We propose a model for calculating J/psi suppression in high-energy hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. We factorized the process into a production of the cc- pairs convoluted with a transition probability into the observed J/psi mesons. As the produced cc- pairs exit the nuclear matter, multiple scattering increases the square of the relative momentum between the c and c- such that some pairs are transmuted into open charm states. With only one parameter, the energy gained by the produced cc- pair per unit length in the nuclear medium, our model can fit all observed J/psi suppression data in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions.  相似文献

The NA50 Collaboration has recently observed that the J/psi production rate in Pb-Pb collisions decreases more rapidly as a function of the transverse energy for the most central collisions than for less central ones. We show that this phenomenon can be understood as an effect of transverse energy fluctuations in central collisions. A good fit of the data is obtained using a model which relates J/psi suppression to the local energy density. Our results suggest that the J/psi is completely suppressed at the highest densities achieved in Pb-Pb collisions.  相似文献

The NA60 experiment studies muon pair production at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. In this Letter we report on a precision measurement of J/psi in In-In collisions. We have studied the J/psi centrality distribution, and we have compared it with the one expected if absorption in cold nuclear matter were the only active suppression mechanism. For collisions involving more than approximately 80 participant nucleons, we find that an extra suppression is present. This result is in qualitative agreement with previous Pb-Pb measurements by the NA50 experiment, but no theoretical explanation is presently able to coherently describe both results.  相似文献

One of the challenges in relating experimental measurements of the suppression in the number of J/psi mesons produced in heavy ion collisions to lattice QCD calculations is that whereas the lattice calculations treat J/psi mesons at rest, in a heavy ion collision a cc[over ] pair can have a significant velocity with respect to the hot fluid produced in the collision. The putative J/psi finds itself in a hot wind. We present the first rigorous nonperturbative calculation of the consequences of a wind velocity v on the screening length L(s) for a heavy quark-antiquark pair in hot N=4 supersymmetric QCD. We find L(s)(v,T)=f(v)[1-v(2)](1/4)/piT with f(v) only mildly dependent on v and the wind direction. This L(s)(v,T) approximately L(s)(0,T)/sqrt[gamma] velocity scaling, if realized in QCD, provides a significant additional source of J/psi suppression at transverse momenta which are high but within experimental reach.  相似文献

At the chiral restoration/deconfinement transition, most hadrons undergo a Mott transition from being bound states in the confined phase to resonances in the deconfined phase. We investigate the consequences of this qualitative change in the hadron spectrum on final state interactions of charmonium in hot and dense matter, and show that the Mott effect for D-mesons leads to a critical enhancement of the J/ψ dissociation rate. Anomalous J/ψ suppression in the NA50 experiment is discussed as well as the role of the Mott effect for the heavy-flavor kinetics in future experiments at the LHC. The status of our calculations of hadron–hadron cross sections using the quark interchange and chiral Lagrangian approaches is reviewed, and an ansatz for a unification of these schemes is given.  相似文献

We present preliminary results on J/? production in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 GeV/nucleon, obtained in the analysis of the most recent data sample collected by NA50 experiment in year 2000. The results are compared with an updated absorption curve deduced from new high statistics protonnucleus data. The measurements reported here confirm the anomalous J/? suppression already observed by NA50 from previously collected data samples.  相似文献

Two-particle correlations of negative pions as a function of charged particle multiplicity are studied in Pb+Pb collisions at GeV per nucleon using the NA44 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron(SPS). We find that the source size parameters increase with the charged particle multiplicity. However the slope of the source size parameters plotted as a function of charged multiplicity is slightly larger at high multiplicity than at low multiplicity. The value of is independent of charged multiplicity. For Pb+Pb collisions, is larger than and for all multiplicity intervals, whereas these three radius parameters were approximately equal in S+Nucleus collisions. The ratios () and () for Pb+Pb data show almost no dependence on charged multiplicity. The duration of pion emission is constant at 3.81.1 fm/c as a function of the charged multiplicity in Pb+Pb collisions. Effective volume (V) is also calculated as V=, assuming a cylindrically shaped source. We found, within the limited statistics, the effective volume rapidly increases at high multiplicity. The transverse mass spectra of Omega, J/psi, and psi' in Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV are studied within a hydrodynamical model of the quark-gluon-plasma expansion and hadronization. The model reproduces the existing data with the common hadronization parameters: temperature T = T(H) congruent with 170 MeV and average collective transverse velocity v(T) congruent with 0.2.  相似文献

Recent measurements by the Belle Collaboration of the exclusive production of two charmonia in e(+)e(-) annihilation differ substantially from theoretical predictions. We suggest that a significant part of the discrepancy can be explained by the process e(+)e(-)-->J/psi+J/psi. Because the J/psi+J/psi production process can proceed through fragmentation of two virtual photons into two cc pairs, its cross section may be larger than that for J/psi+eta(c) by about a factor of 3.7, in spite of a suppression factor alpha(2)/alpha(2)(s) that is associated with the QED and QCD coupling constants.  相似文献

The growth of Pb islands on a Si(111) surface exhibits many interesting properties. For example, the self-assembled process results in a homogeneous distribution of Pb islands with uniform height. The dependence of this height on coverage and temperature can be expressed as a phase diagram [1]. In this paper we develop a model of the growth process that reflects the main features of the experimental observations and determines the key processes of quantum dot formation in a Pb/Si(111) system. The growth of islands is simulated by the Monte Carlo method. With suitably chosen parameters the model is able to reconstruct the phase diagram, via the dependence of the dynamics of Pb atoms on area and height. These dependencies are attributed to stress energy and quantum size effects.  相似文献

Measurements of the suppression of the yield per nucleon of J/psi and psi(') production for 800 GeV/ c protons incident on heavy nuclear targets, relative to light nuclear targets, have been made with very broad coverage in x(F) and p(T). The observed suppression is smallest at x(F) values of 0.25 and below, and increases at larger values of x(F). It is also strongest at small p(T). Substantial differences between psi(') and J/psi production are observed for the first time in p-A collisions. The suppression for psi(') production is stronger than that for J/psi for x(F) near zero, but becomes comparable to that for J/psi for x(F)>0.6.  相似文献

We present a new determination of the ratio of cross-sections as expected for nucleus-nucleus reactions if would only be normally absorbed by nuclear matter. This anticipated behaviour is based on proton-nucleus data exclusively, and compared, as a function of centrality, with updated S-U results from experiment NA38 and with the most recent Pb-Pb results from experiment NA50. Particle production in central Pb+Pb collisions was studied with the NA49 large acceptance spectrometer at the CERN SPS at beam energies of 20, 30, 40, 80 and 158 GeV per nucleon. A change of the energy dependence is observed around 30A GeV for the yields of pions and strange particles as well as for the shapes of the transverse mass spectra. The energy dependence of fluctuations and correlations shows no structure. At present only a reaction scenario with onset of deconfinement is able to reproduce the measurements.  相似文献

Next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD corrections to double J/psi production in e+e- annihilation at sqrt[s]=10.6 GeV are calculated. We find that they greatly decrease the cross section, with a K factor (NLO/LO) ranging from -0.31 to 0.25 depending on the renormalization scale. Although the renormalization scale dependence indicates a large uncertainty, when combined with the NLO QCD corrections to J/psi+etac production, it can explain why the double J/psi production could not be found at B factories while the J/psi+etac production could, despite the fact that cross section of the former is larger than that of the latter at LO by a factor of 1.8.  相似文献

We study the baryonic charmonium decays of B mesons B+-->etacK+ and B+-->J/psiK+, where the etac and J/psi subsequently decay into a pp[over] or LambdaLambda[over] pair. We measure the J/psi-->pp[over] and LambdaLambda[over] anisotropy parameters alphaB=-0.60+/-0.13+/-0.14 (pp[over]), -0.44+/-0.51+/-0.31 (LambdaLambda[over ]) and compare to results from e;{+}e;{-}-->J/psi formation experiments. We also report the first observation of etac-->LambdaLambda[over]. The measured branching fraction is B(etac-->LambdaLambda[over ])=(0.87(+0.24)/(-0.21)(stat)(+0.09/-0.14) (syst)+/-0.27(PDG))x10-3. This study is based on a 357 fb-1 data sample recorded on the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ e- collider.  相似文献

The fragmentation processes of a medium mass system and of a very massive one formed in central collisions are compared within the Landau-Vlasov model taking into account both the isospin dependence and the two-body residual interactions. The simulations predict the formation of a roughly ellipsoidal source in the central Pb + Ag reactions while, for the Pb + Au system, the fragmentation occurs from an hollow source, the configuration of which being intermediate between bubble-like and toroidal shapes. This different shapes explain and allow to reproduce semi-quantitatively the two different profiles of the experimental kinetic energy spectra.  相似文献

We construct three simple scenarios of the time dependence of density of intermediate stage gluons in nuclear collisions in the CERN SPS energy range. Gluons with energy of about 0.6–1.0 GeV are assumed to be produced in nucleon-nucleon collisions in a Glauber type model. The rate of gluon production is given by the parameter n g/nn equal to the average number of gluons produced per nucleon-nucleon collision. The value of this parameter determines the behaviour of the gas of gluons. The number of gluons increases due to gluon branching and processes like g+g → g+g+g and decreases due to the hadronization. Gluons are assumed to be able to dissociate J/ψ in g+J/ψ collisions, the dissociation cross-section σ is taken as a free parameter. In the first scenario, the energy density of the gas of gluons never reaches the critical energy density ε c ≈ 0.7 GeV/fm3 and gluons rapidly hadronize. In the second scenario, the critical energy density is reached but the system of gluons is unable to reach thermalization. In the third scenario gluons reach thermalization and the thermalized system suppresses J/ψ by the Matsui-Satz mechanism. The third scenario under the assumption of a small value of σ is able to describe qualitatively the data on J/ψ suppression in Pb?Pb interactions obtained by the NA50 Collaboration. Other scenarios have problems with getting the rather abrupt onset of J/ψ suppression.  相似文献

The specific heat of typical relaxors, Pb(Mg(1/3)Nb(2/3))O3 (PMN) and Pb(Mg(1/3)Ta(2/3))O3 (PMT), was measured by adiabatic and relaxation methods between 2 and 420 K. A broad anomaly was found in the specific heat curve over the wide temperature range between 150 and 500 K for PMN, and between 50 and 400 K for PMT, which provides evidence for the formation of ferroelectric nanoregions (FNR) in the paraelectric matrix. The entropy of the anomaly was estimated as 3.3 J K(-1) mol(-1) and 2.9 J K(-1) mol(-1) for PMN and PMT, respectively, which implies an order-disorder-type mechanism for the formation of FNR.  相似文献
