We study path problems in skew-symmetric graphs. These problems generalize the standard graph reachability and shortest path problems. We establish combinatorial solvability criteria and duality relations for the skew-symmetric path problems and use them to design efficient algorithms for these problems. The cost scaling push-relabel method has been shown to be efficient for solving minimum-cost flow problems. In this paper we apply the method to the assignment problem and investigate implementations of the method that take advantage of assignment's special structure. Several researchers have recently developed new techniques that give fast algorithms for the minimum-cost flow problem. In this paper we combine several of these techniques to yield an algorithm running in O(nm(log logU) log(nC)) time on networks withn vertices,m edges, maximum arc capacityU, and maximum arc cost magnitudeC. The major techniques used are the capacity-scaling approach of Edmonds and Karp, the excess-scaling approach of Ahuja and Orlin, the cost-scaling approach of Goldberg and Tarjan, and the dynamic tree data structure of Sleator and Tarjan. For nonsparse graphs with large maximum arc capacity, we obtain a similar but slightly better bound. We also obtain a slightly better bound for the (noncapacitated) transportation problem. This paper presents an algorithm based on barrier functions for solving semi-infinite minimax problems which arise in an engineering design setting. The algorithm bears a resemblance to some of the current interior penalty function methods used to solve constrained minimization problems. Global convergence is proven, and numerical results are reported which show that the algorithm is exceptionally robust, and that its performance is comparable, while its structure is simpler than that of current first-order minimax algorithms.This research was supported by the National Science Foundation grant ECS-8517362, the Air Force Office Scientific Research grant 86-0116, the California State MICRO program, and the United Kingdom Science and Engineering Research Council.  相似文献

Most asymptotic convergence analysis of interior-point algorithms for monotone linear complementarity problems assumes that the problem is nondegenerate, that is, the solution set contains a strictly complementary solution. Goldfarb and Hao (1990) have proposed a pivot rule for the primal network simplex algorithm that will solve a maximum flow problem on ann-vertex,m-arc network in at mostnm pivots and O(n 2 m) time. In this paper we describe how to extend the dynamic tree data structure of Sleator and Tarjan (1983, 1985) to reduce the running time of this algorithm to O(nm logn). This bound is less than a logarithmic factor larger than those of the fastest known algorithms for the problem. We propose a sufficient condition that allows an optimal basis to be identified from a central path point in a linear programming problem. This condition can be applied when there is a gap in the sorted list of slack values. We propose a new algorithm for the max-flow problem. It consists of a sequence of augmentations along paths constructed by an auction-like algorithm. These paths are not necessarily shortest, that is, they need not contain a minimum number of arcs. However, they can be found typically with much less computation than the shortest augmenting paths used by competing methods. Our algorithm outperforms these latter methods as well as state-of-the-art preflow-push algorithms by a very large margin in tests with standard randomly generated problems.This paper is a substantially revised version of Ref. 1.Many thanks are due to David Castanon and Paul Tseng for several helpful comments. In this paper we show that a variant of the long-step affine scaling algorithm (with variable stepsizes) is two-step superlinearly convergent when applied to general linear programming (LP) problems. Superlinear convergence of the sequence of dual estimates is also established. For homogeneous LP problems having the origin as the unique optimal solution, we also show that 2/3 is a sharp upper bound on the (fixed) stepsize that provably guarantees that the sequence of primal iterates converge to the optimal solution along a unique direction of approach. Since the point to which the sequence of dual estimates converge depend on the direction of approach of the sequence of primal iterates, this result gives a plausible (but not accurate) theoretical explanation for why 2/3 is a sharp upper bound on the (fixed) stepsize that guarantees the convergence of the dual estimates. We study the problem of solving a constrained system of nonlinear equations by a combination of the classical damped Newton method for (unconstrained) smooth equations and the recent interior point potential reduction methods for linear programs, linear and nonlinear complementarity problems. In general, constrained equations provide a unified formulation for many mathematical programming problems, including complementarity problems of various kinds and the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker systems of variational inequalities and nonlinear programs. Combining ideas from the damped Newton and interior point methods, we present an iterative algorithm for solving a constrained system of equations and investigate its convergence properties. Specialization of the algorithm and its convergence analysis to complementarity problems of various kinds and the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker systems of variational inequalities are discussed in detail. We also report the computational results of the implementation of the algorithm for solving several classes of convex programs. The generalized assignment problem can be viewed as the following problem of scheduling parallel machines with costs. Each job is to be processed by exactly one machine; processing jobj on machinei requires timep ij and incurs a cost ofc ij ; each machinei is available forT i time units, and the objective is to minimize the total cost incurred. Our main result is as follows. There is a polynomial-time algorithm that, given a valueC, either proves that no feasible schedule of costC exists, or else finds a schedule of cost at mostC where each machinei is used for at most 2T i time units.We also extend this result to a variant of the problem where, instead of a fixed processing timep ij , there is a range of possible processing times for each machine—job pair, and the cost linearly increases as the processing time decreases. We show that these results imply a polynomial-time 2-approximation algorithm to minimize a weighted sum of the cost and the makespan, i.e., the maximum job completion time. We also consider the objective of minimizing the mean job completion time. We show that there is a polynomial-time algorithm that, given valuesM andT, either proves that no schedule of mean job completion timeM and makespanT exists, or else finds a schedule of mean job completion time at mostM and makespan at most 2T. Based on two-grid discretizations, some local and parallel finite element algorithms for the Stokes problem are proposed and analyzed in this paper. These algorithms are motivated by the observation that for a solution to the Stokes problem, low frequency components can be approximated well by a relatively coarse grid and high frequency components can be computed on a fine grid by some local and parallel procedure. One technical tool for the analysis is some local a priori estimates that are also obtained in this paper for the finite element solutions on general shape-regular grids. Y. In this paper, we prove the first approximate max-flow min-cut theorem for undirected multicommodity flow. We show that for a feasible flow to exist in a multicommodity problem, it is sufficient that every cut's capacity exceeds its demand by a factor ofO(logClogD), whereC is the sum of all finite capacities andD is the sum of demands. Moreover, our theorem yields an algorithm for finding a cut that is approximately minimumrelative to the flow that must cross it. We use this result to obtain an approximation algorithm for T. C. Hu's generalization of the multiway-cut problem. This algorithm can in turn be applied to obtain approximation algorithms for minimum deletion of clauses of a 2-CNF formula, via minimization, and other problems. We describe a procedure for determining a few of the largest singular values of a large sparse matrix. The method by Golub and Kent which uses the method of modified moments for estimating the eigenvalues of operators used in iterative methods for the solution of linear systems of equations is appropriately modified in order to generate a sequence of bidiagonal matrices whose singular values approximate those of the original sparse matrix. A simple Lanczos recursion is proposed for determining the corresponding left and right singular vectors. The potential asynchronous computation of the bidiagonal matrices using modified moments with the iterations of an adapted Chebyshev semi-iterative (CSI) method is an attractive feature for parallel computers. Comparisons in efficiency and accuracy with an appropriate Lanczos algorithm (with selective re-orthogonalization) are presented on large sparse (rectangular) matrices arising from applications such as information retrieval and seismic reflection tomography. Over the past decade, the field of finite-dimensional variational inequality and complementarity problems has seen a rapid development in its theory of existence, uniqueness and sensitivity of solution(s), in the theory of algorithms, and in the application of these techniques to transportation planning, regional science, socio-economic analysis, energy modeling, and game theory. We describe an interior-point algorithm for monotone linear complementarity problems in which primal-dual affine scaling is used to generate the search directions. The algorithm is shown to have global and superlinear convergence with Q-order up to (but not including) two. The technique is shown to be consistent with a potential-reduction algorithm, yielding the first potential-reduction algorithm that is both globally and superlinearly convergent.Corresponding author. This paper introduces a globally convergent algorithm for solving a class of nonsmooth optimization problems, involving square roots of quadratic forms. The class includes in particular limit analysis problems in plasticity. The algorithm combines smoothing with successive approximation. The main computational effort in each iteration is solving a linear weighted least-squares problem. The convergence of the algorithm is proved and ana priori error estimate is obtained. A natural and basic problem in scheduling theory is to provide good average quality of service to a stream of jobs that arrive over time. In this paper we consider the problem of schedulingn jobs that are released over time in order to minimize the average completion time of the set of jobs. In contrast to the problem of minimizing average completion time when all jobs are available at time 0, all the problems that we consider are NP-hard, and essentially nothing was known about constructing good approximations in polynomial time. We give the first constant-factor approximation algorithms for several variants of the single and parallel machine models. Many of the algorithms are based on interesting algorithmic and structural relationships between preemptive and nonpreemptive schedules and linear programming relaxations of both. Many of the algorithms generalize to the minimization of averageweighted completion time as well. © 1998 The Mathematical Programming Society, Inc. We show how to use polynomial and strongly polynomial capacity scaling algorithms for the transshipment problem to design a polynomial dual network simplex pivot rule. Our best pivoting strategy leads to an O(m 2 logn) bound on the number of pivots, wheren andm denotes the number of nodes and arcs in the input network.
