The problem of peristaltic transport of a non-Newtonian (power-law) fluid in uniform and non-uniform two-dimensional channels has been investigated under zero Reynolds number with long wavelength approximation. A comparison of the results with those for a Newtonian fluid model shows that the magnitude of pressure rise, under a given set of conditions, is smaller in the case of the non-Newtonian fluid (power-law indexn < 1) at zero flow rate. Further, the pressure rise is smaller asn decreases from 1 at zero flow rate, is independent ofn at a certain value of flow rate and becomes greater if flow rate increases further. Also, at a given flow rate, an increase in wavelength leads to a decrease in pressure rise and increase in the influence of non-Newtonian behaviour. Pressure rise in the case of non-uniform geometry, is found to be much smaller than the corresponding value in the case of uniform geometry. Finally, the analysis is applied and compared with observed flow rates in the ductus efferentes of the male reproductive tract.  相似文献

A boundary element method is used to simulate the unsteady motion of a sphere falling under gravity along the centreline of a cylindrical tube containing a viscoelastic fluid. The fluid is modelled by the upper-convected Maxwell constitutive equation. Results show that the viscoelasticity of the liquid leads to a damped oscillation in sphere velocity about its terminal value. The maximum sphere velocity, which occurs in the first overshoot, is approximately proportional to the square root of the Weissenberg number when the ratio of the sphere radius to the tube radius is sufficiently small. Particular attention is also paid to the wall effects. It is shown that a closer wall reduces the oscillatory amplitude of the sphere velocity but increases its frequency. The results suggest that the falling-ball technique, which is now widely used for viscosity measurement, might also be used for the determination of a relaxation time for a viscoelastic fluid.  相似文献

Numerical solutions are presented for the flow past a sphere placed at the centreline of a cylindrical tube for Reynolds numbers ranging from 0 to 150, using a boundary element method. Fluids are modelled by a variety of constitutive equations including the Newtonian, the Carreau and the Phan-Thien-Tanner models. The influence of inertia, shear-thinning and fluid elasticity on the flow field, drag and the pressure drop force-drag ratio is examined. Some results are compared with available experimental data.  相似文献

The stability of a viscoelastic fluid in a densely packed horizontal porous layer heated from below is considered using an Oldroyd model. Critical Rayleigh number, wave number, and frequency for overstability are determined by applying the linear stability theory. It is shown that the critical Rayleigh number is invariant under all relevant boundary combinations. Also, it is found that the effect of elasticity of the fluid is to destabilize the system and that of porosity is to stabilize the same. The limiting case of very high Prandtl number and the degenerate case corresponding to the Maxwell model are analyzed in some detail.  相似文献

The paper is concerned with the development of an on-line rheometer for suspensions with settling particles. A new concept of a rotational rheometer with helical screw impeller is discussed. On the basis of model considerations a procedure for the flow curve determination of the investigated fluid has been proposed. Contrary to previous attempts, in the developed procedure no calibration of the instrument is necessary. The preliminary experimental verification of the developed approach proved its applicability.  相似文献

The motion of freely suspended rodlike particles has been observed in the pressure-driven flow between the two flat plates of a Hele Shaw flow cell at low Reynolds numbers. Data are reported for rodlike particles with aspect ratios of 12.0 suspended in a Newtonian fluid for gap thickness to particle length ratios of 3, 6, and 20; and for rodlike particles with aspect ratios between 5 and 8 in a non-Newtonian fluid (79.25 wt.% water, 20.2 wt.% glycerine, and 0.55 wt.% polyacrylamide). For the Newtonian fluid, the time-dependent orientation of the particles near and far from walls was shown to be in quantitative agreement with Jeffery's theory for ellipsoids suspended in a simple shear flow if an effective aspect ratio is calculated from the experimental period of rotation. Particles aligned with the flow direction and less than a particle half-length from a wall interacted irreversibly with the wall. For the non-Newtonian fluid, the timedependent orientation far from a wall was shown to be in qualitative agreement with Leal's theory for a second-order fluid; however, particles that were aligned with the flow direction and were near walls did not rotate.  相似文献

The solutions of the continuity equation and the equations of motion of the flow in the vicinity of a rotating disk have been established for an Ostwald fluid under steady-state conditions and in modulated flow around a mean value. Under steady-state conditions, the kinematics of the flow is scarcely dependent on the rheological parameters close to the disk, however, for n < 1 long-range effects have been put forward. For modulated flow, in the high-frequency range, a behaviour very different from that observed for a Newtonian fluid was found. In the low-frequency range an asymptotic solution has been proposed which is of special interest in mass transfer problems.Presented at the Second Conference of European Rheologists, Prague, June 17–20, 1986  相似文献

Streaming of a non-Newtonian fluid around a sphere is of special importance not only for measuring viscosities with falling spheres, but also for many problems connected with polymer processing. Using the mentioned measuring principle, attention has to be paid to the following points: The sphere is moving in a fluid (melt) of finite extension which requires the application of wall and perhaps end corrections. These are possibly not the same for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. To calculate the viscosity with the help of Stokes law the steady-state velocity is necessary, and it is essential, how long it takes the sphere to reach it. To compare our results with other data, an average shear rate has to be calculated, since there is no uniform shear rate around the sphere. Velocities being very low in our experiments result in very small Reynolds numbers (Re < 10–3), which allows the application of Stokes law practically without corrections. The experiments were performed at zero shear and in the transition region above. It turned out, that it is usually not possible to extrapolate from shear-dependent viscosity data to zero-shear viscosity.Dedicated to Prof. A. Neckel on the occasion of his 60th birthday  相似文献

To demonstrate the influence of molecular orientation on the heat conduction in a flowing polymeric liquid, we consider a variant of the Graetz-Nusselt problem. A polymeric liquid is flowing between two flat, parallel plates with a sudden change in the wall temperature. The temperature distribution in the entrance region is calculated numerically taking viscous dissipation into account. It is assumed that the material properties are independent of the temperature. It is shown that the change in the temperature distribution in the fluid caused by molecular orientation is large enough to affect polymer processing significantly.  相似文献

It is shown, by the use of the symmetry group of a fluid, that the stress in an elastic fluid depends on the current value of the deformation gradient through the absolute value of the determinant of the deformation gradient, whereas in a simple fluid it depends on this value of the determinant and the history of the relative deformation gradient and nothing else. This derivation is then used to show some of the errors in the criticisms made about the work of Noll. Additionally, a lacuna in Noll's derivation is removed to overcome the only valid criticism made about this theory of simple fluids.  相似文献

Applying Green's continuum theory of a slender body, the process of liquid jet break-up is analysed for a viscoelastic upper-convected Jeffreys fluid. In contrast to a Newtonian liquid an enforced growth of the perturbation is received from a linear analysis. A non-linear numerical analysis shows the viscosity-dependent filament formation between growing droplets of the viscoelastic liquid. The radius of these filaments decreases in an uniaxial extensional flow.  相似文献

Theoretical force-time relationships were derived for squeezing flow of a Newtonian liquid between lubricated rigid and elastic plates. It is shown how the elastic number, representing the ratio between the elastic plate's rigidity and the specimen's viscosity, affects the force-time curve and under what circumstances the fluid specimen's thickness becomes a significant factor. Potential implications of the analysis in oral sensory evaluations of viscous foods are also considered.  相似文献

In a recent paper, Joseph et al. showed that, for a number of viscoelastic fluids, one can observe the phenomenon of delayed die swell beyond a critical extrusion velocity, or beyond a critical value of the viscoelastic Mach number. Giesekus had also observed that delayed die swell is a critical phenomenon. In the present paper, we find a set of material and flow parameters under which it is possible to simulate delayed die swell. For the viscoelastic flow calculation, we use the finite element algorithm with sub-elements for the stresses and streamline upwinding in the discretized constitutive equations. For the free surface, we use an implicit technique which allows us to implement Newton's method for solving the non-linear system of equations. The fluid is Oldroyd-B which, in the present problem, is a singular perturbation of the Maxwell fluid. The results show very little sensitivity to the size of the retardation time. We also show delayed die swell for a Giesekus fluid. This paper is dedicated to Professor Hanswalter Giesekus on the occasion of his retirement as Editor of Rheologica Acta.  相似文献

An analysis of particle orientation in a dilute suspension of rodlike particles in a second-order fluid was performed to examine the effects of the elasticity of the fluid and of weak Brownian diffusion of the particle on its orientation. Distributions of particle orientation under a simple shear flow with rate of shearg have been obtained as a function of a single nondimensional parameter, * =/r e 2 (D/g), which combines the effects of the particle aspect ratior e , the weak fluid elasticity, and the weak Brownian rotation diffusion coefficientD of the particle. In the limit of larger e , when the fluid elasticity is strong enough to overcome the rotational diffusion effect on the particle motion, most of the particles will orient close to the vorticity axis. A new shear-thinning mechanism of the shear viscosity of such systems is predicted by the theory.  相似文献

A purely elastic transition in Taylor-Couette flow   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Experimental evidence of a non-inertial, cellular instability in the Taylor-Couette flow of a viscoelastic fluid is presented. A linear stability analysis for an Oldroyd-B fluid, which is successful in describing many features of the experimental fluid, predicts the critical Deborah number,De c , at which the instability is observed. The dependence ofDe c on the value of the dimensionless gap between the cylinders is also determined. This paper is dedicated to Professor Hanswalter Giesekus on the occasion of his retirement as Editor of Rheologica Acta.  相似文献

The paper is concerned with the squeezing flow of a model suspension fluid. The numerical solution obtained by a time-dependent Boundary Element Method is compared to an asymptotic solution at large radius. It is found that the kinematics are Newtonian in character, and the fibres quickly align themselves radially. Consequently, the squeezing force is only weakly dependent on the initial orientations of the fibres and the device can be used for measuring the effective viscosity of the suspension. The effective viscosity found from the squeezing flow agrees surprisingly well with experimental data and numerical data derived from the falling sphere geometry at low volume fractions ( < 0.1).  相似文献

The paper is concerned with the continuous squeezing flow of Oldroyd-type fluids in a two-dimensional wedge. The flow mimics the lubrication action in a squeezing flow and is important in that there exists a similarity solution for any simple fluid. We are only concerned with Oldroyd-type fluids, however. It is shown by using a parameter continuation method that the Oldroyd-B model has a limiting Weissenberg number. The Phan Thien/Tanner model does not have this limiting Weissenberg number.

The flow of a non-Newtonian fluid driven by an axial pressure gradient through a corrugated pipe of circular cross-section is analysed theoretically and realized experimentally. Particular attention is directed toward the pressure-discharge characteristics of the pipe which change due to the corrugation. A theory is developed for the limiting case of corrugations with long wave-length, where the cross-section of the pipe varies gradually in the flow direction and the effects of inertia and elasticity of the fluid are of minor importance. Within such a long-wave approximation the flow rate, in dependence on the applied pressure drop and on the non-linear viscous properties of the fluid, is determined analytically for arbitrary wave amplitudes. The theoretical results are in agreement with experimental findings.

The peristaltic motion of a non-Newtonian fluid represented by the constitutive equation for a second-order fluid was studied for the case of a planar channel with harmonically undulating extensible walls. A perturbation series for the parameter ( half-width of channel/wave length) obtained explicit terms of 0(2), 0(2Re2) and 0(1Re2) respectively representing curvature, inertia and the non-Newtonian character of the fluid. Numerical computations were performed and compared to the perturbation analysis in order to determine the range of validity of the terms.Presented at the second conference Recent Developments in Structured Continua, May 23–25, 1990, in Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada  相似文献
