We present a density functional theory study on the magnetic properties of two-dimensional surface alloys of the type MxN1−x (M=Fe, Co and Ni; N=Pt, Au, Ag, Cd and Pb) on Rh(1 1 1) for x=0.0, 0.25, 0.33, 0.5, 0.67, 0.75 and 1.0, in two types of geometric arrangements—striped phases or linear-chain type, and non-striped phases or mixed checkerboard type. Many pairs among these are bulk-immiscible but show mixing on the surface. We find that the trend in the magnetic moment of surface alloys of N with a given M follows the number of valence electrons in N: the higher the number of valence electrons, the lower the magnetic moment. Overlayer atoms when put on hcp sites show higher moment compared to fcc sites. In general, for a given composition x, linear-chain type structures show a reduced magnetic moment compared to checkerboard type structures. We find that Pb, when alloyed with magnetic elements (Fe, Co and Ni), has a lowering effect on their magnetic moments.  相似文献

The effect of Fe substitution for the vacant site in half-Heusler alloy CoCrAl is studied. A series of single phase CoFexCrAl (x=0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0) alloys has been successfully synthesized. The lattice constant is found to increase almost linearly with increasing Fe content, indicating Fe atoms enter the lattice of CoCrAl instead of existing as a secondary phase. When Fe entering the vacant site, spin polarization occurs and the alloy turns from a semimetal in CoCrAl to a half-metallic ferromagnet (HMF) in CoFeCrAl. This is due to the reconstruction of the energy band with Fe substitution. The Curie temperature and saturation magnetic moments are enhanced and increase monotonically with increasing Fe content. The variation of the spin moment follows the Slater-Pauling curve and agrees with the theoretical calculation as well.  相似文献

The electronic structures and magnetic properties of double perovskites Sr2Fe1−xCrxReO6 (x=0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0) have been studied within the local spin density approximation (LSDA) and LSDA+U schemes. The calculated results reveal that with increasing Cr content the cell volume shrinks 2.61%; the Fe/Cr site magnetic moment decreases while the Re-site moment increases. The total spin magnetic moment linearly decreases with the Cr doping from 3.00μB for x=0.00 down to 1.00μB for x=1.00 per formula unit. The magnetic coupling constants increase with increasing x. The electronic structure calculations indicate that the electronic concentration in the Re spin-down subband slightly increases resulting from the increase of bonding-antibonding interaction between the localised and the delocalised states in spin-down band; the coupling of O-2p and transition-metal-3d is substantially enhanced with the Cr doping. We discuss the origin of the anomalously high TC of Cr-doped Sr2FeReO6 compounds in terms of band hybridization effects.  相似文献

We have investigated the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) Cd1−xMnxTe (for x=0.75 and 1.0) in the zinc blende (B3) phase by employing the ab-initio method. Calculations were performed by using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave plus local orbitals (FP-L/APW+lo) method within the frame work of spin-polarized density functional theory (SP-DFT). The electronic exchange-correlation energy is described by generalized gradient approximation (GGA). We have calculated the lattice parameters, bulk modulii and the first pressure derivatives of the bulk modulii, spin-polarized band structures, and total and local densities of states. We estimated the spin-exchange splitting energies Δx(d) and Δx(pd) produced by the Mn3d states, and we found that the effective potential for the minority spin is more attractive than that of the majority spin. We determine the s-d exchange constant N0α (conduction band) and p-d exchange constant N0β (valence band) and these somewhat agree with a typical magneto-optical experiment. The value of calculated magnetic moment per Mn impurity atom is found to be 4.08 μB for Cd0.25Mn0.75Te and 4.09 μB for Cd0.0Mn1.0Te. Moreover, we found that p-d hybridization reduces the local magnetic moment of Mn from its free space charge value of 5.0 μB and produces small local magnetic moments on the nonmagnetic Cd and Te sites.  相似文献

The electronic structures of Co-based Heusler compounds CoTiAl1−xSix (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1) are calculated by first-principles using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method within GGA and LSDA+U scheme. Particular emphasis was put on the role of the main group elements. In recent years, the GGA calculations of Co2TiAl (x=0) and Co2TiSi (x=1) indicated that they are half-metallic, but the electronic structure of this compound with x=0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 has not been reported yet, neither theoretically nor experimentally. The calculated results reveal that these are half-metallic and exhibit an energy gap in the minority spin state and also show 100% spin polarization. The substitution of Al by Si leads to an increase in the number of valence electrons, with increasing x. Our calculated results clearly show that with the Si doping, the lattice parameter linearly decreases; bulk modulus increases, and the total magnetic moment increases. The calculated energy gap in the minority spin state, using GGA scheme, was smaller than that obtained by using LSDA+U scheme. The outcomes of this research also show that the Co-3d DOS and therefore, the magnetic properties of compounds are dependent on electron concentration of the main group elements and it will affect the degree of p-d orbital occupation.  相似文献

Density functional theory calculations by using both generalized gradient approximation (GGA) method and the GGA with considering strong correlation effect (GGA+U) for various Eu concentrations x (=0.00, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75). It is found that after the Europium incorporation, a new localized band appears between the valence and conduction bands, which corresponds to the majority spin of Eu-4f states, the strong correlation effects is very important for the 4f orbit of the Eu atom in ZnEuS. We find that Zn1−xEuxS exhibits a half-metallic characteristic, and the ferromagnetic state is more favorable in energy than the antiferromagnetic state. Structural properties are determined from the total energy calculations, and we discuss the electronic structures, total and partial densities of states and local moments.  相似文献

First-principles calculations based on the density functional theory are performed to study the structural properties, spin-polarized electronic band structures, density of states and magnetic properties of the zinc blende In1− x Mn x Sb (x = 0.125, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.0). The calculated lattice constants of In1− x Mn x Sb obey the Vegard’s law with a marginal upward bowing. With the increase of Mn concentration in In1− x Mn x Sb, a transition from the semi-metallic to the half-metallic behavior happens such that the majority-spin valence states crosses the Fermi level and the minority-spin states have a gap at the Fermi level. A large exchange splitting (∼ 4 eV) is observed between Mn 3d states of the majority-spins and the minority-spins. The total magnetic moment of In1− x Mn x Sb half-metallic ferromagnets per Mn atom basis is 4μ B. The total magnetic moment per Mn atom indicate that Mn atoms act as acceptors in InSb and contribute to holes in the lattice of InSb. Due to p-d hybridization, the free space charge of Mn reduces that results a loss in its magnetic moment. The loss in the magnetic moment of the Mn atoms is converted into a small local magnetic moments on the In and Sb sites.  相似文献

The structural and electronic properties of cubic GaN x As1−x with N-concentration varying between 0.0 and 1.0 with step of 0.25 were investigated using the full potential–linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method. We have used the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange and correlation potential. In addition the Engel-Vosko generalized gradient approximation (EVGGA) was used for the band-structure calculations. The structural properties of the binary and ternary alloys were investigated. The electronic band structure, total and partial density of states as well as the electron charge density were determined for both the binary and their related ternary alloys. The energy gap of the alloys decreases when we move from x=0.0 to 0.25; then it increases by a factor of about 1.8 when we move from 0.25 to 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 using EVGGA. For both LDA and GGA moving from x=0.0 to 0.25 causes the band gap to close, showing the metallic nature of the GaN0.25As0.75 alloy. When the composition of N moves through x=0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1, the band gap increases.  相似文献

The effect of doping with Cr on the electronic structure and magnetism of Co3Al has been studied by density functional calculations. It has been found that the Cr atom has a strong site preference for the B-site in Co3Al. With the substitution of Cr for Co, the total densities of states (DOS) change obviously: A DOS peak appears at EF in the majority spin states and an energy gap is opened in the minority spin states. The effect of Cr in Co3Al is mainly to push the antibonding peak of the Co (A,C) atoms high on the energy scale and to form the energy gap around EF, and also to contribute to the large DOS peak at EF in the majority spin direction. The calculations indicate a ferromagnetic alignment between the Co and Cr spin moments. The calculated total magnetic moment decreases and becomes closer to the Slater–Pauling curve with increasing Cr content. This is mainly due to the decrease of the Co (A,C) spin moments. At the same time, the moments of Co (B) and Cr (B) only change slightly.  相似文献

The electronic structure of the highly ordered alloy Cr3Co with the DO3 structure has been studied by FLAPW calculations. It is found that the ferrimagnetic state is stable and that the equilibrium lattice constant of Cr3Co equals 5.77 Å. A large peak in majority spin density of states (DOS) and an energy gap in minority spin DOS are observed at the Fermi level, which results in a high spin polarization of 90% in the ordered alloy Cr3Co. The total magnetic moment of Cr3Co is 3.12μB, which is close to the ideal value of 3μB derived from the Slater-Pauling curve. An antiparallel alignment between the moments on the Cr (A, C) sites and the Cr (B) sites is observed. Finally, the effect of lattice distortion on the electronic structure and on magnetic properties of Cr3Co compound is studied. A spin polarization higher than 80% can be obtained between 5.55 and 5.90 Å. With increasing lattice constant, the magnetic moments on the (A, C) sites increase and the moments on the (B, D) sites decrease. They compensate each other and make the total magnetic moment change only slightly.  相似文献

Quaternary Heusler alloys Fe1.5M0.5CoSi with M=V, Cr, Mn and Fe have been investigated theoretically and experimentally. All of these samples crystallize in the ordered Heusler-type structure. The calculated electronic structure shows a pseudogap around EF in the minority spin states of Fe2CoSi. With the substitution of low-valent atoms for Fe, the majority antibonding peak is shifted to higher energy and a minority gap around the Fermi level is opened. High spin polarization ratio is obtained in Fe1.5M0.5CoSi (M=V, Cr, Mn) alloys. The calculated total spin moments decrease with decreasing number of valence electrons and follow the Slater-Pauling curve, which agree with the experimental results well. The Curie temperature decreases as M atom varies from Fe to V, but is always higher than 650 K, which is suitable for technical applications.  相似文献

Numerical calculations of the thermopower component S d that is associated with the fine structure of the density of d states near the Fermi level are carried out for CeNi5 and its La analog. The estimates, together with earlier experimental data on the transport coefficients in Ce(M xNi1?x )5 solid solutions with M=Ga, Cu (0≤x≤0.4)), are used to analyze the behavior of the thermopower component S f originating from the Ce valence instability. It is shown that as Ce crosses over from the state of its usual intermediate valence to the saturated-valence state, the feature near the Fermi energy, which represents a Lorentzian-shaped peak of the density of f states, transforms to a double-humped structure. The possibility of formation of a strongly correlated band of f states in Ce(M xNi1?x )5 in the crossover to the Ce saturated-valence state, accompanied by the opening of a quasi-gap Δ ~ 400 K, is discussed.  相似文献

Using the first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, we investigate the more d-electrons doping effects on the electronic structure and magnetism of the parent inverse Heusler alloy Ti2CoAl by the substitution of Nb and V atoms for Ti(A) and Ti(B) atoms locating at the two inequivalent sublattices. The Ti2CoAl is half-metallic with Fermi level near the top of the minority-spin valence band and hence its spin-polarization is easily reduced by the spin-flip excitation. Our total energy calculations show that the V/Nb doping at the Ti(A)/Ti(B) site is energetically favorable compared with the Ti(B)/T(A) site due to the lower total energy. Our band structure calculations indicate that for the V doped compounds, half-metallicity can be well retained regardless of doping sites and percentages except for the case of Ti(A)-site doping with x = 1, while for Nb doped compounds, the half-metallicity persists only in Ti(B)-site doping with different percentages. For the doped compounds with half-metallicity, the Fermi level shifts from the top of minority-spin valence band to the bottom of minority-spin conduction band with increasing content of x, and typically, the doped compounds (V in Ti(A) and Ti(B) sites at x = 0.75 and 0.5, respectively; Nb in Ti(B) site at x = 0.5), whose Fermi levels are adjusted to the expected positions to effectively inhibit the spin-flip excitation are promising candidates for spintronics applications.  相似文献

We performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of Fe2MnSi1−xGex alloys (x=0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00). The lattice constant is found to increase linearly as a function of Ge concentration with a decrease in the formation energy. The total magnetic moment is found to be 3 μB for all alloys with the most contribution from Mn local magnetic moments. Iron atoms, however, exhibit much smaller spin moments about 10% of the bulk value. It seems that due to the proximity of Fe, magnetic moments have been induced on the sp atoms, which couple antiferromagnetically with Fe and Mn spin moments. Although, the band gap remains almost constant (0.5 eV), the spin–flip gap decreases as a function of x.  相似文献

Ferromagnetic half metallicity with a high spin polarization of 100% was predicted in the bulk Ni0.5Cu0.5O using density-functional theory method. The band gap of majority spin is 3.45 eV for Ni0.5Cu0.5O. The density of states of minority spin at the Fermi level are mainly from Cu 3d and O 2p in the Ni0.5Cu0.5O. The magnetic moments are from Ni 3d states. Ni0.5Zn0.5O and Ni0.5Cd0.5O systems are ferromagnetic insulators, but the magnetic moment of Ni2+ ions is enhanced by the Zn and Cd incorporation. Therefore, Ni0.5Cu0.5O is the potential candidate for spintronics devices because of the predicted high spin polarization.  相似文献

The critical fields of the valence transition induced by a magnetic field in the EuNi2(Si1?x Gex)2 (x=0.5–0.75) compound in an intermediate valence state are measured. The magnetic-field-induced valence transition is observed in the low-concentration range down to x=0.5. It is demonstrated that the critical field increases linearly with a decrease in the germanium concentration.  相似文献

The structural and magnetic properties of Mn-substituted lithium ferrites having the general formula Li0.5−0.5xMnxFe2.5−0.5xO4 (where x=0.0–1.0) prepared by the standard ceramic technique have been studied. Single phase cubic structure is confirmed by X-ray diffractometer. This result demonstrates that the samples are homogeneous, and the sharp peaks reveal that the samples are in crystalline form. The lattice parameter ‘a’ and average grain diameter ‘D’ increase with increasing Mn2+ ion substitution. The saturation magnetization and the experimental magnetic moment are found to increase with manganese up to x=0.5 and then tends to decrease for x>0.5. The increase in magnetic moment with manganese is attributed to Neel's two sublattice model according to which the magnetic moment is the vector sum of lattice magnetic moment. The decrease in magnetization for x>0.5 obeys the Yafet–Kittel (Y–K) model. The increase in Y–K angles for x≥0.5 indicates the increased favor for triangle spin arrangements on B-sites. This suggests the existence of canted spin structure in the ferrite system with higher content of Mn. Hystersis loops were measured. The initial permeability μi was measured as a function of temperature.  相似文献

The real-space recursion method and unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation have been applied to calculate the density of states of various Co perovskite, CeCoO3, SrCoO3 and Sr1−xCexCoO3. We have studied the magnetically ordered states of these Co perovskites in an enlarged double cell, and find its various magnetic structures due to the occupancy of 3d band and its interaction with neighboring Co ions. In this study, we have studied the p-d hybridization of the three Co perovskites, we find t2g electrons are localized and the flat eg band is responsible for the itinerant behavior, and although the rare earth elements itself contribute little to the DOS at the Fermi energy, the DOS at Fermi energy and the magnetic moment changed consequently because of different valence of Co ions in these compounds and p-d hybridization effect is very important.  相似文献

We have synthesized the perovskite oxides of the (Ba0.3Sr0.2La0.5)(In1−xFex)O3−δ system and measured the total electrical conductivity as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure. It was found that the single-phase composition region extended from x = 0.0 to x = 1.0, and that the Fe valence increased from 3.06 to 3.50 in that region. The electrical conductivity was semiconducting from x = 0.0 to x = 0.40 and metallic from x = 0.50 to x = 1.0. The total electrical conductivity at 800 °C also increased with the Fe content and achieved a maximum value of 140 (S/cm) at x = 1.0. From the dependence of the electrical conductivity on the oxygen partial pressure, we conclude that above x = 0.50, the majority carriers are holes. The estimated hole conductivity increased exponentially with the amount of Fe4+ cation present. The oxide ion conductivity was dependent on the oxygen vacancy content.  相似文献
