Stretchable conductive hydrogels have received significant attention due to their possibility of being utilized in wearable electronics and healthcare devices. In this work, a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (SIPN) strategy was employed to fabricate a set of flexible, stretchable and conductive composite hydrogels composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in the presence of glutaraldehyde as the crosslinker, HCl as the catalyst and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) as the conductive medium. The results from FTIR, Raman, SEM and TGA indicate that a chemical crosslinking network and interactions of PVA and PEDOT:PSS exist in the SIPN hydrogels. The swelling ratio of hydrogels decreased with increasing content of PEDOT:PSS. Due to the chemical crosslinking network and interactions of PVA and PEDOT:PSS, PVA networks semi-interpenetrated with PEDOT:PSS exhibited excellent tensile and compression properties. The tensile strength and elongation at breakage of the composite hydrogels with 0.14 wt% PEDOT:PSS were 70 KPa and 239%, respectively. The compression stress of the composite hydrogels with 0.14 wt% PEDOT:PSS at a strain of 50% was about 216 KPa. The electrical conductivity of the hydrogels increased with increasing PEDOT:PSS content. The flexible, stretchable and conductive properties endow the composite hydrogel sensor with a superior gauge factor of up to 4.4 (strain: 100%). Coupling the strain sensing capability to the flexibility, good mechanical properties and high electrical conductivity, we consider that the designed PVA/PEDOT:PSS composite hydrogels have promising applications in wearable devices, such as flexible electronic skin and sensitive strain sensors.  相似文献

PANI aqueous nanocolloids in their acid-doped, inherently conductive form were synthesised by means of suitable water soluble polymers used as stabilisers. In particular, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) or chitosan (CT) was used to stabilise PANI nanoparticles, thus preventing PANI precipitation during synthesis and upon storage. Subsequently, e-beam irradiation of the PANI dispersions has been performed with a 12 MeV Linac accelerator. PVA-PANI nanocolloid has been transformed into a PVA-PANI hydrogel nanocomposite by radiation induced crosslinking of PVA. CT-PANI nanoparticles dispersion, in turn, was added to PVA to obtain wall-to-wall gels, as chitosan mainly undergoes chain scission under the chosen irradiation conditions. While the obtainment of uniform PANI particle size distribution was preliminarily ascertained with laser light scattering and TEM microscopy, the typical porous structure of PVA-based freeze dried hydrogels was observed with SEM microscopy for the hydrogel nanocomposites. UV?visible absorption spectroscopy demonstrates that the characteristic, pH-dependent and reversible optical absorption properties of PANI are conferred to the otherwise optically transparent PVA hydrogels. Selected formulations have been also subjected to MTT assays to prove the absence of cytotoxicity.  相似文献

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels with high water content, good load‐bearing property, low frictional behavior as well as excellent biocompatibility have been considered as promising cartilage replacement materials. However, the lack of sufficient mechanical properties and cell adhesion are two critical barriers for their application as cartilage substitutes. To address these problems, herein, methacrylated PVA with low degree of substitution of methacryloyl group has been synthesized first. Then, methacrylated PVA‐glycidyl methacrylate/hydroxyapatite (PVA‐GMA/Hap) nanocomposite hydrogels have been developed by the photopolymerization approach subsequently. Markedly, both pure PVA‐GMA hydrogel and PVA‐GMA/Hap nanocomposite hydrogels exhibit excellent performance in compressive tests, and they are undamaged during compressive stress–strain tests. Moreover, compared to pure PVA‐GMA hydrogels, 8.5‐fold, 7.4‐fold, and 14.2‐fold increase in fracture stress, Young's modulus and toughness, respectively, can be obtained for PVA‐GMA/Hap nanocomposite hydrogels with 10 wt % Hap nanoparticles. These enhancements can be ascribed to the intrinsic property of PVA‐GMA and strong hydrogen bonding interactions between PVA‐GMA chain and Hap nanoparticles. More interestingly, significant improvement in the cell adhesion can also be successfully achieved by incorporation of Hap nanoparticles. These biocompatible nanocomposite hydrogels have great potential to be used as cartilage substitutes. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2019, 57, 1882–1889  相似文献

Lightweight and flexible biosensors that can sustain mechanical deformation and can be adhered to human skin is an interesting field of study. In the current article, a systematic study on development of thermally exfoliated graphene oxide (TEGO)–reinforced poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)–based conductive hydrogel nanocomposites has been reported. The free‐standing hydrogels were synthesized using controlled and repetitive freeze‐thaw cycles. The samples were then studied for their mechanical as well as electrical properties. The hydrogels were characterized for their microstructural, chemical, and rheological properties to understand the observed macroscopic properties. Additionally, a study on the behavior of hydrogels immersed in phosphate‐buffered saline (PBS) was carried out to investigate their hydrolytic stability within simulated biological environment. Overall, the nanocomposite hydrogels demonstrated excellent static and dynamic mechanical performance, stability in PBS, considerable electrical conductivity, and significant electrical response to applied external stress, establishing their potential for use as flexible biosensors.  相似文献

Conductive hydrogels are a class of stretchable conductive materials that are important for various applications. However, water‐based conductive hydrogels inevitably lose elasticity and conductivity at subzero temperatures, which severely limits their applications at low temperatures. Herein we report anti‐freezing conductive organohydrogels by using an H2O/ethylene glycol binary solvent as dispersion medium. Owing to the freezing tolerance of the binary solvent, our organohydrogels exhibit stable flexibility and strain‐sensitivity in the temperature range from −55.0 to 44.6 °C. Meanwhile, the solvent molecules could form hydrogen bonds with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) chains and induce the crystallization of PVA, greatly improving the mechanical strength of the organohydrogels. Furthermore, the non‐covalent crosslinks endow the conductive organohydrogels with intriguing remoldability and self‐healing capability, which are important for practical applications.  相似文献

Nanocomposites of inherently conductive polyaniline (PANI) within a highly hydrophilic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based hydrogel have been produced by coupling a conventional dispersion chemical oxidative polymerization to a subsequent high energy irradiation step, in order to convert the polymer stabilizing the aqueous dispersion, namely the PVA, into a highly water swollen hydrogel incorporating the PANI particles. The incorporation of the electroactive and “pH-sensitive” polymer into a transparent and highly permeable hydrogel matrix has been pursued as a route to the development of a novel class of potentially biocompatible, smart hydrogels that can respond to changes of the surrounding environment with measurable changes in their optical properties. Absorption spectra show that the optical absorption bands typical of PANI, known to be reversibly affected by changes of the polymer oxidation state or pH or both, are well preserved in the PVA hydrogels. Even more interestingly, fluorescence is observed from the nanoparticles of PANI in its inherently conductive form, whose intensity is strongly affected by changes of pH. This has enhanced the importance of this material to a large extent from both a scientific and a practical point of view.  相似文献

Synergistically taking the advantage of distinctive porous matrix, luminophore and functional nanoparticles, we prepared functional nanocomposite hydrogel combining the hydrophilic three-dimensional network of hydrogels as matrix for the adsorption of luminophore, Ru(bpy)32+, and in situ grown gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as the conductive. Interestingly, the designed nanocomposite hydrogel shows external pressure resposnsive properties, which precisely tune the distance between the AuNPs becomes shorter, resulting in a remarkable amplification of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) signals. Additionally, differing from the poor stability of conventional ECL, uniform dispersion of the Ru(bpy)32+ over nanocomposite hydrogel significantly enhanced the long term stability of ECL.  相似文献

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) can be embedded within hydrogels to form tough and strong nanocomposite materials, which possess biomimetic properties from hydrogels including good biocompatibility, permeability and flexible mechanical characteristics. There are many potential applications for these strong nanocomposite hydrogels in medical devices, such as wound dressing or super absorbents. Whereas, the research on the mechanical properties of CNC reinforced nanocomposite remains at superficial level, and their nonlinear mechanical responses are rarely investigated in previous reports. Mechanical characteristics of CNC reinforced poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) nanocomposite hydrogels, in terms of stress–strain correlations, fracture mechanism, and cyclic stretching responses, have been investigated in this work. Experimental results show that the modulus of the nanocomposite hydrogel tends to increase with increasing CNC content. Theoretical foundation for analysing the mechanical properties of hydrogels based on Mooney–Rivlin hyperelastic model, Voigt model and Reuss model has been developed and validated, which provides the prediction of the mechanical responses of CNC reinforced nanocomposite hydrogel to tension, especially the nonlinear responding behaviour.  相似文献

A novel stimuli-responsive organic/inorganic nanocomposite hydrogel (NC hydrogel) with excellent mechanical properties was synthesized by in situ polymerization of 2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethyl methacrylate (MEO(2)MA), oligo (ethylene glycol) methacrylate (OEGMA) and acrylic acid (AAc), as the polymeric matrix (PMOA), and fibrillar attpulgite (AT), as the reinforcer and cross-linker. The effect of the AT content on the mechanical properties for the swollen and dried NC hydrogels was determined by tensile testing and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), respectively. The tensile testing results showed that the incorporation of AT nanoparticles significantly enhanced the mechanical properties of NC hydrogels. As the content of AT increased, the tensile strength, tensile modulus and effective cross-linked chain density increased. The DMA results showed that the storage modulus of AT/PMOA NC hydrogels was increased and the glass transition temperatures shifted to higher temperature compared to the pure PMOA hydrogel, which further indicated that the enhancement of mechanical property depended upon the presence and content of AT. In addition, the faster swelling rates of the NC hydrogels were observed in comparison with the corresponding physically cross-linked PMOA hydrogel, except for 1% AT/PMOA sample. However, the deswelling kinetics of NC hydrogels was obviously retarded.  相似文献

A facile method to fabricate tough and highly stretchable polyacrylamide (PAM) nanocomposite physical hydrogel (NCP gel) was proposed. The hydrogels are dually crosslinked single network with the PAM grafted vinyl hybrid silica nanoparticles (VSNPs) as the analogous covalent crosslinking points and the reversible hydrogen bonds among the PAM chains as the physical crosslinking points. In order to further elucidate the toughening mechanism of the PAM NCP gel, especially to understand the role of the dual crosslinking points, the PAM hybrid hydrogels (H gels) and a series of poly(acrylamide-co-dimethylacrylamide) (P(AM-co-DMAA)) NCP gels were designed and fabricated. Their mechanical properties were compared with those of the PAM NCP gels. The PAM H gels are prepared by simply mixing the PAM chains with bare silica nanoparticles (SNPs). Relative to the poor mechanical properties of the PAM H gel, the PAM NCP gel is remarkably tough and stretchable and also generates large number of micro-cracks to stop notch propagation, indicating the important role of PAM grafted VSNPs in toughening the NCP gel. In the P(AM-co-DMAA) NCP gels, the P(AM-co-DMAA) chains are grafted on VSNPs and the polydimethylacrylamide (PDMAA) only forms very weak hydrogen bonds between themselves. It is found that mechanical properties of the PAM NCP gel, such as the tensile strength and the elongation at break, are enhanced significantly, but those of the P(AM-co-DMAA) NCP gels decreased rapidly with decreasing AM content. This result reveals the role of the hydrogen bonds among the grafted polymer chains as the physical crosslinking points in toughening the NCP gel.  相似文献

Polyacrylamide (PAM) was used as a matrix material for fabricating novel nanocomposite hydrogels reinforced with natural chitosan nanofibers (CNFs) via in situ free-radical polymerization. The nanocomposite's structure, strength, morphology and rheological properties were investigated. The results showed that the CNFs had a strong interaction with PAM through hydrogen and covalent bondings. The CNFs acted as a multifunctional cross-linker and a reinforcing agent in the hydrogel system. The compression strength and storage modulus of the nanocomposite hydrogels were significantly higher than those of the pure PAM hydrogels and the corresponding PAM/chitosan semi-interpenetrating polymer network (PAM-SIPN) hydrogels. The swelling ratio (SR) of the nanocomposite hydrogels was lower than that of the PAM hydrogel, but was similar to that of the PAM-SIPN hydrogel. Among the CNF contents used, the 1.5 wt% CNF loading level showed the best combined swelling and mechanical properties for the hydrogels.  相似文献

In this work, we report a facile method for the preparation of tough and highly stretchable physical hydrogels by dual cross-linking composed of vinyl-hybrid silica nanoparticles(VSNPs) as multivalent covalent cross-linking and hydrogen bonding as physical cross-linking. Poly(acrylic acid) nanocomposite physical hydrogels(NCP gels) are obtained without adding any organic chemical cross-linkers. When the content of VSNPs is 0.7 wt%(relative to the monomer), the NCP gels exhibit good mechanical properties(fracture strength = 370 k Pa, elongation at break = 2200%) and a high swelling capacity in both deionized water(2300 g/g) and saline(220 g/g). Meanwhile, the NCP gels have good recovery ability.  相似文献

A number of synthetic hydrogels suffer from low mechanical strength. Despite of the recent advances in the fabrication of tough hydrogels, it is still a great challenge to simultaneously construct high stretchability, and self-adhesive and self-healing capability in a hydrogel. Herein, a new type of double network hydrogel was prepared based on irreversible cross-linking of polyacrylamide chains and Schiff-base reversible cross-linking between glycidyl methacrylate-grafted ethylenediamine and oxidized sodium alginate (OSA). The combination of both cross-linkings and their synergistic effect provided a novel hydrogel with high strength, stretchable, rapid self-healing, and self-adhesiveness to different material. Besides, the hydrogels with diverse OSA content could maintain their original shapes after loading–unloading tensile test. The resulting hydrogel has a great potential in various fields for supporting and load-bearing substance.  相似文献

Polymer gels as soft biomaterials have found diverse applications in biomedical field, e.g. in management and care of wound as wound dressing. The recent researches on nanocomposite materials have shown that some properties of polymers and gels significantly improve by adding organoclay into polymeric matrix. In this work, in order to obtain wound dressing with better properties, nanocomposite hydrogel wound dressing was prepared using combination of polyvinyl alcohol hydogel and organoclay, i.e. Na-montmorillonite, via the freezing-thawing method. The effect of organoclay quantity on the structural, swelling, physical and mechanical properties of nanocomposite hydrogel wound dressing was investigated. The results showed that the nanocomposite hydrogels could meet the essential requirements for the reasonable wound dressing with some desirable characteristics such as relatively good swelling, appreciated vapour transmission rate, excellent barrierity against microbe penetration and mechanical properties. The results also indicated that the quantity of the clay added to the nanocomposite hydrogel is the key factor in obtaining such suitable properties required for wound dressing.  相似文献

Responsive hydrogels have the ability to change their volume, transparency, or other properties in response to external chemical and/or physical stimuli. The responsiveness properties including responsive rate and degree, as well as mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, toughness, breaking strength, and breaking strain are crucial parameters of the smart hydrogels that determine the scope of hydrogel applications such as soft actuators, artificial muscles, and tissue engineering scaffolds. In this paper, the development of the nanocomposite smart hydrogels, which can achieve both improved responsiveness and mechanical properties, is reviewed. First, the fabrication approaches for building the nanocomposite networks by doping organic or inorganic nanomaterials via crosslinking or blending strategies are introduced. Then, the mechanisms used to improve both responsiveness and mechanical properties of nanocomposite responsive hydrogels are discussed. Finally, the perspectives as well as current challenges of such nanocomposite responsive hydrogels are addressed. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Rod-shaped cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were manufactured and used to reinforce polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogels through in situ free-radical polymerization. The gelation process of the nanocomposite hydrogels was monitored on a rheometer using oscillatory shear. The chemical structure, morphology, swelling property, and compression strength of the formed gels were investigated. A possible mechanism for forming hydrogels was proposed. The results showed that CNCs accelerated the formation of hydrogels and increased the effective crosslink density of hydrogels. Thus CNCs were not only a reinforcing agent for hydrogel, but also acted as a multifunctional cross-linker for gelation. The shear storage modulus, compression strength and elastic modulus of the nanocomposite hydrogels were significantly improved because of good dispersion of CNCs in PAM as well as enhanced interfacial interaction between these two components. Among the CNC contents used, a loading of 6.7 w/w% led to the maximum mechanical properties for nanocomposite hydrogels.  相似文献
