Composition operators on Dirichlet-type spaces

The Dirichlet-type space ) is the Banach space of functions analytic in the unit disc with derivatives belonging to the Bergman space . Let be an analytic self-map of the disc and define for . The operator is bounded (respectively, compact) if and only if a related measure is Carleson (respectively, compact Carleson). If is bounded (or compact) on , then the same behavior holds on ) and on the weighted Dirichlet space . Compactness on implies that is compact on the Hardy spaces and the angular derivative exists nowhere on the unit circle. Conditions are given which, together with the angular derivative condition, imply compactness on the space . Inner functions which induce bounded composition operators on are discussed briefly.

     

A counterexample for approximable functions

Let be the unit disk. We show that for some relatively closed set there is a function that can be uniformly approximated on by functions of , but such that cannot be written as , with and uniformly continuous on . This answers a question of Stray.

     

The Phillips properties

A Banach space has the Phillips property if the canonical projection is sequentially weak-norm continuous, and has the weak Phillips property if is sequentially weak-weak continuous. We study both properties in connection with other geometric properties, such as the Dunford-Pettis property, Pelczynski's properties and (V), and the Schur property.

     

On conjugation invariants in the dual Steenrod algebra

We investigate the canonical conjugation, , of the mod dual Steenrod algebra, , with a view to determining the subspace, , of elements invariant under . We give bounds on the dimension of this subspace for each degree and show that, after inverting , it becomes polynomial on a natural set of generators. Finally we note that, without inverting , is far from being polynomial.

     

Weak type estimates for cone multipliers on

We consider operators associated with the Fourier multipliers and show that is of weak type on , , for the critical value .

     

-semigroups generated by second order differential operators with general Wentzell boundary conditions

Let us consider the operator where is positive and continuous in and is equipped with the so-called generalized Wentzell boundary condition which is of the form at each boundary point, where This class of boundary conditions strictly includes Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin conditions.

Under suitable assumptions on , we prove that generates a positive -semigroup on and, hence, many previous (linear or nonlinear) results are extended substantially.

     

On the Diophantine equation

Let be an odd prime. In this paper, using some theorems of Adachi and the author, we prove that if and , then the equation , and the equation , have no integral solutions respectively. Here is th Bernoulli number.

     

Remarks about Schlumprecht space

Let denote the Schlumprecht space. We prove that

(1) is finitely disjointly representable in ;

(2) contains an -spreading model;

(3) for any sequence of natural numbers, is isomorphic to the space .

     

Fixed point and selection theorems in hyperconvex spaces

It is shown that a set-valued mapping of a hyperconvex metric space which takes values in the space of nonempty externally hyperconvex subsets of always has a lipschitzian single valued selection which satisfies for all . (Here denotes the usual Hausdorff distance.) This fact is used to show that the space of all bounded -lipschitzian self-mappings of is itself hyperconvex. Several related results are also obtained.

     

Pyramidal vectors and smooth functions on Banach spaces

We prove that if , are Banach spaces such that has nontrivial cotype and has trivial cotype, then smooth functions from into have a kind of ``harmonic" behaviour. More precisely, we show that if is a bounded open subset of and is -smooth with uniformly continuous Fréchet derivative, then is dense in . We also give a short proof of a recent result of P. Hájek.

     

Detecting completeness from Ext-vanishing

Motivated by work of C. U. Jensen, R.-O. Buchweitz, and H. Flenner, we prove the following result. Let be a commutative noetherian ring and an ideal in the Jacobson radical of . Let be the -adic completion of . If is a finitely generated -module such that for all , then is -adically complete.

     

Existence and uniqueness theorems for singular anisotropic quasilinear elliptic boundary value problems

On bounded domains we consider the anisotropic problems in with 1$"> and on and in with and on . Moreover, we generalize these boundary value problems to space-dimensions 2$">. Under geometric conditions on and monotonicity assumption on we prove existence and uniqueness of positive solutions.     

Homogeneous polynomials on strictly convex domains

We consider a circular, bounded, strictly convex domain with boundary of class . For any compact subset of we construct a sequence of homogeneous polynomials on which are big at each point of . As an application for any circular subset of type we construct a holomorphic function which is square integrable on and such that where denotes unit disc in .

     

Linear bijections preserving the Hölder seminorm

Let be a compact metric space and let be a real number with The aim of this paper is to solve a linear preserver problem on the Banach algebra of Hölder functions of order from into We show that each linear bijection having the property that for every where

is of the form for every where with is a surjective isometry and is a linear functional.

     

Similarity to a contraction and hypercontractivity of composition operators

On the Hardy spaces with , we consider the composition operators induced by analytic self-maps of the open unit disc . First, we characterize those which are similar to contractions. Then, we give some necessary and sufficient conditions for them to be hypercontractive. Finally, we prove that, among those ones, only the zero-symbol composition operator sends into with a norm less than or equal to .

     

Trudinger type inequalities in and their best exponents

We study Trudinger type inequalities in and their best exponents . We show for , ( is the surface area of the unit sphere in ), there exists a constant such that

It is also shown that with is false, which is different from the usual Trudinger's inequalities in bounded domains.

     

A new estimate in optimal mass transport

Let be a bounded Lipschitz regular open subset of and let be two probablity measures on . It is well known that if is absolutely continuous, then there exists, for every , a unique transport map pushing forward on and which realizes the Monge-Kantorovich distance . In this paper, we establish an bound for the displacement map which depends only on , on the shape of and on the essential infimum of the density .

     

Minimal index of a -crossed product by a finite group

Let be the -crossed product of a simple unital -algebra by a finite group . In this paper we show that the canonical conditional expectation from to has the minimal index if is simple. It is also proved that if is an outer action, then the canonical one is the unique conditional expectation of index-finite type from to , while there are infinitely many conditional expectations when a nontrivial subgroup of acts innerly on .

     

Stable constant mean curvature hypersurfaces

Let be a Riemannian manifold with sectional curvatures uniformly bounded from below. When we prove that there are no complete (strongly) stable -hypersurfaces, without boundary, provided is large enough. In particular, we prove that there are no complete strongly stable -hypersurfaces in without boundary,

     

On quasi-isometric embeddings of Lamplighter groups

We denote by the Lamplighter group of a finite group . In this article, we show that if and are two finite groups with at least two elements, then there exists a quasi-isometric embedding from to . We also prove that the quasi-isometry group of contains all finite groups. We then show that the group of automorphisms of has infinite index in .
