Two dimensional nanomaterials including graphene, hexagonal boron‐nitride, molybdenum disulfide, etc., provide immense potentials for separation applications. However, the tradeoff between selectivity and permeability in choosing 2D nanomaterial‐based membrane is inevitable, limiting the progress on separation efficiency for mass industrial applications. To target these issues, versatile strategies such as the rational design of predefined interlayer channels, membrane nanopores, and reasonable functionalization, as well as new mechanisms have been emerged. In this review, we introduce the recent progress on separation mechanisms of 2D nanomaterial‐based membranes with different structures (including the interlayer channels type and the membrane nanopores type) and their inner surface functionalization. Moreover, the interface designs are discussed, in terms of employing dynamic liquid–liquid/liquid–gas interfaces, to advance the selectivity and permeability of the membranes. We further discuss the variety of separation applications based on 2D nanomaterial‐based membranes. The authors hope this review will inspire the active interest of many scientists in the area of the development and application of membrane science.  相似文献

Prussian Blue analogue (PBA) nanoparticles can be self‐assembled at air/liquid interfaces to build novel materials with interesting magnetic features. Herein, we study the influence of the size of PBA Cs0.4Ni[Cr(CN)6]0.9 and K0.25Ni[Fe(CN)6]0.75 nanoparticles on the self‐assembly behavior by synchrotron X‐ray reflectivity. Both nanoparticles show similar Z‐potential values. The phospholipid dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine and the amino surfactant dimethyldioctadecylammonium have been used as Langmuir monolayers to anchor the PBA nanoparticles and study the interplay of forces directing the self‐assembly of the nanoparticles at the surfactant/liquid interface. Whereas Cs0.4Ni[Cr(CN)6]0.9 nanoparticles with a diameter of 8 nm form an incomplete layer at the surfactant/water interface, the larger K0.25Ni[Fe(CN)6]0.75 nanoparticles with a diameter of 20 nm generate complete layers that can be stacked to one another. The size of the PBA nanoparticles is the main parameter determining the final arrangement at the air/liquid interface, due to the different extent of interparticle interaction. This study aims at the rationale design of PBA nanoparticles for an effective interfacial self‐assembly, ultimately leading to functional materials.  相似文献

Summary: Organic‐inorganic hybrid materials consisting of nanosized silica particles with surface grafted PS or PS‐b‐PMMA were synthesized using ATRP. These hybrid materials were used in the fabrication of highly‐ordered isoporous membranes. Optical characterization revealed that the membranes consisted of hexagonally ordered pores of uniform size. The combination of an open pore structure and high surface area makes isoporous membranes into materials of high interest in fields as biotechnology and photonics.

We report the design of supported lipid membranes attached to the surface by tailored lipopolymer tethers. A series of well‐defined lipopolymers were synthesized by means of living cationic polymerization of 2‐methyl‐2‐oxazolines. The polymers were equipped with a silane coupling group on the proximal, and lipid anchors on the distal chain ends. The length of the intermediate hydrophilic polymer tether was varied (n=14, 18, 33) to change the distance between the membrane and the substrate. Supported membranes have been prepared in two‐steps. First, a suitable lipopolymer/lipid mixture was deposited by Langmuir–Blodgett transfer, and annealed to establish the covalent coupling to the surface. On the dry lipopolymer/lipid monolayer, the upper leaflet was deposited by vesicle fusion. Optimization of both preparation steps resulted in the formation of stable and defect‐free membranes. Impacts of the spacer length and the lipopolymer fraction upon the lateral diffusivity of the lipids were systematically compared by fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP). First experiments on the incorporation of a large transmembrane cell receptor (integrin αIIbβ3) into the polymer‐tethered membrane suggested that the length of the polymer tether plays a crucial role in distribution of the proteins on the surface.  相似文献

The architecture of the plasma membrane is not only determined by the lipid and protein composition, but is also influenced by its attachment to the underlying cytoskeleton. Herein, we show that microscopic phase separation of “raft‐like” lipid mixtures in pore‐spanning bilayers is strongly determined by the underlying highly ordered porous substrate. In detail, lipid membranes composed of DOPC/sphingomyelin/cholesterol/Gb3 were prepared on ordered pore arrays in silicon with pore diameters of 0.8, 1.2 and 2 μm, respectively, by spreading and fusion of giant unilamellar vesicles. The upper part of the silicon substrate was first coated with gold and then functionalized with a thiol‐bearing cholesterol derivative rendering the surface hydrophobic, which is prerequisite for membrane formation. Confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscopy was used to investigate the phase behavior of the obtained pore‐spanning membranes. Coexisting liquid‐ordered‐ (lo) and liquid‐disordered (ld) domains were visualized for DOPC/sphingomyelin/cholesterol/Gb3 (40:35:20:5) membranes. The size of the lo‐phase domains was strongly affected by the underlying pore size of the silicon substrate and could be controlled by temperature, and the cholesterol content in the membrane, which was modulated by the addition of methyl‐β‐cyclodextrin. Binding of Shiga toxin B‐pentamers to the Gb3‐doped membranes increased the lo‐phase considerably and even induced lo‐phase domains in non‐phase separated bilayers composed of DOPC/sphingomyelin/cholesterol/Gb3 (65:10:20:5).  相似文献

Two‐dimensional (2D) materials with atomic thicknesses have aroused great interest as promising building blocks for the preparation of ultrathin 2D membranes. These 2D membranes can exhibit unprecedentedly high separation permeance owing to their ultrasmall membrane thicknesses and superior selectivity because of their size‐selective nanopores and/or nanochannels. Until now, a large number of 2D membranes with good performance have been reported, highlighting the potential of these novel membranes for efficient liquid and gas separations. Summarized in this review are the latest advances in 2D membranes, with a special focus on industrially attractive separation processes, fabrication methods of laminar membranes, choices of membrane materials, designs of membrane structures, and unique membrane transport properties. Opportunities and challenges of 2D membranes for commercial applications are also briefly discussed.  相似文献

Ultra‐low fouling and functionalizable coatings represent emerging surface platforms for various analytical and biomedical applications such as those involving examination of cellular interactions in their native environments. Ultra‐low fouling surface platforms as advanced interfaces enabling modulation of behavior of living cells via tuning surface physicochemical properties are presented and studied. The state‐of‐art ultra‐low fouling surface‐grafted polymer brushes of zwitterionic poly(carboxybetaine acrylamide), nonionic poly(N‐(2‐hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide), and random copolymers of carboxybetaine methacrylamide (CBMAA) and HPMAA [p(CBMAA‐co‐HPMAA)] with tunable molar contents of CBMAA and HPMAA are employed. Using a model Huh7 cell line, a systematic study of surface wettability, swelling, and charge effects on the cell growth, shape, and cytoskeleton distribution is performed. This study reveals that ultra‐low fouling interfaces with a high content of zwitterionic moieties (>65 mol%) modulate cell behavior in a distinctly different way compared to coatings with a high content of nonionic HPMAA. These differences are attributed mostly to the surface hydration capabilities. The results demonstrate a high potential of carboxybetaine‐rich ultra‐low fouling surfaces with high hydration capabilities and minimum background signal interferences to create next‐generation bioresponsive interfaces for advanced studies of living objects.  相似文献

PVDF/(PEI‐C/PAA)n functional membranes were prepared by layer‐by‐layer (LbL) assembly, and their heavy metal ions adsorption capability was investigated. The changes in the chemical compositions of membrane surfaces were determined by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XPS results show that the surface of the PVDF membrane can be alternatively functionalized by PEI‐C and PAA. The membrane surface hydrophilicity was evaluated through water contact angle measurement. Contact angle results show that the surface hydrophilicity of the membrane surface depends on the outermost deposited layer. Morphological changes of membrane surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The water fluxes for these membranes were elevated after modification. The performances of the PVDF/(PEI‐C/PAA)n membranes on the adsorption of copper ions (Cu2+) from aqueous solutions were investigated by inductively coupled plasma (ICP). The results indicate that the PVDF/(PEI‐C/PAA)n functional membranes show high copper ions adsorption ability. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In the past two decades, many research is being carried out on coating of textile membranes with conductive polymers. In order to functionalize the textile membranes, coating of different intrinsically conductive polymers can be applied on these membranes through appropriate coating techniques like electrochemical polymerization, wet chemical oxidation and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Noticeably, CVD process is one of the most suitable and environment friendly technique. In this research, microporous polyester and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes were coated with conductive poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) by CVD process in the presence of ferric(III)chloride (FeCl3) used as an oxidant. Polymerization of PEDOT on the surface of membranes and pore size was examined by optical microscope and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Structural analysis investigated with ATR‐FTIR, which revealed the successful deposition of PEDOT on membranes without damaging their parent structures. The amount of PEDOT in PEDOT‐coated polyester and PTFE membranes was explored with the help of thermogravimeteric analysis. Electrical resistance values of PEDOT‐coated membranes were measured by two probe method. The effect of different electrolyte solutions such as, distilled H2O, Na2SO4, HCl, and H2SO4 on electrical properties of produced conductive membranes was investigated after dipping for certain period of time. It was found that membranes dipped in H2SO4 show very low electrical resistance values, i.e. 0.85 kΩ for polyester membrane and 1.17 kΩ for PTFE membrane. The obtained PEDOT‐coated electro‐active membranes may find their possible utility in fuel cells, enzymatic fuel cells, and antistatic air filter applications. A permselective membrane is a critical component that defines the linear detection limits, the sensitivity, and thus the ultimate efficacy of an enzymatic biosensor. Although membranes like epoxy‐polyurethane (epoxy‐PU) and Nafion are widely used and provide the desired glucose detection limits of 2 to 30 mM, both the within batch and batch‐to‐batch variability of sensors that use these materials is a concern. The hypothesis for this study was that a crosslinked hydrogel would have a sufficiently uniform porosity and hydrophilicity to address the variability in sensor sensitivity. The hydrogel was prepared by crosslinking di‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate, hydroxyethyl methacrylate and N‐vinyl pyrrolidone with 2.5 mol% ethylene glycol dimethacrylate using water soluble initiators – ammonium persulfate and sodium metabisulfite under a nitrogen atmosphere. The hydrogel was applied to the sensor by dip coating during polymerisation. Electrochemical measurements revealed that the response characteristics of sensors coated with this membrane are highly consistent. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) was used to spatially resolve glucose diffusion through the membrane by measuring the consequent H2O2 release and compared with an epoxy‐PU membrane. Hydrogen peroxide measurements using SECM revealed that the epoxy‐PU membranes had uneven lateral diffusion profiles compared to the uniform profile of the hydrogel membranes. The uneven diffusion profiles of epoxy‐PU membranes are attributed to a fabrication method that results in uneven membrane properties, while the uniform diffusion profiles of the hydrogel membranes are primarily dictated by their uniform pore size.  相似文献

SiO2/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite nanofiber‐coated polypropylene (PP) nonwoven membranes were prepared by electrospinning of SiO2/PVDF dispersions onto both sides of PP nonwovens. The goal of this study was to combine the good mechanical strength of PP nonwoven with the excellent electrochemical properties of SiO2/PVDF composite nanofibers to obtain a new high‐performance separator. It was found that the addition of SiO2 nanoparticles played an important role in improving the overall performance of these nanofiber‐coated nonwoven membranes. Among the membranes with various SiO2 contents, 15% SiO2/PVDF composite nanofiber‐coated PP nonwoven membranes provided the highest ionic conductivity of 2.6 × 10?3 S cm?1 after being immersed in a liquid electrolyte, 1 mol L?1 lithium hexafluorophosphate in ethylene carbonate, dimethyl carbonate and diethyl carbonate. Compared with pure PVDF nanofiber‐coated PP nonwoven membranes, SiO2/PVDF composite fiber‐coated PP nonwoven membranes had greater liquid electrolyte uptake, higher electrochemical oxidation limit, and lower interfacial resistance with lithium. SiO2/PVDF composite fiber‐coated PP nonwoven membrane separators were assembled into lithium/lithium iron phosphate cells and demonstrated high cell capacities and good cycling performance at room temperature. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A general method of modifying the entire cross section of porous poly(ether sulfone) membranes with a low‐temperature CO2‐plasma treatment is reported. Both surfaces of the membranes are highly hydrophilic, with a water drop on the surface disappearing in less than 1 s, even 6 months after plasma treatment. This high hydrophilicity of both membrane surfaces results from the incorporation of hydrophilic functionalities, as evidenced by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The incorporation of these hydrophilic functionalities takes place primarily during plasma treatment, with some incorporation of atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen immediately upon exposure to air. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the membrane surface is covered by a thin, white layer that is likely the result of etching and redeposition of sputtered surface fragments. An increase in the water bubble point and glass‐transition temperature is also observed for CO2‐plasma‐treated membranes. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Various amounts of diethylene glycol bis[4‐(4′‐ethoxybenzoyloxy)benzoate] (DEBEB) were added into a poly(cis‐butadiene) (PB) membrane to improve its gas permeation ability. This type of rubber/liquid crystal (LC) composite membranes showed two obvious characteristics that are different from the gas permeation behavior reported in previous literature: (1) The permeabilities to O2, N2, and CO2 were enhanced at room temperature, for example, the permeabilities for the PB/DEBEB (90/10) membrane were higher above six times than those of PB membrane under the same conditions. It is suggested that the interface microvoids probably existed on pontes between polar crystal domains and nonpolar PB matrix. (2) All relationships between the permeability coefficient (P) and temperature (T) were characterized by N‐shape, that is, there were the peaks and valleys on the PT curves. Furthermore, morphology studies demonstrated that when DEBEB content in the membranes was above 10 wt %, it was spherically dispersed and embedded in the PB matrix in a crystal domain state. Gas permeation characteristics of the composite membranes were appropriately interpreted as together influence results of DEBEB phase transition behavior and the membrane morphology. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In the present study, modification of nanoparticles (NPs) was investigated to mitigate aggregation of SiO2 nanoparticles and improve the polymeric membrane's performance. For this purpose, the surface of SiO2 nanoparticles was activated with amine groups, and polymethacrylic acid (PMAA) was grafted on the surface of NPs by atom transfer radical polymerization. Modified NPs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) tests. Polyethersulfone (PES) membranes were fabricated with both SiO2 and SiO2‐g‐PMAA NPs via nonsolvent‐induced phase separation method. The fabricated membranes were characterized regarding their permeability, hydrophilicity, and porosity properties, and their separation efficiency was tested using the synthetic oil‐in‐water emulsion. The surface and cross‐sectional morphologies of membranes were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The experimental trials showed that modified NPs dispersed more uniformly in the structure of membranes and hydroxyl groups on the surface of NPs acted more effectively. Modification of NPs enhance the membrane performance in terms of permeate flux, hydrophilicity, and porosity. NPs modification improved the permeate flux about 46%. Oil rejection for all tested membranes was more than 98%, and modification of NPs did not reduce the rejection of membranes. The optimum concentration was obtained as 1 wt.% and 1.5 wt.% for SiO2 and SiO2‐g‐PMAA, respectively. Aggregation effect dominated at concentrations beyond the optimum values that decreased the permeate flux, consequently.  相似文献

Reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology is widely employed to address the demands for freshwater. In this study, fabrication and performance evaluation of customized RO membranes comprised of Matrimid and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is carried out. While exploring adoption of slip coating procedure, the effects of various modification techniques including incorporation of TiO2 nanoparticles and polyethylene glycol (PEG) into the skin layer as well as cross‐linking were investigated. The individual and combined effects of parameters on membrane morphology, surface characteristics and performance were also examined. Despite the distinctive characteristics of involved materials, delamination‐free composite membranes were successfully formed with an intimate contact at the interface of two layers. The results also indicated that increasing concentration of Matrimid in dope solution led to increase in membrane thickness and consequently decline in water flux. In the best case, membrane prepared using 1 wt.% Matrimid in dope exhibited water flux of 0.98 LMH and NaCl rejection of 95.7%. Also, incorporation of 3 wt.% TiO2 nanoparticles offered membranes with improved water flux of 1.37 LMH and salt rejection of 95.8%. On the other hand, water flux and salt rejection in membranes containing 5 wt.% PEG were 1.18 LMH and 96.2%, respectively. The co‐presence of both nanoparticles and PEG provided more insights about the contributing factors in tuned membranes. Modification of skin layer by cross‐linking significantly improved salt rejection at the expense of water flux. The results are scientifically interpreted and compared to the values reported in literature.  相似文献

Cell membranes contain lateral systems that consist of various lipid compositions and actin cytoskeleton, providing two‐dimensional (2D) platforms for chemical reactions. However, such complex 2D environments have not yet been used as a synthetic platform for artificial 2D nanomaterials. Herein, we demonstrate the direct synthesis of 2D coordination polymers (CPs) at the liquid‐cell interface of the plasma membrane of living cells. The coordination‐driven self‐assembly of networking metal complex lipids produces cyanide‐bridged CP layers with metal ions, enabling “pseudo‐membrane jackets” that produce long‐lived micro‐domains with a size of 1–5 μm. The resultant artificial and visible phase separation systems remain stable even in the absence of actin skeletons in cells. Moreover, we show the cell application of the jackets by demonstrating the enhancement of cellular calcium response to ATP.  相似文献

Polyethersulfone (PES) membrane, one of the most important polymeric materials because of its good chemical resistance, thermal stability, mechanical, and film‐forming properties, has already been used in hemodialysis, tissue engineering, and artificial organs. In order to improve the blood compatibility of PES membrane, many amphiphilic block copolymers have been synthesized and used as additives for surface modification. The object of this study is to develop a hydrophilic PES membrane by blending a comblike amphiphilic block copolymer poly (vinyl pyrrolidone)‐block‐poly [acrylate‐graft‐poly (methyl methacrylate)]‐block‐poly‐(vinyl pyrrolidone) [PVP‐b‐P (AE‐g‐PMMA)‐b‐PVP] synthesized by RAFT polymerization. The cytocompatibility performance of PVP‐b‐P (AE‐g‐PMMA)‐b‐PVP modified PES membrane was evaluated, which showed better cytocompatibility compared with that of pristine PES membrane. Endothelial cells cultured on the modified membranes present improved growth in terms of scanning electron microscope observation, MTT assay, and confocal laser scanning microscope observation. These results indicate that the modified membrane has great potential application in blood‐contact fields such as hemodialysis and bio‐artificial liver supports. The behavior of self‐assembly processes of nanoscale particles on plasma membranes can reveal mechanisms of important biofunctions and/or intractable diseases. Self‐assembly of citrate‐coated gold nanoparticles (cAuNPs) on liposomes was investigated. The adsorbed cAuNPs were initially fixed on the liposome surfaces and did not self‐assemble below the phospholipid phase transition temperature (Tm). In contrast, anisotropic cAuNP self‐assembly was observed upon heating of the composite above the Tm, where the phospholipids became fluid. The number of self‐assembled NPs is conveniently controlled by the initial mixing ratio of cAuNPs and liposomes. Gold nanoparticle protecting agents strongly affected the self‐assembly process on the fluidic membrane.  相似文献

The development of fluorescent probes to image forces in cells is an important challenge in chemistry and biology. Planarizable push‐pull probes have been introduced recently for this purpose. To provide most valuable information on forces in complex systems, these mechanosensitive ‘flipper’ probes will have to be localized by molecular recognition of targets of interest. Here we report fluorescent flippers that selectively recognize gangliosides on the surface of lipid bilayer membranes by formation of dynamic covalent boronate esters. The original flipper probes were equipped with 2‐fluorophenyl boronic acids and benzoboroxoles using consecutive triazole and oxime ligation. Evaluation was done in large unilamellar vesicles composed of EYPC/SM/CL/GM 40:40‐x:20:x to obtain mixed membranes with separate liquid‐disordered (Ld) and ganglioside (GM) containing liquid‐ordered (Lo) domains. With increasing GM concentration, fluorescence intensities increased and excitation maximum shifted to the red. Deconvolution of the spectra confirmed that these changes originate from a migration of the flipper probes from Ld to Lo domains upon binding to the gangliosides and thus the planarization in the more ordered environment. Control mechanophores without boronic acids failed to show the same response, and fructose partially inhibited the ganglioside sensitivity. These results demonstrate that it is possible to selectively accumulate mechanosensitive flipper probes in Lo domains and, more generally, that probe localization in complex membranes is possible and matters.  相似文献

The interaction between the ruthenium polypyridyl complex [Ru(terpy)(dcbpy)(H2O)]2+ (terpy=2,2′;6′,2“‐terpyridine, dcbpy=6,6′‐dichloro‐2,2′‐bipyridine) and phospholipid membranes containing either thioether ligands or cholesterol were investigated using UV–visible spectroscopy, Langmuir–Blodgett monolayer surface pressure measurements, and isothermal titration calorimety (ITC). When embedded in a membrane, the thioether ligand coordinated to the dicationic metal complex only when the phospholipids of the membrane were negatively charged, that is, in the presence of attractive electrostatic interaction. In such a case coordination is much faster than in homogeneous conditions. A two‐step model for the coordination of the metal complex to the membrane‐embedded sulfur ligand is proposed, in which adsorption of the complex to the negative surface of the monolayers or bilayers occurs within minutes, whereas formation of the coordination bond between the surface‐bound metal complex and ligand takes hours. Finally, adsorption of the aqua complex to the membrane is driven by entropy. It does not involve insertion of the metal complex into the hydrophobic lipid layer, but rather simple electrostatic adsorption at the water–bilayer interface.  相似文献
