Polyelectrolyte multilayer films containing nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) make up a new class of nanostructured composite with applications ranging from coatings to biomedical devices. Moreover, these materials are amenable to surface force studies using colloid-probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM). For electrostatically assembled films with either NCC or PAH as the outermost layer, surface morphology was investigated by AFM and wettability was examined by contact angle measurements. By varying the surrounding ionic strength and pH, the relative contributions from electrostatic, van der Waals, steric, and polymer bridging interactions were evaluated. The ionic cross-linking in these films rendered them stable under all solution conditions studied although swelling at low pH and high ionic strength was inferred. The underlying polymer layer in the multilayered film was found to dictate the dominant surface forces when polymer migration and chain extension were facilitated. The precontact normal forces between a silica probe and an NCC-capped multilayer film were monotonically repulsive at pH values where the material surfaces were similarly and fully charged. In contrast, at pH 3.5, the anionic surfaces were weakly charged but the underlying layer of cationic PAH was fully charged and attractive forces dominated due to polymer bridging from extended PAH chains. The interaction with an anionic carboxylic acid probe showed similar behavior to the silica probe; however, for a cationic amine probe with an anionic NCC-capped film, electrostatic double-layer attraction at low pH, and electrostatic double-layer repulsion at high pH, were observed. Finally, the effect of the capping layer was studied with an anionic probe, which indicated that NCC-capped films exhibited purely repulsive forces which were larger in magnitude than the combination of electrostatic double-layer attraction and steric repulsion, measured for PAH-capped films. Wherever possible, DLVO theory was used to fit the measured surface forces and apparent surface potentials and surface charge densities were calculated.  相似文献

The interaction between a lignin film and a cellulose sphere has been measured using the colloidal probe force technique as a function of aqueous electrolyte solution conditions. The lignin film was first studied for its roughness and stability using atomic force microscopy imaging and quartz crystal microbalance measurements, respectively. The film was found to be smooth and stable in the pH range of 3.5-9 and in ionic strengths up to and including 0.01 M. This range of ionic strength and pH was hence used to measure the surface force profiles between lignin and cellulose. Under these solution conditions, the measured forces behaved according to DLVO theory. The force-distance curves could be fitted between the limits of constant charge and constant potential, and the surface potential of the lignin films was determined as a function of pH. At a pH greater than 9.5, a short range steric repulsion was observed, indicating that the film was swelling to a large extent but did not dissolve. Thus, lignin films prepared in this manner are suitable for a range of surface force studies.  相似文献

A systematic study of the surface forces between a cellulose sphere and cellulose thin films of varying crystallinity has been conducted as a function of ionic strength and pH. Semicrystalline cellulose II surfaces and amorphous cellulose films were prepared by spin-coating of the precursor cellulose solutions onto oxidized silicon wafers before regeneration in water. Crystalline cellulose I surfaces were prepared by spin-coating wafers with aqueous suspensions of sulfate-stabilized cellulose I nanocrystals. These preparation methods produced thin, smooth films suitable for surface forces measurements. The interaction with the cellulose I was monotonically repulsive at pH 3.5, 5.8, and 8.5 and at 0.1, 1, and 10 mM ionic strengths. This was attributed to the presence of strongly ionizable sulfur-containing groups on the cellulose nanocrystal surfaces. The amorphous film typically showed a steric interaction up to 100 nm away from the interface that was independent of the solution conditions. A range of surface forces were successfully measured on the semicrystalline cellulose II films; attractive and repulsive regimes were observed, depending on pH and ionic strength, and were interpreted in terms of van der Waals and electrostatic interactions. Clearly, the forces acting near cellulose surfaces are very dependent on the way the cellulose surface has been prepared.  相似文献

Self-organized multilayer films were formed by sequential addition of oppositely charged cellulose I nanoparticles. The all-cellulosic multilayers were prepared via adsorption of cationicially modified cellulose nanofibrils (cat NFC) and anionic short crystalline cellulose (CNC) at pH 4.5 and pH 8.3. The properties and build-up behavior of layer-by-layer-constructed films were studied with microgravimetry (QCM-D) and the direct surface forces in these systems were explored with colloidal probe microscopy to gain information about the fundamental interplay between cat NFC and anionic CNC. The importance of the first layer on the adsorption of the consecutive layers was demonstrated by comparing pure in situ adsorption in the QCM-D with multilayer films made by spin coating the first cationic NFC layer and then subsequently adsorbing the following layers in situ in the QCM-D chamber. Differences in adsorbed amount and viscoelastic behavior were observed between those two systems. In addition, a significant pH dependence of cat NFC charge was found for both direct surface interactions and layer properties. Moreover the underlying cellulose layer in multilayer film was established to influence the surface forces especially at lower pH, where the cat NFC chains extensions were facilitated and overall charge was affected by the cationic counterpart within the layers. This enhanced understanding the effect of charge and structure on the interaction between these renewable nanoparticles is valuable when designing novel materials based on nanocellulose.

A method of preparing model cellulose surfaces by the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique with horizontal dipping procedure has been developed. The primary aim for the use of these surfaces was adsorption studies performed with the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) instrument. Hydrophobised cellulose (trimethylsilyl cellulose, TMSC) was deposited on the hydrophobic, polystyrene-coated QCM-D crystal. After 15 dipping cycles, the TMSC film fully covers the crystal surface. TMSC can easily be hydrolysed back to cellulose with acid hydrolysis. With this method a smooth, rigid, thin and reproducible cellulose film was obtained. Its morphology, coverage, chemical composition and wetting was further characterised using atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and contact angle measurements. The swelling behaviour and the stability of the cellulose film in aqueous solutions at different ionic strengths were studied using the QCM-D instrument. The swelling/deswelling properties of the cellulose film were those expected of polyelectrolytes with low charge density; some swelling occurred in pure water and the swelling decreased when the ionic strength was increased. No significant layer softening was detected during the swelling. The effect of electrolyte concentration and polymer charge density on the adsorption of cationic polyelectrolytes on the cellulose surface was also investigated. At low electrolyte concentration less of the highly charged PDADMAC was adsorbed as compared to low charged C-PAM. The adsorbed amount of PDADMAC increased with increasing ionic strength and a more compact layer was formed while the effect of electrolyte concentration on the adsorption of C-PAM was not as pronounced.  相似文献

Streaming current measurements were performed on poly(N-isopropylacrylamid-co-carboxyacrylamid) (PNiPAAM-co-carboxyAAM) soft thin films over a broad range of pH and salt concentration (pH 2.5-10, 0.1-10 mM KCl) at a constant temperature of 22 °C. The films are negatively charged because of the ionization of the carboxylic acid groups in the repeat unit of the copolymer. For a given salt concentration, the absolute value of the streaming current exhibits an unconventional, nonmonotonous dependence on pH with the presence of a maximum at pH ~6.4. This maximum is most pronounced at low electrolyte concentration and gradually disappears with increasing salinity. Complementary ellipsometry data further reveal that the average film thickness increases by a factor of ~2.2 with increasing pH over the whole range of salt concentration examined. The larger the solution salt concentration, the lower the pH value where expansion of the hydrogel layer starts to take place. The dependence of film thickness on pH and electrolyte concentration remarkably follows that obtained for surface conductivity. The streaming current and surface conductivity results could be consistently interpreted on a quantitative basis using the theory we previously derived for the electrokinetics of charged diffuse (heterogeneous) soft thin films complemented here by the derivation of a general expression for the surface conductivity of such systems. In particular, the maximum in streaming current versus pH is unambiguously attributed to the presence of an interphasial gradient in polymer segment density following the heterogeneous expansion of the chains within the film upon swelling with increasing pH. A quantitative inspection of the data further suggests that pK values of ionogenic groups in the film as derived from the streaming current and surface conductivity data differ by ~0.9 pH unit. Such a difference is attributed to the impact of position-dependent hydrophobicity across the film on the degree of ionization of carboxylic sites.  相似文献

Adsorption of proteins onto film surfaces built up layer by layer from oppositely charged polyelectrolytes is a complex phenomenon, governed by electrostatic forces, hydrogen bonds, and hydrophobic interactions. The amounts of the interacting charges, however, both in polyelectrolytes and in proteins adsorbed on such films are a function of the pH of the solution. In addition, the number and the accessibility of free charges in proteins depend on the secondary structure of the protein. The subtle interplay of all these factors determines the adsorption of the proteins onto the polyelectrolyte film surfaces. We investigated the effect of these parameters for polyelectrolyte films built up from weak "protein-like" polyelectrolytes (i.e., polypeptides), poly(L-lysine) (PLL), and poly(glutamic acid) (PGA) and for the adsorption of human serum albumin (HSA) onto these films in the pH range 3.0-10.5. It was found that the buildup of the polyelectrolyte films is not a simple function of the pure charges of the individual polyelectrolytes, as estimated from their respective pKa values. The adsorption of HSA onto (PLL/PGA)n films depended strongly on the polyelectrolyte terminating the film. For PLL-terminated polyelectrolyte films, at low pH, repulsion, as expected, is limiting the adsorption of HSA (having net positive charge below pH 4.6) since PLL is also positively charged here. At high pH values, an unexpected HSA uptake was found on the PGA-ending films, even when both PGA and HSA were negatively charged. It is suggested that the higher surface rugosity and the decrease of the alpha-helix content at basic pH values (making accessible certain charged groups of the protein for interactions with the polyelectrolyte film) could explain this behavior.  相似文献

Aqueous thin film studies and surface tension measurements on a mixed surfactant system consisting of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), which was chosen as a model flotation frother, and potassium ethyl xanthate, which was chosen as a model flotation collector, enable the interaction between the two surfactants at the air/solution interface to be elucidated.

For the film containing the non-ionic frother, the interface was charged and addition of low concentrations of xanthate acted as a common electrolyte and reduced the thickness of the film, inducing rupture. However, at high xanthate collector concentrations, the negatively charged xanthate was found to interact with the non-ionic PEO causing an accumulation of negative charge at the air/solution interface. Higher frother concentrations were necessary to produce non-rupturing thin films upon increasing the xanthate concentration.  相似文献

TiO(2) and SiO(2) porous thin films consisting of tilted nanocolumns prepared by glancing angle evaporation (GLAD) have been infiltrated with guest derivatives belonging to the family of perchlorinated trityl radicals, novel guest molecules presenting an open-shell electronic configuration associated with paramagnetism, fluorescence, and electroactivity. The main driving forces for infiltration from aqueous solutions of the carboxylate-substituted radical derivatives are the electrostatic interactions between their negative charge and the net positive charges induced on the film pores. Positive charges on the internal surface of the films were induced by either adjusting the radical solution pH at values lower than the point of zero charge (PZC) of the oxide or passivating the nanocolumns oxide surface with a positively charged aminosilane. The infiltrated composite thin films are robust and easy to handle thanks to the physical protection exerted by the film columns. They also keep the multifunctionality of the used guests, as confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), UV-vis spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. To prove the electroactivity of the infiltrated porous films, a porous TiO(2) host layer was supported onto conductive indium tin oxide (ITO). By application of an appropriate redox potential, the guest radical molecules have been reversibly switched from their open-shell electronic configuration to their diamagnetic state and hence changed their optical properties. On the basis of these results, it is herein proposed that the appropriate surface functionalization of the pore internal surface of GLAD thin films can be used to prepare novel radical-oxide composite thin films usable for the development of robust switchable electrically driven photonic and magnetic devices.  相似文献

The stability of thin water films on silicon substrates coated with cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes was investigated by the thin film pressure balance technique. Depending on the surface charge of the substrate, the water films are either stable (on negatively charged wafers) or rupture rapidly (on positively charged wafers). It is supposed that this behavior is due to a negative surface charge of the free water surface. The underlying assumption that the films' stability is due to electrostatic interactions is supported by measurements of the disjoining pressure on silicon wafers with a native oxide layer, which indicates a decrease of the film thickness, and thus decreasing repulsive interaction between the two film interfaces, with increasing ionic strength.  相似文献

Regenerated cellulose films were laminated using very thin layers of the protein Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) as an adhesive. The wet delamination strength was measured as functions of pH, lamination time, temperature and pressure, as well as cellulose oxidation. Drying at elevated temperature (120 °C) was required for strong adhesion. Oxidation of the cellulose membranes to introduce surface carboxyl/aldehyde groups increased the wet delamination strength by 60%, implying that the peel failures happened at the protein/cellulose interface. The wet delamination force was independent of the pH and ionic strength of solutions used to apply the BSA; whereas adhesion decreased with increasing pH of the rewetting solution. Furthermore, the swelling of the BSA interplay region was also increased at high pH. It is proposed that covalent grafting of BSA onto the oxidized cellulose, and disulfide crosslinking within the protein layer contributed to wet adhesion.  相似文献

Layer-by-layer deposition of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC) and chitosan (CHI) was used to create polyelectrolyte multilayers on ellipsoidal beta-FeOOH particles at low ionic strength. Using electro-optics, we investigated the formation of films in dependence on the polyelectrolyte charge density by controlling pH of the dipping solutions. We found out a linear growth of the CMC/CHI films when they are constructed from highly charged CHI (at pH 4.0) and weakly charged NaCMC (at pH 4.0 and 5.5). The hydrodynamic thickness of the film constructed at pH 4.0/4.0 is unusually large for a linearly growing film (ca. 220 nm after deposition of 8 bilayers), but it strongly decreases (ca. 4 times) with increasing ionization of NaCMC (at pH 5.5). In both cases, the multilayer buildup proceeded through a series of adsorption-desorption steps. This was explained by a partial loss of CHI from the film surface on exposure to the solution of longer NaCMC molecules. The irregular film growth correlated quite well with the variations in the electrical polarizability of the polymer-coated particles. This correlation enabled us to conclude that the adsorption of both polymers occurs only on the film surface, with no diffusion in and out of the film bulk during deposition of each CMC/CHI bilayer.  相似文献

The adsorption and viscoelastic properties of cationic xylan layers adsorbed from an aqueous electrolyte solution (NaCl 0, 1, 10, 100 mM) on a cellulose model surface were studied using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). Three cationic xylans with different charge densities were used (molecular weight, 9,600 g/mol with degrees of substitution, DS = 0.150, 0.191, and 0.259). The influences of the electrolyte concentration and charge density of cationic xylan on its adsorption onto a cellulose surface were investigated. Low charged cationic xylan was substantially more efficient in surface adsorption on cellulose compared to high charged cationic xylan at a low concentration of electrolytes. Adsorption of low charged cationic xylan decreased with increases in electrolyte concentration. However, adsorption of high cationic xylan increased with electrolyte concentration. The conformation and viscoelastic properties of the layers were interpreted by modeling the data under the assumption that the layers can be explained by the a Voigt model. Low charged cationic xylan adsorbed relatively weakly onto the cellulose surface, and formed a thicker, softer layer than high charged cationic xylan. On the other hand, high charged cationic xylan formed a thinner adsorption layer onto the cellulose surface.  相似文献

The regularities of adsorption of a cationic polyelectrolyte, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), on the surface of fused quartz are studied at different values of solution pH by capillary electrokinetics. It is shown that the polyelectrolyte adsorption on a negatively charged surface depends on the value of the surface charge and increases with its growth. At a low charge value (pH 3.8), the polyelectrolyte adsorption increases the quartz surface charge. The driving forces of the adsorption are both electrostatic interaction and forces of nonelectrostatic nature, probably hydrophobic interactions and a change in entropy due to the displacement of counterions from a double layer. The adsorption of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) on quartz from alkaline and neutral solutions is irreversible, which indicates the key role of the electrostatic interaction. At low values of the surface charge, the nonelectrostatic interactions play the main role, thereby resulting in polyelectrolyte desorption.  相似文献

A series of studies on microgel thin films is described, wherein quartz crystal microgravimetry (QCM), surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been used to probe the properties of microstructured polymer thin films as a function of film architecture and solution pH. Thin films composed of pNIPAm-co-AAc microgels were constructed by using spin-coating layer-by-layer (scLbL) assembly with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) as a polycationic "glue". Our findings suggest that the interaction between the negatively charged microgels and the positively charged PAH has a significant impact on the pH responsivity of the film. These effects are observable in both the optical and mechanical behaviors of the films. The most significant changes in behavior are observed when the motional resistance of a quartz oscillator is monitored via QCM experiments. Slight changes to the film architecture and alternating the pH of the environment significantly changes the QCM and SPR responses, suggesting a pH-dependent swelling that is dependent on both particle swelling and polyelectrolyte de-complexation. Together, these studies allow for a deeper understanding of the morphological changes that take place in environmentally responsive microgel-based thin films.  相似文献

Two combinations of sodium poly(4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) of different chain length and charge density are employed to construct multilayer films. The polyelectrolytes are assembled layer-by-layer on colloidal particles in the absence of salt. We have investigated the formation and electrical characteristics of the films by using electric light scattering technique. The results show that the film thickness is independent of the chain length when fully charged PAH (at pH 4.6) is combined with fully charged PSS. When the films are prepared with less charged PAH (at pH 6.7) and fully charged PSS, lower thickness is found for the film with shorter polymer chains. In all cases, the thickness increment realized on addition of the polymer with lower molar concentration is partially lost on exposure to the solution with higher concentration of the oppositely charged partner. When the film growth is regular (at equal molar concentrations of the fully charged polyelectrolytes), the ratio of PSS to PAH charge, estimated from the electro-optical effect values, exceeds 1. The electro-optical effect is also higher for the films ending with PSS when fully charged PSS is combined with less charged PAH (at pH 6.7). This reveals the key role of the charge in the last-adsorbed layer for the electro-optical behavior of the whole film.  相似文献

The research reported in this paper demonstrates that the capacity of cotton fibres to adsorb cationic surfactants as well as the rate of the adsorption process can be increased by adsorbing carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) onto the fibre surfaces; in addition, the adsorption can be restricted to the fibre surface. CMC was deposited by means of adsorption from an aqueous solution. The adsorption of N-cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) from an aqueous solution onto the CMC-modified fibres was measured using UV-spectrometric determination of the surfactant concentration in the solution. Adsorption onto the cotton fibres was studied in a weakly basic environment (pH 8.5) where cotton fibres are negatively charged and the CPC ion is positively charged. Modification of the fibres by adsorption of CMC introduces new carboxyl groups onto the fibre surfaces, thereby increasing the adsorption capacity of the fibres for CPC. The initial rate of adsorption of CPC increased proportionally with the amount of charge; however, this rate slowed down at high degrees of coverage on fibres with a high charge. The adsorption of cationic surfactant to the anionic surface groups was stoichiometric, with no indication of multilayer or admicelle formation. It was evident that the acidic group content of the fibres was the primary factor determining cationic surfactant adsorption to these fibres.  相似文献

Interactions between preadsorbed films of poly(vinyl amine) (PVA) of two different line charge densities on silica substrates were studied with the colloidal probe technique based on the atomic force microscope (AFM). The preadsorbed films were prepared by adsorption of PVA from a pH 4 solution without any added salt. The highly charged PVA adsorbs in a flat configuration and in laterally heterogeneous layers, while the more weakly charged PVA analog adsorbs in thicker and more homogeneous films. As revealed by reflectivity measurements, such preadsorbed PVA films are stable in polyelectrolyte-free solutions. However, force measurements with the colloidal probe reveal that their interactions depend strongly on the ionic strength. Upon approach, interactions are dominated by electrostatic diffuse layer overlap forces. Both PVA films have very similar diffuse layer charge densities of about 1.5 mC/m2. Since these values are substantially lower than what would be expected from the total charge of the adsorbed polyelectrolytes measured by reflectivity, we infer that coadsorption of anions represents the principal mechanism in charge neutralization. Upon retraction, the adhesion between the films is dominated by bridging forces due to single polymer chains. Such bridging adhesion becomes progressively important with increasing ionic strength, whereby their range and frequency increase. The work of adhesion due to bridging is about 0.3 mN/m. At low ionic strengths, the films behave differently. While the highly charged PVA shows unspecific adhesion at small distances, the more weakly charged PVA analog shows few adhesion events occurring at long distances.  相似文献

The interactions between nonpolar surfaces coated with the nonionic surfactant hexaoxyethylene dodecyl ether C12E6 were investigated using two techniques and three different types of surfaces. As nonpolar surfaces, the air/water interface, silanated negatively charged glass, and thiolated uncharged gold surfaces were chosen. The interactions between the air/water interfaces were measured with a thin film pressure balance in terms of disjoining pressure as a function of film thickness. The interactions between the solid/liquid interfaces were determined using a bimorph surface force apparatus. The influence of the nature of the surface on the interaction forces was investigated at surfactant concentrations below and above the cmc. The adsorption of the nonionic surfactant on the uncharged thiolated surface does not, as expected, lead to any buildup of a surface charge. On the other hand, adsorption of C12E6 on the charged silanated glass and the charged air/water interface results in a lowering of the surface charge density. The reduction of the surface charge density on the silanated glass surfaces is rationalized by changes in the dielectric permittivity around the charged silanol groups. The reason for the surface charge observed at the air/water interface as well as its decrease with increasing surfactant concentration is discussed and a new mechanism for generation of OH- ions at this particular interface is proposed.  相似文献
