Elastic properties of honeycomb sandwich plates with nontraditional cell forms

A method for correcting the elastic properties of honeycomb sandwich plates by changing the cell shape is described. Compact and convenient analytical expressions (1) are proposed for calculating the reduced elastic parameters of the honeycomb sandwich plates. The acceptable range of changes in the size of the honeycombs is restricted by the cell elongation region [0.5;2] and the region of variation of the angle between cell walls [/6; 5/6]. Simultaneous approximation of algebraic irrationalities

This paper proves three theorems concerning the simultaneous approximation of numbers from a totally real algebraic number field. It is shown that for two given numbers ₁ and ₂ from a totally real algebraic number field, the constant ₁₂ can be explicitly calculated, this being the upper limit of the numbers c₁₂ such that the inequality max (q₁, q₂)(qc₁₂)^–1/2 holds for infinitely many natural numbers q; likewise for the constant a₁₂ such that the inequality q₁·q₂< a₁₂(q^logq) holds for infinitely many natural numbers q. Estimate of the modulus of continuity of the generalized solutions of certain singular parabolic equations

One considers singular parabolic equations of the form (u)/t–u0,where sign u is a multivalued function, equal to -I for u<0, to 1 for u>0, and to the segment [-I,I] for u=0. Such a class of equations contains, in particular, the model for the two-phase Stefan problem, the porous medium equation, and the plasma equation. Certain nonlocal problems for two-dimensional equations of motion of Oldroyd fluids

The solvability of a boundary-value problem on the semi-axis t0 is studied for two-dimensional equations of motion of Oldroyd fluids (1), and with trivial problem data a proof is given of the existence of a solution which is periodic with respect to t and has the period . Best approximation and best unilateral approximation of the kernel of a biharmonic equation and optimal renewal of the values of operators

For the classB _p , 0 < 1, 1p , of 2-periodic functions of the form f(t)=u(,t), whereu (,t) is a biharmonic function in the unit disk, we obtain the exact values of the best approximation and best unilateral approximation of the kernel K(t) of the convolution f= K *g, gl, with respect to the metric of L₁. Limitations of the L-curve method in ill-posed problems

This paper considers the Tikhonov regularization method with the regularization parameter chosen by the so-called L-curve criterion. An infinite dimensional example is constructed for which the selected regularization parameter vanishes too rapidly as the noise to signal ratio in the data goes to zero. As a consequence the computed reconstructions do not converge to the true solution. Numerical examples are given to show that similar phenomena can be observed under more general assumptions in discrete ill-posed problems provided the exact solution of the problem is smooth.This work was partially supported by NATO grant CRG 930044.

A new two-scale expansion is proposed for eigenfunctions of bouncing-ball type and the corresponding eigenvalues of the Laplace operator with the Dirichlet condition in a domain of the plane. Subgroups of the general symplectic group containing the group of diagonal matrices

There are described the subgroups of the general symplectic group =GSp(2n, R) over a commutative semilocal ring R, containing the group of symplectic diagonal matrices. For each such subgroup P there is uniquely defined a symplectic D-net a such that ()pN(), where () is the net subgroup in corresponding to (cf. RZhMat, 1977, 5A288), and N() is its normalizer. The quotient group N × ()/() is calculated. There are also considered subgroups in Sp(2n, R). The likelihood ratio for densities with singularities

Let t_n be the Bayesian estimator of the parameter constructed from independent observations in the case of infinite information and probability distribution density with some singularities. Nonnegative Hall Polynomials

The number of subgroups of type and cotype in a finite abelian p-group of type is a polynomialg with integral coefficients. We prove g has nonnegative coefficients for all partitions and if and only if no two parts of differ by more than one. Necessity follows from a few simple facts about Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions; sufficiency relies on properties of certain order-preserving surjections that associate to each subgroup a vector dominated componentwise by . The nonzero components of (H) are the parts of , the type of H; if no two parts of differ by more than one, the nonzero components of – (H) are the parts of , the cotype of H. In fact, we provide an order-theoretic characterization of those isomorphism types of finite abelian p-groups all of whose Hall polynomials have nonnegative coefficients.
