There exist two frameworks of strain gradient plasticity theories to model size effects observed at the micron and sub-micron scales in experiments. The first framework involves the higher-order stress and therefore requires extra boundary conditions, such as the theory of mechanism-based strain gradient (MSG) plasticity [J Mech Phys Solids 47 (1999) 1239; J Mech Phys Solids 48 (2000) 99; J Mater Res 15 (2000) 1786] established from the Taylor dislocation model. The other framework does not involve the higher-order stress, and the strain gradient effect come into play via the incremental plastic moduli. A conventional theory of mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity is established in this paper. It is also based on the Taylor dislocation model, but it does not involve the higher-order stress and therefore falls into the second strain gradient plasticity framework that preserves the structure of conventional plasticity theories. The plastic strain gradient appears only in the constitutive model, and the equilibrium equations and boundary conditions are the same as the conventional continuum theories. It is shown that the difference between this theory and the higher-order MSG plasticity theory based on the same dislocation model is only significant within a thin boundary layer of the solid.  相似文献

Phenomenological higher-order strain-gradient plasticity is here presented through a formulation inspired by previous work for strain-gradient crystal plasticity. A physical interpretation of the phenomenological yield condition that involves an effect of second gradient of the equivalent plastic strain is discussed, applying a dislocation theory-based consideration. Then, a differential equation for the equivalent plastic strain-gradient is introduced as an additional governing equation. Its weak form makes it possible to deduce and impose extra boundary conditions for the equivalent plastic strain. A connection between the present treatment and strain-gradient theories based on an extended virtual work principle is discussed. Furthermore, a numerical implementation and analysis of constrained simple shear of a thin strip are presented.  相似文献

In the framework of strain gradient plasticity, a solid body with boundary surface playing the role of a dissipative boundary layer endowed with surface tension and surface energy, is addressed. Using the so-called residual-based gradient plasticity theory, the state equations and the higher order boundary conditions are derived quite naturally for both the bulk material and the boundary layer. A phenomenological constitutive model is envisioned, in which the bulk material and the boundary layer obey (rate independent associative) coupled plasticity evolution laws, with kinematic hardening laws of differential nature for the bulk material, but of nondifferential nature for the layer. A combined global maximum dissipation principle is shown to hold. The higher order boundary conditions are discussed in details and categorized in relation to some peculiar features of the boundary surface, and their basic role in the coupling of the bulk/layer plasticity evolution laws is pointed out. The case of an internal interface is also studied. An illustrative example relating to a shear model exhibiting energetic size effects is presented. The theory provides a unified view on gradient plasticity with interfacial energy effects.  相似文献

We investigate the problem of linear water wave propagation under a set of elastic plates of variable properties. The problem is two-dimensional, but we allow the waves to be incident from an angle. Since the properties of the elastic plates can be set arbitrarily, the solution method can also be applied to model regions of open water as well as elastic plates. We assume that the boundary conditions at the plate edges are the free boundary conditions, although the method could be extended straightforwardly to cover other possible boundary conditions. The solution method is based on an eigenfunction expansion under each elastic plate and on matching these expansions at each plate boundary. We choose the number of matching conditions so that we have fewer equations than unknowns. The extra equations are found by applying the free-edge boundary conditions. We show that our results agree with previous work and that they satisfy the energy balance condition. We also compare our results with a series of experiments using floating elastic plates, which were performed in a two-dimensional wave tank.  相似文献

A variational approach to determine the deformation of an ideally plastic substance is proposed by solving a sequence of energy minimization problems under proper conditions to account for the irreversible character of plasticity. The flow is driven by the local transformation of elastic strain energy into plastic work on slip surfaces, once that a certain energetic barrier for slip activation has been overcome. The distinction of the elastic strain energy into spherical and deviatoric parts is used to incorporate in the model the idea of von Mises plasticity and isochoric plastic strain. This is a “phase field model” because the matching condition at the slip interfaces is substituted by the evolution of an auxiliary phase field that, similar to a damage field, is unitary on the elastic phase and null on the yielded phase. The slip lines diffuse in bands, whose width depends upon a material length-scale parameter.Numerical experiments on representative problems in plane strain give solutions with noteworthy similarities with the results from classical slip-line field theory, but the proposed model is much richer because, accounting for elastic deformations, it can describe the formation of slip bands at the local level, which can nucleate, propagate, widen and diffuse by varying the boundary conditions. In particular, the solution for a long pipe under internal pressure is very different from the one obtainable from the classical macroscopic theory of plasticity. For this case, the location of the plastic bands may be an insight to explain the premature failures that are sometimes encountered during the manufacturing process. This practical example enhances the importance of this new theory based on the mathematical sciences.  相似文献

In this study we develop a gradient theory of small-deformation single-crystal plasticity that accounts for geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs). The resulting framework is used to discuss grain boundaries. The grains are allowed to slip along the interface, but growth phenomenona and phase transitions are neglected. The bulk theory is based on the introduction of a microforce balance for each slip system and includes a defect energy depending on a suitable measure of GNDs. The microforce balances are shown to be equivalent to nonlocal yield conditions for the individual slip systems, yield conditions that feature backstresses resulting from energy stored in dislocations. When applied to a grain boundary the theory leads to concomitant yield conditions: relative slip of the grains is activated when the shear stress reaches a suitable threshold; plastic slip in bulk at the grain boundary is activated only when the local density of GNDs reaches an assigned threshold. Consequently, in the initial stages of plastic deformation the grain boundary acts as a barrier to plastic slip, while in later stages the interface acts as a source or sink for dislocations. We obtain an exact solution for a simple problem in plane strain involving a semi-infinite compressed specimen that abuts a rigid material. We view this problem as an approximation to a situation involving a grain boundary between a grain with slip systems aligned for easy flow and a grain whose slip system alignment severely inhibits flow. The solution exhibits large slip gradients within a thin layer at the grain boundary.  相似文献

Discrete dislocation simulations of two boundary value problems are used as numerical experiments to explore the extent to which the nonlocal crystal plasticity theory of Gurtin (J. Mech. Phys. Solids 50 (2002) 5) can reproduce their predictions. In one problem simple shear of a constrained strip is analyzed, while the other problem concerns a two-dimensional model composite with elastic reinforcements in a crystalline matrix subject to macroscopic shear. In the constrained layer problem, boundary layers develop that give rise to size effects. In the composite problem, the discrete dislocation solutions exhibit composite hardening that depends on the reinforcement morphology, a size dependence of the overall stress-strain response for some morphologies, and a strong Bauschinger effect on unloading. In neither problem are the qualitative features of the discrete dislocation results represented by conventional continuum crystal plasticity. The nonlocal plasticity calculations here reproduce the behavior seen in the discrete dislocation simulations in remarkable detail.  相似文献

In this work, the strain gradient formulation is used within the context of the thermodynamic principle, internal state variables, and thermodynamic and dissipation potentials. These in turn provide balance of momentum, boundary conditions, yield condition and flow rule, and free energy and dissipative energies. This new formulation contributes to the following important related issues: (i) the effects of interface energy that are incorporated into the formulation to address various boundary conditions, strengthening and formation of the boundary layers, (ii) nonlocal temperature effects that are crucial, for instance, for simulating the behavior of high speed machining for metallic materials using the strain gradient plasticity models, (iii) a new form of the nonlocal flow rule, (iv) physical bases of the length scale parameter and its identification using nano-indentation experiments and (v) a wide range of applications of the theory. Applications to thin films on thick substrates for various loading conditions and torsion of thin wires are investigated here along with the appropriate length scale effect on the behavior of these structures. Numerical issues of the theory are discussed and results are obtained using Matlab and Mathematica for the nonlinear ordinary differential equations (NODE) which constitute the boundary value problem.This study reveals that the micro-stress term has an important effect on the development of the boundary layers and hardening of the material at both hard and soft interface boundary conditions in thin films. The interface boundary conditions are described by the interfacial length scale and interfacial strength parameters. These parameters are important to control the size effect and hardening of the material. For more complex geometries the generalized form of the boundary value problem using the nonlocal finite element formulation is required to address the problems involved.  相似文献

We give the results of large deflection experiments involving the bending and twisting of 1 mm diameter nickel-titanium alloy rods, up to 2 m in length. These results are compared to calculations based on the Cosserat theory of rods. We present details of this theory, formulated as a boundary value problem. The mathematical boundary conditions model the experimental setup. The rods are clamped in aligned chucks and the experiments are carried out under rigid loading conditions. An experiment proceeds by either twisting the ends of the rod by a certain amount and then adjusting the slack, or fixing the slack and varying the amount of twist. In this way, commonly encountered phenomena are investigated, such as snap buckling, the formation of loops, and buckling into and out of planar configurations. The effect of gravity is discussed.  相似文献

This study develops a gradient theory of single-crystal plasticity that accounts for geometrically necessary dislocations. The theory is based on classical crystalline kinematics; classical macroforces; microforces for each slip system consistent with a microforce balance; a mechanical version of the second law that includes, via the microforces, work performed during slip; a rate-independent constitutive theory that includes dependences on a tensorial measure of geometrically necessary dislocations. The microforce balances are shown to be equivalent to nonlocal yield conditions for the individual slip systems. The field equations consist of the yield conditions coupled to the standard macroscopic force balance; these are supplemented by classical macroscopic boundary conditions in conjunction with nonstandard boundary conditions associated with slip. As an aid to solution, a weak (virtual power) formulation of the nonlocal yield conditions is derived. To make contact with classical dislocation theory, the microstresses are shown to represent counterparts of the Peach-Koehler force on a single dislocation.  相似文献

This work addresses the formulation of the thermodynamics of nonlocal plasticity using the gradient theory. The formulation is based on the nonlocality energy residual introduced by Eringen and Edelen (1972). Gradients are introduced for those variables associated with isotropic and kinematic hardening. The formulation applies to small strain gradient plasticity and makes use of the evanescent memory model for kinematic hardening. This is accomplished using the kinematic flux evolution as developed by Zbib and Aifantis (1988). Therefore, the present theory is a four nonlocal parameter-based theory that accounts for the influence of large variations in the plastic strain, accumulated plastic strain, accumulated plastic strain gradients, and the micromechanical evolution of the kinematic flux. Using the principle of virtual power and the laws of thermodynamics, thermodynamically-consistent equations are derived for the nonlocal plasticity yield criterion and associated flow rule. The presence of higher-order gradients in the plastic strain is shown to enhance a corresponding history variable which arises from the accumulation of the plastic strain gradients. Furthermore, anisotropy is introduced by plastic strain gradients in the form of kinematic hardening. Plastic strain gradients can be attributed to the net Burgers vector, while gradients in the accumulation of plastic strain are responsible for the introduction of isotropic hardening. The equilibrium between internal Cauchy stress and the microstresses conjugate to the higher-order gradients frames the yield criterion, which is obtained from the principle of virtual power. Microscopic boundary conditions, associated with plastic flow, are introduced to supplement the macroscopic boundary conditions of classical plasticity. The nonlocal formulation developed here preserves the classical assumption of local plasticity, wherein plastic flow direction is governed by the deviatoric Cauchy stress. The theory is applied to the problems of thin films on both soft and hard substrates. Numerical solutions are presented for bi-axial tension and simple shear loading of thin films on substrates.  相似文献

In a recent publication, we derived the mesoscale continuum theory of plasticity for multiple-slip systems of parallel edge dislocations, motivated by the statistical-based nonlocal continuum crystal plasticity theory for single-glide given by Yefimov et al. [2004b. A comparison of a statistical-mechanics based plasticity model with discrete dislocation plasticity simulations. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 52, 279-300]. In this dislocation field theory (DiFT) the transport equations for both the total dislocation density and geometrically necessary dislocation (GND) density on each slip system were obtained from the Peach-Koehler interactions through both single and pair dislocation correlations. The effect of pair correlation interactions manifested itself in the form of a back stress in addition to the external shear and the self-consistent internal stress. We here present the study of size effects in single crystalline thin films with symmetric double slip using the novel continuum theory. Two boundary value problems are analyzed: (1) stress relaxation in thin films on substrates subject to thermal loading, and (2) simple shear in constrained films. In these problems, earlier discrete dislocation simulations had shown that size effects are born out of layers of dislocations developing near constrained interfaces. These boundary layers depend on slip orientations and applied loading but are insensitive to the film thickness. We investigate the stress response to changes in controlled parameters in both problems. Comparisons with previous discrete dislocation simulations are discussed.  相似文献

Exploring a recently developed mesoscale continuum theory of dislocation dynamics, we derive three predictions about plasticity and grain boundary formation in crystals. (1) There is a residual stress jump across grain boundaries and plasticity-induced cell walls as they form, which self-consistently acts to attract neighboring dislocations; residual stress in this theory appears as a remnant of the driving force behind wall formation under both polygonization and plastic deformation. We derive the predicted asymptotic late-time dynamics of the grain-boundary formation process. (2) During grain boundary formation at high temperatures, there is a predicted cusp in the elastic energy density. (3) In early stages of plasticity, when only one type of dislocation is active (single-slip), cell walls do not form in the theory; instead we predict the formation of a hitherto unrecognized jump singularity in the dislocation density.  相似文献

A finite strain viscoplastic nonlocal plasticity model is formulated and implemented numerically within a finite element framework. The model is a viscoplastic generalisation of the finite strain generalisation by Niordson and Redanz (2004) [Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids 52, 2431–2454] of the strain gradient plasticity theory proposed by Fleck and Hutchinson (2001) [Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids 49, 2245–2271]. The formulation is based on a viscoplastic potential that enables the formulation of the model so that it reduces to the strain gradient plasticity theory in the absence of viscous effects. The numerical implementation uses increments of the effective plastic strain rate as degrees of freedom in addition to increments of displacement. To illustrate predictions of the model, results are presented for materials containing either voids or rigid inclusions. It is shown how the model predicts increased overall yield strength, as compared to conventional predictions, when voids or inclusions are in the micron range. Furthermore, it is illustrated how the higher order boundary conditions at the interface between inclusions and matrix material are important to the overall yield strength as well as the material hardening.  相似文献

We propose a deformation theory of strain gradient crystal plasticity that accounts for the density of geometrically necessary dislocations by including, as an independent kinematic variable, Nye's dislocation density tensor [1953. Acta Metallurgica 1, 153-162]. This is accomplished in the same fashion as proposed by Gurtin and co-workers (see, for instance, Gurtin and Needleman [2005. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 53, 1-31]) in the context of a flow theory of crystal plasticity, by introducing the so-called defect energy. Moreover, in order to better describe the strengthening accompanied by diminishing size, we propose that the classical part of the plastic potential may be dependent on both the plastic slip vector and its gradient; for single crystals, this also makes it easier to deal with the “higher-order” boundary conditions. We develop both the kinematic formulation and its static dual and apply the theory to the simple shear of a constrained strip (example already exploited in Shu et al. [2001. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 49, 1361-1395], Bittencourt et al. [2003. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 51, 281-310], Niordson and Hutchinson [2003. Euro J. Mech. Phys. Solids 22, 771-778], Evers et al. [2004. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 52, 2379-2401], and Anand et al. [2005. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 53, 1789-1826]) to investigate what sort of behaviour the new model predicts. The availability of the total potential energy functional and its static dual allows us to easily solve this simple boundary value problem by resorting to the Ritz method.  相似文献

Numerical simulations have been used to study the flow of a Bingham viscoplastic fluid around a circular cylinder in an infinite medium with negligible inertia effects. Papanastasiou's regularisation technique has been adopted to approximate the model. The case corresponding to preponderant plasticity effects has been particularly studied and convergence of the solutions examined in detail. The flow kinematics and stresses have been determined. The rigid zones have been identified and characterised. At large Oldroyd numbers, when plasticity effects become preponderant, a viscoplastic boundary layer appears around the cylinder. The characteristics of this viscoplastic boundary layer are quantified. The results are compared with existing theoretical results, concerning particularly the predictions of the viscoplastic boundary layer theory and the plasticity theory.  相似文献

Under small strains and rotations, we apply a phenomenological higher-order theory of distortion gradient plasticity to the torsion problem, here assumed as a paradigmatic benchmark of small-scale plasticity. Peculiar of the studied theory, proposed about ten years ago by Morton E. Gurtin, is the constitutive inclusion of the plastic spin, affecting both the free energy and the dissipation. In particular, the part of the free energy, called the defect energy, which accounts for Geometrically Necessary Dislocations, is a function of Nye's dislocation density tensor, dependent on the plastic distortion, including the plastic spin. For the specific torsion problem, we implement this distortion gradient plasticity theory into a Finite Element (FE) code characterised by implicit (Backward Euler) time integration, numerically robust and accurate for both viscoplastic and rate-independent material responses. We show that, contrariwise to other higher-order theories of strain gradient plasticity (neglecting the plastic spin), the distortion gradient plasticity can predict some strengthening even if a quadratic defect energy is chosen. On the basis of the results of many FE analyses, concerned with (i) cyclic loading, (ii) switch in the higher-order boundary conditions during monotonic plastic loading, (iii) the use of non-quadratic defect energies, and (iv) the prediction of experimental data, we mainly show that (a) including the plastic spin contribution in a gradient plasticity theory is highly recommendable to model small-scale plasticity, (b) less-than-quadratic defect energies may help in describing the experimental results, but they may lead to anomalous cyclic behaviour, and (c) dissipative (unrecoverable) higher-order finite stresses are responsible for an unexpected mechanical response under non-proportional loading.  相似文献

Perhaps the simplest non-trivial problem in small deformation dynamic plasticity is expansion of a spherical cavity in an infinite elastic-perfectly-plastic medium. Here, example problems are considered with two boundary conditions at the cavity's surface: constant velocity and constant pressure. Attempts to obtain analytical solutions are complicated by the fact that, in general, the elastic-plastic boundary propagates with variable speed. However, it is known that the elastic-plastic boundary propagates at constant speed for the starting problem when the shocks due to the applied loads are large enough to cause inelastic response at the instant they are applied. When the value of the applied pressure equals the shock pressure due to the applied velocity the solutions of the two boundary value problems are initially identical and can be compared. The objective of this paper is to review the literature and to examine the termination conditions for the starting problem. Specifically, the starting problem terminates when either the jump in radial stress at the elastic-plastic boundary or the loading condition for plasticity vanishes there. These termination conditions depend on the applied load and on Poisson's ratio.  相似文献

The problem of deformation of a horizontal plane layer of a compressible material is solved in the framework of the theory of small strains. The upper boundary of the layer is under the action of shear and compressing loads, and the no-slip condition is satisfied on the lower boundary of the layer. The loads increase in absolute value with time, then become constant, and then decrease to zero.Various plasticity conditions are consideredwith regard to the material compressibility, namely, the Coulomb–Mohr plasticity condition, the von Mises–Schleicher plasticity condition, and the same conditions with the viscous properties of the material taken into account. To solve the system of partial differential equations for the components of irreversible strains, a finite-difference scheme is developed for a spatial domain increasing with time. The laws of motion of elastoplastic boundaries are presented, the stresses, strains, rates of strain, and displacements are calculated, and the residual stresses and strains are found.  相似文献
