Stable suspensions of tunicate cellulose microfibrils were prepared by acid hydrolysis of the cellulosic mantles of tunicin. They formed a chiral nematic phase above a critical concentration. External magnetic fields were applied to the chiral nematic phase in two different manners to control its phase structure. (i) Static magnetic fields ranging 1-28 T were used to align the chiral nematic axis (helical axis) in the field direction. (ii) A rotating magnetic field (5 T, 10 rpm) was applied to unwind the helices and to form a nematic phase. These phenomena were interpreted in terms of the anisotropic diamagnetic susceptibility of the cellulose microfibril. The diamagnetic susceptibility of the microfibril is smaller in the direction parallel (chi( parallel)) to the fiber axis than in the direction perpendicular (chi( perpendicular)) to the fiber axis, that is, chi( parallel) < chi( perpendicular) < 0. Because the helical axis coincides with the direction normal ( perpendicular) to the fiber axis, the helical axis aligned parallel to the applied field. On the other hand, the rotating magnetic field induced the uniaxial alignment of the smallest susceptibility axis, that is, chi( parallel) in the present case, and brought about unwinding of the helices.  相似文献

Spontaneous entropic phase separation phenomena occur in a wide range of systems containing highly anisotropic colloidal particles. Among these are aqueous suspensions of negatively charged cellulose I nanocrystals produced by sulfuric acid hydrolysis of native cellulose, which phase separate into isotropic and chiral nematic liquid-crystalline phases. Phase separation of an isotropic phase from a completely ordered nanocrystal suspension may be induced by the addition of salts or nonadsorbing macromolecules. In previous work (Edgar, C. D.; Gray, D. G. Macromolecules 2002, 35, 7400-7406), an isotropic phase was found to form over a period of several days when blue dextran (a sulfonated triazine dye, Cibacron blue 3G-A, covalently attached to high-molecular-weight dextran chains) was added to initially ordered suspensions. Here we report work showing that the observed phase separation was associated with the charged dye molecules attached to the dextran. The Cibacron blue 3G-A dye attached to blue dextran was found to induce greater phase separation than free (unbound) dye; at increasing ionic strength, depletion attractions due to the blue dextran increasingly contribute to the phase separation.  相似文献

Chiral conducting polymers prepared by electropolymerising PEDOT in the presence of chiral anions such as hyaluronic acid and anionic collagen or in a chiral nematic phase (hydroxypropyl cellulose, HPC) show excellent chiral acid recognition. This paper demonstrates the enantioselective recognition and transfer of protonated mandelic acid and protons using chiral PEDOTs. Discrimination between (R)-(-)- and (S)-(+)-mandelic acid was observed using cyclic voltammetry and square-wave voltammetry.  相似文献

Cellulose acetate samples with a range of degrees of substitution (DS) were prepared by deacetylation of cellulose acetate (DS = 2.5). Chiral nematic solutions of the samples were prepared in formic acid. A handedness reversal from left to right was observed as the DS used to prepare the mesophase increased from 1.8 to 2.4. By selection of a suitably long-pitch mesophase, chiral nematic films cast from a CA (DS = 2.2)/formic acid solution showed a feint reflection of circularly polarized blue light. Deacetylation of this CA film gave a chiral nematic cellulose film with a more intense reflection band at the same wavelength. The improvement in intensity is attributed to the higher intrinsic birefringence of cellulose compared to cellulose acetate.  相似文献

There is continuing interest in the growing family of nanocellulosic materials prepared from plant cell wall material. While most of the research on cellulose nanocrystals has focused on the product of sulfuric acid hydrolysis stabilized by surface sulfate half-esters, cellulose nanocrystals with surface carboxyl groups have also been prepared by oxidation of lignocellulosic materials with ammonium persulfate. The major difference is that the persulfate oxidation leads to nanocrystals stabilized by surface carboxyl groups. Some properties of cellulose nanocrystals from cotton and wood, prepared by persulfate oxidation, are compared with those observed for nanocrystals prepared by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. Evidence from polarized light microscopy showed that the nanocrystal suspensions prepared by persulfate oxidation also form chiral nematic ordered phases in water.  相似文献

Stable colloidal suspensions of cellulose microcrystallites may be prepared from filter paper by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. Above a critical concentration, the suspensions form a chiral nematic ordered phase, or colloid crystal. The preparation conditions govern the properties of the individual cellulose microcrystallites, and hence the liquid crystalline phase separation of the cellulose suspensions. The particle properties and the phase separation of the suspensions were strongly dependent on the hydrolysis temperature and time, and on the intensity of the ultrasonic irradiation used to disperse the particles. The particle size of the microcrystallites was characterized with transmission electron microscopy and photon correlation spectroscopy. The surface charge was determined by conductometric titration. It was possible to fractionate the microcrystallites by size using the partitioning between isotropic and liquid crystalline phases; the longer microcrystallites migrate to the liquid crystalline phase  相似文献

The structure and properties of a chiral nematic phase, which reflects one hand of circularly polarized light in a narrow region of wavelength, of fully acetylated (ethyl) cellulose [(acetyl) (ethyl) cellulose, AEC] in acrylic acid (AA) were studied in comparison with (ethyl) cellulose (EC). AEC mesophase formed right-handed chiral nematic structure while EC formed left-handed one. AEC mesophase showed higher birefringence and reflection intensity. The relationship between the reflection wavelength and the polymer concentration was negatively correlated for both AEC and EC mesophases. The relationship between the reflection wavelength and the molecular weight was also negative for AEC mesophase whereas positive for EC mesophase. AEC mesophase was solidified by photopolymerization of AA moiety. It was revealed that the optical properties of AEC mesophase could be preserved by photopolymerization, since the resulting solid material reflects selectively one hand of circularly polarized light.  相似文献

Suspensions of negatively charged cellulose nanocrystal are obtained by sulfuric acid hydrolysis of cotton cellulose. Within a specific concentration range, the suspensions spontaneously phase separate to give isotropic and chiral nematic phases. Added anionic dyes of varying charge cause separation of an isotropic phase from the highly concentrated, completely anisotropic suspensions; these dyes have a much greater effect on the suspensions than the equivalent ionic strength of a simple 1:1 electrolyte (sodium chloride). Neutral, cationic and cellulose-binding anionic dyes do not cause phase separation in the anisotropic cellulose suspensions.  相似文献

The entropically driven coassembly of nanorods (cellulose nanocrystals, CNCs) and nanospheres (dye‐labeled spherical latex nanoparticles, NPs) was studied in aqueous suspensions and in solid films. In mixed CNC‐latex suspensions, phase separation into an isotropic latex‐NP‐rich and a chiral nematic CNC‐rich phase took place; the latter contained a significant amount of latex NPs. Drying the mixed suspension resulted in CNC‐latex films with planar disordered layers of latex NPs, which alternated with chiral nematic CNC‐rich regions. In addition, fluorescent latex NPs were embedded in the chiral nematic domains. The stratified morphology of the films, together with a random distribution of latex NPs in the anisotropic phase, led to the films having close‐to‐uniform fluorescence, birefringence, and circular dichroism properties.  相似文献

Chiral metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained rising attention as ordered nanoporous materials for enantiomer separations, chiral catalysis, and sensing. Among those, chiral MOFs are generally obtained through complex synthetic routes by using a limited choice of reactive chiral organic precursors as the primary linkers or auxiliary ligands. Here, we report a template-controlled synthesis of chiral MOFs from achiral precursors grown on chiral nematic cellulose-derived nanostructured bio-templates. We demonstrate that chiral MOFs, specifically, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF), unc -[Zn(2-MeIm)2, 2-MeIm=2-methylimidazole], can be grown from regular precursors within nanoporous organized chiral nematic nanocelluloses via directed assembly on twisted bundles of cellulose nanocrystals. The template-grown chiral ZIF possesses tetragonal crystal structure with chiral space group of P41, which is different from traditional cubic crystal structure of I-43 m for freely grown conventional ZIF-8. The uniaxially compressed dimensions of the unit cell of templated ZIF and crystalline dimensions are signatures of this structure. We observe that the templated chiral ZIF can facilitate the enantiotropic sensing. It shows enantioselective recognition and chiral sensing abilities with a low limit of detection of 39 μM and the corresponding limit of chiral detection of 300 μM for representative chiral amino acid, D- and L- alanine.  相似文献

A range of mixed ether-esters of cellulose was prepared from partially substituted ethylcellulose and methylcellulose. The 13C-NMR analysis of ethylcellulose with a DS of 2.5 indicated that the hydroxyl groups at carbon six of anhydroglucose units were completely substituted. Acetylation of the ethylcellulose under different conditions yielded (acetyl) (ethyl) cellulose (AEC) samples with acetyl degree of substitution ranging from 0 to 0.5. Fully substituted (propionyl) (ethyl) cellulose (PEC) and (acetyl) (methyl) cellulose (AMC) were also prepared. Chiral nematic liquid crystals were formed in these mixed ester/ethers of cellulose in concentrated solutions of acidic solvents. The critical concentration for the phase separation of the cellulosic solutions depended on the nature of the substituent, the degree of substitution, and the solvent at a given temperature. Methylcellulose solutions in trifluoroacetic acid and dichloroacetic acid form chiral nematic liquid crystals with a left-handed helicoidal structure. The acetylated methyl cellulose samples did not show the reversal of handedness with increasing acetyl content that was previously observed for the corresponding ethylcellulose samples. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Cellulose‐based materials have been and continue to be exceptionally important for humankind. Considering the bioavailability and societal relevance of cellulose, turning this renewable resource into an active material is a vital step towards sustainability. Herein we report a new form of cellulose‐derived material that combines tunable photonic properties with a unique mesoporous structure resulting from a new supramolecular cotemplating method. A composite of cellulose nanocrystals and a urea–formaldehyde resin organizes into a chiral nematic assembly, which yields a chiral nematic mesoporous continuum of desulfated cellulose nanocrystals after alkaline treatment. The mesoporous photonic cellulose (MPC) films undergo rapid and reversible changes in color upon swelling, and can be used for pressure sensing. These new active mesoporous cellulosic materials have potential applications in biosensing, optics, functional membranes, chiral separation, and tissue engineering.  相似文献

We proposed in a previous paper a unique form of β-glucan association, nematic ordered cellulose (NOC) that is molecularly ordered, yet non-crystalline. NOC has unique characteristics; in particular, its surface properties provide with a function of tracks or scaffolds for regulated movements and fiber-production of Acetobacter xylinum [Kondo et al. 2002. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 99: 14008–14013]. In order to extend the usage of this NOC film as a functional template, the present article attempts to clarify how β-glucan association is initiated and established by uniaxial stretching of water swollen cellulose gel films. Wide angle X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were employed to exhibit molecular behavior of the ordering at various scales. Then, the preparative method for NOC was applied to the other carbohydrate polymers such as α-chitin and cellulose/α-chitin blends, leading to nematic ordered states as well as cellulose. However, the method did not necessarily provide the typical structure like NOC at the molecular scale. Instead, it yielded a variety of hierarchical nematic ordered states at various scales, which allows development of new artificial ordered sheet structures.  相似文献

Colloidal chiral nematic suspensions of cellulose were prepared from dissolving grade wood pulp. On evaporation of the water, the suspension dries down to give iridescent cellulose films. The optical properties of the films may be characterized by incorporating dyes in the films, and following the ordering of the dye molecules by measurement of induced circular dichroism (ICD). Structural changes to the films, such as decreasing the chiral nematic pitch by increasing the salt content and increasing the chiral nematic order through magnetic alignment, can be monitored by measuring the changes in ICD.  相似文献

The effect of molecular chirality in thermotropic mesomorphic H-bonded polymeric systems has not really been investigated so far. Therefore, five new chiral mesogenic diamides have been prepared and described. Besides more ordered mesophases, the enantiomers exhibit a chiral nematic polymorphism detected by microcalorimetry and probably corresponding to different modes of chiral coiling to give these singular twisted nematic phases.  相似文献

Summary: In this article we present some interesting properties of rodlike cellulose microcrystals (so‐called “whiskers”). These microcrystals can be obtained from different cellulose sources such as wood, cotton, or animal origin. When submitted to acid hydrolysis, the cellulose fibers yield stable aqueous suspensions because of the presence of negative charges on the surface of the microcrystallites during the hydrolysis process. The obtained microcrystals are rod‐shaped particles, the dimensions of which depend on the cellulose origin. For instance, the cotton whiskers have typical dimensions varying from 100 to 300 nm in length, L, and 8 to 10 nm in diameter, d, while those of the tunicate whiskers range from 100 nm to few micrometers in length and 10 to 20 nm in diameter. At very low concentrations, these whiskers are randomly suspended in water and form an isotropic phase. When the concentration reaches a critical value, the whiskers spontaneously display ordered phases showing interesting liquid crystal properties (nematic and chiral nematic). The chiral nematic orders can be retained after evaporation of the solvent (generally water), leaving iridescent films. The reflected color can be controlled by changing either the ionic strength or by applying an electric field. These colloidal particles have been investigated using several techniques including small‐angle neutron scattering (SANS), small angle X‐ray scattering, rheology, and more recently dynamic and static light scattering techniques (DLS and SLS) to highlight their static and dynamic behavior. Because of their geometry, important axis ratio (L/d), and high crystallinity, these rods have been also extensively used to process nanocomposites based on polymer matrices, to reinforce their mechanical properties. All these properties are discussed in this contribution.

A new class of cholesterol‐based non‐symmetric dimers have been synthesized and characterized. They comprise O‐alkylated cinnamic acid and pro‐mesogenic cholesterol segments interlinked covalently through a methylene spacer varying in its length and parity. All the dimers and some of the key precursors have been studied for their phase behaviour. All the intermediates show mesomorphism. Importantly, the thermal properties of dimers are found to be critically dependent on the parity of the flexible spacer. The dimers with odd‐parity spacer display chiral nematic and/or twist grain boundary phases. In contrast, the dimers with even‐parity spacer are either crystalline or exhibit metastable chiral nematic and/or twist grain boundary phases with the exception of one compound for which two unknown mesophases have been observed. The odd–even effect was found to be indistinct for selective reflection wavelengths of the chiral nematic phase. For some dimers, a variation in the pitch of the chiral nematic phase as a function of temperature was observed. Cyclic voltammetry experiments revealed the electrochemical properties of a representative liquid crystal dimer.  相似文献
