We investigate the problem of the existence of a noncompact operator T:X0XY in terms of the asymptotic structure of separable Banach spaces X and Y. More precisely, for and , let Tξ,η be the linear map which sends each xi to yi. We prove that if for some then every T:X0XY is compact. If for n=2 all such maps have norm 1 we show the existence of a noncompact T:X0XY.  相似文献

A map f:XY between topological spaces is defined to be scatteredly continuous if for each subspace AX the restriction f|A has a point of continuity. We show that for a function f:XY from a perfectly paracompact hereditarily Baire Preiss–Simon space X into a regular space Y the scattered continuity of f is equivalent to (i) the weak discontinuity (for each subset AX the set D(f|A) of discontinuity points of f|A is nowhere dense in A), (ii) the piecewise continuity (X can be written as a countable union of closed subsets on which f is continuous), (iii) the Gδ-measurability (the preimage of each open set is of type Gδ). Also under Martin Axiom, we construct a Gδ-measurable map f:XY between metrizable separable spaces, which is not piecewise continuous. This answers an old question of V. Vinokurov.  相似文献

In this paper, we prove that the moduli of W*-convexity, introduced by Ji Gao [J. Gao, The W*-convexity and normal structure in Banach spaces, Appl. Math. Lett. 17 (2004) 1381–1386], of a Banach space X and of the ultrapower of X itself coincide whenever X is super-reflexive. Moreover, we improve a sufficient condition for uniform normal structure of the space and its dual. This generalizes and strengthens the main results of [J. Gao, The W*-convexity and normal structure in Banach spaces, Appl. Math. Lett. 17 (2004) 1381–1386].  相似文献

We prove that for every member X in the class of real or complex JB*-triples or preduals of JBW*-triples, the following assertions are equivalent:
(1) X has the fixed point property.
(2) X has the super fixed point property.
(3) X has normal structure.
(4) X has uniform normal structure.
(5) The Banach space of X is reflexive.
As a consequence, a real or complex C*-algebra or the predual of a real or complex W*-algebra having the fixed point property must be finite-dimensional.

If (Σ,X) is a measurable space and X a Banach space we investigate the X-inheritance of copies of ? in certain subspaces Δ(Σ,X) of bvca(Σ,X), the Banach space of all X-valued countable additive measures of bounded variation equipped with the variation norm. Among the consequences of our main theorem we get a theorem of J. Mendoza on the X-inheritance of copies of ? in the Bochner space L1(μ,X) and other of the author on the X-inheritance of copies of ? in bvca(Σ,X).  相似文献

We investigate non-separable Banach spaces whose norm-open sets are countable unions of sets closed in the weak topology and a narrower class of Banach spaces with a network for the norm topology which is σ-discrete in the weak topology. In particular, we answer a question of Arhangel'skii exhibiting various examples of non-separable function spaces C(K) with a σ-discrete network for the pointwise topology and (consistently) we answer some questions of Edgar and Oncina concerning Borel structures and Kadec renormings in Banach spaces.  相似文献

By a ball-covering B of a Banach space X, we mean that B is a collection of open (or closed) balls off the origin whose union contains the unit sphere SX of X; and X is said to have the ball-covering property (BCP) provided it admits a ball-covering by countably many balls. In this note we give a natural example showing that the ball-covering property of a Banach space is not inherited by its subspaces; and we present a sharp quantitative version of the recent Fonf and Zanco renorming result saying that if the dual X of X is w separable, then for every ε>0 there exist a (1+ε)-equivalent norm on X, and an R>0 such that in this new norm SX admits a ball-covering by countably many balls of radius R. Namely, we show that R=R(ε) can be taken arbitrarily close to (1+ε)/ε, and that for X=?1[0,1] the corresponding R cannot be equal to 1/ε. This gives the sharp order of magnitude for R(ε) as ε→0.  相似文献

In this paper, the solution of a standby human–machine system is investigated. By using the method of functional analysis, especially, the linear operator theory and the C0 semigroup theory on Banach space, we prove the well-posedness and the existence of a positive solution of the system. It is well known that a (linear) operator between Banach spaces is completely continuous if and only if its adjoint takes bounded subsets of Y* into uniformly completely continuous subsets, often called (L)-subsets, of X*. We give similar results for differentiable mappings. More precisely, if UX is an open convex subset, let be a differentiable mapping whose derivative is uniformly continuous on U-bounded subsets. We prove that f takes weak Cauchy U-bounded sequences into convergent sequences if and only if f takes Rosenthal U-bounded subsets of U into uniformly completely continuous subsets of . As a consequence, we extend a result of P. Hájek and answer a question raised by R. Deville and E. Matheron. We derive differentiable characterizations of Banach spaces not containing 1 and of Banach spaces without the Schur property containing a copy of 1. Analogous results are given for differentiable mappings taking weakly convergent U-bounded sequences into convergent sequences. Finally, we show that if X has the hereditary Dunford–Pettis property, then every differentiable function as above is locally weakly sequentially continuous.  相似文献

A new approach to computing the Fréchet subdifferential and the limiting subdifferential of integral functionals is proposed. Thanks to this way, we obtain formulae for computing the Fréchet and limiting subdifferentials of the integral functional , uL1(Ω,E). Here is a measured space with an atomless σ-finite complete positive measure, E is a separable Banach space, and . Under some assumptions, it turns out that these subdifferentials coincide with the Fenchel subdifferential of F.  相似文献

We prove the existence of fixed points for multivalued nonexpansive nonself-mappings on a weakly orthogonal reflexive Banach lattice with uniformly monotone norm. Moreover, for single-valued mappings, we extend Betiuk-Pilarska and Prus’s result [A. Betiuk-Pilarska, S. Prus, Banach lattices which are order uniformly noncreasy, J. Math. Anal. A Banach space X is said to have the kp-approximation property (kp-AP) if for every Banach space Y, the space F(Y,X) of finite rank operators is dense in the space Kp(Y,X) of p-compact operators endowed with its natural ideal norm kp. In this paper we study this notion that has been previously treated by Sinha and Karn (2002) in [15]. As application, the kp-AP of dual Banach spaces is characterized via density of finite rank operators in the space of quasi p-nuclear operators for the p-summing norm. This allows to obtain a relation between the kp-AP and Saphar's approximation property. As another application, the kp-AP is characterized in terms of a trace condition. Finally, we relate the kp-AP to the (p,p)-approximation property introduced in Sinha and Karn (2002) [15] for subspaces of Lp(μ)-spaces.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the fact that the topological degree theory of Leray and Schauder may be used for the development of the topological degree theory for bounded demicontinuous (S+)-perturbations f of strongly quasibounded maximal monotone operators T in separable reflexive Banach spaces. Certain basic homotopy properties and the extension of this degree theory to (possibly unbounded) strongly quasibounded perturbations f are shown to hold. This work uses the well known embedding of Browder and Ton, and extends the work of Berkovits who developed this theory for the case T=0. Besides being an interesting mathematical problem, the existence of such a degree theory may, conceivably, become useful in situations where the use of the Leray–Schauder degree (via infinite dimensional compactness) is necessary.  相似文献
