Greene's Theorem states that the maximum cardinality of an optimal k-path in a poset is equal to the minimum k-norm of a k-optimal coloring. This result was extended to all acyclic digraphs, and is conjectured to hold for general digraphs. We prove the result for general digraphs in which an optimal k-path contains a path of cardinality one. This implies the validity of the conjecture for all bipartite digraphs. We also extend Greene's Theorem to all split graphs.  相似文献

Those connected graphsG are determined for which there exist nonisomorphic connected graphs of equal size containingG as a unique greatest common subgraph. It is known that a class of graphs defined by a single forbidden induced subgraph G is well-quasi-ordered by the induced subgraph relation if and only if G is an induced subgraph of P4. However, very little is known about well-quasi-ordered classes of graphs defined by more than one forbidden induced subgraph. We conjecture that for any natural number k, there are finitely many minimal classes of graphs defined by k forbidden induced subgraphs which are not well-quasi-ordered by the induced subgraph relation and prove the conjecture for k=2. We explicitly reveal many of the minimal classes defined by two forbidden induced subgraphs which are not well-quasi-ordered and many of those which are well-quasi-ordered by the induced subgraph relation.  相似文献

The construction of complete lists of regular graphs up to isomorphism is one of the oldest problems in constructive combinatorics. In this article an efficient algorithm to generate regular graphs with a given number of vertices and vertex degree is introduced. The method is based on orderly generation refined by criteria to avoid isomorphism checking and combined with a fast test for canonicity. The implementation allows computing even large classes of graphs, like construction of the 4‐regular graphs on 18 vertices and, for the first time, the 5‐regular graphs on 16 vertices. Also in cases with given girth, some remarkable results are obtained. For instance, the 5‐regular graphs with girth 5 and minimal number of vertices were generated in less than 1 h. We study the parameterized complexity of the problems of determining whether a graph contains a k-edge subgraph (k-vertex induced subgraph) that is a Π-graph for Π-graphs being one of the following four classes of graphs: Eulerian graphs, even graphs, odd graphs, and connected odd graphs. We also consider the parameterized complexity of their parametric dual problems.For these sixteen problems, we show that eight of them are fixed parameter tractable and four are W[1]-hard. Our main techniques are the color-coding method of Alon, Yuster and Zwick, and the random separation method of Cai, Chan and Chan.  相似文献

The degree/diameter problem is to determine the largest graphs or digraphs of given maximum degree and given diameter. This paper deals with directed graphs. General upper bounds, called Moore bounds, exist for the largest possible order of such digraphs of maximum degree d and given diameter k. It is known that simulated annealing and genetic algorithm are effective techniques to identify global optimal solutions.This paper describes our attempt to build a Hybrid Simulated Annealing and Genetic Algorithm (HSAGA) that can be used to construct large digraphs. We present our new results obtained by HSAGA, as well as several related open problems.  相似文献

The clique number of an undirected graph G is the maximum order of a complete subgraph of G and is a well‐known lower bound for the chromatic number of G. Every proper k‐coloring of G may be viewed as a homomorphism (an edge‐preserving vertex mapping) of G to the complete graph of order k. By considering homomorphisms of oriented graphs (digraphs without cycles of length at most 2), we get a natural notion of (oriented) colorings and oriented chromatic number of oriented graphs. An oriented clique is then an oriented graph whose number of vertices and oriented chromatic number coincide. However, the structure of oriented cliques is much less understood than in the undirected case. In this article, we study the structure of outerplanar and planar oriented cliques. We first provide a list of 11 graphs and prove that an outerplanar graph can be oriented as an oriented clique if and only if it contains one of these graphs as a spanning subgraph. Klostermeyer and MacGillivray conjectured that the order of a planar oriented clique is at most 15, which was later proved by Sen. We show that any planar oriented clique on 15 vertices must contain a particular oriented graph as a spanning subgraph, thus reproving the above conjecture. We also provide tight upper bounds for the order of planar oriented cliques of girth k for all .  相似文献

Suppose the edges of a graph G are assigned 3‐element lists of real weights. Is it possible to choose a weight for each edge from its list so that the sums of weights around adjacent vertices were different? We prove that the answer is positive for several classes of graphs, including complete graphs, complete bipartite graphs, and trees (except K2). The argument is algebraic and uses permanents of matrices and Combinatorial Nullstellensatz. We also consider a directed version of the problem. We prove by an elementary argument that for digraphs the answer to the above question is positive even with lists of size two. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The minimum weighted k-cardinality subgraph problem consists of finding a connected subgraph of a given graph with exactly k edges whose sum of weights is minimum. For this NP-hard combinatorial problem, only constructive types of heuristics have been suggested in the literature. In this paper we propose a new heuristic based on variable neighborhood search metaheuristic rules. This procedure uses a new local search developed by us. Extensive numerical results that include graphs with up to 5,000 vertices are reported. It appears that VNS outperforms all previous methods.  相似文献

In 1987, Alavi, Boals, Chartrand, Erdös, and Oellermann conjectured that all graphs have an ascending subgraph decomposition (ASD). Though different classes of graphs have been shown to have an ASD, the conjecture remains open. In this paper we investigate the similar problem for digraphs. In particular, we will show that any orientation of a compete balanced tripartite graph has an ASD.  相似文献

The b-chromatic number of a graph G is the largest integer k such that G has a coloring of the vertices in k color classes such that every color class contains a vertex that has a neighbour in all other color classes. We characterize the class of chordal graphs for which the b-chromatic number is equal to the chromatic number for every induced subgraph. Abstract

For a set F of graphs and a natural number k, an (F, k)-colouring of a graph G is a proper colouring of V (G) such that no subgraph of G isomorphic to an element of F is coloured with at most k colours. Equivalently, if P is the class of all graphs that do not contain an element of F as a subgraph, a χP,k colouring of G is a proper colouring such that the union of at most k colour classes induces a graph in P. The smallest number of colours in such a colouring of G, if it exists, is denoted by χP,k (G). We give some general results on χP,k-colourings and investigate values of χP,k (G) for some choices of P and classes of graphs G.  相似文献

The paper presents a graphical characterization of the largest chain graphs which serve as unique representatives of classes of Markov equivalent chain graphs. The characterization is a basis for an algorithm constructing, for a given chain graph, the largest chain graph equivalent to it. The algorithm was used to generate a catalog of the largest chain graphs with at most five vertices. Every item of the catalog contains the largest chain graph of a class of Markov equivalent chain graphs and an economical record of the induced independency model.  相似文献

Sperner product is the natural generalization of co-normal product to digraphs. For every class of digraphs closed under Sperner product, the cardinality of the largest subgraph from the given class, contained as an induced subgraph in the co-normal powers of a graphG, has an exponential growth. The corresponding asymptotic exponent is the capacity ofG with respect to said class of digraphs. We derive upper and lower bounds for these capacities for various classes of digraphs, and analyze the conditions under which they are tight.  相似文献

 A graph is weakly k-homogeneous if whenever two induced subgraphs on k vertices are isomorphic, then some automorphism of this graph sends one induced subgraph to the other. In this note, we characterize weakly k-homogeneous graphs with certain given number of isolated vertices and given number of nontrivial components. As byproduct, all disconnected weakly k-homogeneous graphs are determined for k=2 and k=3. Let s and t be vectors of positive integers with the same sum. We study the uniform distribution on the space of simple bipartite graphs with degree sequence s in one part and t in the other; equivalently, binary matrices with row sums s and column sums t . In particular, we find precise formulae for the probabilities that a given bipartite graph is edge‐disjoint from, a subgraph of, or an induced subgraph of a random graph in the class. We also give similar formulae for the uniform distribution on the set of simple directed graphs with out‐degrees s and in‐degrees t . In each case, the graphs or digraphs are required to be sufficiently dense, with the degrees varying within certain limits, and the subgraphs are required to be sufficiently sparse. Previous results were restricted to spaces of sparse graphs. Our theorems are based on an enumeration of bipartite graphs avoiding a given set of edges, proved by multidimensional complex integration. The quasi‐random theory for graphs mainly focuses on a large equivalent class of graph properties each of which can be used as a certificate for randomness. For k ‐graphs (i.e., k ‐uniform hypergraphs), an analogous quasi‐random class contains various equivalent graph properties including the kdiscrepancy property (bounding the number of edges in the generalized induced subgraph determined by any given (k ‐ 1) ‐graph on the same vertex set) as well as the kdeviation property (bounding the occurrences of “octahedron”, a generalization of 4 ‐cycle). In a 1990 paper (Chung, Random Struct Algorithms 1 (1990) 363‐382), a weaker notion of l ‐discrepancy properties for k ‐graphs was introduced for forming a nested chain of quasi‐random classes, but the proof for showing the equivalence of l ‐discrepancy and l ‐deviation, for 2 ≤ l < k, contains an error. An additional parameter is needed in the definition of discrepancy, because of the rich and complex structure in hypergraphs. In this note, we introduce the notion of (l,s) ‐discrepancy for k ‐graphs and prove that the equivalence of the (k,s) ‐discrepancy and the s ‐deviation for 1 ≤ sk. We remark that this refined notion of discrepancy seems to point to a lattice structure in relating various quasi‐random classes for hypergraphs. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Random Struct. This paper introduces a new parameter I = I(G) for a loopless digraph G, which can be thought of as a generalization of the girth of a graph. Let k, λ, δ, and D denote respectively the connectivity, arc-connectivity, minimum degree, and diameter of G. Then it is proved that λ = δ if D ? 2I and κ k = δ if D ? 2I - 1. Analogous results involving upper bounds for k and λ are given for the more general class of digraphs with loops. Sufficient conditions for a digraph to be super-λ and super-k are also given. As a corollary, maximally connected and superconnected iterated line digraphs and (undirected) graphs are characterized.  相似文献
