T-shaped polyphilic triblock molecules, consisting of a rodlike p-terphenyl unit, a hydrophilic and flexible laterally attached oligo(oxyethylene) chain terminated by an 1-acylamino-1-deoxy-D-sorbitol unit, and two end-attached lipophilic alkyl chains, have been synthesized by palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions as the key steps. The thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior of these compounds was investigated by polarized light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray scattering. We investigated the mode of self-organization as a function of the length and position of the lateral polar chain and the length of the terminal alkyl chains. Depending on the size of the polar and lipophilic segments, a series of unusual liquid crystalline phases was detected. In three of these phases, the space is divided into three distinct periodic subspaces. In addition to a hexagonal channeled layer phase (ChL(hex)) consisting of layers that are penetrated by polar columns, there are also two honeycomb-like network structures formed by square (Col(squ)/p4mm) or pentagonal cylinders (Col(squ)/p4gm). The cylinder walls consist of the terphenyl units fused by columns of alkyl chains, and the interior contains the polar side chains. In addition, a hexagonal columnar phase was observed in which the polar columns are organized in a continuum of terphenyls and alkyl chains with an organization of the terphenyl cores tangentially around the columns with the long axis perpendicular to the columns. For one compound, a reversal of birefringence was observed, which is explained by a reorientation of the terphenyl cores. The addition of protic solvents induces lamellar phases.  相似文献

Novel bolaamphiphilic triblockmolecules consisting of a rigid biphenyl unit, with a polar 2,3-dihydroxypropyloxy group and a phenolic OH group at opposite ends, as well as a semiperfluorinated chain in a lateral position have been synthesized via palladium catalyzed cross coupling reactions as the key steps. The thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior of these compounds was investigated by polarized light microscopy, DSC and X-ray scattering, and the influence of the length of the lateral chain on the mesomorphic properties was studied. The compound with the shortest chain as well as the long chain derivatives form lamellar mesophases composed of segregated layers of the bolaamphiphilic moieties and sublayers comprising the fluid lateral chains. The layers within the lamellar phases of the short chain compound adopt a positional correlation, leading to a 2D lattice (Col(r)/p2mm), whereas the layers of the lamellar phases of the long chain derivatives are noncorrelated (Lam). Compounds with a medium chain length organize into columnar phases, where the nonpolar lateral chains segregate into columns, which are embedded in networks of regular (Col(h)) or stretched (Col(r)/c2mm) hexagonal cylinder shells consisting of the bolaamphiphilic units. In total, an unusual phase sequence was found, where, with respect to the chain length, columnar mesophases occur between two mesophases with layer organization.  相似文献

By using aryl‐amination chemistry, a series of rodlike 1‐phenyl‐1H‐imidazole‐based liquid crystals (LCs) and related imidazolium‐based ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) has been prepared. The number and length of the C‐terminal chains (at the noncharged end of the rodlike core) and the length of the N‐terminal chain (on the imidazolium unit in the ILCs) were modified and the influence of these structural parameters on the mode of self‐assembly in LC phases was investigated by polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X‐ray diffraction. For the single‐chain imidazole derivatives nematic phases (N) and bilayer SmA2 phases were found, but upon increasing the number of alkyl chains the LC phases were lost. For the related imidazolium salts LC phases were preserved upon increasing the number and length of the C‐terminal chains and in this series it leads to the phase sequence SmA–columnar (Col)–micellar cubic (CubI/Pm3n). Elongation of the N‐terminal chain gives the reversed sequence. Short N‐terminal chains prefer an end‐to‐end packing of the mesogens in which these chains are separated from the C‐terminal chains. Elongation of the N‐terminal chain leads to a mixing of N‐ and C‐terminal chains, which is accompanied by complete intercalation of the aromatic cores. In the smectic phases this gives rise to a transition from bilayer (SmA2) to monolayer smectic (SmA) phases. For the columnar and cubic phases the segregated end‐to‐end packing leads to core–shell aggregates. In this case, elongation of the N‐terminal chains distorts core–shell formation and removes CubI and Col phases in favor of single‐layer SmA phases. Hence, by tailoring the length of the N‐terminal chain, a crossover from taper‐shaped to polycatenar LC tectons was achieved, which provides a powerful tool for control of self‐assembly in ILCs.  相似文献

Four new series of non-disklike complexes of general formula [MCl(2)(L(n))] based upon substituted 2,6-bis(3',4',5'-trialkoxyphenyliminomethyl)pyridine ligands (L(n)) and with M=Zn(II), Co(II), Mn(II), and Ni(II) have been prepared and examined for liquid crystallinity. A complete analysis of the thermal behavior by polarized-light optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and small-angle Xray scattering revealed a rich and varied mesomorphism. Moreover, the high thermal stability of the compounds leads to rather extended mesomorphic ranges. The nature and thermal stability of each mesophase depend on both the length of the six terminal alkoxy chains, n (n=8, 10, 12, 14, 16), and on the metal ions. As demonstrated by small-angle Xray diffraction experiments, the mesomorphism of these complexes is solely of the columnar type. One compound shows an oblique columnar phase, while most of them show a hexagonal columnar phase, Col(h), and several types of rectangular columnar phase, Col(r). Xray single-crystal structures obtained for three methoxy derivatives confirm the 1:1 metal-ligand stoichiometry of the complexes, in which the metal is pentacoordinate with a distorted, trigonal bipyramidal geometry. The crystalline structures also reveal the existence of some columnar organization in the solid state, the columns resulting from an alternated stacking of the complexes in one direction. By combining these results with those obtained from dilatometry experiments, a model for the molecular organization within the mesophases is proposed in which an antiparallel arrangement of the metallomesogens is retained in the mesophase.  相似文献

以聚(乙烯基对苯二甲酸二烷基酯)(PDAVT)为对象,用热分析、X射线衍射、流变及固体核磁共振等方法考察了甲壳型液晶高分子中存在的"低温无序、高温有序"的非寻常相行为.实验证明,在升温过程中,烷基基团为丁基、己基和辛基的PDAVT(P4、P6和P8)可从无定形态发育出柱状(Col)液晶相,导致在高温区体系模量升高.降温时P6和P8可完全回到无定形态,表现出典型的"各向同性相重入"行为.PDAVT液晶相畴的生长具有一维生长的特点,是成核控制的,升高温度可加快Col相的形成.固体核磁共振实验表明,样品从无定形态转变为Col相的过程与侧链运动性的不断加强有密切关系.我们也初步探索了剪切场或拉伸场对液晶转变的影响,发现当温度不高时,剪切或拉伸既不改变液晶转变温度,也没有提高液晶态样品的液晶化程度.综合分析多方面的实验结果可以看出,PDAVT的非寻常相行为是熵主导的.侧链的加速运动会增强"甲壳效应",Col相是侧链熵最大化的结果.  相似文献

A series of poly(6-azulenylethynyl)benzenes substituted with n-hexyloxycarbonyl chains at 1,3-positions in azulene rings, i.e., hexakis-, 1,2,4,5-tetrakis-, 1,3,5-tris-, and 1,4-bis(6-azulenylethynyl)benzene derivatives 1, 2, 3, and 4b, have been prepared by a simple one-pot reaction involving repeated Pd-catalyzed alkynylation of halogenated arenes with substituted 6-ethynylazulene and/or ethynylated arenes with substituted 6-bromoazulene under Sonogashira-Hagihara conditions. The redox behavior of these novel poly(6-azulenylethynyl)benzene derivatives was examined by cyclic voltammetry (CV), which revealed the presumed multielectron redox properties. Compound 4b exhibited a one-step, two-electron reduction wave upon CV, which revealed the formation of the dianion stabilized by two 6-azulenylethynyl substituents under electrochemical reduction conditions. Four 6-azulenylethynyl substituents on a benzene ring in a 1,2,4,5 relationship increased the electron-accepting properties because of the formation of a stabilized closed-shell dianionic structure, whereas 3 was reduced at more negative reduction potentials. In contrast to the multistep redox behavior of 2, compound 1 was reduced in one step at -1.28 V upon CV. Compound 1 showed a wide temperature range of columnar mesophases (Col(ho) and Col(ro)) from 77.3 degrees C to the decomposition temperature at ca. 270 degrees C. Compounds 2, 3, and 4b exhibited columnar mesomorphism (Col(ro)) with crystalline polymorphs for 2, unusual triple-melting behavior for 3, and both double-melting behavior and columnar mesomorphism (Col(ho)) for 4b. Therefore, the investigated systems exemplify a new principle for multielectron redox behavior with liquid crystalline properties.  相似文献

Recent advances in the area of glycobiology have been paralleled by progress in our understanding of the physical properties of glycoglycerolipids (GGLs). These advances have been accelerated by interest in the new found roles of these simple glycolipids in nature, by advances in synthetic procedures, and by an interest in the technological application of a group of amphiphiles with unique physical and chemical properties. Here, we consider the phase properties of some GGL/water systems containing either a single hexopyranoside or pentopyranoside headgroup. Recent calorimetric and X-ray diffraction measurements of some GGL diastereomers suggest that both headgroup and interfacial hydration play a major role in determining both lyotropism and mesomorphic phase properties as the chemical structure of the lipid headgroup, interface and hydrocarbon chains are systematically altered. For GGLs of a given chain length, interactions between the headgroup/interface and water determine whether or not a highly ordered, lamellar crystalline phase is formed, the number of such phases and their rate of formation and, in some cases, the nature of the molecular packing of those phases. In the liquid crystalline phases, the hydrocarbon chains determine the area per molecule in the lamellar liquid crystalline phase, but it is the cross-sectional area of the hydrated headgroup and the penetration of water into the interface which determines the nature of the non-lamellar phases, probably through small changes in interfacial geometry as the lateral stresses in the headgroup region increase.  相似文献

We have previously demonstrated that the type of oxadiazole isomers is relatively affected on showing the liquid crystalline properties of the compounds that have the same chemical compositions. In this paper, we presented the synthesis and mesomorphic behaviour of related compounds that possess ester linkage with different substituted groups on para of the phenyl to six derivatives containing 1,3,4-oxadiazole and like another six containing 1,2,4-oxadiazole rings. The formation of these compounds was evidenced by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, elemental analysis and mass techniques. Their mesophase behaviours were studied by optical polarised microscopy (OPM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). All of them presented liquid crystalline properties with nematic (N), smectic A (SmA) and smectic C (SmC) phases typically to calamitic compounds. The effect of substituent group nature and the type of oxadiazole isomers on the liquid crystalline properties of these compounds are analysed and discussed.  相似文献

The effects of functional group position on the phase behavior of discotic mesogens was examined for a series of dibenzophenazine derivatives bearing a carboxylic acid, methyl carboxylate, or nitro group. In all cases, changing the position of the group from the "top" to the "side" of the aromatic core led to dramatic differences in the phase behavior, both in terms of the stability of the liquid crystalline phases as well as the types of mesophases formed. For the non-hydrogen bonding ester and nitro derivatives, moving the substituent to the side of the core led to a lowering of the clearing temperatures or loss of liquid crystallinity. Carboxylic acid derivatives exhibit broad mesophases irrespective of the position of the acid group, but mesogens bearing this group on the side of the core exclusively form Col(h) phases, whereas those with an acid group on the top of the core exhibit more varied mesomorphism, with the formation of Col(h), Col(r), and nematic phases. Contrary to expectations, the presence of a carboxylic acid group on the side of the core does not appear to lead to the formation of dimeric structures in the liquid crystalline phase, although the columnar structures appear to be stabilized by intermolecular hydrogen bonding along the columns. These derivatives also form pi-stacked dimers in solution; the structure of these dimers are consistent with the proposed structure of the columnar phases.  相似文献

The liquid crystalline properties of 1-(alkylamino)-3-[(4'-hexyl-trans-cyclohexyl-4'-phenyl]-prop-1-en-3-one-s, from methyl to octadecyl, and their copper (II) complexes have been examined by optical, DSC, X-ray and EPR methods. The compounds are enantiotropic nematogens except those having the shortest and the longest terminal chains. Short chains promote the SA phase in both ligands and complexes, whereas long chains promote SC and crystal H phases for the ligands or SA and SC phases for the complexes. A partly bilayer smectic Ad phase is observed from ligands terminated with short non-polar substituents. Direct isotropisation from the crystal H phase for some of the compounds, as well as other phase transitions have been studied. The molecular shape of the complexes and the organization of their mesomorphic phases are discussed, based on the refractive indices and X-ray data.  相似文献

An homologous series of 6- O - n -alkyl- alpha -D-galactopyranoses has been prepared. The length of the terminal chains has been varied systematically and the effect on the liquid crystal transition temperatures studied. Most homologues of the series exhibit enantiotropic smectic A* phases. X-ray analysis indicates a lamellar structure for the smectic A* phase with hydrogen-bonded carbohydrate cores at the layer centre, either with no interdigitation of the tilted terminal alkyl chains but with a high degree of chain melting, or with some degree of chain intercalation. The 6- O - n -alkyl- alpha -D-galactopyranoses possess clearing points at higher temperatures than those of the corresponding n -alkyl alpha -D-galactopyranosides. The introduction of a higher degree of hydrogen bonding by the replacement of the oxygen atom in the ether linkage between the chain and the carbohydrate ring by an amide linkage leads to higher transition temperatures. The dependence of the liquid crystalline behaviour on the position of the same alkyl substituent and the nature of the sugar in the pyranose form, as well as on the anomeric configuration of the liquid crystalline carbohydrates with four hydroxy groups, is reported.  相似文献

A new class of non-symmetric dimeric compounds derived from 4-cyano-4′-hydroxybiphenyl in which two rigid parts are connected via flexible spacers have been designed and synthesised. These materials possess trialkoxy chains attached at one end of the molecule, while the other end consists of a biphenyl moiety terminated with the highly polar cyano group. The molecular structures of these dimers have been confirmed by elemental analysis and spectroscopic data and their phase behaviour has been characterised by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Almost all of the synthesised materials exhibit liquid crystalline properties depending on the number of carbon atoms in the terminal chains, where all short chains derivatives form nematic phases and depending on the length of the internal spacer long terminal chains homologues display crystalline or unidentified smectic phase.  相似文献

[(n-C4H9)4N]2[Mo6O18(N-1-C10H(6)-2-CH3)] (1) has been prepared by the reaction of 1-amino-2-methylnaphthalene hydrochloride with [(n-C4H9)4N]4[alpha-Mo8O26] in the presence of 1,3-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. Three solvent-free crystalline phases are isolated from the mixed solvents of acetone and acetic ether. The X-ray single-crystal structures of the three phases have been determined, showing the packing and supramolecular assembly characters (pseudohigher symmetry, helical chains, and pi-pi stacking) by which the effect of solvent polarity and crystallization speed on polymorphism in organic-inorganic hybrids has been demonstrated.  相似文献

A series of [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene-2,7-dicarboxylate derivatives consisting of a flat, conjugated aromatic moiety containing sulphur hetero-atoms and substituted by terminal chains - ethyl, decyl, Z-4-decenyl or 2-(2-butoxyethoxy)ethyl - has been synthesized. These materials exhibit a smectic liquid crystalline phase, the stability of which was found to be strongly dependent on the length and the nature of the terminal chains. In the mesophase, the molecular arrangement within the smectic layer is characterized by a local stacking of the rigid parts similar to that found in discotic columnar systems. The role of hydrogen-bonding interactions in the formation and/or stabilization of liquid crystalline phases has been recognized in recent years and significant work has been conducted. Following the first and well-established examples of liquid crystal formation through the dimerization of aromatic carboxylic acids, several classes of compounds have been prepared by the interaction of complementary molecules, the liquid crystalline behaviour of which is crucially dependent on the structure of the resulting supramolecular systems. In this review the main classes of liquid crystals prepared through hydrogen-bonding interactions are presented, with the aim of establishing, in the first place, the diversity of organic compounds that can be used as building elements in the process of liquid crystal formation. Rigid-rod anisotropic or amphiphilic-type molecules, appropriately functionalized with recognizable moieties, interact in the melt or in solution and lead to the formation of supramolecular complexes that may exhibit thermotropic liquid crystalline character. Depending on the nature, number and position of the groups able to form hydrogen bonds, a diversity of supramolecular structures, both dimeric and polymeric, have been obtained, affording in turn various liquid crystalline phases. The structure and stability of these hydrogen-bonded supramolecular complexes and their relation to the observed liquid crystalline phases are the main topics of this review.  相似文献

Main chain discotic liquid crystalline polymers consisting of triphenylene-based units and alkyl spacers (C8, C10 and C12), connected by ester linkages in the 3- and 6-positions of triphenylene, have been synthesized and their mesomorphic properties were studied by DSC, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. It was found that these polymers exhibit a hexagonal columnar (Col h ) mesophase with intracolumnar order over a wide temperature range. The clearing temperature decreases on increasing the spacer length. It was found that the clearing temperatures are rather higher than that of the corresponding triphenylene monomer having six hexyloxy chains. These polymers form an ordered columnar mesophase, while the corresponding monomeric mesogen shows a disordered columnar phase. In the polymeric system, the fluctuations of the disc-like units in the mesophase are restricted by the connection of the mesogenic units, which stabilizes the columnar mesophase.  相似文献
