A discrete time Markov chain assumes that the population is homogeneous, each individual in the population evolves according to the same transition matrix. In contrast, a discrete mover‐stayer (MS) model postulates a simple form of population heterogeneity; in each initial state, there is a proportion of individuals who never leave this state (stayers) and the complementary proportion of individuals who evolve according to a Markov chain (movers). The MS model was extended by specifying the stayer's probability to be a logistic function of an individual's covariates but leaving the same transition matrix for all movers. We further extend the MS model by allowing each mover to have her/his covariates dependent transition matrix. The model for a mover's transition matrix is related to the extant Markov chains mixture model with mixing on the speed of movement of Markov chains. The proposed model is estimated using the expectation‐maximization algorithm and illustrated with a large data set on car loans and the simulation.  相似文献

The internal‐rating‐based Basel II approach increases the need for the development of more realistic default probability models. In this paper, we follow the approach taken in McNeil A and Wendin J 7 (J. Empirical Finance 2007) by constructing generalized linear mixed models for estimating default probabilities from annual data on companies with different credit ratings. The models considered, in contrast to McNeil A and Wendin J 7 (J. Empirical Finance 2007), allow parsimonious parametric models to capture simultaneously dependencies of the default probabilities on time and credit ratings. Macro‐economic variables can also be included. Estimation of all model parameters are facilitated with a Bayesian approach using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. Special emphasis is given to the investigation of predictive capabilities of the models considered. In particular, predictable model specifications are used. The empirical study using default data from Standard and Poor's gives evidence that the correlation between credit ratings further apart decreases and is higher than the one induced by the autoregressive time dynamics. A discrete‐time mover‐stayer (MS) model is an extension of a discrete‐time Markov chain, which assumes a simple form of population heterogeneity. The individuals in the population are either stayers, who never leave their initial states or movers who move according to a Markov chain. We, in turn, propose an extension of the MS model by specifying the stayer's probability as a logistic function of an individual's covariates. Such extension has been recently discussed for a continuous time MS but has not been considered before for a discrete time one. This extension allows for an in‐sample classification of subjects who never left their initial states into stayers or movers. The parameters of an extended MS model are estimated using the expectation‐maximization algorithm. A novel bootstrap procedure is proposed for out of sample validation of the in‐sample classification. The bootstrap procedure is also applied to validate the in‐sample classification with respect to a more general dichotomy than the MS one. The developed methods are illustrated with the data set on installment loans. But they can be applied more broadly in credit risk area, where prediction of creditworthiness of a loan borrower or lessee is of major interest.  相似文献

We discuss extensions of reduced-form and structural models for pricing credit risky securities to portfolio simulation and valuation. Stochasticity in interest rates and credit spreads is captured via reduced-form models and is incorporated with a default and migration model based on the structural credit risk modelling approach. Calculated prices are consistent with observed prices and the term structure of default-free and defaultable interest rates. Three applications are discussed: (i) study of the inter-temporal price sensitivity of credit bonds and the sensitivity of future portfolio valuation with respect to changes in interest rates, default probabilities, recovery rates and rating migration, (ii) study of the structure of credit risk by investigating the impact of disparate risk factors on portfolio risk, and (iii) tracking of corporate bond indices via simulation and optimisation models. In particular, we study the effect of uncertainty in credit spreads and interest rates on the overall risk of a credit portfolio, a topic that has been recently discussed by Kiesel et al. [The structure of credit risk: spread volatility and ratings transitions. Technical report, Bank of England, ISSN 1268-5562, 2001], but has been otherwise mostly neglected. We find that spread risk and interest rate risk are important factors that do not diversify away in a large portfolio context, especially when high-quality instruments are considered.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a parameter estimation procedure for a condition‐based maintenance model under partial observations. Systems can be in a healthy or unhealthy operational state, or in a failure state. System deterioration is driven by a continuous time homogeneous Markov chain and the system state is unobservable, except the failure state. Vector information that is stochastically related to the system state is obtained through condition monitoring at equidistant sampling times. Two types of data histories are available — data histories that end with observable failure, and censored data histories that end when the system has been suspended from operation but has not failed. The state and observation processes are modeled in the hidden Markov framework and the model parameters are estimated using the expectation–maximization algorithm. We show that both the pseudolikelihood function and the parameter updates in each iteration of the expectation–maximization algorithm have explicit formulas. A numerical example is developed using real multivariate spectrometric oil data coming from the failing transmission units of 240‐ton heavy hauler trucks used in the Athabasca oil sands of Alberta, Canada. We estimate the probability of delinquency and default for a sample of credit card loans using intensity models, via semi-parametric multiplicative hazard models with time-varying covariates. It is the first time these models, previously applied for the estimation of rating transitions, are used on retail loans. Four states are defined in this non-homogenous Markov chain: up-to-date, one month in arrears, two months in arrears, and default; where transitions between states are affected by individual characteristics of the debtor at application and their repayment behaviour since. These intensity estimations allow for insights into the factors that affect movements towards (and recovery from) delinquency, and into default (or not). Results indicate that different types of debtors behave differently while in different states. The probabilities estimated for each type of transition are then used to make out-of-sample predictions over a specified period of time.  相似文献

This paper offers a joint estimation approach for forecasting probabilities of default and loss rates given default in the presence of selection. The approach accommodates fixed and random risk factors. An empirical analysis identifies bond ratings, borrower characteristics and macroeconomic information as important risk factors. A portfolio-level analysis finds evidence that common risk measurement approaches may underestimate bank capital by up to 17% relative to the presented model.  相似文献

A one‐parameter exhaustible Poisson process model is formulated to represent the cumulative divorce trajectory of marriage cohorts. On the basis of recently published data of nine‐year cumulative records of all one‐year United States marriage cohorts, 1949–1958, it is found that the one‐parameter model does not provide an empirically adequate representation of cohort divorce trajectories. Therefore, two modifications of the basic model are explored. First, it is assumed that the longer the couples remain married the smaller is the probability of their becoming divorced (a cumulative inertia modification). Second, it is assumed that the cohort can be divided into two groups one of which is subject to risk of divorce while the other is not (a mover‐stayer modification). It is concluded that the latter model provides a better approximation to the empirically observed divorce trajectories. Given availability of disaggregated observations of divorces for marriage cohorts, the model could be used as a mathematical language for the construction of a theory of divorce differentials and changes in the divorce condition over time.  相似文献

This paper proposes an extension of Merton's jump‐diffusion model to reflect the time inhomogeneity caused by changes of market states. The benefit is that it simultaneously captures two salient features in asset returns: heavy tailness and volatility clustering. On the basis of an empirical analysis where jumps are found to happen much more frequently in risky periods than in normal periods, we assume that the Poisson process for driving jumps is governed by a two‐state on‐off Markov chain. This makes jumps happen interruptedly and helps to generate different dynamics under these two states. We provide a full analysis for the proposed model and derive the recursive formulas for the conditional state probabilities of the underlying Markov chain. These analytical results lead to an algorithm that can be implemented to determine the prices of European options under normal and risky states. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate how time inhomogeneity influences return distributions, option prices, and volatility smiles. The contrasting patterns seen in different states indicate the insufficiency of using time‐homogeneous models and justify the use of the proposed model. We consider a two-dimensional reduced form contagion model with regime-switching interacting default intensities. The model assumes the intensities of the default times are driven by macro-economy described by a homogeneous Markov chain as well as the other default. By using the idea of 'change of measure' and some closed-form formulas for the Laplace transforms of the integrated intensity processes, we derive the two-dimensional conditional and unconditional joint distributions of the default times. Based on these results, we give the explicit formulas for the fair spreads of the first-to-default and second-to-default credit default swaps (CDSs) on two underlyings.  相似文献

用Logistic模型计算公司违约概率在实际应用中存在两个问题:一是在缺乏公司违约记录数据库或违约记录数据库不典型的情况下,无法应用该模型或模型计算结果不准确;二是现有Logistic违约概率模型忽视了不同行业财务指标分布特征的差异性,导致公司违约概率计算结果的准确性降低。针对问题一,本文通过公司债券信用利差计算市场隐含的公司违约概率,在Logistic变换的基础上进一步确定Logistic线性回归的参数,使得公司违约概率的计算结果符合债券市场的实际状况。针对问题二,通过不同行业关键财务指标的单因子方差分析,证实了行业间财务指标的分布特征具有显著性差异,通过拟合优度证实了区分行业建立Logistic违约概率模型可显著提高违约概率测算的准确性。本文Logistic违约概率模型的构建过程如下:通过初选财务指标的相关性分析,删除反映信息重复的财务指标;通过Logistic回归中财务指标系数的显著性检验,删除对违约概率解释能力弱的财务指标;以Logistic回归的拟合优度为标准,选取各样本行业Logistic违约概率模型的关键财务指标,建立了机械设备等5个样本行业的Logistic违约概率模型,为样本内行业公司违约概率的准确测算提供模型与方法。本文的创新与特色:一是在无套利条件下,通过公司债券信用利差计算市场隐含的公司违约概率,并对其进行Logistic变换,作为Logistic线性回归的被解释变量,解决了在缺乏公司违约记录数据情况下Logistic违约概率模型的参数估计问题;二是通过单因子方差分析方法,证实了行业间财务指标的分布特征具有显著性差异,说明应区分行业建立Logistic违约概率模型;三是通过财务指标间的相关分析删除反映信息重复的财务指标,通过财务指标系数的显著性检验删除对公司违约概率解释能力弱的财务指标,保证了Logistic违约概率模型中关键财务指标选取的合理性;四是实证研究结果表明,不同行业的Logistic违约概率模型的关键财务指标不同,同一财务指标的参数也存在显著差异。实证研究结果还表明,区分行业建立Logistic违约概率模型与不区分行业相比,前者可将拟合优度及调整后的拟合优度提高近1倍。本文研究结果对于提高公司违约概率测算的准确性具有重要参考意义,对于商业银行贷款定价、公司债券发行定价、银行信用风险管理具有重要参考意义。  相似文献

In banking, the default behaviour of the counterpart is not only of interest for the pricing of transactions under credit risk but also for the assessment of a portfolio credit risk. We develop a test against the hypothesis that default intensities are chronologically constant within a group of similar counterparts, e.g. a rating class. The Kolmogorov–Smirnov‐type test builds up on the asymptotic normality of counting processes in event history analysis. The right censoring accommodates for Markov processes with more than one no‐absorbing state. A simulation study and two examples of rating systems demonstrate that partial homogeneity can be assumed, however occasionally, certain migrations must be modelled and estimated inhomogeneously. 当上市银行的长期负债系数γ的取值不同时,应用KMV模型测算出的银行违约概率大相径庭。根据债券的实际信用利差可以推算出上市银行的违约概率PDi,CS,根据长期负债系数γ可以运用KMV模型确定上市银行的理论违约概率PDi,KMV。本文通过理论违约率与实际违约率的总体差异∑ni=1|PDi,KMV-PDi,cs|最小的思路建立规划模型,确定了KMV模型的最优长期负债γ系数;通过最优长期负债系数γ建立了未发债上市银行的违约率测算模型、并实证测算了我国14家全部上市银行的违约概率。本文的创新与特色一是采用KMV模型计算的银行违约概率PDi,KMV与实际信用利差确定的银行违约概率PDi,CS总体差异∑ni=1|PDi,KMV-PDi,cs|最小的思路建立规划模型,确定了KMV模型中的最优长期负债γ系数;使γ系数的确定符合资本市场利差的实际状况,解决了现有研究中在0和1之间当采用不同的长期负债系数γ、其违约概率的计算结果截然不同的问题。二是实证研究表明,当长期负债系数γ=0.7654时,应用KMV模型测算出的我国上市银行违约概率与我国债券市场所接受的上市银行违约概率最为接近。三是实证研究表明国有上市银行违约概率最低,区域性的上市银行违约概率较高,其他上市银行的违约概率居中。  相似文献

We have addressed the problem of pricing risky zero coupon bond in the framework of Longstaff and Schwartz structural type model by pricing it as a Down-and-Out European Barrier Call option on the company’s asset-debt ratio assuming Markov regime switching economy. The growth rate and the volatility of the stochastic asset debt ratio is driven by a continuous time Markov chain which signifies state of the economy. Regime Switching renders market incomplete and selection of a Equivalent martingale measure (EMM) becomes a subtle issue. We price the zero coupon risky bond utilizing the powerful technique of Risk Minimizing hedging of the underlying Barrier option under the so called “Risk Minimal” martingale measure via computing the bond default probability.  相似文献

This paper develops a Bayesian method by jointly formulating a corporate bond (CB) pricing model and credit default swap (CDS) premium pricing models to estimate the term structure of default probabilities and the recovery rate. These parameters are formulated by incorporating firm characteristics such as industry, credit rating and Balance Sheet/Profit and Loss information. A cross-sectional model valuing all given CB prices and CDS premiums is considered. The quantities derived are regarded as what market participants infer in forming CB prices and CDS premiums. We also develop a statistical significance test procedure without any distributional assumptions for the specified model. An empirical analysis is conducted using Japanese CB and CDS market data.  相似文献

We consider the unilateral credit valuation adjustment (CVA) of a credit default swap (CDS) under a contagion model with regime-switching interacting intensities. The model assumes that the interest rate, the recovery, and the default intensities of the protection seller and the reference entity are all influenced by macro-economy described by a homogeneous Markov chain. By using the idea of “change of measure” and some formulas for the Laplace transforms of the integrated intensity processes, we derive the semi-analytical formulas for the joint distribution of the default times and the unilateral CVA of a CDS.  相似文献

As an analog of the Poisson limit theorem for a homogeneous Markov chain recurring to small cylindrical sets, a Poisson limit theorem is given for the non-homogeneous Markov chain. In modeling manpower systems, it is of crucial importance to deal with heterogeneity. Until recently, manpower models are dealing with heterogeneity due to observable sources, neglecting heterogeneity due to latent sources. In this paper a two-step procedure is introduced. In the first step personnel groups homogeneous with respect to the transition probabilities are determined in a classical way by taking into account the observable sources of heterogeneity. In the second step heterogeneity caused by latent sources is handled. A multinomial Markov-switching manpower model is introduced that deals with heterogeneity due to latent sources for the internal flows as well as for the wastage flows. The model incorporates the mover-stayer principle. A re-estimation algorithm is presented to estimate the parameters of the Markov-switching manpower model. The switching approach offers a methodology to build a Markov model with personnel groups as states that are more homogeneous, and therefore can contribute to a better validity of the manpower model.  相似文献

We study the pricing of defaultable derivatives, such as bonds, bond options, and credit default swaps in the reduced form framework of intensity‐based models. We use regular and singular perturbation expansions on the intensity of default from which we derive approximations for the pricing functions of these derivatives. In particular, we assume an Ornstein‐Uhlenbeck process for the interest rate, and a two‐factor diffusion model for the intensity of default. The approximation allows for computational efficiency in calibrating the model. Finally, empirical evidence on the existence of multiple scales is presented by the calibration of the model on corporate yield curves.  相似文献

Credit risk measurement and management are important and current issues in the modern finance world from both the theoretical and practical perspectives. There are two major schools of thought for credit risk analysis, namely the structural models based on the asset value model originally proposed by Merton and the intensity‐based reduced form models. One of the popular credit risk models used in practice is the Binomial Expansion Technique (BET) introduced by Moody's. However, its one‐period static nature and the independence assumption for credit entities' defaults are two shortcomings for the use of BET in practical situations. Davis and Lo provided elegant ways to ease the two shortcomings of BET with their default infection and dynamic continuous‐time intensity‐based approaches. This paper first proposes a discrete‐time dynamic extension to the BET in order to incorporate the time‐dependent and time‐varying behaviour of default probabilities for measuring the risk of a credit risky portfolio. In reality, the ‘true’ default probabilities are unobservable to credit analysts and traders. Here, the uncertainties of ‘true’ default probabilities are incorporated in the context of a dynamic Bayesian paradigm. Numerical studies of the proposed model are provided.  相似文献
