguing set of points in a finite generalised quadrangle is a tight set or an m-ovoid (for some m). Moreover, it was shown that an m-ovoid and an i-tight set of a common generalised quadrangle intersect in mi points. These results yielded new proofs of old results, and in this paper, we study the natural analogue of intriguing sets in finite polar spaces of higher rank. In particular, we use the techniques developed in this paper to give an alternative proof of a result of Thas [J.A. Thas, Ovoids and spreads of finite classical polar spaces, Geom. Dedicata 10 (1-4) (1981) 135-143] that there are no ovoids of H(2r,q2), Q(2r+1,q), and W(2r−1,q) for r>2. We also strengthen a result of Drudge on the non-existence of tight sets in W(2r−1,q), H(2r+1,q2), and Q+(2r+1,q), and we give a new proof of a result of De Winter, Luyckx, and Thas [S. De Winter, J.A. Thas, SPG-reguli satisfying the polar property and a new semipartial geometry, Des. Codes Cryptogr. 32 (1-3) (2004) 153-166; D. Luyckx, m-Systems of finite classical polar spaces, PhD thesis, The University of Ghent, 2002] that an m-system of W(4m+3,q) or Q(4m+3,q) is a pseudo-ovoid of the ambient projective space.  相似文献

It is shown that if a spread of a finite split Cayley hexagon is translation with respect to two disjoint flags then it is either a hermitian spread or a Ree–Tits spread. Analogously, if an ovoid of a classical generalized quadrangle Q(4, q) is translation with respect to two disjoint flags then it is either an elliptic quadric or a Suzuki–Tits ovoid. In the course of obtaining these results, we introduce the notion of local polarity for ovoid-spread pairings and show that if an ovoid-spread pairing is locally polar at each of its elements then it arises from a polarity.  相似文献

We find a relationship between semifield spreads of PG(3,q), small Rédei minimal blocking sets of PG(2,q2), disjoint from a Baer subline of a Rédei line, and translation ovoids of the hermitian surface H(3,q2).  相似文献

Let P,Q, and R denote the Ramanujan Eisenstein series. We compute algebraic relations in terms of P(q i ) (i=1,2,3,4), Q(q i ) (i=1,2,3), and R(q i ) (i=1,2,3). For complex algebraic numbers q with 0<|q|<1 we prove the algebraic independence over ? of any three-element subset of {P(q),P(q 2),P(q 3),P(q 4)} and of any two-element subset of {Q(q),Q(q 2),Q(q 3)} and {R(q),R(q 2),R(q 3)}, respectively. For all the results we use some expressions of $P(q^{i_{1}}), Q(q^{i_{2}}) $ , and $R(q^{i_{3}}) $ in terms of theta constants. Computer-assisted computations of functional determinants and resultants are essential parts of our proofs.  相似文献

The incidence structure NQ+(3, q) has points the points not on a non-degenerate hyperbolic quadric Q+(3, q) in PG(3, q), and its lines are the lines of PG(3, q) not containing a point of Q+(3, q). It is easy to show that NQ+(3, q) is a partial linear space of order (q, q(q−1)/2). If q is odd, then moreover NQ+(3, q) satisfies the property that for each non-incident point line pair (x,L), there are either (q−1)/2 or (q+1)/2 points incident with L that are collinear with x. A partial linear space of order (s, t) satisfying this property is called a ((q−1)/2,(q+1)/2)-geometry. In this paper, we will prove the following characterization of NQ+(3,q). Let S be a ((q−1)/2,(q+1)/2)-geometry fully embedded in PG(n, q), for q odd and q>3. Then S = NQ+(3, q).  相似文献

The spectrum of a finite group is the set of its element orders. Two groups are isospectral whenever they have the same spectra. We consider the classes of finite groups isospectral to the simple symplectic and orthogonal groups B 3(q), C 3(q), and D 4(q). We prove that in the case of even characteristic and q > 2 these groups can be reconstructed from their spectra up to isomorphisms. In the case of odd characteristic we obtain a restriction on the composition structure of groups of this class.  相似文献

A quaternionic field over the rationals contains three quadratic subfields with a compositum genus relation of the type described in the author's paper in Volume 9 of this journal, involving the representation of a prime as norm in these subfields. These representations had previously been only partially exlored by the transfer of class structure from the rational to the quadratic fields. Here a full exposition is given by constructing the Artin characters when the subfields are Q(21/2), Q(q1/2), and Q(2q)1/2 (q prime). A special role belongs to q = A2 + 32b2.  相似文献

In Mazzocca et al. (Des. Codes Cryptogr. 44:97–113, 2007), large minimal blocking sets in PG(3, q 2) and PG(4, q 2) have been constructed starting from ovoids of PG(3, q), Q(4, q) and Q(6, q). Some of these can be embedded in a Hermitian variety as maximal partial ovoids. In this paper, the geometric conditions assuring these embeddings are established.  相似文献
