 Through the differential equation describing the behavior of the nonlinear polarization of a medium with respect to an incident field, the Maxwell field equations and the boundary conditions of the field inside a resonator, the relationship between the output and the incident fields is obtained, describing a bistability phenomena. The dynamics of the quantum-statistical properties of the radiation of an atom in a cavity interacting with an external coherent field is investigated. A high level of quantum fluctuations of the field in the cavity is shown to destroy optical bistability in the multiatom case. Photon-number fluctuations and the spectral dispersion of the canonically conjugate quadratures of the field inside and outside a cavity are calculated. It is found that in contrast to the multiatom case quadrature squeezing and squeezing of the radiation intensity of a single atom are negligible inside and outside the cavity. Zh. éksp. Teor. The reflection frequency response and bistability characteristic of a ferromagnetic resonator are studied experimentally and theoretically. The resonator is a 25-µm-thick rectangular yttrium-iron-garnet film with perpendicular magnetization. A technique to construct the bistability characteristic of the resonator from its measured response to a pulsed signal is suggested. It is demonstrated that the microwave bistability results from the intrinsic nonlinearity of ferromagnetic resonance. It is found that the bistability characteristic can adequately be described on the basis of a dispersive-bistability model.  相似文献

We study nanomechanical resonators with frequency fluctuations due to diffusion of absorbed particles. The diffusion depends on the vibration amplitude through inertial effect. We find that, if the diffusion coefficient D is sufficiently large, the resonator response to periodic driving displays bistability. The lifetime of the coexisting vibrational states exponentially increases with increasing D and displays a scaling dependence on the parameters close to bifurcation points.  相似文献

We present a design of a polarization converter between linear, circular, and elliptic accomplished with an on-chip high-Q dielectric microring resonator. Nonlinear polarization switching can be accomplished at modest input intensities because of the high-intensity compression in the ring. We predict an optical bistability effect making the polarization of the transmitted light dependent on its spectral or intensity history.  相似文献

In this study, experimental results are concerning “the optical bistability due to thermal lensing effect”, in colloidal solution of gold nanoparticles (Au Nps) which has been studied under CW laser illuminations. Two different CW laser beams (He–Ne and Nd-Yag) were used to interact with a vertical Fabry–Perot interferometer, containing colloid of the Au Nps. Hysteretic loops have been observed with regard to optical bistability and the results were fitted with theoretical curves. The radiated power to the resonator was elevated up to 50 mW for both the laser beams with the same spot size. Also, new method was defined to precise evaluation of the theoretical hysteretic loop which is describing the relation between nonlinear refractive index and the beam intensity inside the resonator. This dependency is due to thermal lensing effect and numerical simulations of this effect were also performed, in order to better understanding of it.  相似文献

We investigated the optical bistability in an Er3+-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) crystal inside a unidirectional ring cavity. We find that the intensity and the frequency detuning of the coherent field as well as the rate of incoherent field can affect the optical bistability dramatically, which can be used to manipulate efficiently the threshold intensity and the hysteresis loop. The effect of the cooperation parameter on the OB is also studied.  相似文献

We theoretically investigated a hybrid absorptive-dispersive optical bistability and multistability behaviour in a three-level V-type system using a microwave field driving a hyperfine transition between two upper excited states inside a unidirectional ring cavity. We find that the intensity and the frequency detuning of the coupling field as well as the intensity of the microwave field can affect the OM behaviour dramatically, which can be used to control the transition from OM to OB or vice versa without need to resort the effect of the quantum interference. The effects of the phase, the quantum interference and the atomic cooperation parameter on the OM are also studied. Our scheme may be used for building more efficient all-optical switches and logic-gate devices for optical computing and quantum information processing.  相似文献

We investigate the optical bistability behavior of a three-level closed-loop atomic system beyond the multi-photon resonance condition. Using the Floquet decomposition, we solve the time-dependent equations of motion, beyond the multi-photon resonance condition. By identifying the different scattering processes contributing to the medium response, it is shown that in general the optical bistability behavior of the system is not phase-dependent. The phase dependence is due to the scattering of the driving and coupling fields into the probe field at a frequency, which, in general, differs from the probe field frequency.  相似文献

Optical bistability is realized in GaInAsP/InP coupled-circular resonator microlasers, which are fabricated by planar technology. For a coupled-circular resonator microlaser with the radius of 20?μm and a 2?μm-wide bus waveguide, hysteresis loops are observed for the output power coupling into an optical fiber versus the cw injection current at room temperature. The laser output spectra of the upper and lower states of the hysteresis loop indicate that the bistability is related to mode competitions. The optical bistability can be explained as the mode competition between the symmetry and antisymmetry coupled modes relative to the bus waveguide.  相似文献

We perform a transient analysis, steady-state analysis, and linear stability analysis of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot resonator in order to examine the possibility of a fiber bistable device. We here develop two iterative methods for calculating the dynamics of the Fabry-Perot resonator containing a nonlinear medium with an instantaneous response time. The treatment of the counter-propagating field within the cavity is very important in estimating the nonlinear phase shift due to propagation. A trapezoid rule and midpoint rule are used here for the numerical integration. The iterative method using the trapezoid rule gives excellent agreement with the multiple-beam method developed by Bischofberger and Shen (Phys. Rev. A 19 (1979) 1169), which is more complicated than the proposed procedure. Unfortunately it is found that the midpoint approximation is numerically unstable. Assuming a conventional optical fiber, the switching power for optical bistability is less than 1 kW for a resonator length of 1-2 cm. On the basis of the iterative method, we perform a linear stability analysis to examine whether Ikeda instability affects bistable device application or not. The stability analysis shows that the instability threshold is two orders of magnitude larger than the switching power for optical bistability.  相似文献

An approximate theoretical analysis is given of the bistable behavior of a simple resonator based on total internal reflection. It is assumed that the medium within the resonator is simultaneously absorbing and nonlinear. It is found that the amplitude bistability characteristics can be comparable to analogous characteristics for more complicated total-internal-reflection structures whose operation is based on tunnel excitation of waveguide modes. It is shown that strong phase bistability is possible in nonabsorbing total-internal-reflection resonators, and the possibility of using total-internal-reflection resonators as light modulators is discussed. Equations governing the behaviour of a single mode high-Q ring cavity are obtained for a coherent driving field (detuned to both cavity and atoms) and inhomogeneously broadened atomic transitions using a Hamiltonian approach. We find the region of bistability and critical points in the homogeneous broadening case. Numerical results including inhomogeneous broadening show that bistability is obtained more readily by detuning both the atomic transition and the cavity mode relative to the driving field.  相似文献

We present a theoretical investigation of optical bistability in a nonlinear semiconductor ring resonator, by taking into account the two-photon absorption and the free-carrier absorption. By solving the intensity equation within the ring resonator, a parametric formulation is obtained for describing the bistability relation between the input and the output intensities. Numerical results show that the nonlinear absorption effects can affect the critical points and domain of the optical bistability.  相似文献

A theoretical study is presented of multiple bistability in a single-mode optical fibre double-ring resonator using an all-fibre scheme involving degenerate two-wave mixing. Two successive bistable hysteresis loops (one is a normal type and another an inverting type) are formed in the input-output transmission curve. We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, optical bistability on a highly integrated silicon device, using a 5-microm-radius ring resonator. The strong light-confinement nature of the resonator induces nonlinear optical response with low pump power. We show that the optical bistability allows all-optical functionalities, such as switching and memory with microsecond time response and a modulation depth of 10 dB, driven by pump power as low as 45 microW. Silicon optical bistability relies on a fast thermal nonlinear optical effect presenting a 500-kHz modulation bandwidth.  相似文献

The stability of folded Fabry-Perot resonators is investigated for the case where the resonator contains a medium with a dispersive third-order nonlinearity. Positive-branch instabilities of Ikeda type are found, with thresholds comparable to optical bistability thresholds. In the unstable region, the internal field is apparently chaotic, though oscillatory behaviour is found in a special case.  相似文献

Optical bistability (OB) and optical multi-stability (OM) of a four-level Λ-type atomic system with two fold lower levels inside a unidirectional ring cavity is investigated. The effect of quantum interference arising from spontaneous emission and incoherent pumping on OB and OM is discussed. It is found that the threshold of OB and OM can be controlled by quantum interference mechanisms. In addition intensity of coupling field and the rate of an incoherent pumping field on behavior of OB and OM are then discussed.  相似文献
