We report the energy relaxation of the OH stretch vibration of HDO molecules contained in an HDO:D(2)O water bridge using femtosecond mid-infrared pump-probe spectroscopy. We found that the vibrational lifetime is shorter (~630 ± 50 fs) than for HDO molecules in bulk HDO:D(2)O (~740 ± 40 fs). In contrast, the thermalization dynamics following the vibrational relaxation are much slower (~1.5 ± 0.4 ps) than in bulk HDO:D(2)O (~250 ± 90 fs). These differences in energy relaxation dynamics strongly indicate that the water bridge and bulk water differ on a molecular scale.  相似文献

The molecular reorientation of liquid water is key to the hydration and stabilization of molecules and ions in aqueous solution. A powerful technique to study this reorientation is to measure the time-dependent anisotropy of the excitation of the O-H/O-D stretch vibration of HDO dissolved in D2O/H2O using femtosecond midinfrared laser pulses. In this paper, we present and discuss experiments in which this technique is used to study the correlation between the molecular reorientation of the water molecules and the strength of the hydrogen-bond interactions. On short time scales (<200 fs), it was found that the anisotropy shows a partial decay due to librational motions of the water molecules that keep the hydrogen bond intact. On longer time scale (>200 fs), the anisotropy shows a complete decay with an average time constant of 2.5 ps. From the frequency dependence of the anisotropy dynamics, it follows that a subensemble of the water molecules shows a fast reorientation that is accompanied by a large change of the vibrational frequency. This finding agrees with the molecular jumping mechanism for the reorientation of liquid water that has recently been proposed by Laage and Hynes.  相似文献

We use mid-infrared pump-probe spectroscopy to study the ultrafast dynamics of HDO molecules in mixtures of tetramethylurea (TMU) and water. The composition of the studied solutions ranges from pure water to an equimolar mixture of water and TMU. We find that the vibrational relaxation of the OD-stretching vibration of HDO proceeds via an intermediate level in which the molecule is more strongly hydrogen bonded than in the ground state. As the TMU concentration is increased, the lifetime of the excited state and of the intermediate increase from 1.8 to 5.2 ps and from 0.7 to 2.2 ps, respectively. The orientational relaxation data indicate that the solutions contain two types of water molecules: bulk-like molecules that have the same reorientation time constant as in the pure liquid (taurot = 2.5 ps) and molecules that are strongly immobilized (taurot > 10 ps). The immobilized water molecules turn out to be involved in the solvation of the methyl groups of the tetramethylurea molecule. The fraction of immobilized water molecules grows with increasing TMU concentration, reaching a limiting value of 60% at very high concentrations.  相似文献

We studied the orientational relaxation of the OD-stretch vibration of HDO molecules in concentrated solutions of alkali-halide salts (NaCl, NaI, CsCl and KI) in isotopically diluted water (4% D(2)O in H(2)O), using polarization-resolved femtosecond infrared pump-probe spectroscopy (fs-IR). We were able to distinguish the orientational dynamics of the water molecules solvating the halide ions from the dynamics of the bulk water and the water solvating the cations. We found that the reorientation of the halide-bound molecules shows two strongly different components (2.0 ± 0.3 ps and 9 ± 1 ps), related to a wiggling motion of the OD group hydrogen-bonded to the anion, and rotational diffusion of the molecule over the charged anion surface, respectively. The relative amplitudes of the two components are dependent on the nature of both the anion and cation, and on the concentration. These results show that cations can have a profound effect on the solvation shell dynamics of their counter-ions.

Dynamical properties, librational and vibrational motions of water molecules in the first and second hydration shells of the Fe(II) and Fe(III) ion were evaluated by means of velocity autocorrelation functions obtained by combined quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical molecular dynamics (QM/MM-MD) simulations. The frequencies of rotation around three principal axes and the frequencies of intramolecular vibration of the water molecules in the first hydration shells obtained from the simulations are blue-shifted for both ions compared to those observed experimentally for liquid water. The intramolecular geometry of water molecules in the quantum mechanically treated region (ion plus first hydration shell) shows shorter O–H bonds and wider H–O–H angles than the bulk solvent.  相似文献

We report vibrational lifetime measurements of the OH stretch vibration of interfacial water in contact with lipid monolayers, using time-resolved vibrational sum frequency (VSF) spectroscopy. The dynamics of water in contact with four different lipids are reported and are characterized by vibrational relaxation rates measured at 3200, 3300, 3400, and 3500 cm(-1). We observe that the water molecules with an OH frequency ranging from 3300 to 3500 cm(-1) all show vibrational relaxation with a time constant of T(1) = 180 ± 35 fs, similar to what is found for bulk water. Water molecules with OH groups near 3200 cm(-1) show distinctly faster relaxation dynamics, with T(1) < 80 fs. We successfully model the data by describing the interfacial water containing two distinct subensembles in which spectral diffusion is, respectively, rapid (3300-3500 cm(-1)) and absent (3200 cm(-1)). We discuss the potential biological implications of the presence of the strongly hydrogen-bonded, rapidly relaxing water molecules at 3200 cm(-1) that are decoupled from the bulk water system.  相似文献

Although many vibrational spectroscopic studies using infrared (IR) absorption and Raman scattering (RS) techniques revealed that dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) forms intermolecular dimeric associations in the pure liquid state and in solutions, the results of a number of dielectric relaxation studies did not clearly show the presence of such dimers. Recently, we found the presence of dimeric DMSO associations in not only the pure liquid but also in solutions of nonpolar solvents, such as tetrachloromethane (CCl(4)) and benzene (Bz), using dielectric relaxation (DR) techniques, which ranged from 50 MHz to 50 GHz at 25 °C. The dimeric DMSO associations cause a slow dielectric relaxation process with a relaxation time of ca. 23 ps for solutions in CCl(4) (ca. 17 ps in Bz) due to the dissociation into monomeric DMSO molecules, while the other fast relaxation is caused by monomeric DMSO molecules with a relaxation time of ca. 5.0 ps (ca. 5.5 ps in Bz) at 25 °C. A comparison of DR and vibrational spectroscopic data for DMSO solutions demonstrated that the concentration dependence of the relative magnitude of the slow and fast DR strength corresponds well to the two IR and RS bands assigned to the vibrational stretching modes of the sulfoxide groups (S═O) of the dimeric associations and the monomeric DMSO molecules, respectively. Moreover, the concentrations of the dimeric associations ([DIM]) and monomeric DMSO molecules ([MON]) were governed by a chemical equilibrium and an equilibrium constant (K(d) = [DIM](2)[MON](-1)) that was markedly dependent on the concentration of DMSO and the solvent species (K(d) = 2.5 ± 0.5 M(-1) and 0.7 ± 0.1 M(-1) in dilute CCl(4) and Bz solutions, respectively, and dramatically increased to 20-40 M(-1) in pure DMSO at 25 °C).  相似文献

Classical molecular dynamics (MD) and combined quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) MD simulations have been performed to investigate the structural and dynamical properties of the Tl(III) ion in water. A six-coordinate hydration structure with a maximum probability of the Tl-O distance at 2.21 A was observed, which is in good agreement with X-ray data. The librational and vibrational spectra of water molecules in the first hydration shell are blue-shifted compared with those of pure liquid water, and the Tl-O stretching force constant was evaluated as 148 Nm(-1). Both structural and dynamical properties show a distortion of the first solvation shell structure. The second shell ligands' mean residence time was determined as 12.8 ps. The Tl(III) ion can be classified as "structure forming" ion; the calculated hydration energy of -986 +/- 9 kcal mol agrees well with the experimental value of -986 kcal mol.  相似文献

The dielectric constant of aqueous MgCl2 solution has been determined in the frequency range 0.2 MHz to 20 GHz at 298 K using the dielectric relaxation spectroscopy method. The behavior is well described according to four Cole-Cole terms whose evolution with composition is analyzed. The static dielectric constant and relaxation times decreases with the increasing aqueous MgCl2 solution concentrations. Only one H-bonded water cluster with the aqueous MgCl2 solution relaxes is reported during the cutoff relaxation time. A distinct ion–water cooperative interaction is observed, and water molecules perturbed by ion contribution on dielectric constant beyond the first hydration shell are obtained.  相似文献

The ultrafast vibrational dynamics of HDO:D(2)O ice at 180 K in anionic reverse micelles is studied by midinfrared femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. Solutions containing reverse micelles are cooled to low temperatures by a fast-freezing procedure. The heating dynamics of the micellar solutions is studied to characterize the micellar structure. Small reverse micelles with a water content up to approximately 150 water molecules contain an amorphous form of ice that shows remarkably different vibrational dynamics compared to bulk hexagonal ice. The micellar amorphous ice has a much longer vibrational lifetime than bulk hexagonal ice and micellar liquid water. The vibrational lifetime is observed to increase linearly from 0.7 to 4 ps with the resonance frequency ranging from 3100 to 3500 cm(-1). From the pump dependence of the vibrational relaxation the homogeneous linewidth of the amorphous ice is determined (55+/-5 cm(-1)).  相似文献

The aqueous NaHSO4 and Na2SO4 solutions at concentrations of 0.1–1.0 mol/l in a limited frequency range 0.2–20 GHz are studied by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy with a newly developed fractal concept spectral function. The fractal analysis with α(lnτ) diagrams from dielectric relaxation spectroscopy as functions proposed a new strategy to shed light on the dual nature of ion–water and dipole–water cooperative interactions. A distinct cooperative interaction of ion–water and dipole–water is observed and water molecules perturbed by ions contributing to dielectric constant beyond the first hydration shell is obtained.  相似文献

The hydration state and dynamics of plain and chemically modified cyclodextrins (CDs) in aqueous solution were investigated by using dielectric relaxation measurements at 25 degrees C over a wide frequency range up to 20 GHz, which is the relaxation frequency of pure liquid water molecules. The obtained dielectric relaxation spectra were decomposed into two major and one minor relaxation modes with relaxation times of approximately 8.3, 20-25, and 1000-2500 ps, respectively, depending on the CD species. The two major modes, fast and medium, were attributed to a rotational relaxation process of water molecules belonging to the bulk (free) state and an exchange of water molecules hydrated to CDs owing to hydrogen bond formation. The hydration numbers of the CDs strongly depend on the number of hydroxy (OH) groups controlled by chemical modification such as methylation. Increasing the number of methoxy or 2-hydroxypropoxy groups increases the hydration number of CD molecules, and results in higher solubilities of the chemically modified CDs than those of the plain CDs. The minor, slow mode was assigned to overall rotational relaxation for CDs with finite permanent dipole moments, which also depends on the number of OH groups.  相似文献

We study the spectral and orientational dynamics of HDO molecules in solutions of tertiary-butyl-alcohol (TBA), trimethyl-amine-oxide (TMAO), and tetramethylurea (TMU) in isotopically diluted water (HDO:D(2)O and HDO:H(2)O). The spectral dynamics are studied with femtosecond two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy and the orientational dynamics with femtosecond polarization-resolved vibrational pump-probe spectroscopy. We observe a strong slowing down of the spectral diffusion around the central part of the absorption line that increases with increasing solute concentration. At low concentrations, the fraction of water showing slow spectral dynamics is observed to scale with the number of methyl groups, indicating that this effect is due to slow hydrogen-bond dynamics in the hydration shell of the methyl groups of the solute molecules. The slowing down of the vibrational frequency dynamics is strongly correlated with the slowing down of the orientational mobility of the water molecules. This correlation indicates that these effects have a common origin in the effect of hydrophobic molecular groups on the hydrogen-bond dynamics of water.  相似文献

We present an investigation into hydrogen bonding dynamics and kinetics in water using femtosecond infrared spectroscopy of the OH stretching vibration of HOD in D(2)O. Infrared vibrational echo peak shift and polarization-selective pump-probe experiments were performed with mid-IR pulses short enough to capture all relevant dynamical processes. The experiments are self-consistently analyzed with a nonlinear response function expressed in terms of three dynamical parameters for the OH stretching vibration: the frequency correlation function, the lifetime, and the second Legendre polynomial dipole reorientation correlation function. It also accounts for vibrational-relaxation-induced excitation of intermolecular motion that appears as heating. The long time, picosecond behavior is consistent with previous work, but new dynamics are revealed on the sub-200 fs time scale. The frequency correlation function is characterized by a 50 fs decay and 180 fs beat associated with underdamped intermolecular vibrations of hydrogen bonding partners prior to 1.4 ps exponential relaxation. The reorientational correlation function observes a 50 fs librational decay prior to 3 ps diffusive reorientation. Both of these correlation functions compare favorably with the predictions from classical molecular dynamics simulations. The time-dependent behavior can be separated into short and long time scales by the 340 fs correlation time for OH frequency shifts. The fast time scales arise from dynamics that are mainly local: fluctuations in hydrogen bond distances and angles within relatively fixed intermolecular configurations. On time scales longer than the correlation time, dephasing and reorientations reflect collective reorganization of the liquid structure. Since the OH transition frequency and dipole are only weakly sensitive to these collective coordinates, this is a kinetic regime which gives an effective rate for exchange of intermolecular structures.  相似文献

The dielectric constant for lithium chloride (LiCl) in aqueous solution with the entire concentration has been determined in the frequency range 0.5 GHz–50GHz at 298 K by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS). The system behaviour is described according to the Cole–Cole and two Debye-type relaxation functions whose evolution with composition is analysed. Combining the Cole–Cole and two Debye-type relaxation functions, the results of the dielectric properties of aqueous LiCl solution are presented and discussed. The maximum number of water molecules perturbed by ions in the hydration shell decays with its concentration. Using the extended Froehlich theory, it is concluded that the water structure is perturbed by ions beyond the first hydration shell in LiCl aqueous solution system.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations were used to compute the frequency-dependent dielectric susceptibility of aqueous solutions of alanine and alanine dipeptide. We studied four alanine solutions, ranging in concentration from 0.13-0.55 mol/liter, and two solutions of alanine dipeptide (0.13 and 0.27 mol/liter). In accord with experiment we find a strong dielectric increment for both solutes, whose molecular origin is shown to be the zwitterionic nature of the solutes. The dynamic properties were analyzed based on a dielectric component analysis into solute, a first hydration shell, and all remaining (bulk) waters. The results of this three component decomposition were interpreted directly, as well as by uniting the solute and hydration shell component to a "suprasolute" component. In both approaches three contributions to the frequency-dependent dielectric properties can be discerned. The quantitatively largest and fastest component arises from bulk water [i.e., water not influenced by the solute(s)]. The interaction between waters surrounding the solute(s) (the hydration shell) and bulk water molecules leads to a relaxation process occurring on an intermediate time scale. The slowest relaxation process originates from the solute(s) and the interaction of the solute(s) with the first hydration shell and bulk water. The primary importance of the hydration shell is the exchange of shell and bulk waters; the self-contribution from bound water molecules is comparatively small. While in the alanine solutions the solute-water cross-terms are more important than the solute self-term, the solute contribution is larger in the dipeptide solutions. In the latter systems a much clearer separation of time scales between water and alanine dipeptide related properties is observed. The similarities and differences of the dielectric properties of the amino acid/peptide solutions studied in this work and of solutions of mono- and disaccharides and of the protein ubiquitin are discussed.  相似文献

The four-times positively charged zirconium ion in aqueous solution was simulated, using an ab initio quantum mechanical charge field molecular dynamics approach. As no hydrolysis reaction occurred during the simulation time of 10 ps, the target of this study was the evaluation of the structure and dynamics of the monomeric hydrated zirconium(iv) ion. The ion forms three hydration shells. In the first hydration shell the ion is 8-fold coordinated with a maximum probability of the Zr-O distance at 2.25 ?. While no exchanges occurred between the first and second shell, the mean residence time of the water molecules in the second shell is 5.5 ps. A geometry of the first hydration shell in-between a bi-capped trigonal prism and a square antiprism was found and a Zr-O force constant of 188 N m(-1) was evaluated.  相似文献
